GOAL OF DESIGN
The project of design is for decorative wall or decorative wallpaper which will connect with plain wallpaper and laser-cut technique. All of designs can be divided two collections via colours: similar colours for bedroom; contrasting colours for living room. And according to pattern, there will be separated with five groups, each group having one for bedroom and another one for living room. The colour is from natural photography and starry sky. There will be four natural colour group of yellow, gray, green and blue with colourful starry sky which will help to complete the colour with gradient change. Patterns will choice traditional patterns about Buddhism which has inspiration with some plants and animal motif. Plant and animal images are based on some own photography and internet pictures, which will also connect with artists and market research. Texture will be from two types with space and natural objects, adding some texture combined with mono painting in class. Because of using laser-cut, there will be various materials with cutting to be the top level in design. There will be two forms: tactile wallpaper by fabric or colour paper; using laser-cut style for the foreground, making relationship with the background wallpaper by mount board or MDF board. Through the project, I would have a challenge of decorative wallpaper with new style in interior design. According to market research, decorative wallpaper and laser-cut wall is one popular productions in present day, especially in young generation. There are two styles of tactile wallpaper and laser-cut decorative wallpaper which are used for living room behind sofa or bedroom behind bed. Therefore, I would try to deal with the challenge of the new style of wallpaper of two types: tactile wallpaper and laser-cut decorative wallpaper.

Artist research – linda florence
Her wallpaper use gold leaf, leather and other exotic materials, which has a tactile quality. It is damask wallpaper which use luxurious materials of eastern textiles. It uses special decorative paper to be the foreground which has a 3D view. My design will be linked to the damask pattern which creates from plants, cirrus and geometries motif together. And I would like to link to the tactile style. There will be some original clear linking line pattern to be the background on the plain wallpaper, then the foreground will use more than two overlapping layers to obtain the result for 3D feeling by colour paper. 4
Artist research – louise body
Her wallpaper is based on some birds with plants. Its process is hand-printing and hand-finishing, which is undated the classic floral patterned wallpaper for the postmodern homeowner. She used some simple pattern to combine together, which has a gradient with foreground and background with positive and negative pattern. Her design always thought about ideas with display. Having read wallpaper design from Louise Body, I will connect with the patterns of plants and birds with more levels with simple colours. And there is a style of linking to position. I would like to make the foreground from laser-cut objects to have relationship with background wallpaper. 5
Artist research - Susan Bradly
Her works focus on the laser-cut, which is about outdoor wallpaper. These patterns include natural objects of leaves, ferns and birds. And her works have the form of damask and floral motifs like other wallpaper design. She used some special materials including aluminum, stainless and powder coated steel, plywood, acrylic and mirror finish. The most of them are arranged on the wall to fit with decorative objects. I will link to my design with laser-cut style with various materials. The foreground to be the laser-cut objects to decorate the wall with the background wallpaper. 6

Her designs are used the form with collage and embroidery together. The background is in ceramics. It is a unique and exciting way. This is a type to decorate the wall in the house. Her design includes beautiful girls, birds and flowers, used by leather and felt with panels and strings. Her design will be contract the wall or just use a new story to improve the wallpaper. The products design based on the renovation and interpretation of old, unwanted items. Having read from Clare Coles’ works, I would link to this way to describe own works to feel tactile, which can be contracted the background wallpaper. I complete the works with material of fabric to be connected with wallpaper design. This way has independence.7

ď ś This is colour sample from natural photography and starry sky picture. According to the market research of colours from bedroom and living room, bedroom will provide a similar colour blood, and living room will have contrasting colours to ornament the plain room. Therefore, I decide to use similar colours in bedroom, and contrasting colours in living room. There are eight groups for same colour bloods, which are the basic colours for my whole designs. All of them are from the last five pages sample pictures and photography.
The similar colours can be used the one colour blood (the single straight group of the colour sample), and the contrasting colours can pick up two colour blood to make together for a new colour match, such as orange and blue which is a pair of complementary colours.

Colour palette ď ś Contrasting colours for living room This group of colour is for living room, using contrasting colours including complementary colours. According to the market research, some living rooms will have an attractive decoration for attracting people’s attentions, so I combined with obvious contrasting colours for this group design, which will complete the foreground decorations with attractive colours.
ď ś Similar colours for bedroom This group used the similar colours from one colour blood or the same side in the colour wheel for bedroom. From my research, the most of bedrooms have a uniform colour way. I can change many colour way in this design, but all of them are from same colour blood.

ď ś Chinese traditional pattern with snowflake This type of photography is Chinese traditional pattern from Before Christ. These patterns are the decorations or floor tiles in living rooms or corridor. My design is connected with this type of pattern and snowflake together to get a new motif. There will be connected with the next page research of garden windows, adding the factors of snowflake to obtain the idea of design.

Chinese traditional pattern – garden windows (regular pattern) This is original idea of laser-cut design. These various windows are from the Chinese traditional garden, which is used to be screen to separate the living room and hallway or two different type’s rooms. The scenery is the background like a painting, and the window is like a foreground pattern design to decorate the house. My laser-cut design links to the foreground of windows pattern and the wallpaper texture background links to the natural background in the visual research.

For example, lotus means pure and connection. Clouds symbolise auspicious blessing. A pair of fish is represented for a harmonious family. These patterns are lotus and clouds from Buddhism, which is the original pattern to draw damask pattern and some physical object drawings.

Many plants have different symbol in China, such as bamboo, plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and pine tree which means gracious. And the lozenge which is based on ice blocks means pure and quiet. Mdf board
MDF board, as one type of wood, has clear wood pattern with brown yellow, which is suitable for matching many colourful wallpaper with various pattern design. It is used for the foreground of design, connected with the background wallpaper. In my design, I used MDF board for my two final design, which links visual research of window pattern. There are some samples how to use in design. The left pattern is used CAD software to make an example to match wallpaper design. It is the top level to decorate the plain wallpaper which is one component for the whole design. My design will provide same patterns for connecting with the background and background, which will have a coherent vision. The right pictures are the physical photography.

ď ś Fabric Using fabric makes foreground of wallpaper, which is connected with flock wallpaper. In my final design, I used two types of fabric, felt and coated cotton, to cut a physical shape. It is tactile wallpaper which is popular style wallpaper now. ďƒź Felt Plain wallpaper is the basic background in design. Felt pastes on the basic motif to be decoration which is the decorative component behind sofa or bed wall to make these patterns to have tactile quality. Felt also has many different colour, which can be chosen one type to match wallpaper. It is thicker than coated cotton, which has an obvious feeling.
ďƒź Coated cotton Coated cotton is similar with felt ,which is thinner than felt. I choose brown colour fabric paste on my wallpaper design, so it links to the pattern design for the bedroom. This type of coated cotton has straight line on the plain surface, so I have attention to make a regular arrangement. It provides texture to help design to be more interesting.

Colour paper
Colour paper is easy for cutting and creating. Colour paper pastes on the simple design to be the top level, which adds a layer to have tactile quality. This type is like collage which is suitable for decorative wall. It is not have absolute repeat because of hand-making. Using colour paper will have two ways in my design. One of them just has one layer cutting, which is made by laser-cut, pasting on the background wallpaper. It is the decoration to instead of original wallpaper pattern. Anther type is pasting more layerings with the same shape pattern to make 3D tactile feeling. The sample is how to provide in design.

Mount board
Mount board is used for foreground, which just has a thin thickness. And they have different colours to increase choices to match various type and colours’ wallpaper as the same as colour paper. It is fit for decorative wall, if it has a monotonous repeat pattern. It is can display a relational motif to add vision effect. It is not thicker than wood, and not thinner than paper, so it is between them to have a medium level, which is easier for changing and designing. There are some examples for using mount board which has various colours. This type of material is made by laser-cut with different shapes. The snowflake has relationship with wallpaper pattern.

Other material to make exercise
Wallpaper These are recycle wallpaper which will have patterns. I have used sustainable wallpaper for laser-cut to catch ideas, and compared with marketing wallpaper and my own design wallpaper. Sustainable or recycle wallpaper can also made decorations via own design.
Thin wood board I have tried to use the thin wood board to instead of MDF board. And this type of wood board is also used for the foreground of wallpaper design, as a development material. There have two ways of laser cutter for this board – engraving and cut-through, which obtain different results. There is a sample for engraving cutting. The clear layout can provide an obvious pattern in design and can choose which one is the better to be decoration.
Denim Denim has the same function with felt, of which the idea is from flocking wallpaper. The different with felt is that the most of denim is blue, so I make the background of the design for light blue, making the denim to be the foreground. There will have different tactile feeling. And using denim can be applied sustainable or recycle fabric, which connects with future material.
Card board This is about 3mm card board, which is compared with thin wood board and mount board. It does not have colourful decoration by itself, but it can be changed colour or patterns easily. Plastic object can choose suitable wallpaper to match together.

If design would like to taste many colour way, it is a good software for changing colours in a same type and then to choice a good match for using the final illustration.

Repeat pattern
This software is suitable for arrange patterns. It can be suitable for many levels’ motif, which can avoid misplaced pattern when repeating. And it is easy for making many different objects drawing together. Stencil is one technique in repeat software, which stamps texture into the birds to make a colourful object. This way is different with printing in Photoshop, which can display more transformation in colours. And original decorations in texture can ornament birds to be more attractive.

I used a scalpel to cut own drawings to be geometry elements. There are two ways in this exercise. First, using a new paper on the drawing, I would cut geometries or patterns to show drawing paper, then the whole design will have negative and positive space. Second, cutting drawings to be many parts, and recomplete the elements to be a new pattern. These are good for applying texture background with different taste.

I have had drawing with music in class, which is a good way for inspiration drawing. Listening to various music can provide some inspiration of design. Rhythm can affect people’s mood, which can be also improve drawing. There will be different imaginations with soft or quick music.

Stamp drawing or stencil, it is completed with different tools which stamps on paper to make pattern. I have finished them with geometric laser-cut wood, rolling paper, painting knives and cotton swab. Using various tools makes different texture patterns with discretionary arrangement, choosing better one for my design.

Soft paste and colour pencil are suitable for making texture with gradient colours. The difference with watercolours is that it has a wispier change. It can be linked to starry sky, the visual research, to be texture background. On the other hand, watercolour is simple to making texture with gradient colour. Texture has rhythm sensation by watercolour drawing. The most of them have a regular arrangement drawing. They are also suitable for background for design. The more evidences are in technique file and A2 sketchbook. 57

For this project, I designed decorative wallpaper or decorative wall. According to market research, decorative wallpaper and laser-cut decorative wall are one popular productions in present day, especially in young generation. The theme of design is connecting with laser-cut and wallpaper together with traditional pattern and natural motif for young generation. And I tried to use new style of wallpaper for interior market. The whole ten designs can be divided two collections: similar colours for bedroom; contrasting colours for living room. The colour is from natural photography and starry sky, which has a colour blood to introduce in the section of colour. Pattern ideas have five pairs of them, including peony, ice block pattern with lozenge, chrysanthemum connecting with autumn plants, fish with aquatilia and cirrus plants, both of one for bedroom and one for living room. The most of pattern design is from visual research and market research. There will be two forms during ten designs, tactile wallpaper by fabric, linking to flock wallpaper, or colour paper, and using laser-cut style to the top level, making relationship with the background wallpaper by mount board or MDF borad. During the exercise, I would try to use many different materials to choose better one. The most background of design used the texture pattern from starry sky and mark drawing exercise. In this component, it introduces the steps for final design, including visual research and drawings. And there are some development design, not used for final design.

There are some drawings which is origin for design pattern. This design focuses on Chinese traditional pattern of peony and feng, adding to the texture or layout pattern of cloud and garden window, visual research. During the drawing, it also has other development drawing to help final design, which is in the sketchbook. 60

The top images are the levels of design one whose background is linked to garden window, visual research, and the clouds and peony pattern is Chinese traditional motif. The top level is felt with a flora shape, which connects with flock wallpaper. This style idea of design is from artist, Clars Coles who would like to use textile to complete her works. This design used complementary colours of purple and yellow to attract people’s vision. This end use of production for living room. 61

This design has a same idea with design one, peony pattern. The background is from texture drawing, and the second level is the damask pattern, filled with texture starry sky after colour reduction. The top pattern in wallpaper is based on peony flower and leaves drawn by line. The laser-cut pattern is based on Chinese traditional pattern, feng, which is the decoration in this design. The colour of design is violent which is in a same colour blood with little change, so it is designed for bedroom. 62

Development design
This is development design for design two. There is another texture design to be the background, but this texture background is too busy to match design, so I change to another texture pattern with three colours and making circle pattern together. In this design, damask pattern uses single colour which has relationship with background colours. For final design, damask pattern is filled with starry sky texture point as similar as the backgorund. For colours, this design has many colour ways. according to comparison, I decided the design using violent, but it would have a new arrangement for pattern design.

This design of pattern is based on plants in winter, connecting with traditional pattern. These are samples of visual research from photography and internet images. The theme of this pair of designs is window pattern by laser-cut machine to make top level pattern connecting with background wallpaper design.

These are example drawings based on research. This pair design connect with the theme of winter, which can be found the same pattern of ice block pattern and snowflake. About the top level design, both of them obtain ideas from Chinese garden window which can look through the first level to depth into the second wallpaper. It is a good way for decorative wallpaper in bedroom or living room. 66

This design starts from texture drawing, and the vital colour is green which is suitable for bedroom. The block pattern filled into texture pattern by nedgraphic. For connecting with laser-cut top level, I put some snowflake pattern under the ice block. And the outline snowflake links to laser-cut snowflake.

Final design – second pair (four)
Design four has a same pattern of ice block with design three. This design changed texture to point, and the ice block just has single colour of blue, which is connected with the theme of winter. The cirrus is inlayed into ice block to add rhythm. The leaves used the similar colour with background for setting off red flowers, plum, which represents quiet and magnificent. It used red colour to contrast the blue background. The foreground laser-cut design is based the window pattern which is also used winter original objects. 68

Development design
This is development design for design three. It used the texture pattern to be background without colour reduction, so it has a contrasting colour match, which is too busy to be background. And the middle ground of white snowflake outline which is changed to green colour in final design is not clear. About the top level of laser-cut design, it has two steps to the present design. First, it used the green mount board which is similar with background not attracting eyes. Therefore, I changed to the gradient colour of yellow which has more attention. However, development design has a regular arrangement without linking to the background, it is changed to the final design which has relationship with top level and 69 background wallpaper.

Development design
The top two design is the development design for design four. It has the same background with final design, but the cirrus is different type. First, I decide the pattern is plum and pine tree. The cirrus is a straight layout in development design. There is a little busy, which does not have connection with top level design. The left six group is various colour ways for final design, which is changed by nedgraphic. The first design is green which is the same with design three, but during the all exercise, I preferred to choose the colour way with blue background with red flora pattern, which is suitable for living room and connects with my vital colour, contrasting colour design. 70

This pair design focuses on autumn pattern, including chrysanthemum, maple and gingko, connecting with bird and damask pattern from artist research of Louise Body and Linda Florence. The autumn colour is yellow and I depth into the colour to brown which links to yellow blood.

These sample drawings are disposed by software colour reduction or illustrator of image trade. This design also connects with texture pattern and objects drawing patterns from nature. This pair links to Liouse Body designs which would like to use natural objects. And I add into geometry and damask pattern to ornament works.

Design five focuses on vital colour of brown for bedroom. It does not have a contrasting match. This design starts form texture pattern with geometry drawing. It continued to use straight layout work with similar colour of background texture. The middle ground has a changeable colour to pink and yellow, but all of them is on same colour blood, decorating brown colour. About the top level pattern, this design used felt, linking to flock wallpaper which can be found in market research. This type of wallpaper will have 74 tactile quality.
Final design – third pair (six)
Design six chose light yellow colour for living room. This colour will be comfortable, which is suitable for contemporary interior design. It has a simple texture background with damask pattern. In this design, I used gingko to complete a flower instead of real flora. The top level is made by laser-cut machine, then paste them together to obtain more levels. This is tactile wallpaper which is suitable for decorations, linked to Linda Florence. 75

The theme of the pair design is water. There are some research with fish and different plants in water connecting with water and wave. The design continued to use the ideas of Louise Body’s design, natural pattern. And fish is the Chinese traditional pattern which means warm family forever. 77

This design is for living room, which used the complementary colours of blue and orange. This time did not use texture pattern to be background. It used single colour of blue to help wave pattern with texture stamp. The lotus and clouds pattern are the decorations in this design. Fish is the shining point, connecting with the top level of laser-cut. This top level also used MDF board to decorate wallpaper. it makes the design to have 3D result, and the design would be more vivid. 79

Fish is the conjunct theme in this pair. However, this design make fish into the design, it used colour paper to be decoration, which links to Clars Coles. This background is from watercolour painting, and the middle ground makes eddies of water and aquatic weed which connected fish motif. The colour is changed many times. For the final design, background changed to be darker and the aquatic weed to be lighter, which shows a result like noctilucent objects. 80

Development design
For this pair of design, it has kept a large change during many different exercise. At first, it is the left two design which focus on bamboo which is the theme of the design. Then I decide the part of design is water, so I would like to use bamboo to match fish and wave with material of denim to connect with flock wallpaper. However, it does not have a good vision, the bamboo makes the design to be more crowded. Therefore, I change the different match later. In final design, I changed water objects to match fish, and top level material is changed to colour paper which can choose colours easier. 81

Visual research
The theme of pair design is circle cirrus. This idea is from the bloom circle by Nicole Gustafsson. There are three example of the visual research. Various plants combine to a circle which is illustrator style. And this design also connects with plant. On the other way, the cirrus pattern idea is from Susan Bradly’s works. She would like to use this type design to arrange her laser-cut works, so I study this pattern for my wallpaper design. 83

These are one part for my drawing image. There are many circles because of the theme of the design. All of these circles are combined with different drawings. The fist circle is completed by three gingko, and the second is combined with simple flora and cirrus. The green one is reduced colour by nedgraphic, which used many types and kinds of flora and leves to make together. It is the background in my design. 84

This design is for living room, which has a little contrasting colours with colour paper. The background is used the circle with starry sky stamp. The plain paper is filled into purple, and the circle motif used similar light purple. The circle cirrus to be decorations changed two colour ways. The foreground of wallpaper is the butterflies. There are two butterflies to break the regular to make design more interesting. The top level lasercut butterfly used the same way with design six, which links to Linda Florence with tactile wallpaper. 85

In this design, the background used texture pattern with cirrus motif. There are two level flora patterns with two types around cirrus. The top flora used line drawings to be the foreground, and the below flora circle used gradient colour to decorate wallpaper. And for connecting with laser-cut wood circle, there is another level of cirrus which has an obvious colour. The background also 86 has the same pattern of laser-cut circle flora, which is the relationship with top level.

Development design
The vital difference is the circle blooms with the final design. There are three types of circle blooms in design. The colourful one is the original image, which is combined with various flora and leaves from my drawings. This is the foreground at first, but it breaks the balance of design. Then, I make image trade with illustrator to use the outline of the circle to be the background, but it is busy here. Therefore, I changed the colour to be brown with red brown cirrus. During many times exercises, I choose the final design arrangement, because this design is for bedroom, so it needs to use similar colorus. Therefore, I chose the red colour, connecting with the foreground pattern, and decorate the texture background with cirrus. 87

Conclusion & evolution
In conclusion, according to this project, I make a new challenge of wallpaper which connects with laser-cut, making a new style of design in interior market. Decorative wallpaper and laser-cut wall is one popular productions in present day via market research, so I try to expand a more wide choices for decorative wallpaper in interior design. I focus on two styles of tactile wallpaper and laser-cut decorative wallpaper which is used for living room behind sofa or bedroom behind bed. I designed five pairs of pattern ideas, including peony, ice block pattern with lozenge, chrysanthemum connecting with autumn plants, fish with aquatilia and cirrus plants, both of one for bedroom with similar colour and one for living room with contrasting colour. The vital challenge is that I used various materials for laser-cut to choose better one to connect with wallpaper design. The new style can be as a good role for decorations or tactile wallpaper. The materials have fabric, colour paper; mount board and MDF board with different match through the whole designs.
Therefore, this challenge for the design is the new style wallpaper in interior design. For future evolution, I want to try more materials with various pattern to design the works, connecting with future material like sustainable or recycle fabric. And I can continue to link to Linda Florence’s creations, making more designs for tactile wallpaper with hard or metal paper. For end use, I can try to design more types for interior design.
