GENERATIVE ALGORITHMS IN THEATRE DESIGN

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Modern

cinemas has evolved to a space of Immersive experience. Sophisticated technologies have revolutionized the viewing experience. Technology has evolved to a level of providing sensory experience where the patrons can experience the movie with Light, Sound, Motion, Aroma and evenTouch.

Like Digital Technology revolutionized Cinema to achieve a close-to-reality experience, Digital techniques (ie Generative algorithms or Parametric approach in Design process) employed in form generation,Analysis & Fabrication has altered the traditional Spatial Design Process, It present Designers with wide range of possibilities in form finding, elevates the user-experience to a different level owing to its sophisticated forms & provides new methods in fabrication like Rapid Prototyping, CNC Fabrication,3D Printing etc.

Prime importance is given to provide the movie viewers a Unique Sensory experience. Creating an element of surprise by designing theatre & the other space in stark contrast, Installation Art Space, D-Box Seating which simulates motion in the movie are some of the features adopted to elevate the patron’s experience

THE FIRM: D LIGHT CINEMAS

D Light has been established to capture an important segment in Indain cinema market. D LIGHT is opening its first screen in the proposed Multiplex in Chennai.The firm intends to roll out the concept throughout the upcoming screens in various metro cities in India. This new cinema concept targets all socio-economic categories but with a particular emphasis on the growing cinema audiences within the A, B and C demographics, families and also the mature market.

The Light seeks to create a dynamic cinema offer, exploiting the flexibility of digital cinema and offering wide range of sensory experiences, with supporting food and drink.

THE CONCEPT

D Light is a new concept for the cinema experience with an exciting, highly inclusive, interactive & immerse the viewer in a whole sensory experience .This environmental change, combined with the digital revolution in film provides an unbeatable combination of style and content.

REAR WALL PANELING:

Rear wall panelling uses a simple method of achieving Sound absorption by a Single skin Cavity wall(9” air gap with glasswool lining) finished with Decorative wall panels. The cavity wall also helps in Insulating Projector room Noise coming into the theatre space. This specific design also accounts to the Optimum revereberation time achieved(0.94 sec at 1000 HZ)

WOODEN FLOOR

Wooden parquet panels directly mounted on concrete subfloor helps in achieving the reverberation time in the prescribed limit.

DOOR

Theatre door is acoustically designed to match the absorption of the adjacent walls for a uniform absorption.

SIDE WALL PANELING

Oblique surfaces of the Square Pyramid shaped modules on the walls create unparallel surfaces on either sides which will subsequently cutoff the standing waves. PU foam backing of the fabric used provides optimum Sound absorption. Air Gap(with Glasswool lining) of 9” between the panelling and the wall further adds to the Acoustic performance. The kind of detailing done for supporting Individual wall panels using “steel Section & Rubber damping” is the key element in Sound Insulation of the theatre( ie preventing Theatre Sound going out & Preventing External sound coming in)

ALGORITHM FOR PARAMETRIC LOUVRE DESIGN (SOFTWARE: RHINO 5 & GRASSHOPPER, RENDERING-3DS MAX,VRAY)

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Architectural design has its medium in order to deliver thoughts. There are sketches, diagrams,drawings and details usually on paper with different drawing tools or printed out of CAD software.There are study models, (architectural) models and detail models using various materials like foam and cardboard to represent the reality in small scale physical models or in 3D digital representations.

Sound is a mechanical wave that results from the back and forth vibration of the particles of the medium through which the sound wave is moving. Because of the longitudinal motion of the air particles, there are regions in the air where the air particles are compressed together and other regions where the air particles are spread apart. These regions are known as compressions and rarefactions respectively. The compressions are regions of high air pressure while the rarefactions are regions of low air pressure.

Algorithmic Design needs its own medium as well; This medium (Here Grasshopper plug-in for Rhinoenvironment) should provide facilities to deal with algorithms with geometrical operations.

TECHNOLOGIES USED

D-Box Seating- Uses D-Box motion code specifically programmed for each visual content which are sent to a motion system integrated into a platform or a seat.

DOLBY atmos: Reproduces a natural and life-like audio experience which allows sound to move around the theatre to create dynamic effects

BAFFLE WALL

Baffle wall: The front speaker cabinets should also be placed in a large baffle behind the screen. The baffle provides forward propagation for the lower frequencies. The baffle also stops sound from reverberating against the wall behind the screen. The difference between having a screen baffle is very noticeable in improving the sound system performance.

Volume, V= 3719.16 m3

RT60 = 0.161V/A = (0.161 x 3719.16)/ 638.56 = 0.94 seconds

RECOMMENDED RT60 FOR CINEMA THEATRE = (0.8-1.2)

Vertical positioning- Acoustic center placed at 2/3 of screen height

If screenwidth> 40 ft, then add 2 center speaker for smoother pans

Center to center distance - 6’6” to 9’9”

Angle between speakers- 30 degree or less , referred from the midpoint between 2 speakers at the edge of listening area.

All speakers angled towards central listening area.

Height approximately equal to 1/4th room width(for better coverage)

Dry wall false ceiling making use of Gyproc DuralineTM sheets gives a clean finish with the flexibility of doing recessed patterns & Covelighting. Choice of this specific material with absorption coifficient of 0.05 owes to the expected RT of 0.94 sec at 1000 HZ.
