Figure 2

Analysis to Figure 2 :The diagram illustrates how the complex structure of the base is formed via cutting of those three slicers. The colour lines show the pattern of the “blade” and also are projected on the base in order to illustrate the relationship. Another way to understand this diagram is that it clarifies how different sections are packed together through slots. The little diagram at the bottom shows the sections of the margin of the slicers. Instead of being rectangular, the parrellogram shape decrease the overall height when all slicers are packed together and functions as away to interlock the three slicers. Analysis of figure 1 The diagram shows the method that I adopted in order to produce nice ellipse shape via hand drawing. It based on the logic that lines are determined by points. In the case of straight lines, only two points are enough to determine it. But in terms of curves, the more points collected, the more accurate the drawing will be. The points locate at the intersection of each “blade” and the margin. It is obvious that all ellipses are of the same center and their long axis and short axis coincide. The only difference is the distance from centre to points on the curve. That' why I draw the normal of the original curve at each point collected before and mark the distance difference on the normal line which are jointed later o to form a new curve. The basic idea of this is like the offset command in rhino. Analysis of figure3: Using the same logic mentioned in analysis for figure 1, we are able to determine the curved surface of the complex base. Looking at the base through front section view, we are able to conclude that the curve of an egg is similar to the curve of the base top surface. This is useful in 3D modelling.

Process: 1. Draw plan using polyline, interpcurve, ellipse command. 2.Extrude curves (both tapered and straight). Split and join are frequently used as away to get the desired curve to extrude. Cap are used when the extrusion is not solid. 3. Boolean difference: this is used to cut volume from another solid. For example in order to create the curved top surface of the base, a egg is modelled and then boolean difference between the egg and the base. 4. Loft is used as well. 5. 1 way rail is used to create the recessed surface of the slicer margin.

The vertical bone serves as the main structure support and helps to create this elevated structure. These vertical strips take its inspiration from the slicers. The slicers cut the base in different directions and create beautiful shades. Learning from that, I located the strips in different angles. They are cutting and also shading the interior volume like the slicers do. The horizontal plates stops the strips from lateral movement, which gives the structure stability and strength. The strips and plates create an interesting layer between the outside and inside, emphasising both separation and connection. With the good view to the outside, it satisfies people's needs for large room even though the actual siz e of inter space is not that big. The reason why I use circular shaped plates and arrange sections in an irregular way is to break the rigid d highly repeated feature of this material system and give it a bit of fluid feature.

Sketch Design #1 “helmet”,semi-privacy,breath,shade

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

The whole structure is supported by human shoulder and head.

Voile as a decorative material is used to cover the end joint of strips and the whole skeleton structure around head. To increase privacy, voile can be moved to the front covering facial area a.

Model narrows at the front in order to reduce the uncomfortable feeling caused by rigid covering on sensitive facial area. With careful fabrication, it can have a necklace appearance

.

How does this respond to your personal space? Privacy is not highlighted in this design. Instead of developing a solid well to define and secure personal space, this model choose to build a semi-private zone linking the interior and exterior areas without compromising its function to keep people certain distance away. This gives people the sense of freedom. With abundant air flow, the user can breath normally within this “helmet”. In addition, I feel quite comfortable and relaxed if my neck and head are supported. But this is usually hard to achieve when people are standing. This design intends to solve that difficulty and bring comfort an relax to people.

Sketch Design #2 Suit, semi-private, flexible, adjustable

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

Dense strings

Steel frame –define each horizontal section

Steel frame

The steel frame can be packed close together by using clamps. Rubber –make suit adjustable

Rubber is in tension

.

This relates to gravity force.

How does this respond to your personal space? People's personal space changes under different circumstances. The adjustable feature of this suit is designed to copy with this changing needs. Compared with design 1, this suit provides a more enclosed space for users. But in addition to that, it still retains opportunity to communicate with outside via the gaps between strings. The communication can be air flow and sunlight penetration, but also can be communication with people. In the case of sunlight, this gives users a sense of security as well. In my case, I feel scared if I'm exposed to the dark suddenly and spend a long time inside it.

Sketch Design #3 Separation, barrier, defence, flat back

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

Front Top view: The hatched area is where the user locates.

Back

Front

How does this respond to your personal space? Unlike the previous two designs, this one really emphasizes the idea of separation and defense of personal space. The sharp points at the front clearly alarm people surrounding the user not to come close. As people tend to have a narrower personal space at the back, the flat design of the back prioritize the comfort of people when they try to lean back instead of the defense of personal space at the back.
