Project 1: Human Perception of Comfort Level Objectives: 1. To identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people 2. To understand what is thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort 3. To analyze the effect of thermal comfort factors in a person and in a space 4. To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525 and UBBL. Learning Outcomes: To be able to understand the general principle of heat transfer 1. Identify environmental conditions related to site conditions, climate, etc. 2. Explain the effects of the sun on the thermal performance of buildings 3. Explain the effect of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on thermal performance of buildings. 4. Infer how different building material (K-value, u-value, r-value) has different effect on heat gain or thermal environment in a given space

Project 2: Integration with Design Studio 3 Objectives: 1. To be able to show understanding of thermal comfort properties in final design studio. 2. To be able to solve design problems in relation to sustainability issues. 3. To be able to design spaces in terms of thermal comfort referring to MS1525 and UBBL. Learning Outcomes: 1. Estimate heat gain in a space and to provide passive solutions for it. 2. Evaluate control of variables such as heat and ventilation 3. Judge the limits of acceptable or desirable conditions (thermal environment) and recommend designs that control the effects of sun on the thermal performance of buildings (shading devices)

Project 2: Integration with Design Studio 3 The Western Road Christian Cemetery is located in Penang, Malaysia. Its climate is hot and humid with an average temperature of 31ยบC and relative humidity of 90%. The wind direction is coming from the eastern side as well as the northern east side of the site. This allow the cemetery to have enough air ventilation.
Passive Design Cross Ventilation
Zoning
Ground Floor Plan Natural Ventilated
First Floor Plan Mechanical Ventilated
Second and a half Floor Plan
The building is elevated up to direct the wind to enter the building, cooling up the space intended as shown in the diagram.
Cross ventilation is able to remove hot air from the space. Therefore, lexx mechanical ventilator is needed to cool down the space.
Project 2: Integration with Design Studio 3
The Western Road Cemetery receive almost up to 12 hours of sunlight and shades. Based on the sunpath diagram, the elevation which will have the maximum exposure of solar radiation is the East Elevation. This will affect the thermal comfort level of the building.

Thermal Comfort level 26’C OTTV= 106.7 W/m2 Not compiled with MS1525: 2007, Overall thermal transfer value not more than 50 W/m2
Suggested Solution To further reduce the OTTV, and enhance the thermal comfort of the user, there’s a few methods could be adopted. 1. Under the roof, it is possible to install a layer of insulation such as 25mm fiberglass, this would reduce the U value of the roofing, thus reduces the heat gain of the roof. 2. On the north facade, it is recommended to open more openings to maximize air flow within the walkway, it also promotes the cross ventilation to take place
