EXPERIENCES

We have gathered some great experiences for you to enjoy and get to know better the Algarve region.

SEVEN HANGING VALLEYS HIKING ROUTE This Route was voted "Europe's Best Hiking Destination" in a ranking promoted by European Best Destinations, which was voted by more than 28,000 travelers from 153 countries. The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys) is one of the most scenic hiking routes of the Algarve. This fairly challenging hike trail of 11.5km (round trip) follows the stunning coastline between Vale de Centianes (Carvoeiro) in the west and the Praia da Marinha to the east, placing it ahead of natural tourist attractions in countries like Norway, England, France or Spain. This is a dramatic coastline formed of massive limestone cliffs that have been savagely eroded to create deep sea caves, perilous sink holes and majestic sea arches. Within the golden cliffs, winter streams have carved out wide valleys (the “hanging Valleys), in which secluded beaches are sheltered from the power of the ocean.

DONA FILIPA

CURIOSITIES WHY THE NAME DONA FILIPA FOR THE HOTEL? The Dona Filipa Hotel was built by Trusthouse Forte in 1968, with the work of the English architect Peter Darvall. D. Filipa de Lencastre played an important role in preserving the Portuguese-English alliances. It was during the reign of Master of Avis that the oldest existing agreement was signed: the Treaty of Windsor, May 9, 1386. For this reason, when we talk about the history of Dom João and Dona Filipa, we will have to tell also the story of the relation between Portugal and England. The Dona Filipa Hotel stands out in honor of this relation, as a privileged spot for holidays for the English families, in an idyllic setting, facing the sea and with sunny days.

WHY DO WE HAVE THE CITY OF OPORTO ON A PAINTING AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE HOTEL? Filipa de Lencastre (Philippa of Lancaster), was an English princess of the House of Lancaster, who became the Queen consort of Portugal by getting married with the king D. João I. The wedding was celebrated in 1387, in the city of Oporto, as part of the agreement within the scope of the LusoEnglish alliance against the France-Castile alliance. The civil wedding was on the 2nd of February, but the wedding at the Cathedral of Porto was only on the 14th of February. This is the same date for the opening of the Hotel Dona Filipa, 52 years ago.

DONA FILIPA

CURIOSITIES WHO IS DOM DUARTE? The second restaurant of the Hotel, still in the process of renovation, is named Dom Duarte in honor of one of the sons of D. Filipa, the Writer. In the renovated rooms and suites of the hotel, you will also find a lamp that symbolizes the feather with which D. Duarte wrote his poetry and history. Can you find it?

"

WHY THE NAME KAMAL? Named for an ancient Arabian instrument of celestial navigation, the Kamal was integral to the great Portuguese voyages of discovery... including those made by D. Henrique, son of our hotel’s namesake, Dona Filipa. Its use paved the way for the Age of Discovery itself, and led to the import of many of the ingredients, spices and flavours associated with Portuguese cuisine today; flavours you will experience for yourself, right here at Kamal. Fittingly, the name also has the literal meaning of perfection, balance and peace.
