D av i d M i t c h e l l David Mitchell, born in 1964 in Brighton, UK, began his career as a photographer in the early eighties in London, Florence and Milan. In 1991 he moved to Hong Kong where he found instant success shooting for prestigious fashion labels including Christian Dior and Laura Biagiotti. He worked almost exclusively in black & white, creating a unique signature style with conscious echoes of Jacques-Henri Lartigue. His international reputation growing quickly, Mitchell was engaged to shoot editorial for international fashion magazines Vogue and Elle. He was the first successful foreign photographer on the dynamic Thai fashion scene, shooting extensively for top publications. His work became recognized by the advertising industry and he continued to expand commercially building a roster of esteemed clients such as Singapore Airlines, Mercedes-Benz, Sony, Hong Kong Bank, Ericsson. Adult onset of Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (LTLE), a diagnosis made over a decade ago, made it increasingly difficult to work commercially, and provided the window to self-discovery as a fine artist. Auras (a type of seizure) produce prolonged déjà vu experiences, conjuring emotional affiliation with places and things. Mitchell makes large, luminous abstractions that look like stained-glass windows designed by a color-field painter. Created with found materials, such as fabric, paper, tape and sheets of colored plastic, he creates collages that juxtapose blocks of hot, cool, and sugar-sweet colors (the spectrum veers from fauve to Necco wafer). The pictures are Mitchell’s attempt to give form to the auras he experiences as a result of his Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Mitchell has been the subject of two solo exhibitions at Jim Kempner Fine Art. Lyle Rexer, the author of The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography, wrote the essay for the catalogue which accompanied his second show. His photographs are in private collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
