I mentioned in my earlier post that I do not understand why people do not respect my time. Continued with this issue, which sometimes bothers me, I asked my another mentor H. She sent me lots of information about assertiveness. With more reading of them, I am glad that I am doing much better compared to my early days.
I had to reflect on my life and my family. I was raised in a family that always says yes to people. My parent sacrificed their happiness to say yes to certain relatives for almost all of their life. Years after years, those yes took away their joy and happiness, special my mother. The relatives were not grateful. They kept asking material things. On one side, they were never satisfied about what we gave them and they kept asking for more, even after my father had a stroke, lying in the hospital. How dare they did that? On the other side, my mother was not happy. She tried to keep the peace at the family but it did not work out that way. She sometimes would argue with my father, why you gave so much for your family and what about us?
We are supposed to feel joy when we give, right? But this has to be based on boundary and taking care of ourselves first. Do not even sacrifice your peace, joy and happiness to please someone else. It does not worth. Respect yourself first, love yourself first.
Learn to be assertive and tell people to respect you. Tell them about your feelings in a nice way and learn to say “No. This is one of the biggest lessons I learned. Being assertive does not mean rude, disrespectful or aggressive. We deserve respect.
