WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM
Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer’s rules for perspectival projection are all related to the vanishing point. And there are four rules that he mentioned in the article. Firstly, vanishing point is an imaginary point where all perpendicular or orthogonal lines of perspective projection will meet. It helps the objects on planner surface to create an illusion of three dimensional. The second one is that parallel lines of perspective share a common vanishing point and all lines are drawn from the view of ‘eye’. Thirdly, if the parallels are on the horizontal plane, then the vanishing point lies on the horizontal line. Finally, equal dimensions disappear when they gradually move further in space so that any portion the picture is calculable space.
Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)
The homogenous space is a space created by mathematical tools and construction. According to Panofsky, “the planar cross section of the visual pyramid can pass for an adequate reproduction of [the] optical image”. The homogenous space is an purely mathematical space which is unchanging and infinite. Instead of reality, it only represents logic function and ideal purpose. All the objects exists in homogenous space are in relation to each other.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 Perspective 1 represents the view when Marco Polo initially enters the city of Zenobia. This view is taken from southeastern side of the Quad. It provides a diagonal perspective which create a wide space. The reason why i choose this perspective is that it shows the significant characteristic of this city, the high pilings and ladders together form a quite good combination. And it also convey a relaxing atmosphere which suits well with the first scene.
Perspective 2 Perspective 2 represents the view of Marco Polo when he passing through the meeting hall. This view is taken from southern side of the Quad in the middle area. Because this is the center of the whole Quad, when looking from this perspective it convey the sense of formal and seriousness. Also the columns around create a sense of pressure and made Marco Polo speed up his pace to go though this area.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 Zenobia is a city that set on dry terrain and stands on high pilings. The houses are made of bamboo and zinc, with many platforms at a different height. Their platforms are linked by ladders and hanging sidewalks. When Marco Polo first came to this city, he was almost lost and he saw a group of children playing, singing and dancing over there inside the Quad. Because of the complicated terrain, platforms on different heights with ladder became popular places for children to climb and play. In this image, there are children, pets and an old lady looking after them. There are also bamboo columns and zinc roofs to show Zenobia’s characteristics. The background also shows the height of Zenobians living at. The whole image conveys a pleasant mood and cheerful atmosphere. Perspective 2 After asking the way from the children, Marco Polo kept going and happened to see the meeting. This image is a scene of the meeting. The citizen leaders and politicians are having a weekly meeting about how to change the appearance of their city and make it better. This question has been discussed for years but still not having any big break though or ideas that everyone agrees. Every meeting ending with keeping the same old look. This scene is inspired by the book, it says that as the city grow through years, no one remembers why their founder give Zenobia this form, so there is no way telling whether it was satisfied when we see it today, but the image of a happy life of Zenobian is always a city like this. I think it is because of the isolation and the dry terrain make them build their city this way. They have no idea what other cities plans look like, they are completely isolated. And the hotness from the ground made them living on high pilings. The height can also tell for the light, both images are bright and have enough sunlight.

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE ON NOTATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Philosopher Nelson Goodman distinguished these two practice through his discussion of notation. Autographic Practice like autographs, paintings and sculptures are art forms that “depend for their authenticity upon direct contact of the author” , the item cannot be exactly imitated. On the contrast, Allographic Preactice like music, poetry and theatre movements, is an art form that “work exists in many copies and can be produced without the direct intervention of the author” .
Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Architects need new representational techniques because only using drawings of buildings and structures is not enough anymore, it cannot relate to the reality condition. The building industry need more prodective techologies for construction. And the trendency of mordernist architecture require more efficient and new techniques to make mordern architecture.

FINAL DRAWINGS Thin CiTies 2: Zenobia Jiaxin sun, 927490
After climbing the high ladders, Marco Polo enters the city of Zenobia from the southeastern side and slowing moved ahead, because he was a little lost in this complicated structure of platforms. When he saw the children, he walked slightly quicker to ask for the road. After asking the children, he went upstairs and happened to see a Meeting in the middle of the Quad, he didn’t want to interrupt them so he speeded up his pace and walked through this area quickly.
