“Transforming African American communities, one child at a time.

JackandJillfoundation.org

Five Decades of Philanthropy 1968: Jack and Jill of America Foundation is incorporated and comes to life at the National Convention of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. in Washington, DC

1969-1978: The Foundation Board

Who We Are Mission

To address issues affecting African American children and families, by investing in programs and services that create a solid foundation for children to thrive long term.

Vision

Transform African American communities, one child at a time.

Priorities African American Families Our Foundation partners with agencies who create strong family connections, and gain resources for nurturing health and successful children. As of 2013, 67% of African American children raised in single parent homes, compared to 25% of whites and 42% of Hispanics. And, 36% of African American children (aged 0-17) live in food-insecure households compared with 15% white and 29% Hispanic.

Education Our focus on early childhood education, STEM, and building college ready students. The 47% national graduation rate for African American males is nearly 28% lower than for white males. Most schools with black majority enrollments do not have libraries, an adequate supply of textbooks and computers, art and music programs and science labs. There are also race gaps in the quality of experience in early education which is the foundation for school success.

Health and Wellness The importance of investing in physical health includes heart health and mental health for our communities. Health disparities between African Americans and other racial and ethnic populations are striking and apparent in life expectancy, death rates, infant mortality, and other measures of health status and risk conditions and behaviors.

larger

Only 4 percent of blacks age 25 or older in 1962 had a college degree, while 10 percent of whites did. In 2012, 21 percent of blacks had a college degree and 31 percent of whites did, meaning the gap

grew from 6 percentage points to 10 percentage points. [https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/black-white-highereducation-gap-larger-today-50-years-ago]

Jack and Jill Foundation 2017-18 Impact Report

Letter from

Foundation President & Executive Director The Foundation supports grants in Three Philanthropic Focus Areas and none of this could be done without your support, THANK YOU! Education Jack and Jill of America Foundation is celebrating 50 years and it is greatly attributed to Jack and Jill members. Today, the legacy of Jack and Jill Foundation continues to be true. According to U.S. News and World Report and more than 60 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, school systems in the United States are separate and unequal. By 2022, the number of Hispanic students in public elementary and secondary schools is projected to grow 33% and the number of multi-racial students is expected to grow 44%. “U.S. Education Still Separate and Unequal” Lindsey Cook, Data Editor

of every institution and individual that touches that young person’s life. The cost of maintaining a healthy diet for a family is out of reach for many African American families, especially those living in vulnerable communities. • $49,000 was invested in our health fairs throughout the country • 6,600 children attended a health-related workshop or healthy eating class to understand the importance of a healthy diet

Strong Families – It Takes a Village

Health/Wellness

Our black children are faced with challenges every day. These challenges range from racism and academic achievement to family problems and lack of role models. But one of the most overlooked challenges facing today’s young African Americans is their selfesteem. • $60,000 was invested in building stronger families in Our Village Grants • 1,800 children were reached and given resources to face every day challenges

Today, death rates for African Americans remain 40% higher than for whites. 1960, due to the lack of healthy choices. Lack of healthy choices and opportunities for children. Children’s health must be the responsibility

In short, we are amazed, inspired and grateful for your generosity and the lives that your gift has touched. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you for your momentous support this year.

Our Programs National Projects Silence the Shame Mental Health tour dates to speak to youth and peel back the layers of shame and stigma as it relates to mental health. With a generous $50,000 grant from Jack and Jill of America Foundation, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated successfully partnered with the Hip-Hop Professional Foundation, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Jack and Jill of America chapters across the country to change the conversation around mental health. The national Silence the Shame Teen Mental Health Tour was designed to begin the important discussion about mental health and dispel the stigma

around seeking help and treatment for mental health challenges. The seven-city tour provided young people a platform to listen, learn and engage with health care professionals and their peers through panel discussions and group exercises.

Foundation Supports Children’s Defense Fund In the rural South, more than 1 in 4 children and nearly as many women live in poverty; the poverty rate is more than double for African-American and Latinos compared to their white counterparts. Foundation matched a $5,000 contribution from Alabama Power to support 100 children from across a 77 county region to attend the commemoration of the 2018 Children’s Crusade: The Power of Children in Birmingham, Alabama

challenge for many students and their families. Because of financial obstacles, the number of students who are unable to attend college is increasing and the effort to combat this barrier becomes much more momentous. Thanks to this year’s funding, Jack and Jill of America Foundation has made it possible for these ambitious and talented students to minimize their financial barriers to go “to and through” college.
