Welcome The sun is high up in the sky, flowers are bursting into bloom and new life is everywhere. Summer is here! One of my favourite things to do is go for a walk with a cup of tea before the park opens, taking in all the sounds and smells and saying good morning to the animals. We have recently welcomed three Eland (antelope) and I walk over the long wooden walkway to see how they’re getting on. They’re in the same green expanse as our Zebra, in the section of the park we call Suffolk Savannah. My girls have been among those enjoying our brand-new adventure play area. I have to admit, I even went down the slide myself. Just to test the quality of course! Image by Red Sky Productions

This year, you can take part in an anniversary trail, which takes you through the farm’s journey, from 2002 to where it is present day. After you have completed, you receive a limited edition badge. We’re releasing five designs throughout the year to mark the occasion.

@jimmysfarmmag @jimmysfarm @jimmysfarmmag @jimmysfarmhq follow Jimmy too: @jimmysfarm

It’s been a welcome sight to see our sausages and bacon return to The Farm Shop. As we celebrate 20 years of Jimmy’s Farm, they remind me of how Michaela and I started out and how tough, but also joyful, it was back then.

I can’t wait to see what these next few months bring. One thing I know for sure, it’s never quiet here at Jimmy’s Farm HQ! We hope you can visit us and Share the Good Life too.

Shopping We’re so pleased to MEAT you… Jimmy’s Farm sausages and bacon are available again! We’re delighted to announce that the long anticipated wait is over! As the pandemic hit, we made the difficult decision to scale back our meat production. This was a really tough time for us as selling sausages is deeply rooted in our history – it’s how we began. Sustainable farming and quality meat and food production is at the heart of

everything we do at Jimmy’s Farm, so we knew we couldn’t bring our sausages and bacon back overnight.

Rare lambs

We’re delighted to say that this year we have had our first pedigree Norfolk Horn lambs with thanks to the Norfolk Horn Society for their help! Breeding these sheep is important as they’re classed as at risk by the Rare Breed Survival Trust.

NORFOLK HORN IN NUMBERS

18

The Norfolk Horn is one of the oldest breeds of sheep in the UK and is thought to have descended from the ancient Saxon black faced sheep. The breed started to decline in popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries when it was replaced by more productive breeds such as the Southdown.

1918

90

By the 20th century the breed was on the verge of extinction with only one flock in existence after the First World War.

Jimmy's Farm News 2022.indd 17

The Norfolk Horn is a medium-sized sheep with adult males weighing 90-95kg and females about 70kg.

17

60

Norfolk Horns were crossed with Southdown rams to produce the Suffolk breed, one of the most frequently used breeds in modern sheep farming. There are over 60 different breeds of sheep in Britain – more than in any country in the world.

2500

There are now around 2500 pedigree Norfolk Horns in 79 flocks across the UK, with many of these still concentrated in Norfolk and Suffolk. www.jimmysfarm.com

Jimmy means bees-ness! Jimmy has been giving his top tips as the new Conservation Expert for Rowse Honey, as part of its Hives for Lives programme.

Jimmy Doherty has been working with Rowse Honey at Blenheim Palace Estate in Oxfordshire to form the perfect plan to protect pollinators. Building homes… expanding businesses… exploring the limits of transport… Our man-made world is encroaching on natural habitats at an alarming rate. So much so that almost all (97%) of our nectar-rich wildflower meadows* and over half (52%) of our natural hedgerows** in the UK have disappeared over the past century.

This drastic habitat loss is impacting British pollinators. Did you know there are over 1,500 species of insect pollinators in the UK? Without enough beautiful blooms spanning a variety of colours, sizes, and heights, our pollinators struggle to survive. And without these pollinators, we’d struggle to thrive, too.

That’s why Rowse Honey has been working to protect bees, beekeepers, and other pollinators through its Hives for Lives programme of vital initiatives for over 10 years. And this year, the brand is adding a fourth pillar to the programme called ‘Feed the Bees’ which aims to do exactly as it says.

Our diets are full of fruits, vegetables and nuts that are dependent on pollination. Even meat and dairy products benefit from pollination, as cattle sometimes eat insect-pollinated plants, such as clover. Without proper plant pollination, we might have more misshapen, bland crops, or worse still, none at all!

As part of the Feed the Bees project, Rowse is helping to create over 50 acres of native, nectar-rich wildflower meadow and 124 miles of hedgerows at the Blenheim Palace Estate. And this is just the first step in what will be a massive five-year conservation project together.

Did you know? Jimmy Doherty is a patron for the British Beekeepers Association and highlighted the plight of these incredible insects in his Channel 4 documentary in 2020, Jimmy’s Big Bee Rescue

We have welcomed a colony of 15,000 honeybees to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park for our new conservation programme, delivered by our friends at The Bee Centre

Top Tips There are things you can do at home to protect our all-important pollinators, too. Here are five top ways to help from Jimmy: 1. Plant nectar-rich flowers in your borders, pots, and window boxes

Peonies, lavender, asters, and dahlias are all great examples of plants that look beautiful in bloom and provide plenty of nourishing nectar for pollinators. If you don’t have a garden, you can plant pollinator-friendly plants in pots on a balcony, or even in hanging baskets and window boxes, too.

www.rowsehoney.co.uk

2. Let a section of your garden grow wild

Pollinators love variety – plants of different heights, shapes and sizes provide an abundance of interesting nectar sources for insects that forage up to 20km a day for nectar. So, scattering some wildflower seeds in your rewilded area gives pollinators plenty of choice. Letting weeds grow can also be hugely beneficial for pollinators. White clover, ivy, and dandelions are particularly popular.

3. Reduce your use of harmful chemicals in the garden Pesticides and insecticides can do more damage than good – they may help to keep pests at bay, but they

can also harm bees, butterflies, beetles, and other pollinators. Try using deterrent plants instead! Lavender plants can deter caterpillars, petunias ward off aphids, and onions can even see slugs on their way.

pollinator palace from scratch using some wood, hollow stems or bamboo canes, and a few nails!

4. Give weary pollinators a place to rest

There’s so much to learn about the colourful world of pollinators, and it’s our duty to pass this knowledge on to curious friends and family. There’s a hive of useful resources online and on social media these days, so set aside some time to ask and answer some of your burning questions about the fascinating world of pollinators.

Not all pollinators live in managed hives like the honey bee – plenty of them fly solo! For pollinators without a permanent home, creating a safe space for them to rest can improve their chances of survival. Why not buy a bee hotel or even build your own

29 JF Bee's 2022.indd 29

From feeding humpback whales and orca in Norway to running 140km solo in the Finnish Arctic Circle, adventurer, explorer and wildlife biologist Lizzie Daly talks exclusively about her epic endeavours – and Photography by Tom Campbell encourages girls to follow their dreams. Looking back at your childhood, what are your memories of wildlife, nature and being outdoors? Have you always possessed an adventurer’s spirit? When I was younger, I vividly remember going on wild camping holidays with my family. We have always loved the outdoors and my parents would give my sister and I our own mini-backpacks as we train-hopped and searched for wilderness areas across Europe to call home for the night. Some of my

favourite memories were sleeping under the stars, having barrels of food sniffed at by wild boars in the middle of the night and navigating through beautiful gorges by kayak. I believe this upbringing instilled a real sense of purpose in me and gave me a different perspective on our world from a young age. I’m also lucky to have had the Welsh coastline on my doorstep growing up, which has been really important for instilling a love for the ocean in me.

“Don’t let any barriers prevent you from doing what you want to do... this is your life, and it’s up to you to decide what things are worth fighting for.” Did you always dream of becoming an adventurer, explorer and wildlife biologist and what was your first big TV career break? I did, even before really knowing that those roles were real jobs. I’ve always been quite driven and ambitious, and the idea of studying wildlife and having a career in the wildlife adventure space was a must for me at an early age. My parents always talk about the time I turned to them at just six years old and stated that I would go on to study elephants. Not that I would like to, but that I would. It’s a really humbling feeling to be doing that now as part of my PhD. My first career break was for CBBC. One of my wildlife videos was spotted on YouTube and I was approached to be part of a series called ‘The Let's Go Club’. Kids TV is really fun to work on. Better still, I was able to contribute some of my passions into the featured segments which was really exciting and inspiring for me. A film crew of 25 and 20 shouting kids, I thrived off the energy. Let’s just say I felt like the luckiest girl alive!

You’ve made numerous wildlife films and documentaries all over the world – which proved the most challenging and did one location/subject impact you more than any other in terms of the wonder of nature? Different projects have impacted me in completely different ways. In 2018, I began making my own film about the impact of the salmon farming industry and it sparked the inner conservationist in me, showing me how impact productions can really make a difference. In terms of logistics, I would say trying to film anything in the icy conditions of the Arctic brings challenges. However, the extreme cold, dying batteries and limited light has proven a challenge I’m well up for! I filmed feeding humpback whales and orca in Northern Norway gorging on the spring spawning herring that come into shore over winter. November is a spectacular time where dark inky seas are met with snow-capped mountains and coated in an orange glow for the whole four hours of daylight. These challenging conditions are totally worth it when a humpback whale decides to use your boat to

33 Lizzie Daly 2022.indd 33

corral the herring and feed right against your boat. I can officially say, I know exactly what herring and whale snot smells and feels like. Most recently your assignments have also included running 140km solo in the Finnish Arctic Circle and leading blue shark trips in the Celtic Deep – is there anything you haven’t done yet that would be on your bucket list? I’m really fascinated with our changing seas and oceans. Stories from the deep sea and lesser known parts of the ocean are a world that I’m drawn to, so I would love to do some deep sea exploration on a submersible or research expedition such as Nautilus. www.jimmysfarm.com

I would love to amplify the relationship between indigenous communities and wildlife more through natural history storytelling. There is so much we can learn from indigenous wisdom when it comes to principles of conservation and living sustainably. In parts of the world most affected by the climate crisis (largely the global south), such as in the Amazon rainforest, you can find communities which are doing extraordinary things for our planet. I would love to help bring those voices to life. You’re keen to inspire females in the wildlife adventure field – what would be your advice to young girls who might have similar dreams and aspirations to yours? Don’t let any barriers prevent you from doing what you want to do. Surround yourself with inspiring women and others who support you. Believe in yourself and believe that what you do matters. Strive to create the networks that empower you and challenge you positively. Be open and outspoken about the challenges that you face to help others find better ways to support you. Not everyone will be able to see things from a new perspective, especially in the face of adversity, but ultimately, this is your life, and it’s up to you to decide what things are worth fighting for.

You’re an ambassador for the Marine Conservation Society, the Jane Goodall Institute UK and the first ever female patron of ORCA – what are you trying to bring to these roles on a personal level. In my heart, I’m a conservationist and if I am being completely candid, I often feel like I’m not doing enough. Working on such big projects can take time – months or years. Time in the fight for our planet is a luxury. The weight of what I’ve seen first-hand while filming in the field fills me with a lot of anxiety and worry. Supporting and amplifying conservation organisations that are doing tangible work both in terms of changing legislation and getting hands-on with conservation work, therefore, is a great way to be part of the solution and to also spread the word about their work. As a conservationist with a fierce passion to care for our oceans and protect our wild spaces, what would you like your legacy to be? I want to be part of the generation that creates the paradigm shift. I want to be part of moving humanity toward a better understanding of not only how to live within our planet's natural boundaries, but to give the planet back to nature.

What exciting projects do you have coming up for the rest of 2022? I can’t share too much, but later this year I can’t wait to share a one-off documentary on the bearded vulture in the Pyrenees following the story of the bounce-back of this species, pushed almost to extinction due to persecution. I will be filming for BBC’s The One Show, producing/hosting in the next series of WMW [Weather Man Walking] on BBC and have a few other exciting projects in the pipeline.

You must be incredibly busy – how do you like to spend your spare time? Honestly? I am happiest when out in

35 Lizzie Daly 2022.indd 35

nature; when I’m feeling low, I’m out in nature… you get the gist. I also love trail running, when I’m home I spend time with friends and family whom I very close with. This year I am upskilling, so I’m also doing a lot more diving and climbing. Music is also a big love of mine. When I was younger, I played to Grade 8 piano and although I no longer play (I know, what a waste) I still love listening to music and finding new artists.

Outd o o rs Following the last two years, which have seen millions more walkers take to the countryside to explore Britain’s natural beauty, the Ramblers’ ‘Let’s Walk Together’ campaign aims to encourage people to pledge a certain number of miles that they will walk in 2022. Fronted by our very own Jimmy Doherty, the initiative will highlight the Ramblers’ mission to improve the nation’s health and spirit through walking. It will emphasise that even a short stroll is every bit as important as a five-mile hike. Jimmy says: “I think it's important that we celebrate our countryside, and joining the Ramblers is a great way of doing that. Going through the countryside, through the highways and byways, the tracks and trails, walking along the rivers, are all a great way to engage with our natural environment.

“Also, the importance of outside activity has been really heightened since the pandemic. Not everyone wants to go to the gym, or fork out for expensive exercise bikes. Simply going for a walk is really good exercise and taking a break from the normality of life is key.” As well encouraging more people to get walking, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the Ramblers’ work which often goes unrecognised. With its members’ support, the Ramblers helps protect walking access rights and maintains paths to prevent them being blocked or becoming overgrown. It provides advice to walkers, and helps individuals overcome more personal obstacles, like a lack of confidence to explore or knowledge of where they can walk, because the Ramblers is committed to removing all barriers to walking.

37 Ramblers 2022.indd 37

Look out for Jimmy and the Ramblers this summer in magazines such as BBC Countryfile, BBC Wildlife, BBC Good Food, Olive, BBC Gardeners’ World and 220 Triathlon. The www.letswalktogether.co.uk website also hosts articles to help walkers get more out of their journeys, along with videos featuring Jimmy talking with the Ramblers about their passion for the countryside. Everyone pledging miles will be entered into a prize draw for a monthly prize of a £100 voucher for hiking gear or a main prize of £1,000 towards a walking holiday. Our amazing 20 years! From rare breed pigs to an A-Z of the animal world, Jimmy’s new book, Tales from Jimmy’s Farm, reflects on the farm’s epic transformation. It’s the 20th anniversary of Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park this year, and Jimmy has written a fabulous new book to celebrate! Tales from Jimmy’s Farm looks back at the journey Jimmy and his family have been on over the last two decades after first setting eyes on the derelict and forgotten Suffolk farm he went on to open as a rare breed pigs farm in 2002. As a boy, Jimmy dreamt of opening a wildlife park and he has worked incredibly hard with his wife, Michaela, and team to make his childhood dream come true. Now home to more than 80 breeds and species, from anteaters to zebra, Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park has come a long way. Taking us on a trip through the seasons, Jimmy reveals the ups and downs of a life immersed in the natural world. He explains how all of us, wherever we live, can benefit ourselves and the planet by embracing the remarkable animals around us.

Jimmy says: “Many seasons have passed since I came here, but I can honestly say each and every one, emotionally – and on occasions physically – has left its mark! To witness the changing of the seasons so closely, to understand how they shape both us and the natural world, will always be the ultimate reward.”

Tales from Jimmy’s Farm by Jimmy Doherty publishes 13 October 2022 in hardback, priced £20 (Headline Home).

You will be transported into the landscape, learn of the practical day-to-day jobs on the farm, and fall in love with the animals through stories and funny anecdotes of where they came from, how they settled in, and their impact on Jimmy and his team.

After having to move their wedding date five times due to lockdown, Rosa and Phil Gevaux finally tied the knot with a ceremony in the woods at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park – sealed with an Apache blessing!

XWe x xdx d x xi ngs xxx Tell us about the proposal; was it expected, discussed or entirely spontaneous? Phil: I proposed on the pier at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, whilst visiting Rosa. It felt like the right time and I was very excited, having designed and had the ring made in Hatton Garden. We got coffee to go… and Rosa paid. I waited until we were on the pier, and I wrapped the ring in a $10 bill and said that I had her change. Rosa: It was completely unexpected, and I was so overwhelmed. Phil got quite flustered as I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t let me buy him breakfast and was insisting on giving me $10. What made you choose Jimmy’s Farm for your big day? We had visited Jimmy’s Farm for special events multiple times, and it was one of our ‘ours’ places. Specifically, we love the animal park and it just felt like ‘us’. Really, Teddy the tapir was a big draw – we couldn’t really imagine getting married without him participating somehow. Honestly though, with the prospect of Rosa’s family coming from the States, we wanted to show them the beauty of the Suffolk countryside – and what better place than the beautiful grounds of Jimmy’s Farm? When did you start to plan your wedding? Living nearly 6,000 miles apart, we knew early on in our relationship that marriage was the only way we could truly be together, and we were always happy with that idea. We always knew some things we did and didn’t want on the day, but the pandemic required lots of flexibility. Once we had a date, the wedding was properly planned in about four months. How was planning your wedding during the pandemic? Wedding planning during the pandemic was, equal parts, frustrating and disappointing. We moved the wedding date a total of five times… The registry office rules kept changing, and in the end, we just had to take a risk and luckily it paid off and we are able to have our wedding in-between waves and lockdowns. Sadly, the majority of American guests, including some members of the wedding party just couldn’t make it, but Rosa’s parents and a couple of friends were able to be here, helping make the day special. Tell us about your ceremony – was anything special to you as a couple incorporated? Phil: The ceremony in the woods was something I always wanted. It was made even more special by an Apache blessing by Rosa’s father, Joseph, and a speech by my father, David.

Rosa: To me, creating our own vows and reading them to each other was really important. I walked down the aisle with both parents accompanying me, and a ridiculously long veil allowing me to live out my Disney princess dreams. How was your wedding breakfast? All the food on the day was incredible. While getting ready, the bridal party enjoyed incredible pastries and sausage rolls in the Hay Barn. They were legitimately the biggest sausage rolls we’d ever seen and tasted amazing. After the ceremony, guests had a champagne toast and canapes. Our wedding breakfast was a three-course meal held in the restaurant at Jimmy’s Farm. The catering was incredible, and the service staff went above and beyond. We had several food allergies amongst the guests, and they were accommodated so well… To us, the food and the music were two of the most important things, and having visited the farm before, we knew we would be getting a fantastic meal. What did you do to make your wedding personal to you both? Our wedding was about us, our families, and building our community. We themed the tables in the restaurant www.jimmysfarm.com

after our favourite movies and shows, giving each a fantasy location that we both loved… We had a table showcasing the wedding photos of each set of grandparents and parents, and some childhood photos, making sure our histories and lineage were well represented and honoured on the day.

Our evening reception was in the tent, and it was lovely to be surrounded by the lush herb garden, the outdoor firepit, and wind rushing across the fields. Our evening entertainment was supplied by Si Cranstoun and his band, and they did an incredible job. Everyone was dancing and it was an amazing party.

What was your most memorable part of the day? Phil: The woodland ceremony for me. Seeing Rosa walk through the trees towards me.

Where did you go on honeymoon or what do you plan to do? We are still waiting for the right time for our honeymoon, as the world is still waking up. We are planning on Italy, hopefully, as since watching Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy, we have become obsessed with pasta and cheese, or perhaps a return to Nice, in the south of France, where we had our first date in 2015.

Rosa: The most memorable part of the day was directly after the ceremony, walking down the hill out of the woods. We were covered in flowers, hand in hand, laughing, smiling, relieved that everything had gone so well, and that we finally, after years of waiting, had had our wedding. I felt so happy at that moment, and while we were followed by the whole of the wedding party and guests, it felt like we were the only people in the whole farm park. Where did you have your evening reception and what entertainment did you have? Over the course of the day, we had incredible magic performed for us by Nick Brown, and Holly Sarah Radford beautifully sang Rosa down the aisle.

What was your favourite wedding purchase? We both feel that the rings are our favourite. Vince at The Wedding Ring Workshop on Hatton Garden was awesome. Do you have any tips for future couples? Remember, it’s YOUR wedding. Be honest about what each of you want and what makes you both happy. It can be so easy to get caught up in all of the ideas and the planning, you can forget that it’s supposed to be fun.

10 years of Suffolk Libraries

Did you know that the organisation which runs Suffolk’s library service is a charity?

Suffolk Libraries will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer. On top of traditional library services, Suffolk Libraries does so much more for the community. Here are 10 things you might not know:

1

Suffolk Libraries is the only library service with its own mental health and wellbeing service, providing information, support and drop-in groups in partnership with other specialist organisations.

2

Suffolk Libraries’ perinatal programme, 'Me Myself and Baby' helps mums-to-be and new parents with support, counselling and stay and play sessions in libraries.

3

6

If you’ve an under-five in your family, why not bring them along to the fun, weekly pre-school Wordplay sessions which can help young children with bonding, communication, literacy and social skills?

4

Since the start of the first lockdown, Suffolk Libraries has made around 11,000 lifeline calls to those who are isolated and living alone. This service still runs as the Phone a Friend service.

If you know anyone over 55 who is need of companionship or something to do, library Top Time sessions are a great way of preventing loneliness and keeping your body and mind active.

5

Through the Pride and Periods service, many libraries provide free items for anyone experiencing period poverty.

7

If you’re looking for help with claiming benefits, looking for a job or developing digital skills, you can speak to library staff or get help at www.suffolklibraries.co.uk

8

Suffolk Libraries has kept all 44 libraries open as well as the mobile library service and two pop-up libraries.

9

The Suffolk Libraries website provides plenty of advice and resources

49 Libraries.indd 49

for parents about literacy, recommended reading lists and getting ready for school. You can search and reserve books online and pick them up from your nearest library.

10

Suffolk Libraries is a charity and the support of individuals and businesses, whether through volunteering or donations, is vital. If you fancy a challenge and like the great outdoors, why not jump on your bike and take up one of our 15 spaces in the London to Brighton Cycle Ride in September and help raise funds to support all the amazing things listed above? Mow know-how! We catch up with our friends at Stiga, which has kindly donated animal-friendly gardening equipment to Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park.

Tell us a bit about the history of Stiga and the garden equipment and products you offer… Stiga was founded in Sweden in 1934, and for the first 24 years focused on the manufacture of table tennis and other garden games. In 1958, they expanded into garden machinery and the first lawnmower was produced. The Stiga group was founded in 2000 when four established European lawnmower businesses merged: Stiga, Mountfield, Alpina and Castelgarden. Together, these brands share over 90 years of history and expertise in the field. The Atco brand joined the group in 2011. With headquarters in Italy and European and worldwide factories, Stiga supplies lawn and garden equipment to over 70 countries. In the UK, Stiga’s extensive range of front mowers, tractors, lawnmowers, robots and handheld products are distributed via a network of over 600 specialist dealers, partners and retailers. You recently donated equipment to the gardening team at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park – how did that come about? We were introduced via Upson Mowers, a local authorised Stiga dealer who had for a number of years been repairing the older equipment at Jimmy’s Farm. Their existing range of garden machinery became less reliable and less desirable over time. Stiga, as an innovative company, prides itself at being at the forefront of garden machinery technology that is constantly evolving. Machines and tools that prioritise safety and ergonomics as well as being environmentally-friendly, delivering excellent performance and maximum user comfort. What did it involve and why did you want to help? We visited and were able to match a range of machines best

suited to the farm’s individual needs; a Stiga Park for grass cutting, along with a range of battery handheld products to ensure a quieter and more peaceful experience for the machine operators, visitors and animals alike. Supported by Upson Mowers, who delivered the products, provided product training and ongoing maintenance, these items were supplied to Jimmy’s Farm free of charge. We share Jimmy’s passion for wildlife and the British countryside. Stiga products are designed to aid the enjoyment of completing whichever gardening task is needed, sympathetically and efficiently to the environment, allowing us all to enjoy our outside spaces with family and friends. What’s hot in the world of lawnmowers – are robot motors the future? There is a big shift to battery power as more and more people look for a greener alternative. New battery technology and innovation has shown that many categories from garden tractors, lawn mowers and hand tools are now very much contenders when compared to petrol. Stiga currently has the largest range of battery ride-ons within the UK. Robot mowers can be the ideal choice for anyone who doesn’t want to mow the lawn; these are not new and have been in the market since the 1990s. The developments in battery life and GPS mapping technology has made these more suitable for more households over the past few years. The UK has been slower than other European countries to buy into this technology; every third lawn mower sold in Sweden is now a robot mower. We tend to have separated lawns, which adds a level of complexity to the installation process. Prices range from under £1,000 to over £5,000 for machines capable of managing up to 5000sqm.

5 things you may not know about gardening… 1. Check before you strim – look for evidence of hedgehogs which may be sleeping or hiding out in the hedges or undergrowth 2. Did you know different plants prefer different types of soil? Depending on where you live, your soil’s pH level will lie between highly acidic 3.5 to very alkaline or neutral 7. To know what pH soil you have, you can buy a testing kit from a local garden centre. 3. Did you know there is a Giant Veg community? The current record for the world’s heaviest beetroot is 23.95kg. 4. Plants get hungry too – the three major macro-nutrients growing plants need are N (nitrogen), P (phosphorus), and K (potassium), while micro-nutrients such as calcium, iron and boron are essential for developing flowers and fruits. 5. Gardening is good for your mental health – it has been shown to reduce stress and improve your mood as well as providing good exercise and that all important Vitamin D boost

Top Summer Mowing Tips

Dependent on the weather, you may need to mow the lawn twice a week. During periods of dry weather, water the lawn thoroughly and infrequently. Continue to apply weed killer to the lawn, if and when necessary, and lightly scarify if thatch continues to be a problem.

July

Continue to mow the grass frequently according to growth, but try to avoid ‘cropping’ the grass. Water thoroughly if rainfall is low. If your lawn is looking weak and thin, then apply a light dressing of fertiliser but ensure that the nutrient ratios of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium are low.

August

Keep on mowing regularly at a low cutting height and water during periods of dry weather; this is best done in the evening or early morning. This allows the water to sink into the lawn rather than evaporate. If your lawn is relatively uneven, you may consider applying a light top-dressing at this time.

September

As autumn approaches, this is a busy time for lawn maintenance. You will need to continue to mow the lawn according to growth. Raise mower blades gradually toward your winter cutting height to allow the grass to thicken and protect the roots from winter frost and snow. September is the best month to treat moss and this can be done with lawn sand; once the moss is dead, remove it from the lawn with a spring tine rake. The weather can still be quite warm, so irrigate the lawn during periods of dry weather. Aerate the lawn towards the end of the month in areas where there has been a heavy footfall or poor drainage.

Summer sizzlers

As the weather warms up, it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy some al fresco dining with these tasty seasonal recipes and top tips from our chef. It’s BBQ season, and many of you will use the opportunity to treat family and friends. Though if you really want to impress, I do have a couple of simple tips. Firstly, rather than pre-seasoned supermarket meat, head to your local butchers. This meat will likely contain less water and more natural fats, which will help it stay moist during the cooking process. If you fancy steak, my favourite on the BBQ is Ribeye, as it has lovely fat marbled through it. Secondly, we’ve all heard horror stories of food poisoning from the BBQ; then we can overcompensate by overcooking, making the food dry. I recommend picking up a digital probe thermometer, allowing you to know exactly when things are cooked. Pork at 71C and chicken at 74C are the most important ones. The butcher should have a selection of pre-seasoned items, but here’s a recipe for a medium spice rub that we use often. Spice Rub 1tbsp crushed fennel seeds 1tbsp crushed cumin seeds 1tbsp crushed coriander seeds 1tbsp cracked black pepper 2tbsp mixed herbs 2tbsp cayenne pepper 2tbsp garlic powder 5tbsp smoked paprika 250g dark soft sugar 125g white sugar 250g table salt

Iced Parfait is a great dessert to have ready for a party, as it can be made in advance on a rainy summer’s day. It may look complicated at first, but it’s actually pretty simple. It’s a good one to do with kids as there’s so much room for their ‘artistic interpretation’ of the flavours. This recipe is for a Nougat Parfait, but the mixed peel, nuts and cherries can be swapped for raspberries and blackberries or whatever you fancy!

Iced Nougat Parfait Ingredients 200ml double cream 150g white chocolate 3tbsp glucose 6 egg yolks 400g cream – ¾ whipped 450g mixed peel, nuts and cherries 6 egg whites 300g sugar Method Line a terrine mould with cling film. Gently warm the cream, with the glucose and the white chocolate. Whisk the yolks over a pan of hot water, until thick, light, and doubled in volume, then add the cream mixture. Cool to room temperature. Fold in the cream, then the mixed peel, nuts and cherries. Whip whites to peaks, slowly add the sugar, then fold into the mix. Gently ladle the mix into the mould and freeze overnight.

Supreme strawberries Strawberries are the classic red, juicy summer fruit. Abundant on supermarket shelves from late May, not only are they packed with flavour but all kinds of health benefits too. Dr Emma Derbyshire, Nutritionist for Love Fresh Berries, looks at these scarlet wonders. They are abundant in vitamin C Strawberries are a particularly good provider of vitamin C. Also known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is renowned for its high antioxidant activity. This means it can help to take the edge off oxidative stress which occurs in the body when exposed to smoke and pollution, as well as being a by-product of the ageing process. They provide an array of minerals Minerals are substances needed for the functioning and metabolism of the human body. Strawberries not only provide vitamins (vitamins C, B6 and B12) but also calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, iron and zinc. There can be slight differences in the amount of

minerals provided depending on the climate, soil quality and the way that strawberries are handled post-harvest. They give us a fibre boost Dietary fibre is found in plant foods and has long been linked to a range of health benefits, including prevention of constipation, colorectal cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that adults (19 to 64 years) are eating about 20 grams daily when we should be striving for 30 grams daily. Strawberries provide about 1.3 to 2.2 grams of fibre per 100 grams eaten. A standard and large strawberry punnet are usually around 230 and 400 grams, respectively.

They contain polyphenols Polyphenols are plant compounds that give berries their vibrant red colour. Not only do polyphenols help fruit to look appetising, they also aid health as they have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-vital properties. They are natural Strawberries are not processed. They are one of the tastiest, most natural foods that we can eat – simply picked, washed, and eaten. This means that they retain their power hub of antioxidants.

Summer Crab Tacos Macerating strawberries in lime juice heightens their flavour and, combined with a little fresh chilli, they create a delicious fresh salsa on top of crab tacos. Serves 4 Prep time 15 minutes Cook time 2-3 minutes Ingredients 8 taco shells 300g fresh crab meat (see tip) zest from 1 lime 2 little gem hearts or other firm lettuce, shredded 2 avocado, peeled, stoned and sliced handful torn coriander 150g soured cream (optional) For the strawberries 200g strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped juice of ½ lime 1 green chilli, chopped Method 1. To macerate the strawberries, combine the fruit with the lime juice and chilli and set aside for 10 minutes. 2. To make the tacos, warm in the oven for a few minutes following the pack instructions. Combine the crab with the lime zest and some salt and pepper. Fill the shells with lettuce and avocado, top with the crab, strawberries, a scattering of coriander and some soured cream if using. Serve immediately! Top Tip For a veggie version, combine a 400g can of drained chickpeas with the zest of 1 lime. Roughly mash the avocado and mix with the chickpeas and some seasoning. Use in place of the crab. Fresh crab can be expensive; try using a mixture of brown and white to reduce the cost and increase the flavour or you can use canned. www.lovefreshberries.co.uk
