What's Important? I'm regularly searching for great insight to offer others- in life, ministry, even in these newsletter articles. Yet, I find myself repeatedly coming back to the ONE THING that we all struggle with: PRIDE. There is a reason Jesus summed up the Law and the Prophets (the entire OT) with 2 commands: Love God with everything and love your neighbor as yourself (Matt. 22:37-40). He was trying to help us see that everything God longs for us to do is outside of ourselves. No part of this "new" command (John 13:34-35) had anything to do with bettering self, but had EVERYTHING to do with loving others.

"Everything God longs for us to do is outside of ourselves"

I'm sure you parents can understand this from the perspective of loving your child and being willing to do ANYTHING for them! But Scripture is calling us to this kind of love and sacrifice for our brothers and sisters in Christ- all of them- not just our blood relatives. We know this and we have heard this from the pulpit many times. So many in fact, that a number of you have already stopped reading... But imagine this...

Trunk or Treat at a GLANCE...

You just finished a long day of school or work and finally get home after sports practices, meetings, etc. and you're ready to turn your brain off for a few moments of peace when THAT person calls or texts you in DIRE NEED. You know the person... they're ALWAYS in need of something... attention mostly. What do you do? We all know the answer, but is that what we do? What's the limit to our serving and helping others? Is there one?

Suffering Servant This is a sub-title given in Isaiah 53 before Jesus was even born. Isaiah prophesied that one would come in flesh and bear the punishment we deserved for our sin. In the Gospels we see the story of Christ and how He repeatedly put others before Himself. In Matthew He explains that "The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matt. 23:11-12). A few short chapters later, Jesus exemplifies this statement for His disciples and takes the lowest position possible, washing their feet. This is JESUS, GOD INCARNATE, and He is washing feet!? Why then do we get so consumed with this world and what "we deserve" or the thing we have to have? Scripture tells us it's pride. The Greatest Commandment was first mentioned in Deuteronomy 6- called the SHEMA. What I love about the passage is that God tells them this "command" needs to be EVERYWHERE- taught to your kids, talked about amongst friends, written on your hands and all over your house! God knows we are forgetful. God knows that we all have some form of A.D.D. and we will get side-tracked by the "more important" every day of our lives. My prayer for you and for me is that we submit to this command DAILY and serve one another DAILY and remind one another DAILY that God is all that matters and our lives are a striving to repay the debt of love that Jesus paid on the cross for us gladly.

Thanks to all those that came out and endured the incredible, 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat! We had a GREAT/WET time and it was an awesome opportunity to serve the community and be Jesus to some kids and families! Nice work on your creative trunks :)

It's simple, but not easy.
