Material Exploration 2020 London
The research explores the possibility of utilizing green macro algae within the framework of design and architectural applications. Overgrowth of green macro algae, algal blooms, can be harmful to marine life and are directly disruptive towards its surrounding ecosystem. The over-growth green algae are unfit to be used for bioenergy or consumption. While as raw material, it has the potentials to be developed into valuable new sustainable materials. The material research illustrates how to extract various properties from green macro algae. It starts with the extraction of dyeing and coloring properties and starch from green macro algae. Then research delves into the structural properties of the green macro algae itself. We devised a system of compression and drying to create rigid block components consisting solely of green macro algae. We then explored whether the integration of other solid biodegradable materials into green macro algae would be possible and helpful in improving its overall structure and loadbearing abilities. The extensive material research will then ultimately inform our end design.

MEMBRANE MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION There are experiments towards the extraction of starch from red algae. The extraction, combining it with predetermined quantities of water and glycerin, was a membrane like material that possessed different levels of strength, elasticity, and transparency.
BIO-PLASTIC WITH VARIOUS TEXTURES Extraction of starch from red algae is produced to membrane materials working as bioplastic with certain strength and elasticity. When the starch is mixed with green algae fibers with different tecniqu, various textures are produced.
MATERIAL SAMPLES MADE FROM ALGAE The experimenting potential of using raw material in two species, Ulva Lactuca and Ulva intestinalis, creates different, more complex shapes with various textures. Both short and long fibers are experimented with, which affect the structural integrity of the shapes as well.
MATERIAL SAMPLES TRANSFORMED FROM ALGAE&CLAY Furthering experimentations are combining algae with clay. In addition to being an aggregate to strengthen the green algae, clay also has the same reusable properties as green algae. The whole experimentation is also to explore the different textures and aesthetics able to be achieved with both clay and algae.
MATERIAL EXPLORATION OF RAMMED EARTH&ALGAE Investigating the visual aesthetics of rammed earth involving algae shows the potential of applying the traditional technique on material exploration.
MATERIAL APPLICATION OF RAMMED EARTH&ALGAE Through layering the algae strategically amongst the clay and cutting structures in different directions, rammed earth techniques achieve different visual expressions.
DESIGN LANGUAGE EXPLORATION The topological optimisation method is applied to explore the design languages of freeform geometry with good structure performance. The method optimizes the overall shapes of geometries to withstand a certain amount of material weight.
APPLICATION OF EARTH&ALGAE Geometries are with reasonable structure performance based on thickness. Thinner portions of the geometry consist mainly of algae, while thicker portions consist of clay.

Village 2020 Ningbo
This research explores the structural, spatial, and expressive potential of green macro algae as a multi-material fabrication system. Research deals with the specific type of algae classified as green macro algae which can become a marine hazard through blooms, and should be exploited as a resource. Through rigorous material testing and research, we were able to create a lightweight, rigid component from compressing and curing green macro algae. Using this material to drive our design approach, we propose an eco-village to be located in an existing village township in Ningbo, China. The eco-village will serve as a link between the villages within the township, encouraging interaction between residents and visitors and activate the existing landscape through our component-based architecture system. Baiyucun township and its residents are surrounded by an abundance of this algae; the architecture questions the existing relationship with the material and proposes alternative uses, exploiting algae as a building material that can engage with structure, light, and inhabitation.

ECO-VILLAGE ENTRANCE The eco-village is built with the material produced and fabricated locally. Raw wasted algae and local clay as raw materials are cheap and biodegradable.
ECO-VILLAGE BIRD VIEW The bird view shows how different units are arranged and work together as a community. Original mud roads with gravels are laid for remaining the rustic senses.
INTERIOR PLATFORM Interior platform with open balconies works as a grey space catering to both material production activities and daily life scenarios.
ROOFTOP PLATFORM CONNECTING UNITS Units are sharing rooftop platforms for drying algae and processing raw materials as raw algae are with strong smell and easily rotten in relatively enclosed space.

This research is aiming at reusing a mass of wasted feathers in the poultry industry. In general, there are only a few good quality down feathers and strong fine contour feathers that are recycled, while most feathers are landfilled or incinerated. The whole research explores properties of feathers, including aesthetic features, lightness, thermal Insulation, and waterproofness. The initial exploration focuses on the aesthetic properties of feathers as raw materials, and results in an exquisite artifact using available cheap tools and simple handicraft techniques. Then further research combines feathers as reinforce fiber with curing materials. Feathers will make the new combined materials have various textures, special tactility, relatively lightness, and strength.

Componet Research 2019 London
This is a one-week fast-paced research project aiming at exploring components aggregation design methods. The research starts with exploring different components geometries with Maya and the ways of assembling them with the grasshopper. Then the team experiments with how the variations of components could be applied to the overall entity. The logic of how variations are distributed and aggregated is designed and tested based on the concept and visual effects. The gradient following the shape and structure is created by the transition of variations. The final results are a pavilion and a chair.
COMPONENTS EXPLORATION DIfferent geometries are explored as the basic unit, components. The main concept is it should be aggregated in different directions so that the aggregation is growing.
COMPONENT CLUSTERS Aggregating components to clusters is testing how components are connected and how the entity is growing.

THICKER COMPONENT VARIATIONS
GRADIATION OF COMPONENT VARIATIONS The arrangement of how variations are transiting is changeable so that the gradient effects will be changed responsively.
BENCH EXPLORATIONS The overall shape and the arrangement of transition will change the features of the bench. In the meantime, interference to components will change the overall shape.
Modern Baroque Lounge individual work 2019 maya
The inspiration is derived from Baroque armchairs and lounges. The Baroque design is with the curve of arms and legs, the fluid shape, as well as sliding trends of the legs. The concept it to use more modern shapes and materials to rebuild the traits of baroque furniture. So the final design will be more simple but the same elegant. It will be made with mental which is with the smooth texture as velvet, but harder and industrial.

Gill Chair individual work 2019 maya
Fish gill has many layers of tissues, this kind of layered effect using the repeating elements to create a wholistic shape with many details. So the design will focus on how to layer components to create a wholistic piece with dynamic shape. As there will be a spine connecting all layers, the material could address the solid spine and make the area on each side of the spine lighter, so the glass will be a good choice for material.

This projects is an exploration of a new type of residential space. It is focusing on exploring new possibilities of interior partitions to create a fluid, connected and comfortable home. The of the home specifically requires programmes of wine room, home office and well-equipped gym. During the intensive research, including observation and interviews, the spatial narrowness and closeness in this aprtment building are discovered as the key issues , which block interaction between family members and limit child’s freedom of playing around. To respond to these issues, a exterior garden is planned in the center of home, and all of the traditional solid orthogonal interior partitions are replaced by curved, transparent or translucent glass walls. Finally, there are three different types of wall with different curvatures and gradients. Combining with the effects of different materials, each type of walls fits the privacy requirements of different programmes. Finally, all of those create a open and transparent residential space, which also meets users’ privacy needs.
Orthometric Solid Wall the traditional orthometric solid interior partitions create blocked and closed interior spaces

This is a mixed-use public interior space in the centre of the London Borough of Islington. This project is aiming at gathering residents of Islington through programme setting and space strategies, responding to the issue of lack of cohesion and lack of green space in this borough. Through research and discussion, four main programmes are chosen, which will help to generate more communication and interaction scenarios, as well as green scenery in this space. Four programmes occupy different part of the space with a blurring boundaries and visual connections. The mental rods crossing each other create grid-like units, generating different components which replace normal interior elements, such as partitions, ceilings and furniture. Finally, all of those create a blurring and immersive space atmosphere, to make users feel being united together.

EMOTIONAL PAVILION indivudual work
Program Date Lacation Area
Exhibition 2016 Rome 1100 sqm
This is a pavilion exhibiting four typical sculptures of Bernini (1598-1680). The key point of this project is exploring how to operate basic interior elements to create specific atmosphere which could immerse visitors into the space to let them understand the exhibits better. Four selected sculptures are all with dramatic background stories and the characters of sculptures are with dramatic expressions. So there are four emotions extracted from the stories and characters’ expressions. What kind of form and colour match corresponding emotions is discussed, and so are visual tactile and even olfactory properties of materials through research, drawings and sketch models . Finally, with the use of forms, materials, colours and light&shadow, specific atmosphere is to render what sculptures are trying to express .

EMOTION
THE RAPE OF PROSERPINA 2.55M Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1622 In Greek mythology, Proserpina (also known as Persephone) was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter (goddess of agriculture) and was queen of the Underworld. One day while the young maiden was picking flowers, Hades, god of the underworld, kidnapped Persephone and carried her back to the underworld to be his wife. And the schulpture is to depict the “pregnant” moment in the story, Hades just grabed the Proserpina who is trying to get rid of the force in vain. The scene is trying to show the tension and emotion behind the story.Twisted figures strain in opposing directions, testifying to a Mannerist influence.
TERROR
APOLLO AND DAPHNE 2.43M Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1622-1625 The sculpture bases on the story that when Apollo fated by Cupid’s loveexciting arrow, seeing the daughter of the river god Peneus, he is filled with wonder at her beauty and consumed by desire. But Daphne has been fated by Cupid’s love-repelling arrow and denies the love of men. As the Apollo flees he relentlessly chases her—boasting, pleading, and promising everything. When her strength is finally spent she prays to her father Peneus for transforming to be a laurel tree. This status shows the moment that Apollo reached Daphne and terrified Daphne started the conversion from human to tree.
DESPAIR
DAVID 1.7M Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1623–24 The Israelites are at war with the Philistines whose champion, Goliath, has challenged the Israelite army to settle the conflict by single combat. The young shepherd David has just taken up the challenge. When the Goliath arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. The sculpture dicpicts the moment that David decided and is about to

slay Goliath with a stone from his sling.
ECSTASY OF SAINT TERESA 3.5M Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1647–52 Teresa wrote about a scene in her own autobiography. In it, she described an angel who pierced her heart multiple times with fire-tipped spear. when an angel appeared before her with a golden spear: “He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and... to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it. The soul is satisfied now with nothing less than God.” This act sent her into what she described as a spiritual rapture.

Four sketch models for four sectors, which indicate different interior componets, are reconstructed and supported by the model of frames. All of those are integrated to a holistic sketch model that is transformed to the architecture later on. Based on the sketch model, the architectural mass, interior circulation, as well as all interior floors and walls, could be figured out, which will be the instruction of design scheme.

PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS individual / team work 2016-2019
This is a collection of selected constructed projects which I participated in deeply or took charge of individually. All of them are small-scale interior renovation or decoration. Each project focuses on different part of interior design, including interior structure, interior spatial connection, materials and specific style recreation. Every project has their own space quality and effects. The industrial and rough style of David Ma’s Home has a contrast with the elegant and soft feeling of Gewoo Studio decoration. The High Loft reflects the ability of operating interior space while Changde Apartment focuses on surface decoration including pattern design and color scheme design. After all of those practices have raised my sensibility of details construction technology and materials is raised.
