Welcome
Wow, just like that – we’re into autumn after what has been the most awesome, whirlwind summer at the farm and wildlife park! Where do I start? Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your huge support over the last few months. It has been an absolute delight to see so many new and familiar faces, young and old – and I can honestly say that it feels like we’ve never been busier. We have so much exciting news for you…our gorgeous Suffolk Punch fillies, Annabelle and Annie, are in foal – this is an amazing milestone in our efforts to help vital conservation work to protect these incredible horses which are even rarer than the giant panda!

I can’t wait to hear the patter of tiny hooves and see their beautiful foals horsing around. I’m sure that along with baby tapir, Tobias, giant anteater, Basil, and our Barbary macaques, they are going to be huge stars. Shhhh…don’t tell Steve McQueen, our mischievous meerkat – he always loves to be the centre of attention! We’ve also had rare breed Cameroon lambs, newborn Somali sheep, Pygmy kids and an all-female litter of Middle White piglets join our ever-growing family, along with a new black swan and Claude, a Highland bull who is staying with us as a guest to see if he shows any interest in romancing our female cattle. Fingers crossed for some more babies… We very much look forward to sharing The Good Life with you over the coming months. Autumn is such a wonderful season, and our stunning woodland is heaving with activity as the animals and insects prepare for chillier days ahead. So, wrap up and embrace the great outdoors!

e are delighted to announce that our beautiful Suffolk Punches, Annie and Annabelle, who joined us last year are now both expecting! Working very closely with The Suffolk Punch Trust, our gorgeous fillies have become pregnant and are expecting pure-bred Suffolk Punch foals. Annie is in foal to stallion Tinglestone Cyclone James through artificial insemination – with thanks to Ben Ryder-Davies and Bruce McKim – while Annabelle is in foal to Colony

Eli through natural breeding. Tinglestone Cyclone James is owned by HRH Princess Anne, who is patron of the Suffolk Horse Society. The Suffolk Punch horse is the oldest English breed of working horse and critically endangered. It is a priority species on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s watchlist. The Suffolk Punch Trust was founded to help protect the iconic heavy horse through its established breeding programme, raising public awareness and training a new generation of
professionals to work with these beautiful creatures. Traditionally, the Suffolk Punch was bred to work the clay soil of East Anglia, but it’s a versatile breed and still used in farming. As a critically endangered breed, it is vital that Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park helps to secure the future for this stunning horse and with two births on the way at the same time, we are doubly proud – we just can’t wait to hear the patter of tiny hooves!

Breaking news… It’s been a really busy time at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park with a bounty of births and new residents checking in. We have welcomed an array of African domestic species and also traditional rare breeds. Our Cameroon and Somali lambs and Pygmy goat kids can’t wait to meet you! “The two Somali lambs are lovely, with long legs! If you think of any good names for our new arrivals, be sure to let us know,” says General Manager Stevie Sheppard.
We are thrilled to have won a Travellers' Choice Award from Tripadvisor! It is a testament to how hard our team have worked to deliver an amazing experience for all our visitors since we reopened in April. Read more about our other awards on p16 & 17.
There has been plenty of girl power with the arrival of a lovely litter of female Middle White piglets – you will find them and their mum, opposite The Hair of the Hog, our woodland pub. On loan for breeding, we have Claude, a magnificent Highland bull, who has joined our two ladies in their enclosure. We really hope they get friendly as young Highland cows look like adorable teddy bears! We’re delighted that our female black swan has found love! Our friends at Shepreth Wildlife Park in Royston, Hertfordshire, had a lone male black swan and brought him along so they could be united. They have bonded exceptionally well and make a striking pair, often found in the capybara enclosure.

e’re delighted to tell you that Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park has become the first ever recipient of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s (RBST) new Rare Breeds Approved Associate accreditation. The award recognises our excellence in educating about the importance of Britain’s endangered native livestock and equine breeds, and our work to conserve their unique genetic characteristics. Jimmy Doherty, who has been President of the RBST since 2017, says: “We are proud to be a member of RBST and becoming the first Approved Associate epitomises what we stand for and reflects the hard work that the livestock team does to ensure we play our part in rare breed conservation. “Although Jimmy’s Farm has evolved into a wildlife park, our native breeds remain close to our hearts, and we continue to share RBST’s mission to ensure that we don’t lose the incredible diversity of breeds that are part of our heritage.” Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park is also accredited with zoo status by the British Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). It provides education and conservation for more than 80 different species including endangered mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates. The farm runs crucial breeding programmes which help towards the survival of a number of ‘priority’ rare native livestock and equine breeds, including Suffolk Punch horses, Large Black pigs and Middle White pigs, as well as ‘at risk’ breeds such as British White cattle, Devon Closewool sheep and Bagot goats. Christopher Price, Chief Executive of RBST, adds: “We are thrilled to award Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park our first ever Approved Associate accreditation. RBST has administered a successful accreditation scheme for farm parks for many years, creating a strong network which makes an important contribution for rare breeds survival. “But interest has been growing from establishments which differ in mission and scope from farm parks, but which are dedicated to RBST’s rare breed conservation objectives and values. “Our new Approved Associate scheme provides the opportunity to extend the benefits of RBST Approval for our rare breeds. I congratulate the team at Jimmy’s Farm on becoming the first Rare Breeds Approved Associate, and I thank Jimmy for his ongoing leadership and dedication as RBST President.” Like RBST’s farm park accreditation scheme, the new Rare Breeds Approved BRONZE Associate scheme sets standards of information and procedures, provides advice, and co-ordinates joint conservation projects.

Our new Barbary macaque enclosure has scooped a bronze prize in the exhibit category of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) annual awards! Built last winter to house the first ever primates at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, the enclosure provides the perfect environment for two groups of Barbary macaques, the only species of monkey without a tail. The enclosure includes four end of service shipping containers, which were converted to provide comfy, warm abodes, kindly donated by MSC UK. Our other friends at Team Building with BITE designed an amazing adventure playground where our mischievous primates can get up to plenty of monkey business. We’re also delighted that our TV series during lockdown Spring Farm, followed by the at Jimmy’s Farm sequel Autumn at Jimmy’s Farm, earned us a BIAZA award for PR, Advertising and Digital Media.

They’ve been flapping their wings for as long as 150 million years. Archaeopterux, which lived at the end of the Jurassic period, is thought to be the earliest known bird. An iconic fossil, discovered in limestone formation in Bavaria, Germany, in 1861, it is widely accepted by scientists as the oldest bird found, but potentially even earlier ones have since been identified. From the tiniest hummingbird to the largest ostrich, birds come in all shapes and sizes and thrive in many habits, from the icy shores of Antartica to the hot tropics. They have an essential role to play in the world’s ecosystems, as part of the food chain, spreading seeds, pollinating plants and controlling pests. However, habitat loss and climate change are threatening birds across the planet, including the UK. “Birds play a vital role in ecosystems and in our lives,” says Professor Richard Gregory, Head of Monitoring Conservation Science for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). “They can help to keep pest populations in check, distribute seeds and
nutrients, and are themselves a food source to any number of predators in a healthy web of life. “But UK birds are in trouble, and in the past 50 years we have lost 19 million pairs of breeding birds – largely because of habitat loss and change – on top of which climate warming now adds further peril. Certain agricultural practices have removed nesting and feeding places for birds, and reduced invertebrate numbers, a vital food source for breeding birds; while the climate crisis is making weather ever more unpredictable with knock-on effects for bird survival. “The good news is that you can help by taking some simple steps in your own garden – birds need food, water, and shelter, all of which you can provide,” adds Prof Gregory. “Put out insectfriendly plants, or plants that produce berries. You can also make a bird bath, or even a pond, and provide shelter in the form of nest boxes or plant-life. You can also make green choices in the way you live to help the planet. Importantly, you can lobby government to make the legal changes that will ensure wildlife is protected and supported all across the UK, beyond your doorstep.”

Ixworth chicken
Native to Suffolk, this rare breed bird originated in the village of Ixworth in 1932. It almost disappeared in the 1970s but has gradually recovered. The Ixworth has pure white plumage with a bright red comb and orange or red eyes.
Mandarin duck
Sebastopol goose
Tiny and stunningly beautiful, mandarin ducks have suffered from habitat destruction and there are now fewer than 1,000 pairs in native China, though they are much more common in Japan and the UK. The flamboyant males lose their bright plumage following breeding season and they resemble the grey females for the summer months of the year. You can see these comical guys in our tropical house.
A breed of domestic goose, descended from the Greylag goose which was first exhibited in England in 1860. It was also referred to as a Danubian goose and is believed to have developed somewhere in Central Europe along the Danube and the Black Sea.
Black swan
Black swans are large birds with mostly black plumage and red bills. They are herbivores and feed on aquatic plants. The male black swan tends to spend more time on the nest than a female. Both mum and dad share responsibility of looking after cygnets.
The Buff Orpington is a rare breed with a very placid, friendly and docile nature, one that is tolerant of being handled. They are one of the best birds for the first-time keeper and for those with children – an ideal ‘pet’ chicken. This breed was created in 1894 and named after the town in Kent where the originator, William Cook, had a farm.
Emu
Emus are soft-feathered, brown, flightless birds with long necks and legs, and can reach up to 1.9 metres in height. They are the second largest bird in the world – beaten only by the ostrich – and have two sets of eyelids, one for blinking and the other for keeping the dust out.

Peafowl
An incredibly ornate type of pheasant, the peafowl originates from India and is renowned for its stunning tail feathers and displays to attract a mate. Our males will display to anything throughout the warmer months – even a fence post – and our peahen loves to pose in a mirror.

Laughing kookaburras
Red breasted goose
The largest member of the kingfisher family, laughing kookaburras originate from Australia and are particularly known for their peculiar ‘laughing’ song. Our pair, Karl and Susan, make a real racket when they get excited and can be heard right across the park. They are being trained to fly to the hand and will feature in displays.
The red breasted goose is a charming little bird with a loud piercing call. It ranges from Siberia in summer to Eastern Europe in the winter. They are listed as ‘vulnerable to extinction’, and we aim to help with their conservation by breeding them at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park. We re-homed our male red breasted goose from the RSPCA.

Sebright Bantam chicken This is a British breed of bantam chicken – a miniature bird that has no corresponding larger version and one of the oldest recorded breeds of its type. It was created as an ornamental breed in the early 19th century and is named after Sir John Saunders Sebright.
Embden goose
A large duck native to Central and South America, Muscovy ducks may be tropical, but they adapt well to cooler habitats – although their favourite food item of mosquitos isn’t as common in Suffolk! The male’s face is covered in fleshy lumps, and they have a low, breathy call.
The Embden – or Emden as it’s also known – is a German breed of domestic white goose named after a town that lies in the north-west of the country. This breed is one of the oldest domestic breeds with records dating back about 200 years.
Rhea
Rheas are large birds that live on the grasslands in South America with grey-brown plumage, long legs and long necks, similar in appearance to an ostrich but smaller. While they cannot fly, they can run fast and use their wings for balance. Male rheas are very handson dads, sitting on eggs and taking care of their babies after they hatch.

Penguins at risk of extinction Almost all Emperor penguin colonies may be wiped out by 2100 as climate change triggers ice melt.
Shocking research predicts 98 per cent of Emperor penguin colonies may be pushed to the brink of extinction within 80 years due to global warming.
650,000 There are currently about 270,000 to 280,000 breeding pairs of Emperor penguins, or 625,000 to 650,000 individuals
Around 70 per cent of colonies will be in danger by 2050, according to the study published in the Global Change Biology scientific journal, which has found that significant declines in Antarctica where Emperor penguins breed and feed are to blame. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has recently announced plans to list the species as ‘threatened’ under the Endangered Species Act.
200 On land, they may look a little clumsy, but Emperor penguins are fantastic swimmers and can dive deeper than any other bird, often reaching depths of more than 200 metres

‘Don’t let fear stop you!’ All conquering endurance adventurer, broadcaster, conservationist and regenerative farmer, Ness Knight, talks exclusively about her incredible, record-breaking adventures. What are your overriding memories of wildlife, nature and being outdoors as a child? I grew up in South Africa in the concrete city of Johannesburg, a place of rough edges, raw conflict and incredible culture. I didn’t have the luxury of wilderness, but our family did manage to escape to some of southern Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves – a different kind of rawness to the one I was used to in the city. I think the stark contrast between these two extraordinary worlds left me with a yearning to explore planet Earth many years later. When I moved to England at the age of 15, a blunt realisation dawned on me. The human/wildlife conflict I saw in Africa was not a story confined to Africa. It was ripe in the UK, too. It just looked a little different. We have so many ancient livestock species headed for the endangered lists, much of our iconic wildlife is threatened by housing, road and rail development, by human encroachment, and overall biodiversity is falling at a rate of knots. My strongest and most potent memories from childhood all revolve www.jimmysfarm.com

around the great outdoors, whether it was building a treehouse in my backyard to escape bath times (not much has changed in my latter years) or riding on the bonnet seat of a clapped out, old Land Rover sitting toe to tusk with a rhino in the African bush, heart racing. What I can say is that, as a painfully shy child, I felt my most confident in nature. Tell us about your first ever expedition? The first ever expedition I took on was off the back of quitting my city job in London and needing some time to recalibrate. No-one had ever stand-up paddleboarded 1,000 miles in one go before, so that seemed like a good place to start a period of figuring out life, and what direction to go in next. I headed out to the Missouri River in the USA and descended it with a team over two months, from its north western source in the great lakes to the mighty Mississippi to the south east. I had never wild camped, never paddleboarded before and never been on a journey so precarious that it
warranted a GPS tracker and 24-hour, on-call medics for safety. I discovered a love for pushing my mental and physical limits in unpredictable and uncontrollable environments. Every day brought something unexpected, whether that was desperately paddling down wild, swollen waters, with river banks too steep to exit and tornados dropping down to touch ground in every direction surrounding you, while you bare your teeth against hypothermia and pray that the lightning strikes won’t find your carbon fibre paddle. When the expedition was completed, I didn’t feel ready to come home, because I had yet to figure out what that next step in my life and career would be. I set off west across America, following my nose on a solo journey…I accidentally stumbled across the old Route 66 road, taking me through some of the most extravagant, weird and old towns you can find that side of the pond…I came away from that solo journey walking six inches taller. I also came away with a new, very accidental career as an endurance adventurer.

You successfully completed a worldfirst ‘source to sea’ descent of the Essequibo River in Guyana three years ago – what did that involve and how challenging was it? This was an expedition unlike any I have taken on before, one that was all about genuine, old-school exploration. Our team pulled together an international collaboration with the Wai Wai, an indigenous community living in the heart of that pristine, virgin rainforest. Our mission was simple: to find the source of the third largest river in South America, something that had never been found or documented, and then embark on a world first descent of that river from source to sea. The months leading up to the expedition were a drawn-out process of looking at topographic maps and overlaying that information with aerial satellite imagery. The sections of wild rapids often had no aerial imagery from the dry season, which meant we had no idea what to expect or what the route downstream would be like. Vast sections were completely unknown, too, which meant local knowledge, where no human had been, was non-existent. One of the jobs the Wai Wai took on with gusto was to quietly go about noting the state of biodiversity along the length of this mighty river and attempt an estimate of the health of various species populations…their skills and knowledge left me stunned. They use gut instinct and intuition – where we use technology – to tell them what is happening, to far greater success, and are so attuned to their surroundings they end up painting this kind of 360-degree, 3D picture of
the entire jungle around them in realtime…Every sense is used and adds a piece to that understanding. This expedition changed everything for me. Descending the Essequibo River was nothing short of eyeopening for our team, as we paddled from pristine virgin rainforest where the jungle is deafeningly loud with the sounds of the creatures living in it, and on to the scarred landscapes of the mining and logging regions where an eery silence descended on us. With this came a tsunami of detritus and plastics floating past us and out into the ocean. Humans were no longer living harmoniously within the wilderness; we were consuming it. As an explorer, I have spent many years traversing remote regions of planet Earth, immersing myself in wildlife and indigenous communities
“Our planet needs its forests, ocean, biodiversity and atmosphere to be defended and safeguarded in order to keep our world healthy. We are, in short, the guardians of this blue planet.” www.jimmysfarm.com
Celeb interview 2021.indd 28
that have learnt to survive in deserts, jungles, mountains, coastlines and savannahs. I’ve seen how so many ancient cultures have created symbiotic relationships with the natural world around them, perfectly in sync with an age-old understanding that, when you damage or wipe out diversity, you take with it your ability to thrive. Our diverse and fragile ecosystems work collectively as one global organism – so our planet needs its forests, ocean, biodiversity and atmosphere to be defended and safeguarded in order to keep our world healthy. We are, in short, the guardians of this blue planet. You’ve explored and filmed in some amazing and pretty extreme locations – what have been some of the highlights? Without a shadow of a doubt, a solo expedition I embarked on to one of the most remote corners of the world, in northern Namibia. It’s a desolate and unforgiving place, a harsh environment, but one filled with remarkable beauty. The expedition began on the banks of the Kunene River bordering Angola. Navigation was simple enough; head south towards the world’s oldest desert.

Now, it’s one thing planning an expedition from halfway across the world with Google maps, but it is quite another experiencing the realities of life on the ground…What I didn’t know before I left was that Namibia is in the grips of a three-year long drought that has sucked the life out of these lands to the north. Every day temperatures were well in the 40s Celcius, and on day two of cycling alone through lion territory they were due to soar. It peaked at 49 degrees on the day that I was to encounter a fresh lion kill. I remember my lion warden radioing to warn I would be passing a fresh lion kill from the night before. The lions were everywhere. I lost consciousness 200 metres from where he had warned me the lion kill would be located…I have no memory of anything till I woke up in his Defender, having apparently been wandering around aimlessly and totally out of it. Namibia was also a game-changer for me, introducing me to the plight of nomadic, indigenous communities who are being squeezed out of their lands and pushed in the direction of Western ways, a cash economy and threatened by a loss of their culture in the process of trying to survive. It also fortified my love for conservation and my understanding of the fact that, in order to fix the problems our planet (and our own health) faces today, we need to see ourselves as a part of nature, not apart from it. And you learnt some pretty amazing survival skills with the San Bushmen in Namibia? I spent a lot of time with these extraordinary people. Their story is one of resilience, adaptation and deep knowledge. There is a reason why the San are still here after 200,000 years, when all other civilisations have come and gone. They also happen to be the best teachers in the world, which was rather useful as they taught me ancient survival skills from one of the harshest and unforgiving (yet beautiful) environments on the planet.

But as for the vast majority of my travels, I have found an extraordinary friendliness and willingness to help directed my way. The safety aspect of solo travelling as a female has daunted many and stopped many from taking on their travel dreams. Don’t let it. Be cautious and sensible on your travels, but don’t let fear stop you. The world in general is a far nicer place than the media lets on.
When the San walk through their landscape, they are masters of using every single sense at one time. You must have encountered some dangerous moments too on your travels, such as uncovering the truth about the illicit rhino horn trade – did you ever fear for your life and have you felt more vulnerable as a female explorer? Investigating and filming a documentary uncovering the frontlines of the war of poaching, delving into the illicit rhino horn trade was an eye-opener. When you stick your nose into the business of criminal syndicates, expect to paint a very large target on your back. I was warned of other journalists and investigators who had their lives ended in ‘tragic accidents’. I was warned the chances of a tragic accident happening to me would increase the deeper I poked around into my investigations.
Filming was cut short by the arrival of Covid-19 and lockdowns, but when it does resume, I will have to be extremely cautious about my approach to some of the seedier underworlds. Poaching and illegal wildlife trade is big business, and with that comes big risks when attempting to uncover their dealings. As for being a female in these circumstances, I’ve had doors and opportunities open to me because I am female – sometimes because people think I am benign in my femininity, other times because they see a doggedness in me – but equally I have had many doors shut on me. There are certain locations and situations where I have to be aware that my will alone to break the expectations of females in male-dominated settings (specifically, certain cultural expectations, most often in some of the more dangerous and unstable locations) means I have to use my common sense and bring in a male team with me for safety and access.
Tell us about your latest challenge here in the UK with your farm in West Yorkshire – what are hoping to achieve? The San Bushmen and the Wai Wai tribe in the Amazon jungle are a big part of why I am farming, alongside my man, Jake, today. Because I want to not just film the story of those remote cultures who have thrived off the perspective that a viable future revolves around working with nature, not against it, but to do something myself off the back of everything they have taught me. We know that regenerative farming is the missing puzzle piece in the collection of realistic climate change solutions. We know that it is the key to both planetary and human health. And so, we are working hard on regenerating soil, turning our green desert into a biodiverse ecosystem, planting thousands of trees, working with critically endangered British livestock breeds, and running off solar and biomass just to name a few things. All while running a diverse and highly functioning, profitable commercial farm. Jake and I are incredibly passionate about this and are throwing ourselves into this new venture with gusto. Perhaps it is the greatest challenge and adventure I will ever face!

AWESOME AUTUMN
Awaken your senses and explore the woods this magical season. It’s the season of spectacular colours providing a dramatic visual reminder that it’s time to gather food and prepare to hunker down for the colder months ahead. Nothing says autumn like the vibrant red, yellow and orange of leaves falling from woodland trees before decomposing into the ground.
Did you know?
But while autumn with its decay-driven features of nature may appear to represent the end of something, it is also a season heralding change and new beginnings. And for wildlife living in the woods, it’s one of the busiest times of the year.
We now have a new pig enclosure in our woodland. It is currently home to our Middle White pig, Fancy, and her litter of all girls!
The woodland at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park is home to some amazing wildlife, from the elusive badger to the confident Muntjac deer. You may also smell a fox or hear the rustling of the hedgehogs in the leaf litter. So, keep an ear to the ground and don’t forget your binoculars – you won’t want to miss autumn’s animal magic.

Badger
About One of the UK’s most recognised and popular mammals, badgers are powerful animals that form part of the mustelid family, which includes ferrets, otters and pine martins. They live in setts underground, which can be as long as 50 metres, in mixed sex groups known as clans. Autumn antics According to the Badger Trust, badgers weigh most in late autumn as they pile on fat to get them through
39 Woodland 2021.indd 39
the colder, winter months ahead. They then feed less, spending more time inactive underground, and their weight falls away. Favourite food Badgers love earthworms and an adult can eat more than 200 in one single night! It is not recommended to feed badgers as it can cause problems for neighbours. However, a small handful of peanuts should be enough if you feel you need to feed them in extreme weather when worms are scarce.

Muntjac deer About Introduced to the UK from China in the 20th century, this species of deer is prevalent in southeast England.
A small but stocky deer, the Muntjac is about the same size as a medium dog. With a russet brown colour which turns grey in the winter, the Muntjac has a ‘hunched’ appearance due to its rump being higher than its shoulders. According to the British Deer Society, Muntjac are generally solitary or found
www.jimmysfarm.com
Woodland 2021.indd 40
in pairs and peak activity is at dawn or dusk.
Autumn antics The Muntjac is also known as the ‘barking deer’ due to the noise they make in various situations and September is the perfect time to listen out for them. They tend to eat a lot during the autumn to get them through the winter. Favourite food Muntjac deer feed on trees, shrubs, berries and nuts, while tree bark is also an option when other food is scarce.
Hedgehog
About Hedgehogs are found throughout mainland Britain and have a rounded body covered in yellow-tipped spines and a short tail.
They come out at night to look for food – you can hear them grunting as they forage – and, although their eyesight is poor, they have good hearing as well as a heightened sense of smell. Autumn antics Efficient winter nests are essential if hedgehogs are to survive hibernation, according to the British
Hedgehog Preservation Society. In autumn, hedgehogs begin to collect materials such as leaves and grass to build their nests under hedges, logs or piles of brushwood – and most gardens provide all they need for their hibernation homes. A nontreated wooden or plastic storage box buried into a mound will also probably attract hedgehogs. Favourite food Hedgehogs mainly feed on beetles, earwigs, caterpillars, slugs and snails.

Red squirrel About Until the introduction of the grey squirrel from North America in the Victorian era, the red squirrel was a common native species in the UK but has since disappeared from huge areas across the country. According to The Wildlife Trusts charity, the total UK population is now thought to be a mere 120,000, with more than three quarters found in Scotland.
Favourite food Red squirrels are omnivores, eating both plant and animal matter. The seeds of v arious trees make up the majority of their diet, while they enjoy tucking into fungi, green shoots, fruit and berries – with hazelnuts a firm favourite.
Red fox
About The red fox is the largest of the true foxes and is present across the entire northern hemisphere, having colonised large parts of Europe, America, Asia and Africa. A canid – member of the group of animals including wolves, jackals, coyotes and the domestic dog – the red fox has adapted perfectly from living in the countryside to urban and suburban environments.
In colder months, the red squirrel has a thick russet coat and bushy tail, with distinctive tufted ears while the coat and tail are thinner in the summer when the tufts often disappear. Autumn antics Autumn is the best time to see red squirrels when there are fewer leaves on the trees, making them easier to spot as they search for food ahead of the winter. Neither the red or grey squirrel hibernates as they cannot accumulate enough body fat to carry them through the colder months.
Autumn antics According to the charity, The Fox Project, foxes live in family groups for much of the year and mating pairs tend to stay together. They are territorial and male cubs are usually forced out of the territory when they reach maturity in the autumn. Fox screams often sound alarming, but they are no more than conversations. This is usually only problematic for short periods during autumn, when juveniles are dispersing, and in the mating season, between Christmas and early February. Favourite food The red fox is an omnivore that will eat virtually anything, from worms, beetles and berries to small rodents, rabbits and birds.
43 Woodland 2021.indd 43
Red foxes have a long body and tail covered in russet fur, with black fur on their feet and the tips of their ears, along with a white tuft at the end of their tail.

The Butterfly Conservation charity has these top 10 tips for looking after butterflies and moths in your garden this autumn: 1. Make a banquet
Fallen fruit such as berries and apples provide a great feast for Red Admirals, which are often seen in gardens during autumn as they look for food to build up reserves before the colder months. Mushy mangoes also provide a sweet treat.
2. Keep counting
Even in autumn, butterflies and moths are on the wing and, if the weather is on the mild side, it’s possible to see many species still. Log any you see using the iRecord Butterflies free app which will help Butterfly Conservation with its crucial work.
3. Leave the ivy
Don’t trim back on the ivy too early as it can be a lifeline for butterflies and moths in the autumn when other sources of nectar are no longer available. Butterflies like the Pink-barred Sallow and Angle Shades, and the Holly Blue caterpillars can’t get enough of the stuff.
4. Groom the Buddleia
Another great nectar source, Buddleia – known as butterfly bush – can be encouraged to flower well into October if the weather is still fairly mild, so deadhead yours to prolong flowering.
5. Build a bug hotel
Provide some shelter in your garden and create a bug hideout for butterflies and other wildlife – it’s easy to make one using garden waste and odds and ends you find scattered around.
6. Plant bulbs
Autumn is a perfect time to plant bulbs that will provide a crucial nectar and pollen source for pollinators as they emerge from hibernation. The first spring butterflies to emerge, such as Brimstone and Orange-tip, love plants including crocuses and English bluebells.
www.jimmysfarm.com
Woodland 2021.indd 44
7. Dig in
It’s also a good time to plant trees and hedges that will provide more food and shelter. Good choices are hawthorn, blackthorn and holly; the common hawthorn, Cataegus Monogyna, will provide fragrant flowers for pollinators as well as tasty red berries in the autumn for birds.
8. Harvest seeds
This is a great, cheap way of increasing the number of plants you have in your garden, and you can share and swap with family and friends to make sure you cater for as many different types of butterflies and moths as possible.
9. Keep the nettles
They might give a nasty sting, but nettles are vital to butterflies including the Small Tortoiseshell, so leave a patch in a sun-blessed corner of your garden. They don’t need to be trimmed back during the autumn as they will die off during the colder months.
10. Volunteer
Butterfly Conservation relies on the support of thousands of volunteers who run over 500 conservation work parties a year, 1,000 guided walks and talks, and help to manage conservation work on over 30 reserves (1,960 acres of land), including major habitat restoration projects. Why not get involved – you can make a difference?

Recommended by vets, we formulate these specific recipes to meet the needs of many different species using natural ingredients for a tasty, balanced diet. In fact, Science Selective is so successful, last year we were proud for it to be crowned ‘Small Animal Product of the Year’. Our Selective Naturals treats are also very popular. They don’t
contain any added sugar and have natural ingredients such as ground Timothy hay, locust beans and dried cranberries. Handfeeding is a huge part of the bonding process with small pets, and we make sure that all our treats are healthy as well as delicious. How did the partnership with Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park come about and what does it involve? We were absolutely delighted to be able to provide half a ton of free food for the small furries at Jimmy’s Farm. We are based in the same area of Suffolk, and we are committed to sourcing our ingredients locally wherever possible. We are passionate about community and sustainability (all our packaging is recyclable) and it just made sense to support our neighbours who share the same standards of animal welfare as we do at Supreme. We were, of course, over the moon to hear that our food was a hit with the smaller creatures, with reports of good body condition and shiny coats!

Which animals are you providing meals for? Jimmy’s Farm provides fantastic care for an amazing variety of animals, and we’re pleased to give our specialist diets to help some of these creatures keep happy and healthy. We’ll be providing food for the smaller residents of the farm whose dietary needs can be very different to that of their larger animal friends. We have food ranges for an array of small pets, so we’re confident that we’ll be able to cater for any small creature who will benefit from our diets. Are there any unusual diets you’ll be catering for? The dinner queue apparently contained some unexpected characters! As well as three giant continental rabbits, eight guinea pigs and three ferrets, their more exotic cousins, the coati, raccoons, meerkats and skunks also enjoyed tucking in! Our ferret diet was chosen for them as the nutrients in it will meet their dietary requirements. www.jimmysfarm.com

5 things you may not know about pet food...
1
What we may traditionally see as suitable food for small pets may actually be quite unhealthy in large quantities. Carrots, for example, are high in sugar and should only be fed occasionally as a treat.
2
Rabbits eat their own poop! Yes, you read that right. Unlike most other animals, rabbits need to digest their food twice in order to obtain maximum nutrition from their diet. Rabbits should eat the caecotrophs (as they are technically known) straight from their bottom. It may sound weird but it’s actually a fascinating quirk of their digestive system.
www.jimmysfarm.com
Partners 2021.indd 50
3
You may have observed hamsters stuffing food into their cheek pouches, but the reason why they hoard food is very interesting. These little creatures have evolved from quite harsh environments where food would have been scarce. They may be living the life of luxury now with you at home, but that doesn’t stop their instincts from telling them to hoard food away in case there isn’t any left later!
4
5
Complete pet food mixes are, of course, a vital part of a small animal’s diet, but good quality hay – and lots of it – is also necessary for the survival of many small pets. Chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits (and many other animals) will eat hay as the main component of their diet and will spend most of their time nibbling on it.
supremepetfoods.com
Please don’t assume that what is a tasty treat for you will be as welcomed by your pet. Chocolate, for example, is high in theobromine, which is poisonous to many animals including guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs.

F
ound in our bushes and hedgerows between June and November, British berries are always a delicious and nutritious choice, whether you grow your own, pick your own, or buy from the shops. The Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION), a leading, independent education provider which runs a BSc (Hons) Nutritional Therapy in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, shares five important health benefits of blackberries, as well as suggestions for including them in your diet.
Anthocyanins
Blackberries are a great source of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid responsible for the beautiful, deep purple colour of blackberries, which have been linked to various health benefits. In one study of 2,000 healthy women, it was found that those who consumed the highest levels of anthocyanins were less likely to suffer from chronic inflammation (source: Journal of Nutrition).
The potential benefits of blackberries are also recorded in history. “Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, is credited with praising their effects on inflammation and mucous membranes,” says Maria Griffiths, a nutritional therapist and fellow at ION.
Vitamin C
Blackberries are a great source of vitamin C, which plays an important role in supporting immune health. A 100g serving of blackberries provides 35 per cent of an individual’s recommended daily intake of vitamin C, and they are delicious served on healthy breakfast cereals or in a fruit smoothie. Taken straight off the branch and eaten immediately increases not only vitamin C levels, but also ensures that the nutrients and enzymes present are at their highest levels.
Vitamin A
As well as vitamin C, blackberries are a good source of vitamin A. This important vitamin helps to
support the immune system, helps to keep skin and the lining of some parts of the body (such as the nose) healthy, and supports the maintenance of vision.
Fibre
For those lacking fibre in their diet, blackberries are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fibre, which can help to support digestive health. Insoluble fibre is important in stimulating gut function, whereas soluble fibre helps to nourish good gut flora. Blackberries are also lower in natural sugars than other types of fruit, so will have less of an impact on blood sugar levels.
Manganese
Blackberries contain the mineral manganese, which plays an important role in brain function. It is also vital to healthy bone development and a healthy immune system. Just one handful of these delicious berries can provide half an adult’s recommended daily intake.
How to incorporate more blackberries into your diet Remember that just 10 blackberries count as one of your five-a-day, and these purple gems can be used for much more than just desserts. - Blend in a smoothie with other berries such as raspberries and blueberries - Add to a fruit salad with plain yoghurt - Chop and add to tomatoes and basil on a bruschetta - Mix with salad leaves and goat’s cheese - Serve with Parma ham and melon - Blend with yoghurt and milk or just yoghurt and ice cubes to make a refreshing drink
“A final word of caution,” says Maria. “Blackberries contain salicylates, a naturallyoccurring chemical that is similar to aspirin. If taking aspirin causes a problem, then blackberries may not be suitable for you.” ION believes in a personalised approach to nutrition and it’s important to bear in mind that blackberries may not be suitable for everyone. If concerned, it is recommended to seek advice from a registered nutritional therapist or GP. www.ion.ac.uk

Bramble, the prickly shrub where blackberries, raspberries and dewberries grow, is one of the most important food sources for wildlife in the UK – 150 invertebrate species rely on it.
Evidence of blackberry consumption can be traced as far back as the Iron Age, about 2,500 years ago.
IN NUMBERS
375 There are around 375 species of blackberry, which are found in almost all parts of the world.

Do Something amazing, make a difference, be a volunteer Home-Start in Suffolk has been supporting families since 1999 as they navigate through challenges such as mental health, social isolation, poverty, illness, bereavement, family breakdowns and domestic abuse. In the last year volunteers supported 570 families. As we move out of the pandemic, the need for support is increasing and we need more volunteers to meet that demand. Could you support a local family? Families are referred into the service by professionals such as Health Visitors, Teachers, Midwives, Children’s Centre’s, Social Workers and Specialist services, families can also self-refer themselves for support from our home visiting, telephone or group services. “We have an incredible team of more than 270 volunteers” explains Tara Spence, CEO at Home-Start in Suffolk. “They are all fully trained and provide weekly 1 to 1 support through home-visiting, telephone and virtual support. “Its been a challenging 18 months for everyone and as a service we had a to adapt quickly to ensure families had the support they needed throughout the lockdown period, so we introduced the telephone and virtual support elements which have worked extremely well and will now become an additional element of support we offer to families. Each families support is tailored to their needs and our Family Support staff team will work with the family and other agencies to create a bespoke support package that suits the families schedule.” This summer, Home-Start in Suffolk’s volunteers we recognised for their incredible work and were awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service – the equivalent of an MBE for Voluntary services.
We asked some of Home-Start in Suffolk’s volunteers to share what makes being a volunteer so special. “Deciding to become a Home-Start volunteer was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I can truly say that I have really enjoyed my time as a volunteer and feel privileged to be part of the wonderful charity that is Home-Start.” Monica – Volunteer since 2009 “Who’d have thought, that by giving up a few hours a week of my life, I could make a difference to the life of a struggling parent?” Chris - Volunteer since 2009 “I have shared laughter, tears, sympathy, worries, family stories and experiences but at the end of most visits, I come away hoping that I’ve made a difference! Rebecca volunteer since 2020 “I find being a volunteer for HomeStart really rewarding. It gives me
“The staff team are amazing and have really made me feel valued. They were especially supportive during my recent difficult times. They were so thoughtful and caring so THANK YOU HOMESTART and WELL DONE!” Caroline – Volunteer since 2012 “Home-Start is a selfless charity that really cares about the families it supports alongside its staff and volunteers.” Michelle – Volunteer since 2015 “They whole team are amazing and is clear how much they care. It is great to be part of the team and to know that we are making such a difference to Suffolk families.” Jay – volunteer since 2019
Based on what they have shared with its clear that the volunteers get as much out of the support they give to families. As the families do themselves. Gaining friendships, being part of a team, giving them a sense of purpose and knowing they are making a difference shows that volunteering is so rewarding. With the demand for support from Home-Start growing year on year, and the impact that COVID-19 has had on everyone, it is paramount that the organisation continues to grow and recruit new volunteers so even more families can benefit from the Home-Start support service.
The children of Suffolk are our future. Can you help to give Suffolk a brighter future? Then Home-Start in Suffolk would be delighted to talk to you! To find out more about becoming a volunteer call 01473 621104, email jean@homestartinsuffolk.org or visit www.homestartinsuffolk.org to find out more

MARRIED AT THE JOB! Our very own General Manager, Stevie Sheppard, tied the knot with the amazing and beautiful Becca Early on Saturday 10th July, at his favourite place – Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park! It was a fantastic day full of fun, family and friends… Top 100 places to get married in the world.
Tell us about the proposal; was it expected, discussed or entirely spontaneous? S: The proposal was planned a year in advance, back in 2016 – we had a holiday booked to Disneyland Florida and I thought where better than under the magical castle: the happiest place on earth! I had spoken to Becca’s mother, ready to take Paul, her father, out to ask his permission to do so. I’m very much a traditional kind of man. I was getting myself ready and prepared with the words going round and round in my mind and bang – an hour before, Becca dealt me the news she was pregnant with our first child, Benjamin. I now had even more of a task ahead, to let him know the news and to ask permission! To say I was nervous was an understatement, but after a few silent moments he was quick to give me permission to marry Becca. That conversation turned out to be the easy part; the hard part was www.jimmysfarm.com
Jimmy's Farm Weddings 2021.indd 58
58 10/09/2021 12:40
We d d i ngs months ahead on the day of the proposal. It was 38C heat, Becca’s legs had swollen, she was now seven months’ pregnant, and boy did she not want to move to have a photo at the castle. I asked and asked, and got the evil stare a few times, but eventually she decided to come over to have the photo. I got down on one knee, asked the question and the rest is history.
She helped organise our day, told us when to walk and when to stop – we couldn’t have asked for better and the style of photos just matched the rustic nature of the farm.
When did you start to plan your wedding, was your partner involved in the planning or did you both instinctively know what type of wedding you wanted? B: Jimmy’s Farm was the obvious choice – despite Stevie being the General Manager, it really did encompass everything we wanted from a venue: the stunning grounds, the quirkiness, the animals, and the huge capacity for all of our guests. Our family is simply huge and one of the main reasons we kept on delaying our wedding was because we wanted everyone to be able to join us.
How did you know that your wedding dress was ‘the one’? What about the shoes and accessories? B: I only tried on a handful of dresses, and it was entirely different to the one I had envisioned. The embellished open back was the detail that made it ‘the one’ for me!
Tell us a bit more about your day; was it a big or intimate wedding? S & B: It was big. After having had it cancelled twice due to the pandemic, it wasn’t just a wedding – it was the first time in years family and friends could gather, laugh, dance, and simply hug. How did you choose your venue? S: Jimmy’s Farm is not just a venue; it’s home to me and Becca as we live on site looking after the animals. We didn’t consider anywhere else! Where did you source your suppliers? S & B: We met some of our suppliers through our old jobs, family and then through the Jimmy’s Farm Wedding Fayre a few years ago. This is where we met Alicia, our photographer. Tell us about your photographer… B: Alicia was simply amazing. We had lots of chats about the type of pictures we wanted, and the people key to us we wanted to get photos of.
What was your wedding theme/colour scheme? B: Our theme was sage and blush with a dash of rustic.
What did you do to make your wedding personal to you both? S & B: Definitely, spending some time in the wildlife park. We found one another through our passion for animals, so it felt necessary to make them a part of our special day. Some of the animals we have hand-raised, so they are practically family. We got some great photos from the wildlife park too. What was your most memorable part of the day? S: Seeing Becca walking down the aisle. I’m not a very emotional kind of person, but that got me. B: My dad seeing me in my dress. He had been waiting so long for this moment and when he saw me, he was an emotional wreck. What song did you have as your first dance? Conversations in the Dark – John Legend. Where did you go on honeymoon or what do you plan to do once restrictions are lifted? S & B: We went for a busman’s holiday; a little tour up north seeing friends and other wildlife parks and zoos. We hope to get away once the restrictions are lifted.
59 Jimmy's Farm Weddings 2021.indd 59
What was your favourite wedding purchase? S & B: The band - it’s all about great atmosphere! Do you have any tips for future couples? S & B: Don’t worry, everything works out great. Also, trust your venue – they do it for a living.
