Jiu-Jitsu World
The Chairman of the United Arab Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation, His Excellency Abdulmunam Al Hashemi shares his views on the groundbreaking work that is being done by the Federation to incentive the sport in the country and around the world. Following the vision and intelligent leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAEJJF is working tirelessly for a greater future for Jiu-Jitsu.
JIU-JITSU WORLD: The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has been working hard to develop the sport both in the UAE and abroad. What are the Federation’s main achievements so far? Chairman Abdulmunam Al Hashemi: I The Federation’s main achievements can be summarized as follows: 1) Raising awareness and promoting the culture of Jiu-Jitsu as the number of players in the UAE exceeded 70,000 in the last five years. 2) Preparing and qualifying champions on international levels. In this regard, the UAE is currently ranked 1st in male competitions in Asia, with remarkable achievements in various international championships. 3) Organizing world class championships such as Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour and International and continental qualifiers for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. 4) Gaining the trust of international organizations to make Abu Dhabi home to the headquarters of the International Federation and the Asian Union. 5) Successfully qualifying Emirati professionals to assume positions at international organizations and perform their tasks with optimal professionalism and efficiency. Jiu-Jitsu has been witnessing growing participation in Olympic-related events. Are we going to see Jiu-Jitsu as a part of the Olympics? How far are we from reaching this milestone? The UAEJJF is working closely and relentlessly with the JJAU and the Ju-Jitsu International Federation to prepare a comprehensive and persuasive file to be presented to the International Olympic Committee in order to obtain the IOC’s Board approval of adding Jiu-Jitsu to the Olympic agenda, as the sport has strong presence in more than 160 countries worldwide where players compete in local, intercontinental and international championships for male and female, youth and Paralympic players. As the 10th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship nears, what is your evaluation of the Championship’s development in the last decade? The Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship has seen remarkable development in the last decade. Despite the strong start and great support, the number of Championship’s participants did not exceed 400 players. But with relentless work and dedication, the number of participants reached 7000, and the Championship developed from a 2-day event into a 14-day event. In the beginning, 10 local black belts participated in the Championship, but this number has increased to 600.
Number 07 - 2018
Furthermore, the number of followers and viewer base has increased from 50,000 to more than one billion across TV channels and social media platforms, and the value of prizes is now in millions. The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship has cemented its prestigious position in the international Jiu-Jitsu agenda, achieving remarkable development from one edition to another, and the categories now include adult males and females, youth and para-athlete categories. In addition to Jiu-Jitsu competitions, the Championship has become a platform for recreational activities, social awareness and cultural initiatives and sports, technical and educational workshops. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation always has ambitious plans for the future. Can you share with us the Federation’s short-term and long-term plans and objectives? Our short-term objectives are preserving and building on the current success, contributing to the UAE’s vision towards building a strong generation, preparing and qualifying competitive champions to raise the UAE’s flag in international events and expanding the scope of the international championships organized in UAE. Our longterm objective is to be ranked 1st in the world in line with our leadership’s vision. Abu Dhabi has become the capital of Jiu-Jitsu. How important has been the support extended by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed throughout the last decade? We could never have achieved our objectives without the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Depute Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces. His Highness has always been a source of inspiration for us and we are lucky to have him on our side. For every single Jiu-Jitsu player in UAE, the ultimate honor has always been meeting His Highness after winning a local, intercontinental or international championship.

Samantha Cook is not your regular Jiu-Jitsu story. She did not start training as a child or a teenager. The gentle art only entered her life at the late age of 21 years old. Soon after, she was already competing and being successful on the mats. In the next pages, Cook talks about her Jiu-Jitsu journey, the importance of role models for the development of more female talent on the mats and also shares her tips for a better performance. JIU-JITSU WORLD: What can you tell us about how you started training Jiu-Jitsu? Samantha Cook: I started training Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 21 after changing my path. I previously competed nationally in British Showjumping and I felt that this time in my life had come to an end. A friend of mine who practiced MMA introduced to me the world of Jiu-Jitsu. I found myself being successful in competition at the beginning and continued to pursue a full time athletic career in 2014 when I moved to London. I recently returned to work full time in 2017 but still continue to compete internationally at the highest level.
The English black belt put the final touches on th choke to win gold in Abu Dhabi
Who were the biggest influences in your career on the mats until becoming a black belt? My biggest influences were and still continue to be black belts Michelle Nicolini and Janni Larsen. Michelle for her positive attitude and smiling nature and Janni for teaching me her best game. I spent a fair amount of time in Copenhagen training with Janni who had just become European, World and Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion all in one year. If you had to pick three aspects of your life on the mats that were important for your success, what would they be? Understanding your body type and what styles of Jiu-Jitsu work well for you. Not every style of Jiu-Jitsu works for every body type, study those who’s games are similar to yours. For me I like a dynamic open guard game and a dominant top game, I like to see the gaps and be ready to capitalize on them. Understanding why something works well in Jiu-Jitsu. Don’t just learn the moves, understand why that move can be successful- I believe this helps you to adapt the positions accordingly from a deeper understanding and expose more options. A decent training partner, someone as enthusiastic as you to drill techniques with until it’s ingrained in your subconscious. Understanding and repetition is the key. The participation of women in the Jiu-Jitsu competition circuit has been growing with

every season. Do you think female black belts play a role on inspiring young girls to train? Absolutely! I don’t think female athletes become black belts to become role models- it’s a bi-product of success. This creates the best kind of role model as it demonstrates that with perseverance and consistency, anything is possible. I am from the small but mighty United Kingdom, I am 30 years old and I train part time in the evenings now.... I am an Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Champion competing against girls much younger than me who train full time, if that doesn’t inspire women and girls to train and compete Im not sure what will. You had an awesome performance at the Grand Slam Abu Dhabi. What tips can you give athletes that are just starting on how to prepare right and perform well on a tournament. The best tips are from my personal experience, no one gets it right first time, the more you compete the more your body
22
and mind get used to performing under pressure. Believe in yourself, you trained hard for this, your body reacts without you thinking about it- trust it will start to do what it needs to with time. Figure out a warm up that prepares you to fight, some people do a little stretch and they are good to go, for me personally I practically have my first round spar as my warm upthat way I know my mind and body are ready to react fast! You have been active in the UAEJJF circuit. How important it is for Jiu-Jitsu to have a professional environment that awards athletes for their dedication and results? This is such a huge step for our sport! Finally Jiu-Jitsu is receiving the recognition it deserves. This not only rewards the best athletes in their divisions but encourages many more people to take up Jiu-Jitsu and compete. Overall this creates a positive environment for Jiu-Jitsu to flourish.

The King of Mats is born with the purpose of highlighting the great fighters that showcased their talents at the ADWPJJC since its first edition in 2009. The event will host its first edition in Abu Dhabi, but the event is intended to travel around the world, bringing some of the best competitors in the world to some of the most important cities of the planet.

Jiu-Jitsu World
The 2017/2018 season brings a few novelties regarding the annual athletes ranking. For the present season, the UAEJJF will award 200 travel packages for the top competitors in each continent. Therefore, more than ever the ranking is the pathway to the 2018 Abu Dhabi World Professional JiuJitsu Championship as well as the big money prizes for the best athletes at the end of the season. The UAEJJF is also adding prizes for the best adult male black belts in each of the six continents, a way to make more and more athletes compete in regional events. Competitors have huge incentives to take part in as many events as they can. The next pages will explain how the ranking works. Have a good read, put on your gi and go out there to add points right away.
How to add points in the ranking?
You add points in the ranking by at least participating in one of the events of the UAEJJF calendar (the current calendar started on May 1, 2017 and ends on April 30, 2018). There are six kinds of events in terms of how many points you’ll get: 1 - ADWPJJC – 6 stars; 2 - Abu Dhabi Grand Slam – 5 stars; 3 - Continental Pro – 4 stars; 4 - National Pro – 3 stars; 5 - International Pro – 2 stars; 6 - Regional Tournament – 1 star. Here are the number of points athletes will earn on each event depending on their performance.
Here are a few examples of how to count an athlete’s points.
How many rankings are there?
The UAEJJF has divided the ranking in the following categories: Adult Division
- Best International Male Black Belt of the year - Best Continental Male Black Belt of The year: Asia, Europe, South America, North America, Africa, Oceania - Best International Female Brown/Black belt of the Year - Best International Rookie of the year (Brown Belt) Master Division
- Best International Male Black belt of the Year (Master 1) Academies
- Best International Academy of the year

Who gets the travel packages to compete at the 2018 ADWPJJC? The Federation will award 200 travel packages for the top athletes of over 60 countries in each continent. Only two athletes per country inside each continent will get travel packages. The cut off date to add points for this season is March 12. Here are the packages to be awarded to each continent in each age/belt division. What are the prizes for ranking leaders? After all the effort, it is natural that ranking leaders at the end of the season receive proper rewards. The male adult black belt division alone will award US$70,000, while the female brown/black belt division will award US$18,000. That’s the same amount reserved for the male adult brown belt ranking leaders and the master 1 male black belt division. The tables here show the main prizes. Do only athletes in the UAEJJF ranking can compete in the 2018 ADWPJJC? No. The 2018 ADWPJJC is open to all athletes who are UAEJJF members. What else do I need to know about the UAEJJF ranking? If a fighter made the weight for their division and is alone in their bracket they will be moved to a heavier division or higher belt. Points will be credited when there’s a no-show after the bracket is published and an athlete have no matches. Divisions with two players will run normally and fighters won’t be moved to heavier/higher division. Whenever belt divisions are merged, the points will be credited according to the fighter current belt. Ranking points will not be transferred from one belt rank to the next one. Raking points will not be transferred from one age division to another. If a fighter changes nationality during a season or qualification period they will lose all points in the UAEJJF World Rank.

Igor Silva, 33 years old, is one of the most active athletes on the 2017-2018 UAEJJF season. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the black belt under Muzio de Angelis started training JiuJitsu to learn a martial art and improve his physical condition.
himself on the mat competing in various tournaments. In 2006, he received from the hand of his Professor De Angelis the black belt on the podium of a competition after winning the gold medal in his division.
He’s the current #1 of the UAEJJF adult male black belt ranking with 1600 points conquered with a strong and active game which makes him one of the most prominent names in the current worldwide competition scenario.
Currently he competes under Command Group, in Abu Dhabi, and if you want to know his strategy to compete against any experienced athlete just pay attention to this tip: “I’m not curious about fights against any athlete who I had watched fighting before. However, if one day I know that I’ll be in a match against someone like this I’ll try to train with this person before (laughs).”
At the super-heavyweight division (under 110kg/ 224lbs), Igor Silva faces opponents who force him to be prepared for everything on the mat. “There is not a specific type of competitor who I prefer to fight. I try not to think about a single athlete once Jiu-Jitsu makes us face several opponents in a competition.” Since Igor started Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager, his talent was observed and encouraged by his Master and he tested

Lifestyle for me is… to be able to work with what you love. I chose Jiu-Jitsu as a hobby and now it’s my profession. I prefer to follow a diet… without restrictions but I don’t have problems when I need to loose weight for a specific competition. I learned from my Master… Muzio de Angelis since I was a kid to never be afraid of any opponent. A talent few people know about me is… that I used to play very good Football (soccer). It’s been so long since I last played that I think I may have forgotten (laughs).”
When I’m not rolling… I like to spend my time with my family.
A title that I want to conquer is… All of those still missing, but I’m glad for all that I have now.
From the medals I have conquered… The
Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro in 2016 showed me that my No-Gi performance was ion point for someone who had trained only in the gi. This cheered me up for the rest of the season.
Outside the mat my great partner is… My wife and son.
In 10 years I want to be… Fighting!

MAYSSA BY MAYSSA… Lifestyle for me is… Jiu-Jitsu. I prefer a diet… that’s easy to follow. I learned from my Masters and Professors… how to work hard and how to be a good person.
When I’m not rolling… I’m relaxing. A title that I want to conquer is…
all of those I go to dispute. Mayssa Caldas Pereira Bastos, 20 years old, is a young brown belt under Master Julio Cesar Pereira (GF Team). She is starting to stand out in competitions in the UAEJJF, dominating the 49kg division. Despite being a brown belt, Mayssa fear nothing and has been able to defeat black belt opponents in several occasions. Mayssa’s success on the mats, including a win at the 2017 ADWPJJC and also on several Abu Dhabi Grand Slam events, is showing on the UAEJJF ranking. She’s the current #2 in the Female Adult Brown/Black category with 1120 points. She has all the tools to reach the end of the season on the top. Jiu-Jitsu is a family matter for Mayssa. She started training following her old brother: “I began training because my old brother was already training. My father also followed him and suggested me to try it. I gave it a try and never stopped.”
From the medals I have conquered… the World Professional
Jiu-Jitsu Championship on 2017 among the black belt athletes. It was exciting and shows me that with hard work we can go wherever we want.
In 10 years I want to be…
accomplished in both professional and personal fields in my life.
On the mats, Mayssa’s game has two main characteristics – coolness and the pursue of the submission. She loves to take her opponents backs and finish with bow and arrow chokes. It doesn’t matter what opponent she faces, Mayssa always goes after the finish. Lineage Mitsuyo Maeda – Luiz França – Oswaldo Fadda – Monir Salomão – Julio Cesar Pereira – Mayssa Bastos
