ABSTRACT This paper is based on research that focuses on the problem of “dead space” within the urban environment. The goal of this project is to come up with an interactive design intervention that will ultimately resolve issues of existing dead space. This paper will help readers obtain a clearer understanding of what “dead space” is and why it is so detrimental to the urban environment as well as define what interactive design is and how it can be beneficial to the revitalization of dead space. Finally, this paper discusses the process of this project and future developments

INTRODUCTION In India, the major population is between the age group of 18-45 which is approx. 44% and that of 45 and above is approx. 13% of the entire Indian population. India thrives in diversity and its culture which is now slowly wearing off among the youths because of westernisation. Now-a-days, the youth prefer indo-western culture so keeping that in mind, I have come up with this innovative clubhouse idea which will also root us to our culture and at the same time provides us activities we like to indulge in. We have so many gardens in India which are not even in use, because the youth likes recreational activities which provides them comfort instead of going out. Today’s technology has become so advanced that you can play any indoor or outdoor games on your gadgets, electronic devices. So to get this generation out of the loop of their reel world and to imbibe our culture and protect it we could provide them with real time experiences where they interact with each other, have fun and play games and also uplift the

cultural spirit of India which is celebrated by so many international stars and countries Like for example- Robert Downey Jr, Mark Zuckerberg and so many other famous international stars love Indian culture, its diversity and festivals by celebrating it with much joy. Also a fact, Yoga which is originated in India is being followed majorly by other countries. In India, we prefer gyms and western exercises instead of yoga So keeping all these factors in mind, I thought of coming up with an idea of inculcating everything at one place.

DEAD SPACE Throughout the urban environment there are pockets of spaces that deter the opportunity of social interaction. The spaces that are being referred to are called “Dead Spaces.” According to Tetsuya Umeda, a Japanese artist, dead space, “tends to emerge from the gap between what was envisioned for a building before it was constructed, and what was deemed necessary for it while the building was actually being used you might find that there is a lot of dead space within architecture that has been sloppily conceived.” According to Umeda, dead spaces are the result of poor planning. Developers, planners, or architects create buildings that do not flow within the existing built environment creating pockets of space, which are devoid of human occupancy. Conversely, dead spaces can be well planned and thought out, yet not as successful as originally intended. In these cases, the space can be highly occupied, yet devoid of any social interaction. In his works Umeda creates live performances in order to bring the audience attention to the surrounding space. To further clarify the definition, “dead space” is space within the built environment that is devoid of social interaction between people. Dead space can be further defined by breaking it down into three terms- Interstitial space, Urban Cracks and Non-place. pg. 8

Coming forward to my project, the site which I have selected is currently a dead space because this existing place is a private garden of a co-operative society. So only the residents of the building are allowed to use that garden. But as per my research, there are only 3 people below the age of 18. Maintaining or recreating the same space for just 3 people who hardly uses it is a waste of money and piece of land. Even if we consider other age population, no one wants to visit that place because it’s of no use to them. So according to me, if the space is not required or not efficiently used there is no point of keeping or restructuring it into a garden.

CASE STUDY In my project, the residential building is a 2 storey one having total 9 flats with 26 number of people residing here.

When I asked people what they desire and actually need, I came up with a bunch of things which included my vision and adding on amenities like additional parking space, security cabin, temple for the elderly people as they are half of the building’s population, space for recreation activities and a serene space for fitness and relaxation. pg. 11

NEW PROPOSAL PLAN As per the needs and requirements of the people, and keeping all the government norms, terms and conditions allowed for construction, I came up with a plan which includes constructing a private building club house, with a temple and space for meditation and relaxation. The club house will help people to interact with each other, have real time gaming experience, spiritually connect with themselves via meditation in the yoga space created for them. It would also help them to root to their cultural environment by finding some time to visit temple in their premises and learn more about how diverse and wonderful our Indian culture is. My main aim was to envision a society which is a blend of Indian and Western culture and wanted to bring this to life because we all know we are slowly losing our culture, our ethnicity, our values to the westernisation. So we all have come so far in the wave of westernisation, it’s not possible to eradicate it but we could do one thing that is not lose our culture and its moral values which can be achieved by balancing our Indian culture and the westernisation which we have adopted. So here is the proposed plan with the zoning of space.

CONCLUSION My main aim of this project was to create something which is useful in this small place to the people residing over here as well as has some meaning to our new generation to look up to. If we don’t preserve our culture, there is no way the future generation will learn to do that. So this is the symbol which I want to create to carry forward our Indian culture and re-imbibe its diverse energy and positivity.
