What is Viral Marketing? Viral marketing is a buzzword for promotional messages that spread through social networks. Viral marketing campaigns hinge on finding a catchy medium for a message and then propagating it through different online channels including blogs, microblogs, posts, crowd-soucing and so on. The actual message may be in the form of an advertorial, but is more likely to come in the form of a branded game, video clip, image or other format that can be branded. Generally speaking, the goal of a viral marketing campaign is to raise brand awareness, or mind-share, rather than convert clicks into sales of a specific product.
Elements of a Viral Marketing Strategy An effective viral marketing strategy: 1. Gives away products or services; 2. Provides for effortless transfer to others; 3. Scales easily from small to very large; 4. Exploits common motivations and behaviors; 5. Utilizes existing communication networks; 6. Takes advantage of others’ resources.

Advantages and disadvantages There are various advantages and disadvantages for viral marketing. The advantages include lower advertising costs, fast growth, mainstream media exposure and rapid lead generation. The disadvantages to consider with viral marketing include the nuisance factor. Due to the large amount of email people receive daily, viral marketing messages may be viewed as spam. Another consideration is negative marketing buzz.
