Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Diagram is a tool that describes the relationships and prescribes performances in space. It plays non representational role. A diagram or a graph always requires a determinant form of mediation to become a drawing to enter into real space on an organisational level. Their performance depends on how they are deployed. However, a symbol is a sign which expresses the qualities of its dynamic object through a formal representation. It looks like what they depict.

Precedent Analysis

Firstly, I traced the petal outlines based on pavilion plan provided in rhino. However, in this way, the size of each petal is different. There are many overlapping in the composite plan. I try to use circle to make the pattern to ensure its symmetry. According to the different line weights in plan, I can adjust the height of each petal and ensure them in the correct layer.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

According to Herzberger’s concept, buildings with multiple functions are more crucial rather than its extreme function. Architects tend to focus on the threshold in space. It is a key to transit and connect between area with divergent territorial claims with its own right. And it divided by people’s potential thinking, different materials, surrounding factors and so on. For instance, M pavilion is not only a simple place for people to have a rest, but also a good place to give people some visual impulses.

Week Two

Isometric

M pavilion isometric view in north east

The main concept of Amanda’s pavilion is that she attempts to recreate the experience of being in a forest. So she chooses very thin and transparent material to make petals and slender columns to support. In this way, petals will sway gently in the breeze, meanwhile, it responds to the weather. When I modelled this pavilion, I focus on the details of petals to make it looks light. Through its semi-transparent surface, the threshold is also defined. Under the canopy the light will be dappled and dreamy. The shadow will be projected onto ground. It is also a transition of exterior and interior space. Cause there are no walls around it, it is an open and public space. People can pass through it via different paths to feel this visual effect. With the different connection of each petal, people are freely to move around to find a best place to have a rest and chat. By dividing into the different threshold, it makes pavilion become multi-functional and interesting.

Circulation

This is an open space. So there are many different circulation paths around it. These lines with two opposite arrows indicate people’s main movement. The denser lines, the more people will be across. The two cubic areas represent bench and a small cafe area respectively. There are more curves acrossing. What’s more, two pathways enclose the pavilion, which gives rise to the major movements are towards them. Larger shading areas, more people will take. The shading area in center is the largest one, which indicates that people would like to pass through this pavilion and also insinuate that people 6 enjoy the shadows from the top.

Thresholds

The field is defined by solid columns that will give people some physically feelings when people see it. Cause it is column rather than a wall. So it is an open space. People are more likely to go inside of this pavilion. Then the second threshold will give people a sense of feeling of being in nature. Petals are made by transparent material. The light will come into the ground and also produces some dreamy shadows projected on ground. Meanwhile, it will moderate a part of sunlight. Thus the third threshold is ground. It is an interior structure in this pavilion. People can see shadows from the top and also find a place they like to have a rest or watch towards the sky.

Appendix Process

I also use the similar way to make the ground rather than just tracing them. I make a equilateral triangle firstly, then combining two of them into one parallelogram. And I also try to do some trials of my circulation to think different directions of people’s movement.

Appendix

Process

This is my final petal outline and render MPavilion. The thickness of petals and ground looks three-dimensional. And I also redo many details of my petals.

8

Appendix

Process

This is the final isometric view after making 2D. In order to make it looks more three-dimensional, I fill some black colour in its thickness.
