Fast Facts

Thor's Fathe r Odin Odin was the chief god. He was the most powerful god in Asgard. Odin was the grandson of the very first god, Buri. Odin had several children including Thor, the strongest god in Asgard. It is easy to recognize Odin, he is the god with only one eye.

Thor has lived on in our weekly calendar. Thursday (Thor’s Day) was derived from the Norse god’s name.

Odin was willing to go to any length to drink water from Mimir’s Well as it was believed anyone who drank from the well would gain the wisdom of Mimir, the wisest of them all. Nothing could stop his desire for this wisdom so when he was offered a drink of water in return for an eye, he didn’t hesitate. Odin sacrificed an eye and rejoiced as he drank the water of wisdom. That is how he ended up not only being the wisest god in Asgard, but also the one-eyed god.

Thor's Wife Sif Sif was a goddess well known for her lovely hair made from gold. Loki had cut off Sif’s hair as a prank when she was asleep. When Thor discovered what had happened, he was furious and he made Loki promise to get the dwarfs to make new hair for his wife. Loki kept his promise and went to the dwarfs who created gorgeous new hair made from gold. When the golden hair was fastened to Sif’s head, it grew naturally like real hair.

The Nin e Worlds In Norse mythology there are ‘nine worlds’, they are Midgard, world of human experience (earth); Asgard and Vanaheimr, the worlds of the gods; Jötunheimr, the world of the giants; Álfheimr and Svartálfaheim, the worlds of the elves; Muspellheim, the world of fire; Niflheim, the world of those who die from old age or sickness; and the netherworld. All of these worlds sit on the branches of the Yggdrasil, the world tree, a giant tree with Midgard in the centre and Asgard at its top.

g n i h s i F s e o G Thor Thor had many adventures and one of them involved a fishing trip with the giant Hymir. Thor had disguised himself as a young man and asked Hymir if he could accompany him on a fishing trip. Hymir agreed but warned Thor that he could get scared at sea. Thor insisted on coming. When Thor asked about bait, Hymir told Thor to get his own. Thor went out Hymir’s pasture and grabbed a huge black ox, killing it to use the head as bait. As Hymir and Thor rowed out to sea, Hymir wanted to stop, Thor insisted they row even further from land. Finally Thor found a spot and started fishing using the ox head as bait. Almost immediately Thor felt a mighty force pulling fiercely on his fishing line. Thor used all his strength and started to haul in the line. The catch was enormous, none other than the Midgard Serpent. By this time Hymir was terrified. The Midgard Serpent was the most dreaded creature to any fisherman. Thor kept pulling, the serpent roared and waters of the ocean foamed. Thor was now back to being the thunder god and had grown in size and strength. Hymir, now scared out of his wits, grabbed his knife and cut Thor’s fishing line. The Midgard Serpent sank back into the ocean, very much alive.
