KENILWORTH KENILWORTH SCHOOL THEN AND NOW
My memories of education at both Kenilworth Lower and Kenilworth State Schools of more than half a century ago are happy ones – will the children of today be able to say the same when their eyes are dim and their hair grey? Lenore Meldrum President of Kenilworth and District Historical Association
BUNYA WINS BATTLE
T
HEN. School number 896 - Kenilworth Provisional School opened on 3/11/1899 accepting pupils 22 January, 1900 (it became Kenilworth Lower State School in 1939). This school was a one-room structure situated on the hill where Woods Sand and Gravel currently reside. State Archives Records list the opening of Kidaman Creek School (No 1451) as Circa 1/1/1914 but a Chronicle article published 24/4/1914 states as the temporary building is ready for occupation, action will be taken to send the necessary requisites and to appoint a teacher to the school as soon as possible (page 5). Cambroon School (No 1794) opened on February 5, 1923 and continued to provide education for the children of the Yabba Creek area for the next 20 years, ceasing to admit pupils on 31/8/1943. Page 2 of the Nambour Chronicle 8/8/1924 reported the establishment of a Provisional School at Kenilworth Township (No 1309) in the local hall had been approved provided that the use of the hall is granted free of cost to the Department and that separate closet accommodation is provided for each sex, also without expense to the Department. A teacher would be appointed only when furniture was delivered by Works Department and the conveniences provided. Coolabine School (No 1587) opened for business on 1/1/1928. All these schools opened with one teacher, sometimes working with up to 80 children across all grades. Children near the schools walked, others further distant rode horses, with a well fenced horse paddock and saddle shed provided. Coolabine School was the first of the district schools to be closed and the pupils “bussed” in to the Kenilworth State School. Kidaman Creek pupils also joined the “bussing community” after closing the school doors on 31/12/1958. Kenilworth Lower followed twelve months later.
T
he battle cries were loud and fierce and house colours were flying proudly when the Kenilworth State Community College held their annual athletics carnival recently. The competition was strong but Bunya came out overall winners followed by BlueGum and Cedar.
The atmosphere of the day was enhanced by every student’s willingness to ‘have a go’ and by the good sportsmanship that was displayed by all the competitors. It was heartening to hear all of the encouragement that the children gave to each other without the need of any adult prompting. The annual parent- teacher- student relay was once again hotly contested with two teams of parents competing! It was won by the teacher team, with a bit of help by a past student or two! A lot of work goes into the running of athletics days and we would like to thank everyone for their support and hard work - the staff, the tuckshop ladies, the parents and families and especially the children for making it such a wonderful day. The photo shows the Age Champions with their medallions which were presented at the conclusion of the carnival. Congratulations!

Kenilworth State Community College still provides primary school education. The saddle shed is still in the grounds, but no one rides horses to school so there is no horse paddock, children still walk, many are driven in motor vehicles and the school bus runs established half a century ago still operate.

KENILWORTH 90 YEAR ANNIVERSARY SHOW BRINGS OLD KENILWORTH FRIENDS TOGETHER AND OFFERS PLENTY FOR THE FAMILY
wonderful small supporting township, and you have all you need for a great family weekend. So bring the kids, bring the grandparents, and have a great time with one of the friendliest towns in our Sunshine Coast region.
he Kenilworth Show and Rodeo has a fine tradition of providing great entertainment for the whole family and this year will be no exception. It will be run on the first Saturday of Queensland’s school holidays (19 September) and precedes a week of celebrations, so bring the family for a mixture of action, education, competitions, and local arts and crafts.
All the proceeds go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the hall, show and recreation grounds which are totally owned by, and operated with the generosity of, the community of Kenilworth.
T
Our theme this year is “Then & Now” featuring a photographic competition comparing the Kenilworth district from at least 50 years ago with that of today. There’ll be plenty of old photos with their new counterparts. Starting at 10am and running until around 4pm, there are ten woodchop events in all. Following the mid afternoon veteran event featuring Vic Summers, we have a special 16 inch Standing Block Relay for two axemen. This endurance event at days end always attracts the crowds. In the ever popular Show Jumping ring events starting at 8am, we have many current and future stars competing in a full day’s program of five events. The Kenilworth Show is an unique opportunity for up and coming stars to mix with World Cup calibre riders and get hints and tips from real professionals. In the pavilion, we have special themes in the cookery, photography, and textile handicraft sections. Also see flora, horticulture and junior displays. Over in the main ring, we have the show horses kicking off at 8.30am. Kenilworth’s Pony Club is strong and fields many competitors in a wide range of events. Stock Horse, Thoroughbreds, Hacks, Arabian, Quarter Horse, Galloways, Warmbloods, Colorama, miniatures and ponies, with plenty of junior and novelty events. The purpose built rodeo ring will feature the NRA maximum points All Round Championship Rodeo with extra prize money this year for the open and junior bull ride events. Bronc rides, steer wrestling, and roping events round out a full days rodeo action that starts at 9.30am. Sideshow alley, face painting, puppet shows, Old McDonalds Farm, magicians, and show bags should give the young ones plenty to keep them occupied in a safe small country town environment. Stick around for the great display put on by KC’s Fireworks that start at 7pm. For those that need to stay over, camping is free on the grounds after the show has finished. Add nearby attractions like our famous Cheese Factory, spectacular Charley Morland camping grounds, and a

KENILWORTH PONY CLUB
A
s mentioned in the last edition, Kenilworth Pony Club had the opportunity to learn more about cross country competitions from elite rider and trainer, Simone Kann. Instructors, Tonia Murtagh, Sonia Law, Sharon Falconer, Karen Conroy along with our newly recruited trainee instructors Bret Lashmar and Ruth Law found the day to be most informative and provided our instructors with good teaching tips and ideas. Karen, Sharon and Bret were also put theory into practice by riding themselves whilst others were able to observe Simone instructing Matilda Law, Ella Skoupy, Bronte Law, Jessie Falconer and Rachael Law in the intricacies of cross country. I heard Rachael saying it “was the best fun” which was agreed upon by everyone in attendance. Following on from this day our instructors also attended a one day clinic from funds provided through the Department of Communities’ Club Development Program. Simone provided all with theory and practical hints in the disciplines featured in one day eventing, ie dressage, show jumping and cross country. Once again, another big day for our instructors, who are generously volunteering their time, for the benefit of all club members, please don’t forget to thank them. Our riders have also been out and about a number of events: • Pomona Gymkhana – 2nd March Past – Congratulations Samantha, Rachael, Romy, Kate, Megan and Zoe. Numerous ribbons and smiles throughout the day. Rachael placed 2nd overall in the 15 years age group. • Mooloolah Hack Day – Jessie Falconer was the club’s only representative at this event. Something a little bit different to jumping Jess? • Buderim Formal Gymkhana – Congratulations to Romy, Kate and Megan. Once again smiles and ribbons throughout the day. Our riders will also be preparing for the Kenilworth Show and Rodeo to be held on 19 September. Riders will be competing in the many led, breed, hack, jumping and novelty classes available on the day. Go KPC!!

KENILWORTH POETS’ BREAKFAST IS ON AGAIN
T
he Poets’ Breakfast is on Saturday 26 September and runs from 8am to 10.30am alongside the Kenilworth Hall and entry is just $5. Breakfast is available, with catering this year by Kenilworth College P&C and refreshments by Save the Mary. As part of this year’s Kenilworth Celebrates! Festival, the Conondale Range committee has taken on some assistance from “Save the Mary” to present another of their extremely popular Poets’ Breakfasts. From humble beginnings alongside the scout hut more than a decade ago, the breakfasts have been growing steadily each year. The audience love them, the poets love them, so how could they not continue? With the proven mix of some really champion poets along with the delightfully unknown element of an open microphone for poets from the audience, the end result is two and a half hours of rhyming mayhem. The most frequently heard comment from an appreciative audience it’s that they didn’t think poetry could be that much fun. Host for the breakfast is popular local poet Ian Mackay and special visitors this year include the most welcome return of Shirley Friend, a firm, if rather irreverent, favourite with poetry audiences across the nation. After the breakfast, patrons are invited to visit the wonderful Art Competition in the adjoining hall and to be part of other festivities around the town. M
ental illness is something we don’t like to talk about. However it is so common that one in five Australians will suffer from some form of mental illness. Depression is known as the “common cold” of mental illness and three million people in Australia will experience an episode of major depression that will immobilise every aspect of their lives, from employment to relationships and everyday functioning. Many people experience the shock and confusion of ending up in a psychiatric ward of the hospital and the road back to their normal existence is anything but clear. In August a new service aiming to help these people achieve their goals and live a fulfilling life has begun, based in Cooroy, but covering the whole of the Coast including Gympie and west to Murgon. The emphasis is on recovery from serious mental illness and the program provides one on one support to assist people re-establish their lives in the community, rebuild relationships and create self worth. The program is unique in that personal helpers and mentors will walk beside clients and assist them to design and implement their own recovery by encouraging them to share their interests and dreams. Peer workers have their own experience of mental illness and recovery to share and demonstrate a positive path. Team Leader Kaye Frangos has facilitated a similar program on the Gold Coast with Federal Government funding from FaHCSIA. “This program focuses on people’s strengths and gives the person hope that they can recover

PROBUS SHOW AND TELL
T
he Probus Club of Cooroy held a vintage ‘Show and Tell’ luncheon at the Anglican Church hall. Some very interesting and old items were on display and fascinating stories shared. English newspapers telling of the abdication of King George, a pre-1970’s brass fireman’s helmet, old school books and a 1940’s ceramic birth plaque recording the birth of baby Rudy Agerbeek. Great interest was shown in a Practical Birth Control booklet and a beautifully hand written manual of handy household hints - both from the 1920’s. Did you know that a spoonful of common vinegar is good for stopping hiccup’s ? Anyone interested in joining the Cooroy Probus can find us at the Cooroy RSL on the first Monday of each month. POMONA COMMUNITY KITCHEN FOR POMONA
P
omona Meals on Wheels and Pomona and District Community House have partnered up to establish an exciting new project – a local Community Kitchen. Based on the model developed in Frankston, Victoria, a Community Kitchen offers an alternative approach to promote nutritious and delicious eating.
On Thursday 10 September from 11.30am to 1.30pm a Seniors Lunch will be on at Pomona Bowls Club, School Street for only $10.00 (BYO drinks). Entertainment will be provided by Col Noble, a local musician vocalist. For bookings please phone 5485 2427 by 12noon Monday 7 September. Local transport (cost $2.00) and special diet catered for on request.
THANK YOU FROM POMONA MOW
In a Community Kitchen a group of six to eight people come together on a weekly basis to plan fresh, affordable meals and to cook and socialise. The Kitchens have been proven to offer many benefits to participants including awareness of new cooking techniques and new recipes; budgeting and shopping skills; friendship, confidence and self-esteem and the motivation to plan meals and cook at home. Facilitator, local dietitian and nutritionist, Kate Moroney, is passionate about food and is thrilled to be able to use the Pomona Meals on Wheels kitchen as a base for this pilot program. She says, “This will be a wonderful contribution to the community. I am looking forward to working with Meals on Wheels.” David Teitjen, president of Pomona Meals on Wheels, is delighted to be part of this program which he is sure will maintain and further promote the wonderful community spirit that is still very much alive in Pomona. The objective of Meals on Wheels is to provide low cost and highly nutritious meals to not only aged people but to anyone in need, enabling them to remain in the comfort of their own homes for as long as they wish or are able. The Community Kitchen has similar objectives and has our full support. The pilot program will run for six weeks starting on Thursday 17 September and will meet from 11.00am to 1.00pm (approx). There is an initial cost of $15.00 per participant which includes an information and recipe folder. Participants pay weekly for the food they cook. A following program is set to go ahead in November. For further information and to register your interest please phone the Pomona Community House on 5485 2427. T
he Pomona Antiques and Collectables Fair, our major fundraiser for the year on the King of the Mountain weekend, was a huge success this year. The two-day event was strongly supported by our community, generating a record profit for our small service which will be used to purchase more equipment for the kitchen and ‘engine room’ out the back. Many people contributed a lot of time and effort, but Clive and Jane deserve special mention for coming up with the idea originally and for their tireless energy leading up to and during the Fair. There are too many people to mention, but a huge thank you goes out to all those who helped in the kitchen and with the serving of food and those attending the door and the stall; thanks Thelma for making all the marmalades and other home-made items. Thanks also to Gerry for your great cross-promotion.

Artist Bev Watkin won the People’s Choice Award at the recent Hinterland Art Group “Achieving Heights” exhibition. Her bold and beautiful painting “Poppy Parade” (see picture next page) was chosen as the favorite work of visitors to the friendly Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Her prizes were donated by the Pomona Fruit and Veg, Pomona Newsagency, Gitsham Prime Foods and Pomona Pharmacy. Pomona has a welcoming attitude which visitors to the gallery often comment on. The Railway Station Gallery is now full of the refreshing beach scenes painted by Lizzi Connor. This exhibition goes until the 3 September. MARY VALLEY
R
ide on Mary Imbil Kayak and Bike Hire offers a friendly, relaxing and environmental way to explore the Mary Valley and is the new business owned and operated by Bollier resident, Ian Harling.
Kayak down the Mary River or Yabba Creek, hearing only the splash of your paddle or maybe a startled water dragon. Look out for the timid platypus or the endangered lung fish as the meandering river takes you through a relaxing trip into the natural world. Or use pedal power to explore the many tracks of the Imbil Forest. “I have lived in and travelled across many countries and towns around the world including Australia, but it is the Mary Valley that has always won my heart over as the best place to settle down and finally put down roots. That is why I want to share the natural beauty and hidden treasures of the forests and waterways with small groups of people who live in or visit this area.” says Ian. Ian can offer five single kayaks, a double kayak, mountain bikes, pickup and drops on the Mary River, Yabba Creek or Borumba Dam and state forest (for bikes) even if you have your own equipment. Route maps for all fitness levels, safety equipment and dry bags (for kayaks) are also provided. Contact Ride on Mary Imbil Kayak and Bike Hire to arrange your Spring adventure… all details on ad page19.

VALLEY HOMES LAUNCH
e are very excited that the day has arrived at last - we are no longer trading as Hotondo Hinterland but under the new name of Valley Homes. We now have our very own plans and do not belong to a franchise group anymore, we are on our own. We have great faith that the area shows good indications of growth and will provide the valley with a revitalized community. On Sunday the 23 August, we held the launch of Valley Homes at our office in the main street of Imbil. With the help of our children and grandchildren we put on a sausage sizzle and drinks for friends, past and future clients, our sub-contractor and suppliers. We have had many positive comments, letters and congratulations sent our way regarding the change of our business. Clients we have already built for had a lot of positive feedbacks regarding their building experience with us for the people who are currently building with us or who will be in the future. This fills us pride that they hold our work and our commitment towards their building their homes in such high esteem. How many builders can say they can gladly mix past and future clients together and hope for a positive outcome? We have put many, many hours into the change, now we can dedicate a 100% of our time into building houses and growing our business. We would like to thank all who have wished us well and we will continue to do our very best to enhance growth and prosperity to the valley. Dale and Emma, Caitlin, Annalyse and Jazmine, Brad, Melissa, Troy and Emma Carlson, thanks for all your help. Glenn and Jenny Carlson See colour photos on top page 12

he Festival of the Walks will offer over 70 (most are free) mini events*.
There is a DVD showing helicopter coverage of the Glasshouse Mountains, Blackall Range and Mary Valley and another “stills” DVD of “wow” images of the area taken by a professional. Our FOTW photographic comp has been a stunning success with over 245 entries!
The Festival of the Walks, 29 August to 13 September, will offer over 70 (most are free) mini events*. So much to see and enjoy from special bus tours, Montville Music Walk’s huge program, gong/sound healing, glass art and furniture making demos, fauna and flora artists on show, art and photography exhibitions, rainforest ice cream creations, beadmaker demos, belly dance, walk and forest yoga classes to a sweet special edition FOTW candy to buy.
There is huge energy and support for FOTW as we focus on our free, natural assets while many businesses will present events that will run over a few weeks, not just one weekend and ensure flow-on success and fun for all.” *View these beautiful shots and full event details at http://www. festivalofthewalks.com.au/

The Gambling Community Benefit Fund has given us $30,000 to bring the courts back up to playing standard. We wish to acknowledge the generosity of this fund which has made this project change from a wish to a reality. The work has been finished in August and it includes six new galvanised posts for night lights and the resurfacing and painting of the two existing courts. The Gambling Community Benefit Fund has helped this community to keep a wonderful sporting facility alive. Gheerulla Tennis Club currently has two teams in the Sunshine Coast competition. There is coaching available for children and adults. Social night tennis on Tuesday is lots of fun. Our successful grant application would not have been possible without the local support of the Hall Committee of Gheerulla. Thank you. Come and check out the new courts. with 12 months rego

Bob Morrow, president BRBTA has devoted his time exclusively to the cause over the last six months and sums up their current festival progress: “We have been working for 15 months now and have listed on web sites in NZ, England and on many more across Australia. ENILWORTH FIRST RESPONSE I attended the Kenilworth First Response AGM on recently and felt privileged to be able to present community service awards to three long-serving members of this dedicated team. I presented community service awards to David White, Linda Green and Glenys Pearson, who have all been members of the Kenilworth First Response group since inauguration almost ten years ago.
This group has provided continual service to the Kenilworth district for almost ten years, with the Kenilworth First Response unit being the first service in Queensland to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Queensland

Ambulance Service (where the QAS acknowledges their role). In the past twelve months the response team has attended 102 call-outs, both saving people’s lives and making people more comfortable until ambulance officers arrive. This group provides an essential service in the Mary Valley and surrounding areas and members act as vital back-up support for the Maleny and Cooroy Ambulance services. If anyone has any spare time and would like to join this group, please ring president Wayne Lashmar on 5446 0723. STATE FOREST SALE CLARIFICATION There has been a lot of confusion about recent reports that the State Government is selling off state forest land. The Premier has advised the sale only applies to State Plantation Forests - not the land these forests are growing on (logging rights). The Imbil State Forest is classed as a State Plantation Forest, and is currently under investigation for inclusion in the possible future asset sale. The adjoining Kenilworth Forest in not up for sale, nor is the West Cooroy Forest. While discussing the West Cooroy Forest, the Treasurer’s Office has advised there may still be logging activities undertaken in the forest in the future as a result of a logging agreement reached some years ago by the former Beattie Government with loggers and environmentalists. The Mapleton Forest is not up for sale, and I have been advised it is due to be declared a National Park early next year. POWERLINE UPDATE I am looking forward to leading a delegation of PAGE members to meet with the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Stephen Robertson to ensure the Minister is aware of their concerns about the Wooloolga to West Cooroy powerline proposal. I was pleased that the Minister immediately took up the opportunity to meet with residents affected by this proposed powerline. I recently attended a PAGE management meeting where members expressed an interest in bringing the new Minister up to date on their concerns. On the photo Peter Wellington MP presents community service awards to David White (left) and Glenys Pearson.

POMONA MEALS ON WHEELS NEED YOU!
H
ere I am banging on once again about needing help at Pomona, but the nature of the game is that people move on in life, so bear with me. Foremost would be someone with office and computer experience to help in the back ‘engine room’ with communications and the printing of food labels, work and run sheets. David does a more-than-admirable job with this stuff (all on love time), but would like a break now and again; he’s a likeable, patient fellow ready to impart his knowledge to another willing worker. Our Meals on Wheels service operates just three days each week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; so someone with the skills and some spare time up their sleeve wouldn’t be overburdened by the requirements of this job. As well as the ‘warm and fuzzy feeling’ engendered when doing voluntary work you get to meet some lovely people and get fed good tucker, but I’m biased. We also having an ongoing need for volunteers to deliver meals to our customers, especially in the Cooroy and Eumundi areas. Even helping out just once a month would be great, with the added bonus of being able to meet some very nice people and travelling on roads not seen previously. There’s some spectacular scenery up here in the hinterland. We also need deliverers on our other runs: Pomona, Black Mountain and Cooran/Traveston.
16 | September 2, 2009
Any help would be warmly welcomed. Give us a call on 5485 1777, 5485 2209 or 5485 0527; or drop into our kitchen on one of our cooking days - we’re located at the back of the Memorial Hall in Pomona, about 50 meters from the CBD. Thank you. David

ALL-NEW JAZZ IS EVERY BIT A PLEASURE
addow’s Honda Cooroy the local Honda Dealer since 1972, seller of many Hondas in the hinterland, present the new Honda Jazz.
Whoever said the small things in life make the biggest difference might well have been talking about the Honda Jazz. The Jazz GLI, GLI-SP, VTI and VTI-S are smoother and sexier. She’s is a whole lot sportier too, with enhanced aerodynamics, sharper lines, a wider stance and superior rear suspension. VTI-S Jazz also comes with sexy alloy wheels and front and rear sports bumpers. You get a choice of two athletic yet remarkably fuel efficient engines and fuel consumption of just 5.8 litres per 100kms. You also get the maximum amount of power out of your fuel, or as we say you’ll “drive every drop”, it’s all thanks to the amazing i-VTEC engine. Her 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine delivers 88 kw, making her among the most powerful in her class. She also features a leading edge 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission and her sporty new paddle-shift on the VTI-S puts the pleasure of shifting gears at your fingertips. So what does all this mean to you? Well, just jump in an take a ride, at Daddow’s Honda Cooroy. This is where Jazz gets serious. When it comes to protection, Jazz is full of ingenious safety features. Her driver and front passenger SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and front seatbelt pretensioners provide excellent protection. You can just put everything in the back of Jazz, she won’t mind whatsoever, and the best thing is everyone will still be completely comfortable, no matter how long the journey. The ride is smooth, quiet and very comfy, and it’s all thanks to Jazz’s well designed body. Her solid structure helps eliminate noise and vibration without increasing her overall weight and her double glovebox is sure to come in handy, and so is her instant fuel consumption indicator. Test drive the new Jazz at Daddow’s Honda. Contact Neil Dwyer or Simon Murray. Details see ad on page 19.

BIKE ART X-POSED

enilworth Celebrates! From 26 September to 4 October. The bike art is part of the Kenilworth Celebrates! festival. It’s a highly appropriate theme considering Kenilworth is set on one of the best bike routes in South East Queensland. Bike enthusiasts share a common appreciation for the universal language of bike themes. The strength of passion transcends any barriers of communication and the message always has been quite clear - bike riders are passionate about their bikes. • Bring your art and take part. • Kenilworth Hotel will be the main venue again for the bike-art display. • Show and Shine presentation at 2pm. • A special guest from Hervey Bay will be doing a two day workshop on pencil drawing.

enilworth Pool underwent some necessary repairs over the winter-time. The kiosk and change rooms’ floor areas have been resurfaced with an easy clean “non slip” component. The pool itself has undergone considerable overall refurbishment. Everything is ready now to get the pool filled in the coming week. Treena and Diane the swimming instructors are organised for Swimming Training at the end of August and the official opening of the pool is planned for 19 September. Everything is in working order now, as Kenilworth Swimming Pool is getting ready for a hot season. We are looking forward to seeing you and your friends at the pool. The pool also wants to extend a big thank you to the helpers who came along to the working bee and volunteered their time. Photo and article Birgit Kehr

HAIL STORM
ot much of the 21.5mm we received in on Wednesday 12 August storm went into our tank. As the photo shows the pea sized hail filled the guttering and poured out over the down pipe. We were amazed to see the amount of hail at the bottom of the down pipes around the house. Even more surprising, some of it was still there the next morning.
