DATE: September - November 2012 SUPERVISOR: Andy Earl, Karolina Szynalska PROJECT SCOPE: Architecture LOCATION: Brayford Pool, Lincoln, UK This project introduces a specific kind of approach involving the intricate study of the production industry. It is located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, close to the residential area and university. For this project, I worked with a chocolatier, understanding how homemade chocolate are made and the basic requirements in terms of space and style the client needs. With this project I experimented with the product to induce results for an innovative facade, which is designed in order to intrigue and attract visitors to the cafe. The design allows users to appreciate the product in a unique sense broadening their perspective on the merging of a product and a building’s design, without the clichés.

Arboretum Park SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PROJECT: MASTERPLAN
JING ZHI TAN
DATE: Janurary - March 2013 TUTORS: Amira Elnokaly, Andy Earl PROJECT SCOPE: Masterplanning LOCATION: Lincoln, United Kingdom The sustainable design project involved working on the project in different scales, in specific being a masterplan and a small project. The project takes place in the Arboretum park of Lincoln. A group of 8 of us redesigned what used to be a vast, passive green space into a more vibrant area for families to spend time in. The masterplan consists of eight small structures, which are proposed to activate the park and provide interesting aspects to attract visitors. We also strived to provide ease of access, giving special attention to our design, making sure it is user friendly, even for disabled users.

KEY STRATEGIES: Improve visibility and safety of the park during the night Improve accessibility
The routes proposed are mainly of zig zag shape, mainly in the direction of east - weat to ease the problem of steepness. Despite the disadvantages, the slope also provides opportunities. Some function such as the amphitheatre requires a sloping site. In addition, the view towards the Lincoln city is stunning thanks to the slope.
ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
The site is in summary a steep slope facing south. The gradient is approximately 1:5, which is not suitable for disabled to access.

Introducing New Perspectives SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PROJECT: SMALL BUILDING
JING ZHI TAN
DATE: Janurary - March 2013 TUTORS: Amira Elnokaly, Andy Earl PROJECT SCOPE: Small Scale Building LOCATION: Lincoln, United Kingdom
Utilising the structures, similar to the function of a gutter by collecting rainwater. It is then integrated with the underground rainwater harvesting system developed during the masterplan stage underneath the pathways.
There is still potential yet to be discovered and implemented on this tower in terms of a lift for disabled visitors.
ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
Key Design Strategies
The structure is designed to be lightweight and sculpture-like in order to ensure minimum amount of intervention to the nature as possible, whilst strong enough to handle the weight of the viewing platforms. The sculpture hugs and surrounds the staircases which leads up to the platforms in different levels.
2012-2016
Amongst the eight small structure, my project of interest is the outlook tower. Utilising the slope of the site. The concept was driven by the different viewpoint best proposed for visitors so to be able to have the best experience with the wonderous scenery. The exploration of the concept started with each perspective plotted as a point in a 2D graph, then by "connecting the dots" three dimensional triangles are produced, inducing the shape of the sculpture.

The site was chos en b as e d on t he f uture development prepared by the council. The council has planned a railway development strategy for March, leading the research in the direction of the history of railway in March.
2012-2016
Distance between Spalding and March is of 45 miles, which is large area to be developed at the same time, thus the proposal was to divide the developemtn into three different phases, where this project focuses on phase one development.
Throug h t he analysis, it is found t hat in comparison to the past, March today has much less connection in terms of regional public transportations, leading to many depending on private owned vehicle rather than public transport. In conclusion, this project seeks to reconnect the surrounding cities and rejuvenate the site back to its once glorious days.

Placed around the cycle park, the observation towers serve to heighten the visitors' perspective. Where each of the tower is placed, real time data is sent to the Visitor Center (Detail Design) for analysis and for the exhibition viewing. The unique feature is in that the main building acts as the starting point to the cycle park, so users can understand the cycle route through the data sent.

TOP Material Strategy: The idea is to depict the contrast between nature and technology by using both natural and man made materials. Hence, for thie project, I have used mainly timber and concrete. In the interior, most of the timber cladding are used on the ceiling, whilst fully utilised on the exterior. Concrete on the other hand is used mostly in the interior, signifying the concept of man being surrounded by nature.

CAFE RENOVATION PROJECT
DATE: September - November 2015 SUPERVISOR: Kai Liu, Xia Jin PROJECT SCOPE: Architecture, Interior, Landscape LOCATION: Taiyuan, China ConXrete Coffee is a new western cuisine coffeehouse and restaurant in Taiyuan, Shanxi in an eclectic industrial environment. Renovated form an 80's era plastic factory building, our design scope spans on multiple scales spanning from masterplan and landscape, to architecture, interior, furniture design and lighting fixture.

The project's concrete industrial aesthetic and the concept of X are derived from the existing building's concrete structure as well as the new concrete casting as the main design element tying the disparate space together. The letter X is not only the main feature in the project's brand identity, but also the overall conceptual underpinning as an unknown quantity, and as part of the english prefix "ex" to inspire adjectives such as "exciting", "exquisite", "extreme" in the spatial design.

DATE: December 2015 SUPERVISOR: Kai Liu PROJECT SCOPE: Architecture, Interior Architecture LOCATION: Chongqing, China
During the process of Miao Er Shi Exhibition Center, I was in charge of developing a concept and producing the final presentation. This project deals with the renovation of an old boiler building from back in the late 80s. Within the project, the multipurpose space is the main design feature, providing a space for the client to hold different types of events. Simply by using four different diagrams, I illustrated the possible situations so the client could quickly understand the program we are proposing. Moreover, with the existing boiler room, there were the leftover functional elements such as the funnels; and instead of demolishing it, I proposed to reuse it as a unique way to exhibit paintings, and when not in used, it could be used as a light tunnel to capture daylight.

Potential reuse of existing building element
Another design feature I have proposed is the reuse of the funnels left from the old boiler room. Utilising the concept of the telescope, I was interested to proposing to integrate the funnels with the exhibitions that would take place in the multipurpose space. When in use, paintings could be viewed from under the funnel, or placed so people can look into the funnel. When not in use, mirrors can take the place of the paintings to direct daylight into the space.

08 Dashilar: Thick Wall BEIJING DESIGN WEEK EXHIBITION DATE: October 2015 SUPERVISOR: Kai Liu PROJECT SCOPE: Interior Architecture, Exhibition LOCATION: Beijing, China The development of Dashilar hutongs has been an episodic process, with a small gathering of architectural and programmatic invention along Yangmeizhu Street. We propose a series of detail oriented interventions to improve the aesthetic quality of existing architecture and streets, while integrating new functional components to improve the quality of life in the interior domestic realm as well as strengthen the community spirit on the exterior. Most residential facades in the Dashilar area have a very clear division between the public and the private domain. The private life takes place behind blind walls with only small window openings closed off with screens completely invisible from the street. At the same time there is a lot of social activity in the public streets. People come out of their private homes to interact, socialize, play cards, eat and drink together. 30
In between the private and the public life we noticed a zone used mostly for storage, bike parking, laundry, house extensions, vegetable gardens and air-condition units; the in between space. This space creates a disconnection between the interior and the exterior space. The in between space is very unorganised and therefore not a very attractive sight. We are interested in revitalising this space by organizing the space and introduce new elements that connect the private life in the house to the public life on the street. The in-between space becomes a transition from interior to exterior space instead of a disconnecting element.

BOTTOM The renders below show experimentation I was doing with the lighting of an interior. Evaluating and looking at how the lighting makes a difference in the quality of the space given, for example, in the left image, a center piece is used to create a warmer ambiance, whilst on the right, track lights are used for better lighting and focus for people working on their desk. LED lights are also installed at the desk.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Growing up in a multicultural background, from kindergarten in Philippines, childhood in Malaysia, adolescent years in Abu Dhabi, majoring in England and finally, professional development back in Abu Dhabi and now Beijing, I have developed an undeniable skill in absorbing any culture I am exposed to. In turn, through the extensive perspective gained, I have come to an understanding of how strongly, though at times unconsciously, we are affected by the culture and quality of space.

PS
In professional practice, I have managed to actively engage in projects of various scales internationally in two respective firms. On one hand, during my experience at Tamouh in Abu Dhabi, I was exposed to larger scaled proposals including boutique mall design, apartment design, master and urban planning. Being on a client design and planning team has pushed for the exponential growth of my communication skills, both within the company and beyond, on top of that continually challenging my design, project management, and team work abilities to overcome the scale of the projects. On the other hand, during my experience at DAMU in Beijing, I have participated in projects of smaller, more detail-oriented scale, and propositions involving association with interior architecture. During the episodic process, in comparison to Tamouh, I follow the projects more closely, handling all stages from conceptual design, to onsite assistance leading to completion. In DAMU, I had the privilege to partake as an onsite assistant on one of the renovation project, providing me with invaluable insights to different types of building treatments and materiality details. As a result, I have acquired a substantial enthusiasm for design with interest in the importance of a project’s context, strengthening my decision to further research and develop cultural and emotional instigating space. The School’s approach has given adequate level of
36
sensitivity to project developments with cultural and historical understandings within a global agenda, concluding my belief that the school can assist me in producing well grounded thesis and proposition, simultaneously drawing on my multicultural background. Moreover, I have observed that the school has dedicated a module specifically to nurture our abilities to critically research and resolve building elements such as material, structural, environmental and tectonic details of our propositions; this will assist me in my desire to improve my technical knowledge, hoping to achieve a level of knowledge that is on a par with my conceptual potential, creating a thesis not only conceptually strong but technically mature. Lastly, I hope to partake in the university’s language course to expand my linguistic knowledge, heightening potential opportunities for my future career. Ultimately, my piquing interest in creating architecture that actively reflects on user experience and contextual heritage worldwide has led to my decision to apply for the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. I look forward to delve deeper on the balance aesthetically and tectonically between designing for people and for the environment, keeping in mind that architecture affects the quality of life and space in daily basis simply by existing.
