year of work means a lot of things for our staff. It means 115.000 kilometers travelled. It means over 30.000 pictures taken on each event. It means spending three weeks of every other month to editing every new issue. It means hours and hours of interviews, fact checking, contacting athletes, local organizers and all kinds of people involved with Jiu-Jitsu nowadays. As we reach the end of another season of competition, we know all that work was more than worthwhile. Jiu-Jitsu World Magazine is an enterprise born with the mission

Fortunately, we have a dynamic and competent team that works tirelessly to fulfill the demands in front of them. Photographers, reporters, editors, page designers, fact checkers, etc. All of them play an important role in getting each issue ready for our readers. INTERVIEW
A Leader’s With tons of hard work and a smart approach to Jiu-Jitsu, João Gabriel Sousa climbed to the top of the adult male black belt division in the 2018/2019 season. In a exclusive interview, he thanks the people who helped him in his journey and sets bigger goals for an even brighter future on the mats Words: Ivan Trindade | Images: Ane Nunes
Jiu-Jitsu World: For those who don’t know you so well, can you tell us how you began training Jiu-Jitsu and when did you decided to make it your profession? João Gabriel Sousa: I started training in Fortaleza, at a social project called Jiu-Jitsu in good companion. It was led by Professors Jefferson Teixeira and Brayner, who were responsible for teaching me from the yellow belt all the way to the purple belt. After that I moved to the USA. I always liked sports as I was growing up and my mother was always big supporter of both my brother and I. When I first started training, I had no idea it could become my profession. The turning point was the moment I won my first Brazilian National championship as a blue belt. That’s when I first started believing that I could compete in the highest level. Now, as a black belt I will continue working to make history in the sport. Who were the most important people in your Jiu-Jitsu journey up to this point? What were the most valuable lessons they have taught you so far? A lot of people were very important in my Jiu-Jitsu journey so far. First, my mother, who even without good financial resources to pay for tournament registrations or plane tickets, she always supported me in a huge way. Whenever I was selling raffle tickets to raise money, she would go out and sell at least 50 tickets. My first Professors Jefferson Teixeira,
20
Brayner and Cristovão Índio, who helped me financially with tournament registrations, clothing and even food. Master Zé Radiola has always supported me since the very beginning. I will never forget what they all have done for me. I will be forever grateful. My friend and fellow black belt Lucas Rocha, who I met one day and we became like brothers in a matter of months. He has helped me a lot in becoming a better person. He is truly a very smart person with all the right morals. At last but definitely not least, my great friend Diego Ramalho. It’s actually hard to quantify how much he has helped me. He shows me that it is always possible to achieve what you want. All you need to do is to believe in it. From all this people, I have learned that nothing in life comes easy. You need a lot of persistence and hard work. There will be a lot of highs and lows. You need patience to make the right decisions that in the end all is going to be fine. You reached the end of the 2018/2019 season as the leader in the adult male black belt division. What are your secrets to maintain such a high level of performance? No secrets, just hard work. I train a lot! A lot! Six days a week, at least two times a day. On top of that I try to plan my training schedule to be smart about it and make the most of my time on the mats and also my resting time and the time to study my opponents.

Competitors who stand out like you do often become role models for younger athletes just starting their own Jiu-Jitsu journeys. What kind of advice would you give to a young white belt who aims to reach the heights you have achieved in the sport?
Listen to your Professors and do not complain. Be willing to pay the price, as it is a high price. To be on top is tiring, demanding and frustrating a lot of times, but it will give you a inexplicable feeling of joy and a taste of always wanting more. In the current season, you waged tough battles against Hiago George and João Miyao. To have such high level opponents changes anything in your training routine. Does it motivate you even more? I try to train my game and to evolve my techniques. I also try to study the game of the best opponents in my division. I want to know what they do best so I am able to avoid getting caught in their game. I want to have my options so I don’t get frustrated during the match. It’s very rare for me to be caught by surprise in any match. I study my matches and try to learn from the mistakes I made and also from the different sceneries that show up in each match.
Gabriel and Hiago waged memorable battles in the 2018/2019 season
The UAEJJF competition circuit has become a stronghold for athletes for awarding them with hefty money prizes. In your opinion, what is the importance for a professional athlete to have their efforts and results rewarded with monetary prizes? In my case, as with most athletes, I can say that the prizes help me to invest in a better training routine with resources to invest in recovery methods, better meals, etc. To have financial stability makes you less worried with things outside the mats and helps you focus on your training. Besides that, the UAEJJF gives a huge value to athletes as its tournaments are global stages for us to shine. It’s a great feeling to the welcomed and recognized wherever Jiu-Jitsu is present.
The third place at the Abu Dhabi King of Mats lightweight bracket was another proof Gabriel is among the best in his weight class

From Tokyo, on July 2018, to London, on March 2019, the 2018/2019 season of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour was the most successful so far. For nine months, the best competitors in the world travelled around the globe to compete in all five events of the tour. Before, during and after each leg of the ADGS Tour, they flooded social media with proud posts of their experiences and achievements. They shared the places they visited, the people they met, the matches they won or lost. The posts came in as many different languages as you can imagine, but all shared the same honor of being part of something so great. As we heat up for an even bigger season in 2019/2020 with not five, but six stops on the tour as we add Moscow to the itinerary, we hope to keep on finding our heroes online. Keep using the hashtags #adgs #abudhabigrandslam so we have the chance of featuring your post on our pages. See you on the mats!

UAEJJF Athlete’s Ranking
Know your way to the top Understanding the UAEJJF athletes ranking Words: Rodrigo Valério, Ivan Trindade | Image: Ane Nunes
28
Jiu-Jitsu World
The New UAEJJF World Ranking Format Based on rules of the Olympic Charter, the Qualification System aims to ensure that the principles of universality, performance, country, representation and gender equity, remain the focus for the UAEJJF participation. In addition, a number of other technical principles and rules have been established to provide a basis for the development of the UAEJJF Qualification System. The ranking is the most fair way of awarding the effort and the talent of each athlete that signs up to one of the UAEJJF tournaments throughout the year. It is also a great incentive for more and more athletes to take part in as many events as they can. The next pages will explain how the ranking works and the new changes. Have a good read, put on your gi and go out there to add points right away.
How does the ranking work and what are the main changes?
The ranking period will be in general for 24 months. The Seven (7) best results during next season (12 months’ period) will count + one extra (8th) result from the Continental Pro + the result of Abu Dhabi World Professional Championship, starting from 1st May 2019. The points for each individual tournament will expire as follows: • From May 1st, 2019 to April 30th, 2020 the points will count 100%. • After May 1st, 2020 the points will be reduced to 50%. • After May 1st, 2020 the points will be reduced to 0 and not count anymore. The dividing line is the first week of May 2020. Example: If tournament is held in first week of May 2019, the points are reduced to half on the first week on May 2020 and expired in the first week of May 2021.
How to add points in the ranking?
You add points in the ranking by at least participating in one of the events of the UAEJJF calendar (the current calendar started on May 1, 2019 and ends on April 30, 2020). There are six kinds of events in terms of how many points you’ll get: ADWPJJC; Abu Dhabi Grand Slam; Continental Pro; National Pro; International Pro; Regional Tournament.
Here are the number of points athletes will earn on each event depending on their performance.
Number 17 - 2019
29
Here are a few examples of how to count an athlete’s points.
How many rankings are there?
The UAEJJF has divided the ranking in several categories. You can say that the two most important are male adult black belt and female adult brown/black belt. Each belt has its own ranking starting with white belts. You also have a ranking in the male master division, an academy ranking, continental and country rankings. There are also No-Gi rankings. For what else is the ranking used for by the UAEJJF? The Federation will use the ranking to decide your position on the bracket of the ADWPJJC. It will also use the ranking to invite athletes to compete in the ADWPJJC. In addition the ranking will be used to select fighters for the new Abu Dhabi King of Mats through Continental Ranking and Grand Slam Placements. What else do you need to know about the ranking? Yes. There are a few details you need to know about the ranking. If you are alone in a division, you won’t earn points in the ranking. If you change belts during the season, you lose the points from the previous belt. The same happens if you change age divisions during the calendar. Due to the academies ranking, the UAEJJF will not change an athlete’s team during the same season. Another features to be implemented are that athletes will get points for not only placements, but also for each matches won. For example, athletes can get a certain point for a gold medal, but will also earn extra points for each win. So if athletes win a really large bracket that could lead award more points than smaller brackets. On top on that athletes will be awarded even extra
30
points for different type of wins, for example winning by advantage or by submissions. Are there any more novelties in the ranking for the 20192020 season? In case of equality of total RANK points, the higher ranking will be decided by: 1. The highest sum of the current points from World Pro. 2. The highest sum of the current points from all Grand Slams. 3. The highest sum of the current points from all Continental Pro, followed by National Pro, International Pro and Regional Championships. 4. The highest current points from one single event, then, if needed, the second highest, and so on. 5. If the competitors are still equal the decision will be taken by the number of matches done by the fighter through the season, followed by the fastest submission(s) or who made more points during the matches in case of World Pro Qualification. Hard Fought Victory By far the weight class with the most fierce rivalry between the two finalists. João Gabriel Sousa made it to the final through the hard way. He first finished Cleber Fernandes with a choke from the back to meet up with João Miyao in the semifinals. ABU DHABI KING OF MATS Lightweight
Man on a Mission In a campaign filled with faith and determination, Paulo Miyao runs through the toughest of oppositions to confirm his position at the top of the Abu Dhabi King of Mats lightweight bracket Words: Ivan Trindade | Images: Ane Nunes, Ivan Trindade
As soon as the referees raised their arms to point out the Abu Dhabi King of Mats Lightweight champion, on March 10, at the Copper Box Arena, Paulo Miyao burst into tears. The final against American Isaac Doederlein was nothing short of an all out war. The third time they had competed against each other on that weekend alone. All three matches were as close as they could be. Paulo had gone way past his limit. Even so, his disposition stayed intact: “Hallo pain, it’s me! How can I help you? Let me take care of you!, he wrote about his battles in London. The Brazilian had just fought six of the toughest battles in his glorious career to get to that point. In the end, all the effort and sacrifice was just too overwhelming for him. He had reached his breaking point and the tears were the sign that the effort was massive. Crowned, Miyao had only humbleness and desire to keep on fighting inside him: “Impermanence is common to all things on this Earth. It helps you to reduce your suffering and teaches you to be happy,” wrote Miyao on his social media channels. In the following pages, you will be able to relive the thrills of that day in England.

Mohammed Al Hosani Jiu-Jitsu Analyst/Commentator
Who will be Crowned 2019 Champion? The 2018-2019 season could very well be the most exciting yet with the season titles still up for grabs in the Adult and Master 1 Black Belt Categories Another UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) season comes to an end. It’s the 4th season since the inception of the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Tour (ADWJJT) and its accompanied Rankings, an initiative that gave birth to seasonal competitions and rankings on par with other and more established sports such as the lucrative world of Formula One (F1). A season that consisted of 66 events all over the world, spanning every continent and encompassing all athletes vying for the top spot by the end of the season in April of each year. Now in its second decade, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship (ADWPJJC) continues its march towards another decade of excellence, innovation and professional competition. Let’s look at how thinks look so far when it comes to the rankings, starting with the Male Adult Black Belt Category. For the 1st time ever, we do have two teammates vying for the top spot at the end of April, ZR Team Association’s Joao Batista de Sousa (22 wins, 3 losses) and Diego Ramalho (24 wins, 4 losses), followed closely by local favorite and Commando Group standout, Ricardo Evangelista (14 wins, 1 loss) and Polish sensation Adam Wardzinski (21 wins, 3 losses) tied for 3rd place. That is a very interesting battle to end the season as all 4 athletes are competing in different weight classes, and nothing but a gold medal at the ADWPJJC should be their target if they want to cement their status as the best in the world. If I had to predict a winner, I would have to go with Joao Batista de Sousa, who had an incredible season feuding with Hiago George in 5 matches that ended in his favor (3-2) culminating in 5 total medals in the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour (ADGS) circuit. Gaining the top prize would also make him the lightest competitor to win it after 3 years of dominance by the heavier athletes. His teammate stands the biggest chance out of the 3 vying for the spot, but there will surely be a tough challenge from Evangelista and last season’s World No. 2, Wardzinski, who is the most consistent athlete in the UAEJJF rankings the past 2 seasons. In the Female Adult Brown/Black Belt Category, the battle is between World No. 1 and undefeated Gabrieli Pessanha (18
Number 17 - 2019
wins, no losses), the always consistent Mayssa Bastos (17 wins, 1 loss) and the UK’s Samantha Cook (20 wins, 5 losses). It would surprise everyone to see anyone but Pessanha taking the title this year, with an undefeated record and a staggering 5 gold medals in 5 ADGS events. She is the new star of the sport and this season could be her launching pad to a successful career in the sport as she has youth and experience on her side even though she is still a brown belt! On the other hand, it is hard to watch Mayssa miss out on the top spot for the second season in a row after coming so close both times, but then again, never say never. A win for her and a loss by Gabrieli could be the dramatic end the season needs as opposed to the previous season where the title picture for both Adult Males and Females was pretty much determined before the start of the ADWPJJC. I would also like to touch upon the Male Master 1 Black Belt Category where we could see another historical achievement via Igor Silva, last year’s World No. 1 in the Adult Black Belt Category. Silva and fellow teammate, Ricardo Evangelista, switched roles this season and we could see for the first time a former Adult champion come back to win the Master 1 category the next year. Can you imagine Silva winning Master 1 and Evangelista winning Adult? That would be something extraordinary for the UAEJJF Rankings and Commando Group. It seems like we will have to wait another season for someone to break the Brazilian dominance at the top of the rankings for the black belt categories. Samantha Cook and Adam Wardzinski are the only Non-Brazilian to, numerically, stand a chance to cause an upset for the top spot, but all stars would have to be aligned for them on the night. The next season will start a little over a month after the ADWPJJC, so there won’t be much time for a break for Jiu-Jitsu fans as the UAEJJF embarks on a new journey towards Moscow, the first leg of the ADGS in the 2019-2020 season. Another season that promises to go one step further in terms of their product’s superiority on the global stage. Stand Strong. The World is indeed, coming to Abu Dhabi!

All energy comes from the Core The importance of training the muscles in your mid-section for power and stability Words: Sophia McDermott*
During my years as a trainer and focusing on functional movement for athletes it has been one of my pet peeves to see athletes lift weights like bodybuilders and and then throw on a few sits ups at the end of the workout. I keep asking myself, how did it come about that the abdominal muscles are treated separately from all the other muscle groups? Abs are just thrown in at the end like some consolation prize to the workout. Ironically, for all performance athletes such as Jiu-Jitsu athletes the muscles that should be the main focus of any strength training workout are actually the muscles of the core! With a strong core and glutes everything else follows. Mainstream fitness where the standard strength training program involves using all the machines and lifting dumbbells and barbells such as bicep curls and pec dec has its place but not necessarily for performance athletes. Jiu-Jitsu just like judo and wrestling require a great deal of proprioception whereby the nervous system is finely tuned to each and every slight variable. Being able to maneuver your body while constantly stabilizing is essential in this sport. And this stability comes from the core. The major muscles of the core include the Transversus Abdominis, Multifidus, internal and external Obliques, Rectus Abdominis, Erector Spinae and Pelvic floor muscles. These muscles essentially stabilize the spine and pelvis. The power for pushing or pulling comes from our core that is taking the bulk of the weight, keeping stiff like a tree trunk, while our legs do the pushing (ie in sled runs) or our arms do the pulling. Without them, we would not be able to perform any thing with any force at best and at worst we would just flop over like a rag doll. Here are some fabulous exercises that focus on the different aspects of the core, in particular the abdominals. These are performed on a medicine or physio ball to help increase stability and proprioception so that your body becomes more fine tuned to all the variables of Jiu-Jitsu movement. It is best to incorporate these exercises in a circuit format in your workouts rather than leaving them to do last. The core is one of the most important muscle groups for athletes because the core is where the power for pushing and pulling stems from. The core is also essential to stabilization and balance so all workouts consist of exercises that work the core. Enjoy these fun and challenge exercises in your workout routine and reap the rewards on the mat. 116
Medicine Ball Rollouts on Knees or Feet Rollouts on the feet are a more challenging version since the lever is longer and there is more stability required through the core to maintain that straight shape (but you can do it on your knees if it’s easier for you). Start on your feet with the ball on your forearms and your arms tucked into your chest. Keep a straight shape from your head to your feet and keep your transverse abs braced the entire time to make sure your spine is supported. Avoid a ‘banana back’ as you roll the ball out and avoid sticking your butt out as you roll the ball back in. If you are experiencing ‘banana back’ when rolling the ball out, start with small movements and only roll the ball out a little way, maintaining a straight shape through the core. Aim for 15 repetitions.
Medicine Ball Knees to Chest This is a very good exercise to work the shoulders and upper back stabilizers, as well as the transverse abs and hip flexors. Start by placing hands on the floor and prop your feet up on the ball. Keeping a straight shape with abs braced, roll the ball in so that your knees are in line with your chest. Make sure to crunch the ball in to engage your abs. Don’t just let your knees point to the floor. Make sure that your shoulders are in line with your wrists at all times and that your upper body remains static. Aim for 15 repetitions.

Medicine Ball Russian Twists This exercise engages the obliques which are very important for any twisting motion. By keeping hips propped up, this exercise works the glutes and pelvis. Prop yourself on the ball where your upper back is supported on the ball. Squeeze your glutes so that your hips always stay up and in line with your chest. Keep your arms up in line with your chest. Maintaining stability through the lower body with the hips up, roll your upper body sideways on the ball. Then roll towards the other side so that you are on your side facing the other way, still with hips facing up. Aim for 10 repetitions each side.
Medicine Ball crunches with hips up This is a much more fun and challenging way to perform crunches. Just like the previous exercise they work the glutes and pelvic complex. It is essential to keep your hips up to keep your abs and glutes activated throughout the entire exercise. Just like the previous exercise, start off by propping yourself on the ball where your upper back is supported on the ball. Squeeze your glutes so that your hips always stay up and in line with your chest. Bring your arms in front of your chest and perform a small movement of raising shoulders off the ball, but do not let your hips drop. Aim to do 20 repetitions.
