Oct. 16, during the business meeting with Joe, Gladys, Marilynn and Steve at church, we talked about "workplace evangelism". The third list is "commit to personal integrity." At the first or second meeting with Frank at the Six Figure Mentors community, he asked me "what is integrity?". I replied him: "I am integrity." My answer might surprise him. It is true and I will always put this one at a high position. Integrity for me simply means I do the right things consistently. I say something, I would do it. If I do not like some behavior from any one, I would not do those things. In Chinese, it says “己所不欲,勿施于人”. It means “Do as you would be done by others”. I was this way several years ago. I only can go better with me growing older. I was raised in a big family with good Chinese tradition/merits. My grandparents, my parents, my uncle Huang, name me any one of them, you only can see integrity and you just want to be someone like that. At the end of my day, when I go sleep, I want myself to be able to sleep at ease. Integrity is free yet invaluable. Everyone can have integrity. I could share with you about my stories about integrity.

1. In January 2007, when I decided not to continue a new working contract with my former boss, I did not choose to contact some customers, mainly a French customer who usually gave good orders. Even when I worked for my former boss, I did not steal any customer. In those days, some workmates showed bad examples by doing the wrong thing. I remained who I am. People said if a good person is put in a bad surrounding, they could do the bad things. Good luck, if they want to try me. I was not that way. I stayed away from temptation. That is integrity for me. It was not that hard. Did I regret not getting more abundance with short cut? Sometimes, I did regret, I chose a hard way. Yes, I did want more money, but I want the money to come in the right path. I always believe there is enough abundance out there.

2. I remembered as a student, I was not good at study. I was tired of competition when I saw my classmates fought hard just to be the best in some contest. I believed there were so many professions for our future. Why to compete for No. 1, 2,3? In some way, I was wrong. I did not see that as a student, my job was to study well. In another way, now I see where I came from. I am not that type of person who fought for the best. I cared more if I was a good person. I was considerate since I was a little kid. I cared more about who I was in general. Does that make sense to you? Integrity is a main character when I consider someone or me as a good person.

I do not cheat at tests. Back in those days, do you know how stupid or weird I sound? It was so common in cheating at tests. I was stubborn. Either I could answer the questions or not, I just refused to cheat. I had one computer test with low score or “0”, that teacher put comments there, said I copied someone. That was quite insulting for me. I did not explain. Whatever… Ironically, many years later, I found that he lived in the same building of my office. I did not talk with that person. I did not forgive him. (Writing to this, I probably need to do the forgive exercise, to forgive that teacher.)So, being honest is integrity for me.

3. About this one, I am not sure if it is good to share. I mentioned this in one of my videos several months ago. I never cheated my ex in our marriage life. Did I have temptation? Yes. While I never crossed the line. I want a loyal husband. I would do the same for him. Even I suffered being lonely, I did not cheat him not even once, for 10 years. That is integrity for me.

Integrity is important for me in business. I am doing international trading. You can say I am a middle man, which does not sound quite appealing. A few years ago, we could receive claim. For example, for industrial valve, fitting, flange, tube, mistakes could happen. The customer may send us one email, asking for reimbursement. Can you be honest in translating the exact same content into Chinese and tell the factory what happened? Can you do that every time? Besides some customers’ information, I would not share, yes, I can be honest every time. This comes to another principle, how you treat people says more. I would ask myself, if I were a factory, can I trust Sable Trade? I am always kind to my factories, just the way I want myself to be treated, someone that I can trust in business. Integrity is not as hard as you think. Like many good habits or characters, it matters when you show your integrity consistently and persistently.

How important is integrity for you? What is your defintion about integrity? What is your story about integrity? Do you commit to integrity? I hope you do! If you would like to share with me about your story, please comment below. Have a nice evening! Jie Zheng
