Rainbow Bridge with Tokyo Tower

T

okyo has always remained one of the most unique cities in the world. From the beginning of its rich history, Tokyo has been the site of many incredible innovations. This is one reason why you may be enchanted by the sights and sounds of a Tokyo tour. As the bustling capital city of Japan, Tokyo provides a unique travel experience whether you are in to history, culture, art, shopping, or are a budding foodie, you could spend months here and still have things left to see and do. It’s the most populated city in the world, a city where 90% of residents read a comic book daily, and one of the few places on earth where riding a bike is usually quicker than driving. Tokyo is magical, eternally confusing to outsiders and yet perpetually alluring. With so many attractions vying for your attention during your first trip to Tokyo, here are some of the places most popular with tourists, and some of the lesser known places.

10

If you’re traveling with family or a few friends, staying in one of the central hostels for groups is a great way to get your bearings and possibly meet some like-minded travelers who can give you tips along the way. Since there is so much to see here, you really should try to make the most of your time, both during the day and the evening (the city has some of the best nightlife in the world). Just a short walk from Tokyo Station, the Imperial Palace is a perfect place to begin an exploration of the city. Built on the site where Edo Castle stood, from 1603 to 1867, the palace was constructed over the castle when the shogunate was overthrown. It was destroyed in World War II, but was rebuilt in the original style. Most of the grounds are closed except on January 2nd, when the public are allowed in to see the imperial family when they appear on their balcony. Inside the palace are government buildings, family living spaces, and several gardens, some of which you can visit.

worldtravel | 2015 Two

The Tsukiji Market also known as the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, this market is a city landmark and a must for sushi lovers and those curious to see the daily ritual of fresh fish and vegetables being auctioned. As one of the world’s largest seafood markets, it is a must see for tourists. If you’re staying in one of the hostels for groups nearby, you’re in luck, as the market is small and can only accommodate up to 120 tourists per day, so you actually have to apply to visit. This means queuing up well before the 5am opening time in order to be able to apply to one of the two groups allowed in. The ambiance and excitement of the markets makes it well worth it however. Spend a day people watching at Yoyogi Park. Although you could spend any day here, the most exciting and interesting, from an observer’s point of view, is Sunday. The park is enormous. It’s a former airstrip, army parade ground and site for the Olympic Games in 1964. All sorts of people gather on Sunday,

from jazz musicians and jamming guitarists, to martial artists, singers and jugglers. This motley ensemble of characters is fascinating to watch. What better way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture than by taking in the national sport? Sumo Wrestling! There are few spectacles more intriguing than the sight of two barely-covered behemoths squaring off against one another, each with the intention of taking his opponent down or bundling him out of the ring. Sumo is a source of national pride in Japan and the wrestlers are viewed as heroes. For a more Americanised sporting event, if you are in Tokyo in the right season, you can pop into the Tokyo Dome and see the city’s baseball team take on a team from other parts of Japan, China, or even the USA.

Shibuya Crossing

When it comes to fashion, Tokyo is beyond cutting edge. The colors and designs are like something from another planet. Head straight to Harajuku (Harajuku station on the Yamanote line) and spend the day seeing what sorts of new threads you can spot. Close to the station is Takeshita-dori, where you’ll find many independent designers stores, Yoyogi Park, where you can spot gaggles of Gothic Lolitas, and Omotesando, for high-end fashion outlets.

Traffic at Night

Akihabara, located close to the Tokyo railway station, is the place to go (in the world) for electronics. You’ll find absolutely everything here, from state-of-the-art technology in the Laox store, to secondhand stuff in the back streets. Akihabara is also a hobbyists’ paradise, with large communities of manga and anime lovers hanging out. If things start smelling a little fishy, don’t panic; you’ve probably just found yourself in the world’s biggest fish market. Tsukiji Fish Market is home to every imaginable type of seafood ... and then some. The food is excellent, and you can stop off for a bowl of ramen or a plate of sushi while you’re there. Be prepared to get a little confused, particularly if you’re trying to decipher a map. In terms of cultural experiences, it doesn’t get much better (or bigger) than this. Shibuya Crossing is probably the most famous crossing in the world. There aren’t many places in the world where people go just the cross an intersection! It’s a five-way intersection and is surrounded many shops primarily for clothing and fashion.

Projection on Tokyo Station Tokyo Disneyland is a definite for the kids. They will almost certainly realise the Cinderella Castle which looks just like the one at the start of every Disney film. The Big Sight is also known as Tokyo International Exhibition Centre. Its unique design was featured in WILL.I.AM’s music video #That Power. Mt Fuji is one of the most recognisable mountains in the world. It is volcanic which explains why it sits alone as oppose to being in a line as part of a mountain range. It is Japan’s highest mountain at 3,776 metres. It can be climbed within a day, with the minimum ascent time of 4-7 hours up the Fujinomiya Trail. There are four different trails to the summit, each a varying degree of difficulty and time. Sure, there are the “common” sites to see, places to visit and landmarks to photographs when you go on a Tokyo tour. These are common staples on a vacation to any land, but one must realize that when visiting Tokyo, there is great potential to be exposed to incredible, eye opening events and sites that are thoroughly unique to Tokyo and represent an experience that simply can not be duplicated anywhere else in the world. To demonstrate how unique of a city Tokyo is, all one needs to do is look at the recent unveiling of a robot domestic helper. Yes, a robot domestic helper. This

12

worldtravel | 2015 Two

Tokyo’s colourful cityscape Big Sight Exhibition Centre

“creature” was devised by a Tokyo based company with the hopes that it will eventually develop the complex motor skills required to perform domestic tasks effectively. Understandably, you may consider this to be a bizarre concept, something right out of a science fiction novel (or even an old episode of THE JETSONS). However, it is very real and can be seen on display in Tokyo this very day. Unique and interesting events such as the “robot unveiling” are somewhat commonplace in Japan as the country is the epicenter of technological and electronic advancements in the world. For most of us, such scientific achievements may seem unimaginable. Nevertheless, you will encounter them on display. The aspect that makes a Tokyo tour special is not the fact that one is visiting a city that has never seen before. While it is true that the uniqueness of visiting a new land holds a sense of excitement and wonder, a Tokyo tour takes on an added dimension of being special because the city is a constantly evolving one that mixes the traditions of the past with the great leap forwards into the future as typified by its unique pop culture influenced technological society. It is one of, if not the most colourful place on the planet. A place with infinate shopping locations, beautiful people and epic views, Tokyo is a place you just cannot ignore when organising a holiday. X

he Italian Riviera and the French Riviera are among the most popular tourist spots in the world. The historic nineteenth century architecture, the miles of blinding white beaches, nice and warm temperature throughout the year and out of the world cuisine, shopping and entertainment options make these places any vacationers dream. This coastline is extremely beautiful due to the amazing combination of clear blue waters, soft sands and perfect weather. These area’s beaches are a perfect place for those who love beaches to visit at almost any time of the year, since the climate and its temperatures are very homogeneous most of the time. Its Mediterranean climate is sunny, hot, dry summers and mild winters. Temperatures are moderated by the Mediterranean days of frost are rare in the winter and in summer the maximum rarely exceeds 30°C. Strong winds such as the Mistral, a cold dry wind from the northwest or from the east, are

another characteristic, particularly in the winter. It is a wondrous experience to visit French Riviera tourist attractions for a vacation. Moreover, it is a beautiful Mediterranean coastline of the south of France, and amongst French people this place is famous as Cote d’Azur. Until the end of the 18th century, the area later known as the Côte d’Azur was a remote and impoverished region, known mostly for fishing, olive groves and the production of flowers for perfume (manufactured in Grasse). A new phase began when the coast became a fashionable health resort for the British upper class in the late 18th century. This beautiful French place is famous for cruising and yachting. The French Riviera is a major yachting and cruising area with several marinas along its coast. The climate, cuisine and sophistication of the French River make it one of the most popular yachting destinations

in the world. According to the Côte d’Azur Economic Development Agency, each year the Riviera hosts 50% of the world’s superyacht fleet, with 90% of all superyachts visiting the region’s coast at least once in their lifetime. Monaco, Antibes, Cannes and St Tropez are popular ports for these mega yachts. St. Jean Cap Ferrat is the most beautiful palazzo, and the nine beautiful gardens of this villa are simply fabulous. Moreover, the Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild transformed this magnificent palazzo as one of the most visited tourist attractions. In addition, this awesome villa offers the breathtaking view of the bay of Villefranche. And, the gardens of this palace are decorated with lovely flowered and shaded paths, ponds, and fountains. In addition, the view of the shoreline from the Colline du Chateau is very beautiful, and the man-made waterfall of this place is so tastefully made that it looks completely natural.

After enjoying the whimsical beaches with enough basking in sun, tourists can enjoy the variety of water attractions. Furthermore, there are many huge water parks in the French part of the Riviera. And, water parks of French Riviera tourist attractions offers a lovely experience of swimming with Dolphins. Also, the holidaymaker can explore the flora and fauna museums to derive maximum pleasure. In addition, the tourist attractions along the French Riviera are a perfect vacation place for all kinds of great leisure activities. Your trip to the French Riviera is incomplete without snorkeling in the sea. The fun loving tourist never misses the chance to put a snorkel, and explore the animal and plants life underwater. In addition, the sea is house to various marine lives, for instance brilliantly tinted fishes. Moreover, the snorkeling proves to be the most awe-inspiring experience of the French Riviera tourist attractions.

Monaco, as you may know, is the casino capital of Europe. It is only 15 kilometres east of Nice, and about ten kilometres to the west of the Italian border. Monaco consists of several hills and a peninsula that juts south into the Mediterranean, and its total area is less than one square mile. But in that square mile is some of the most expensive and luxurious property in the world. Every minute you spend here is like in a dream and this is why so many people love Monaco.

Monaco is the playground of the rich and famous in Europe. Monte Carlo has some of the best casinos in the world and people flock from around the world to try out their luck in these casinos. The most popular casino and night spot is the Place du Casino, around which most of Monte Carlo’s social life revolves. Monacos spring arts festival, Printemps des Arts, hosts the world’s best operatic, ballet, symphonic, and chamber music performers. You can enjoy world-class opera, ballet, and orchestra year round.

Monaco refuses to tax its citizens’ incomes, and for a very long time was also a tax haven for international businesses. Revenue for the government comes instead from tourism and commercial transactions. French is the language of choice, though most Monagasques are multilingual. Monaco is wellknown as one of Europe’s most luxurious resort areas. It once was primarily a winter resort, but now draws visitors year round.

But there’s more to Monaco than just an adult playground. We know from archaeological digs that Monaco has been inhabited since the Stone Age; you can view artifacts in the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology. Its history includes visits from the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. Its modern history began when the Grimaldi family of Genoa claimed it; they still rule the principality today. Monaco has only been ruled

by France for about twenty years of its history (right after Napoleon conquered it), but their fortunes have long been tied to France. Le Louis XV is one of France’s, and Europe’s, premier restaurants, with Alain Ducasse, one of the greatest chefs in the world, designing its cuisine. You can expect to spend a lot of money here on this, but you will find the food worth it. You can also try the Café du Paris, where supercilious waiters fawn over you, jet-setters and titled guests lounge at the bars.

There are few places to stay cheaply in Monaco, so if you’re looking for inexpensive lodging, you’re probably better off outside the principality. But if you don’t mind paying a little more for a night or two, there are marvelous grand hotels here. The Hermitage, the Hotel du Paris, and the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel all have played host to many of the shining lights of Europe, America, and the Middle East. You can save a little money by staying at the Alexandra, with almost the feel of a bed and breakfast, and just a little north of the casino.

Monaco plays host to some of the worlds greatest annual motor racing events. The Grand Prix de Monaco is the crown jewel event in the Formula One calendar and is held alongside the harbour in May every year. The Rallye Monte Carlo is one of the oldest motoring events in the world still going. Monte Carlo hosted the ceremonies, however much of the rally is run in the hills across the french border.

The Italian Riviera offers amazing beaches in which visitors can enjoy a relaxing sunbath as well as swim in crystalline waters. One of the main areas of the Italian Riviera is the Riviera Dei Fiori. The Riviera Dei Fiori or Riviera of Flowers goes from Cervo to Ventimiglia in the west, and is the spot of the Italian Riviera which is closest to France. This area offers several hotels, resorts and entertainment areas for

18

worldtravel | 2015 Two

tourists to choose as well as typical Italian Riviera’s beautiful beaches. Another very visited Italian Riviera’s spot is the area known as Riviera Delle Palme. Riviera Delle Palme is the Italian Riviera area located at the central section of the Ligurian coastline. This area has a historic beach resort called Alassio among many other great spots, such as Finale Liguria, and amazing beaches. Visitors who go to Riviera Delle Palme could also choose among many options related to their entertainment such as casinos, discos, bars, and spectacle centers among others. San Remo is just 15 kilometres east of the french border. The Ariston Theatre here hosts the celebrated annual Sanremo Music Festival, a very popular song contest held in the city since 1951. This festival is what inspired the Eurovision Song Contest, which started in 1956. For years the Sanremo festival selected the Italian entry for Eurovision.

Sanremo is the finish of the classic Milan – San Remo cycle race. It is one of the five big events of the cycling season. The event is traditionally held in March, one of the first major fixtures on the season. Genoa is the biggest city on the Italian Riviera. The city is filled to the brim with historical buildings and landmarks that are popular with tourist groups. The Lighthouse of Genoa (Lanterna di Genova) is nearly 475 years old and used to be the single tallest lighthouse in the world up until 1902. There’s a museum nearby that’s dedicated to all things about the Lanterna, if you’re interested. If you’re looking to discover something old, how about Santa Maria di Castello? It’s a church that’s been around for over 1,100 years! From the numerous frescoes to a jaw-dropping high altar, this is one church that is chock-full of history waiting to be explored.

If you want to see how royalty lived in the 17th and 18th century, then you’ll definitely want to visit the Royal Palace of Genoa. Not only will you find plenty of paintings and frescoes, but the furnishings of the palace help convey a sense of life to the palace you won’t get from a museum. Portofino is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in the world. In the 60’s and 70’s stars like Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, often visited Portofino. Today it is still a meeting place of the jet-set and international tourism. Portofino is an area of only two kilometres, and it is forbidden to enter with your car. There are many restaurants you can taste fish specialties, which are always fresh. The most common delicacies are shrimp, crabs and lobsters. Almost all restaurants offer a wide selection of wines, especially white wine.

Not far away from the harbour of Portofino is the Church of St. George. The celebration of St. George is on April 23, which is held in the famous square with Bonfires. An evening with a huge fire, music and seafood specialties. There are many famous fashion shops here as there are in most italian towns. These include Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Gucci, Giorgio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. In addition to these, there are pretty boutique stores with special handmade clothes, bikinis and sandals. La Spezia is the second largest city in the Italian Riviera preceded just by Genoa. It is one of the main Italian military and commercial harbours and hosts the arsenal of the Italian Navy. As well as the Naval Muesem, La Spezia also has the National Transportation Museum and Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art amongst others.
