The Score Television Network often referred to as The Score, (stylized as theScore) is a Canadian cable television specialty channel providing sports news, highlights, information and analysis programming along with live event sports coverage. At the bottom of the screen the channel provides a 24/7 ticker that provides news and scores of sporting events. The network is dedicated to feeding the insatiable hunger for sports, theScore is the true home for the hardcore sports fan. theScore gives fans the platform to have their say via web, and mobile – whenever and wherever they are.

theScore was originally launched in 1994 as “Sportscope”. It was a sports score network airing in seven Canadian provinces. The scheduled programming for the network was a non-content-based, alphanumeric text rotation of sports scores and news. This type of programming did not require a license from the CRTC. In 1996 the network was granted a license as an English language specialty channel titled “Sportscope Plus”. In 1997 the channel launched as Headline Sports and began as a national 24-hour anchor-at-desk sport news, highlights, and scores. The channel also included a ticker at the bottom of the screen that provided news and scores, just as it still does today. In 2000, Headline Sports’ license was amended to allow live sports programming under certain conditions, thus re-branding the stations as “The Score”. In 2006, The Score updated its ticker and launched a new HD channel. Recently, The Score was put up for sale and Rogers Media acquired the network.

The Score HD is a high definition simulcast of The Score. It is currently available through all major TV providers in Canada. Until early 2008, most programming was Standard-definition 4:3 stretched to 16:9. Their true HD programming includes Serie A soccer, National Basketball Association basketball, the Vanier Cup, NCAA coverage and WWE’s SmackDown and Raw. Later in 2008, The Score began airing shows from its new multi-million dollar HD studio, located in Toronto and now most shows and highlights are in true HD. The Score can also be found Online at thescore.com as well as twitter, facebook, google +, and instagram.

ESPN ESPN is an American global cable television network focusing on sports-related programming including live and pretaped event telecasts, sports talk shows, and other original programming. ESPN is known for its humor, wit and irreverence. The brand has a passion for sports which is apparent in the energy and enthusiasm displayed on all platforms. ESPN cares about the community of fans–regardless of age, gender or origin—and the social bond that sports enables.

AUDIENCE ESPN targets those who love sports. They wish to serve sports fans wherever sports are watched, listened to, discussed, debated, read about or played. Their network reaches a 64% Male audience and 89% are between the Ages of 15-18. 19% Hispanic, 29% AfricanAmerican and nearly half (47%) reside in Urban Areas TYPOGRAPHY: PLAYOFF ESPN has designed an original font for use in new brand identities, for graphic templates and collateral. The design inspiration comes from a look back at the typographic history of the company since its birth in 1979, combined with a more modern, innovative and universal aesthetic. The result is a unique but also familiar typeface that will embody the past, present and future of the ESPN Brand. The new font, called Playoff, is available in serif and sans serif faces, and is becoming the basis of a new design architecture for the ESPN brand.

ESPN TAGLINE ESPN’s tag line, “The Worldwide Leader in Sports” is a registered trademark. It can appear as part of the logo or in a variety of type treatments depending on the context. It is commonly used as a sign-off at the end of programming, and its use serves to amplify the ESPN brand. It should most often appear in the approved headline fonts, Playoff, Helvetica, or Arial. The choice whether to use the tag line or not is tied to the business and aesthetic needs of a given layout. However, the ESPN logo without the tag line is simpler and preferred for marketing and promotion. LOGO Since 1979, the ESPN Logo has been a symbol of sports programming excellence. Over the past thirty years the company has evolved through innovation, technology, design and industry-leading content to become the worldwide leader in sports. The current logo, designed in 1985, is powerful, recognizable and timeless. Use this logo as a punctuation or signature to the overall message. The correct lean angle for the ESPN logo is 97 degrees, measured from the horizontal axis clockwise to the vertical of the letter “E”. The correct proportion for the ESPN logo, width to height, is 4 to 1. The specs for correct angle and proportion of the ESPN logo also apply to the ESPN found within each logo in the entire family of ESPN logos.

CONCEPT

Noir

Noir is a cable television network that features famous Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Many of the films shown would stem from the film noir period of the early 1940s to the late 1950s. The aim of this network would be to revamp the film noir period and showcase it’s importance to younger generations, as well as serve as a blast from the past to those who grew up watching these films.

COMPETITION AMC American Movie Classics - American cable television specialty channel that primarily airs movies, along with a limited amount of original programming. Turner and Classics A movie-oriented cable television channel, owned by the Turner Broadcasting System, featuring commercial-free classic movies, mostly from the Turner Entertainment film library, which comprises the pre-May 1986 MGM, RKO and pre-1950 Warner Bros. films. Encore An American premium television channel featuring mainly older and recent blockbuster motion pictures.

VIEWER PROFILE Primarily, this network channel would appeal to younger audiences to shed a fresh, new light on the old Hollywood style fo the film noir period of the 40s and 50s. However, the network would also appeal greatly to those who love film and those who grew up with these film noir classics. PROGRAM HIGLIGHTS Citizen Kane (1941 - Feature Film) American drama film, directed by and starring Orson Welles, portraying the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, a character based in part upon the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, Chicago tycoons Samuel Insull and Harold McCormick, and aspects of Welles’s own life. The Maltese Falcon (1941 - Feature Film) A film noir based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. Directed by John Huston, the film stars Humphrey Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade and Mary Astor as his “femme fatale” client. The story follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette. The Big Sleep (1939 - Feature Film) A hardboiled crime novel by Raymond Chandler, the first in his acclaimed series about detective Philip Marlowe. The work has been adapted twice into film, once in 1946 and again in 1978. The story is set in Los Angeles, California.The story is noted for its complexity, with many characters double-crossing one another and many secrets being exposed throughout the narrative. The Woman in the Window (1944 - Feature Film) A film noir directed by Fritz Lang that tells the story of psychology professor Richard Wanley (Edward G. Robinson) who meets and becomes enamored of a young femme fatale. Based on J. H. Wallis’ novel Once Off Guard, the story features two surprise twists at the end.

S TA R K will primarily play American films from the 1940s and beyond and can be categorized into classics, neo noir, adaptations, science fiction, international and parodies. Classics will consist of the films that were made as a part of the film noir genre during the 1940s and 1950s. Neo Noir will include films that reflect the cynicism and possibility of nuclear annihilation of the era. This category also introduces new innovations that were not available with earlier noir films. Adaptations of the film noir genre come apparent in later years starting in 1980 and going on until present day. Incorporating science fiction into film noirs began as a new trend during the 1960s. Taking on the themes and characteristics of film noir also gained popularity overseas and many other countries produced foreign films of the genre. Finally, creating parodies of film noir themes and techniques have also become apparent in later years.

S TA R K is a cable television network featuring films that encompass the genre of film noir. Many of the films shown would stem from the film noir period of the early 1940s to the late 1950s. In addition, STARK will revive the genre by showing films from the Neo Noir era and beyond that have been inspired by the central themes of film noir as well as stylistic and tonal frameworks of the genre. The focus of this network is to uncover film noir and bring it out of the shadows for new generations to enjoy.
