VISUAL RESEARCH Louise Body She would like to use the simple and elegant pattern from nature. Louise designs taking the base of lace or leaves, and she also uses birds and flowers from nature. The picture (Fig.2) is about birds to be the wallpaper. I researched another one is about plants. They are combined with various types’ leaves. And there are the same pattern with different colours (Fig.1). The combination with background and foreground are also various. I like her works from nature, and the same leaves with different colour. The same type’s works can have a new view because of pattern’s arrange and colours.

Cole & Son Cole & Son is a designer for wallpaper industry. He uses the block designs to print his works. The picture of Butterflies (Fig.3) is combined with different colourful butterflies, but the same block repeat. I prefer the crackle on butterflies’ wings, and change the positive and negative with same pattern. The wallpaper of Optimum Woods (Fig.4) drew with point and short lines. It used the density to show woods’ shadow. I like the technique of point drawing. Is uses the simple technique to show the dark and light.

Fromental Fromental’s design is Asiatic theme. It do not have block repeat, and it is about embroidery and silk patterns (Fig.5). Some Chinese plants such as bamboo, Chinese sparrows and variegated leaves. The base is the Asiatic objects (Fig.6), and he also presents with simple lines or geometrics (Fig.7). I like the pattern with the special plants, and describe with easy shapes.

Timorous Beasties Bwasties’s design is based on triffid-like plants and large scale fish, and

repeats them on the heavy fabrics. The works use the careful colour and harsh lines (Fig.8). And he also uses some pattern with architectures (Fig.9) to repeat. I like the pattern with careful lines (Fig.10). They are always filled into many details to every object. Hanna Werning Werning would like to design the shapes to take out of context. There are different animals such as seahorses with pumas and the plants with flowers and leaves (Fig.11). These works are based on peaceful air. And another way, her works always use one by one shape part not lines or points (Fig.12). The colourful parts combine together to show a warm and peaceful life. The background is like a picture with positive and negative (Fig.13). I prefer the shape with positive and negative and the special context drawing. Although it is a little bit colourful, it can show a warm atmosphere. Wook Kim Kim is a graphic artist, painter and installation artist. His works use traditional patterns and motifs. The interesting design for his patterns is that he usually puts unexpected animals into the odd intervals of plants (Fig.14). There are also same patterns with different colours (Fig.15). I think the arrange is interesting, which special objects in the plain background.

Johanna Basford Basford’s design is based on the organic drawing. They are always white and black with wildlife and nature. There are many details with lines to draw different animals and plants (Fig.16). They arrange with one line by one line (Fid.17). The drawing with black and white is realistic presentation. The line repeat can make the work tidier.

Susan Bradley Bradlwy would like to design with 3D to be outdoor wallpaper. The pattern is

also based on plants. The important difference is various materials. The repeat patterns with positive and negative is like plants climbing on the wall (Fig.18). Design in the home is like staying in the natural world (Fig.19). I like the work with positive and negative with cutting in 3D. The special use ness can give the especial feeling in the environment.

William Morris Morris is a pioneer of English Arts and Crafts Movement. His many works used plants to be the base to be the wallpaper or fabrics. I chose the example of cirrus plants, which can find many details (Fig.20). The cirrus plants are used to be the background of the whole design. The plain design can emphasise patterns with different types on the background.

Comparison For the final digital work, I tried to use the same patterns with different colours (Fig.21) like Louise Body and Wook Kim. And chosen one pattern to be another pattern’s background (Fig.22). In the final digital (Fig.23), I would like to draw the cirrus to be the background like William Morris, and put another flowers in the plain background, which wanted to copy the feeling with Wook Kim. For the Final 1, I drew the flowers with lines in a shape (Fig.24) like Fromental. And used the negative and positive. For the Final 2 (Fig.25), I drew the Asian flowers like Fromental’s objects in her work. And tried many different patterns in the flowers (Fig.26). The last chosen the pattern with crackle like Cole & Son’s work of Butterflies. For the Final 3 (Fig.27), I used the positive and negative shape to be the background like Hanna Werning, and drew the flowers with lines like William Morris’ work.

In other drawing, I draw the flowers with one part by one part (Fig.28) to be a shape like Hanna Werning. And tried to use the lines (Fig.29) to fill with the shape of objects like Fromental. I drew some works just black lines (Fig.30 & Fig.31) like Johanna Basford. I drew some positive and negative picture (Fig.32) with black and white colour like Susan Bradley. The digital one was based on the point and short lines (Fig.33 & Fig.34). I learned from Cole & Son’s tree drawing.

Conclusion Final work

In conclusion, the vital technique I used with positive and negative with lines drawing. In the three black and white final drawing, the first one, I used the negative shape which is full into the lines. The second one, I drew with positive and used lines to segment the part of flowers. The third one, I drew the negative part and drew another flowers to fill the space. The digital work, I used the lines to draw the cirrus plants to be the background, and used the part flowers to put into the space.

This patterns of my design is for wallpaper, so I find many artists designed wallpaper. And the patterns also apply to the fabric to make the interior decorations or fabric furnitures. The pattern of digital design can be fit into some bags or boxes storing things.

The successful things for this project, I tried different types and techniques to continue the project 1. But the vital of my work is also positive and negative. Then, drawing some little paintings with several minutes is a good way to find the road of final. I tried to draw different kinds of plants to find the perfect way to present the various plants. And find the way to combine the plants together. I think that combination different objects together is a good taste to find special feelings rather than the simple research of the same type’s objects. Another good successes is looking through many artists in this project. Getting a good research can obtain inspiration. It can help me to gain a good thought with design. And tried to learn some things such as context, technique, colours and so on to design own work.

In another part, I think I should draw more different types’ plants, specially some uncommon things. I think that the way can give more inspiration. The research is also important. Tried my best to research more artists, which can help me to study more techniques and thoughts. Then draw the picture with these ways to find which way is fitted me.

In the future, I would like to put simple colour in the three final with drawing. And I will try to change the details in the space of positive or negative. Then if I can, I want to do the pattern with fabric. For the research, I will continue to research more different artists with various patterns. And I also want to find artists of fashion design. Find the different patterns with interior design and fashion. And obtain the mind with season from fashion design. In conclusion, I think I need more time to draw more paintings and to do more research to get inspiration.
