ARTIST RESEARCH Ptolemy Mann Ptolemy Mann would like to use dyeing skills with her unique way including of a modern-day Bauhaus philosophy and her colour theory (Mann, 2013). Her unique approach help hand dyeing and weaving active in the 21st century (Mann, 2013). She combined gradient colours and contrasting colours together with hand dyeing. And used weaving to embellish the whole works.
- Colours without weaving
These works all used gradient colours in different parts. Then arrange them with a orderly way.
- Weaving works
These works used gradient colours to be the background, and weaving paper used contrasting colours to ornament the works.
- My works
I want to learn the colours and the management from her works, so I tried to apply pastel to complete the gradient background. And I made the rectangle and point paper to stick. And the last two works tried using weaving paper to complete. The last two used two different paper together, because they can give a new gradient background. Gradient colours can have a various views, and the colours change is good for visual effect.
- Ptolemy Mann’s design products
Noble Golden She uses weaving paper to show her minds. She would like to make creations from papers torn into strips, hand woven and embellished with beads and threads (Golden, 2014). Each bead decorates papers often with colours of soft grays, beiges and browns (Golden, 2014).
- Noble Golden’s weaving paper
These weaving paper just used simple, soft and light colours. And can find various materials as decorations such as beans and buttons.
- My works
The first work, I used cotton thread with knotted stitches to be each point on the weaving place. The second one used silk fabric in the weaving paper. The third one used paper to be each point and beans together. Next one, it used sting to be a knot, and stick them to make a weaving pattern. The last one used clips lines to decorate paper weaving. This way can embellish patterns.
- Her other works
She used paper weaving and various materials to create paper bowl.
Margo Selby Margo Selby designs exceptional quality fabrics, rugs and accessories with woven textile (Selby, 2014). It blends with both contemporary and classic interiors (Selby, 2014). It makes her innovative hand-woven structures with industrial machinery together, and creates the first 3-dimensional fabrics (Selby, 2014).
- Selby’s works
These works based on geometries to gain a 3D effect. And used a series colours together.
- My works
I found the pattern from rubbing, and tried to use cotton thread to give a 3D effect like her works. Used straight stitches to complete circles and can have a convex feeling. This way can have a real feeling with concave-convex change with hand.

Bella Online Tamara Bostwick (2014) who is Bella Online's Sewing Editor said, smocking works are good at using lightweight, even-weave fabrics such as voile or lawn. And it is a nice way to create garments (Bostwick, 2014).
- Bella’s works
These works all used smocking and it shows the technique can use anyway. In these sample, some made the flowers patten and some just were the background or drape.
- My works
I used smocking in different materials, but just in a simple way. I made the first one to have a different pattern in both sides. Another one, it used jean fabric, and tried to make a line pattern under pocket.
Alison Willoughby She would like to change old garments to gain a new style (Willoughby, 2014). And she makes clothes to attract on colour, texture, tone, scale, shape, proportion, pattern, line and placement (Willoughby, 2014). These garments also combined with various materials such as glass and paper (Willoughby, 2014).
- Alison Willoughby’s works
These samples are all skits. She used old garments to create. It added some drapes and new materials. The new patterns have more layered.
- My works
The first three works, I used silk scarves as decoration on paper. And the last three, they were made by jeans with various places. It is interesting, because the old garments have patterns, so it is important to choose placements.
Shadowfolds It used needle and thread to make various geometries. And these geometries built a new shape like flowers.
- Works & Products
These
works
complected
with
various
geometries and to be a flowers. The light can be throughout the fabric to make the shadow. The concavo-convex change can have many layers.
- My works
The first three works, I used the technique and pattern from the book, and get various shapes. Then, the last three, I used different materials and unique background on the fabric. They all have a shadow, but they are not clear.
Final work Final one & two
This work’s pattern was from circle rubbing. There are four discs to be a group. This idea was from Margo Selby. Her works usually have a 3D vision. I tried to use thread with straight stitches to fill the circle, and made the work have more layers. These fabrics was from old jeans, studying the way from Alison Willoughby. The Final one chose the end of jeans leg, because it have little colours change and drape like another rubbing in development. Then I used different sizes’ circles to be the last layer. Final two also chose the jeans leg, and combined with cutting pocket. These circles have a series colour from dark to light. And made smocking with drape under pocket.

- Development works
Final three & four
This creation also from rubbing. I used gradient colour like Ptolemy Mann. And I tried to use the colour arrangement like her, so I complected one group with two colour parts with pastel. I also used fabric and thread to decoration works like Noble Golden’s paper weaving. Final three silk and jean fabric to be a line on the paper weaving. Final four has two group which all used same series
colour but different details to make together. And applied cotton thread with knotted stitches on the weaving places.
