VISUAL RESEARCH William Morris William Morris as an English textile designer, artist, writer, and libertarian socialist related with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and English Arts and Crafts Movement (Morris & Co, N.D). He as a historical designer whose works used to be wallpapers, pattern on clothes and so on, which was also popular now. His many works used plants to be the base, which used lines and colours to describe the realistic things. I like his works which used

some natural things to show the whole design. There were some flowers, leaves, birds and fruits (Fig.1). It always showed many details to make repeat pattern (Fig.2). The all of the different plants have their own characteristic, and he embellished various lines and individual colours to display the same pattern.
They
gave
the
different
feelings.
The work of Design for Tulip and Willow indigo-discharge (Fig.3) used the cirrus as background, and the flower bloomed Fig.2
in it. I drew the same with the cirrus as
the background in drawing, and repeated the pattern to make them together. The one by one same leaves sets the flowers more clear (Fig.4). The other
works, one of them, I just drew flowers with lines. I tried to make the whole flowers in the work to be combined (Fig.5). The line part and shadow part is the positive and negative in this work.

Rob Ryan A British Paper cutter artist who would like to
make
paper-cutting,
screen-printing,
drawing and painting (TAG Fine Art, 2013). He is most famous for his detailed paper cut outs (TAG Fine Art, 2013). He used paper cutting to show the world. I like it because of the interesting style. He used positive and negative to show the objects. The work of Can We (Fig.6) displays many words and little flowers which just showed the outline of the objects. The same things with work of Fig.6
I Can't Forget (Fig.7) and Our Adventure
(Fig.8) also just the outline in paintings, but the differences are details. The last two drawings are easier than the first one, so it is more like shadow.
Fig.10
Fig.11
I like the special way to show art. I try to cut the shadow of flowers to describe works (Fig.9). And I repeated the same flower in one paper. Tried to use different styles to feel positive and negative. The one of them used negative way to empty the shadow of leaves (Fig.10), and another one used positive style to fill the flowers (Fig.11). The another work used the same paper-cutting to repeat it one by one. The some of them just used the line and another used black colour to fill the empty (Fig.12). I want to make the black one like shadow to be background in paper. The last one just drew the outline with different flowers, and the background used pencil to fill it (Fig.13).

Claude Heath Claude Heath, as a contemporary artist in London, tries different styles in drawing (Trinity Contemporary, 2013). He would like to draw while blindfolded, and he also extended his technique to make
three-dimensional
drawings
(Trinity Contemporary, 2013). He used perspex mounts and coloured inks with the
horizontal
outline
and
vertical
contours to structure his works (Trinity Contemporary, 2013). Gold Lace Primula (Fig.14) used colour inks with repeat circles. He used the simple geometry to describe the flowers. It can give a different feeling from the various colour and size circle. The another picture of Fig.14
Acrobats (Fig.15) used the mark to be three
people. I think this is an interesting style to contribute objects. Three people with individual moving in this picture. The colour with black and white shows the shape clearly. There are not outline, so it just used the repeat mark to build the whole work. Waterfall (Fig.16) just used the normal black ink to finish. This work’s mark used line and circle to describe.
Fig.15
The long line was like the water to fall from the mountain. And the place with circle was like the water hit the rock.
Fig.16 I like his work of the shape with mark. He used the simple and repeat mark to build the different objects. I tried to use ink to draw different feelings from plants (Fig.17). And used lines, point and circle to build the one by one block. I also used the cutting paper as mark to repeat more time (Fig.18). The shape with flowers filled into the whole paper, and one of the flower also used ink with water to make a good viewing with point mark (Fig.12).

Tim Knowles
Fig.19
Tim Knowles is a British artist (Tim Knowles, 2013). He want to find the result and the process which is important in the life, so he always use special material to build his works, such as windwalk, nightwalk, tree drawing and so on (Tim Knowles, 2013). I found the picture with tree drawing (Fig.19), which was like a signature for trees (Tim Knowles, 2013). When the wind blew the trees, the branches would move. The final work was a mark drawing like others, but the process was interesting. People did not know the drawing until it finished. Another work is called nightwalk (Fig.20), which is “a series of illuminated walks made at night and recorded as long exposure photographs (Tim Knowles, 2013). This is a new way to structure work. The light in the night was obvious. The line was like a road in the dark night. It gave a silence feeling to people.
I like his works because he special style to draw the induvial objects. We did
not know the ink on paper until it finished. I think that different technique can

give mind with creation. I tried to drawing something with special but simple tools. The painting of flowers (Fig.21), I used garden stick to draw. It was difficult to control ink, but also can give a good shape for it. Another one was mark-making with drawing knife (Fig.22). I wanted to draw the leaves on the flowers, so used much black colour which can give a good texture on it. The last one was used sponge (Fig.23). It was like point mark on it. I used the paper cutting to be the shape, and the put the ink on sponge to print on paper. It was also difficult to control ink, but it can borrow other things to be a fixed shape. It is a good time to try different technique. It can help me to be new mark, and can also find new shape with various tools. Fig.21

Comparison Artists in research, William Morris is historical designer, and the other three are contemporary artists. They would like to use special materials. For example, Rob Ryan uses cutting paper to show his work, and Tim Knowles tries many ways with unconventional things to draw. As mark-making designers, Claude Heath uses the styles with unorthodox, blindfolded and so on to draw by himself, but Tim would like to use natural objects like tree, wind, light, and so on (Fig.19 & Fig.20) to help him to draw. Claude is a plan with shape to paint (Fig.15), but Tim do not know the painting until it finishes. William Morris and Claude Heath are also to draw the flowers to be the pattern. William uses the classical way to draw the realistic plants (Fig.1), but Claude shows it with circle and some geometry (Fig.14). The most spacial way in the four artists is Rob. He used cutting paper to show the positive and negative with objects, but can also find repeat pattern in his works (Fig.8).
Conclusion Final work
The end of this project, I finished four final work with plants. In the project, I tried to use many special but simple style to draw. The blind drawing and continued line drawing are interesting, but it is difficult to control the pictures. The style of using different material, I think that it is a good way to find mark by accident.
In this project, successful things by me is to try different ways to draw. All of them is unconventional styles. I like positive and negative way specially, because using the shape of objects can neglect some details, but it needs me to find the shape details. In this way, I find that it is different viewing from daily time. In the final work, the one of them used leaves shape with background. Printing black colour in negative part and emptying the shadow showed the work with unusual way. And another work was filled into black colour in positive part with flowers. The empty part drew the same flowers with black part to add the picture. Other two drawing used cutting paper to repeat the same flower one more time. They used water with ink, charcoal and black colour to overlay more times. The point in the flowers shaped marks. In the research, I found the historical textile designer of William Morris, so I wanted to try my best to simulate his way of realistic drawing. I draw flowers and cirrus with line to copy the style. And another research of Claude Heath, I liked his mark to draw different objects. I tried to use dry black colour to make points more time.
On the other hand, there are also some insufficiencies. First, I did not have a good ability to draw the plants with line. There are some problems when I drew the outline. Second, I did not have more time to try more styles with drawing. When I collected artists, I found that it is a good way to make mark. Using inventional ways can experience many accident. In the accident, I can find virous patterns. Third, I should find more special plants in daily life. The abnormal plants can give specific viewings. And another, I think I should read more books with different styles’ artists. Find the feelings from many artists,
and find the best style for me. It can also copy artists’ painting to improve my technique.
In the future, I want to try more styles and technique with drawing. And I also think that I need to draw more picture in daily life. Collecting research with different styles’ artists can get mind and feelings. Improve my imagination with this way. It is important to make the base of works. The photography is also important. Take some pictures what I would like. It can draw them in realism first, and then I can try to change the plants or other objects to make more ornamental.
In conclusion, I think I need more time to find and try more way in the daily life. And improve the technique and get more imagination.
