FROM THE EDITOR
The year is almost over. In only a matter of days I will be handing over the publication to next year’s editors. I’m going to cry. This staff has become my family. The J-Lab is my home away from home. We’ve been through so much together: missed deadlines, boy drama, celebrations, hard days, running out of coffee, and so much more. I cannot put into words how proud I am of my staff and the publications we have produced. I have been told by many that this is the best publication Lee’s Summit High School has seen in years. And I couldn’t agree more. Over the course of the year, I have watched my staff grow. It is incredible to think about how far everyone has come, and as a result, how far our publication has as well. This past Wednesday, we attended Journalism Day at the University of Missouri in Columbia. This event is put on by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association and brings hundreds of young journalists together from across the state to celebrate their achievements. There was not a single category in which Lee’s Summit High School was not celebrated. Overall we took home 22 awards. Just about everything we entered placed. Not only that, but four of my staff members received Show-Me Awards, the highest award given. Many more received Superiors, the second highest. On top of that, two of my staff members placed in the Write-Off in which around 400 students competed. I am one proud mama.A proud mama whose eyes are brimming with tears. The year is wrapping up. Final decisions are being made. Next week I pass the torch, the class splits in two, and my focus turns to the Senior Issue. Next year’s staff steps up to the plate and mama bird is left in the nest. I know, I know. Too many mother analogies. I am going to miss my staff. They are truly a large part of my life. Of course, I plan to visit as much as possible. Actually, I plan to visit for the next three years. I need to watch my freshmen grow up. I can’t wait to see what this publication will become. You guys have so much potential. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Challenge yourselves. And invite me to any parties you have.

A Very Busy Bee Ideas buzz around her head as ideas and words come together to form spectacular requiems
Bees are one of nature’s hardest workers. Each individual bee has a specific job they were born to do for the good of the hive. As humans we each have unique talents that benefit our world as well. Jordan Hoffman is a very busy girl with many extraordinary talents.
Jordan Hauffman “I would like to encourage everyone to believe in their own talents, so they can become the best that they can be,” sophomore Jordan Hoffman said.
“My average week is usually really busy I enjoy going to church on Sundays. On Mondays I participate in Preludium for two hours. On Wednesdays I have voice lessons. I try to make sure I am enjoying everything and living in the moment. Next year I am going to pursue the IB diploma,” sophomore Jordan Hoffman said. Hoffman is a young, talented musician and has gotten many opportunities to let her talent shine. “I have a CD of original music named Jericho and it is available on iTunes. I think of all my accomplishments this has been the most exciting to see it develop. I hope I can inspire people and bring them hope in their lives with my music,” Hoffman said. All of Hoffman’s music is available on her website jordangabriella.com. She has had a passion for music since a young age and has been blessed to see her passion grow and bloom. “I have been writing music since seventh grade and started writing choral pieces in eighth grade, and so far I have written five choral pieces and writing music is something I’d love to do all my life,” Hoffman said. Songwriting is an extraordinary talent that not many people possess. It takes higher order thinking and great inspiration. “I write songs about people that are special to me and experiences that I have had or scriptures. Most of my songs are inspirational or center around a message of empowerment for people my age. My inspiration comes definitely comes from Christ. I write about how I see God and where I see God at work around me,” Hoffman said. Hoffman wrote a beautiful choral piece for fellow sophomore Laura Merwin who was diagnosed with leukemia and has inspired many with her never fading courage. “At pre contest concert the preludium choir sang a song that I wrote that is dedicated to Laura. I wrote that song last summer while I was keeping
Laura in my prayers. She is just such an inspiration and her courage is so inspiring that I was really excited when finished writing the song called Sunbeam. I gave this song to Mr. Sullivan and he accepted it for our choir to sing,” Hoffman said. Hoffman’s little sister, Sophia, is also very talented and has followed in her little sister’s footsteps. “My sister, Sophia, is such a sweet and brilliant young girl and she was on the Ellen show because she tied for first in the Jackson county spelling bee,” Hoffman said. Hoffman has her own amazing spelling bee experience and has had great success at the national level. “I have been participating in spelling bees from the fourth to eighth grade and I was in the in the national spelling bee for three years and tied for eighth in eighth grade. When I made the finals of the national spelling bee It was just such an incredible experience and I was just enjoying the ride for every second by that point. I wasn’t nervous because I knew I had done my best and I had peace with my outcome,” Hoffman said To be able to go to the national spelling bee takes a lot of dedication and hard work and an intense knowledge of words. “There is so much work and preparation that goes into it. To prepare I like to study word patterns and the language of origin and study how words are constructed. The people who win the spelling bee usually memorize the dictionary, but I was also busy at that time too busy with my music and I didn’t want to give that up,” Hoffman said. For bees to survive, they have to be well-oiled machines that work to their breaking point. Hoffman though makes bees look like they should be reclining on Lazyboys with a bag of chips with how hard she works and all the time she puts into her talents. 07 NOW HI+LIFE JLABMAG.COM

words clash, mages cast their vicious spells, and dashing thieves maneuver through the woods searching for their next victim. The Elder Scrolls Online is the next
installment in Bethesda Studios’ smash hit series: The Elder Scrolls. However, this chapter is unlike anything fans have ever seen before. The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG, which stands for Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game. Players will be set in the fictional world of Tamriel. The world is under peril, and it is up to players to put an end to the evil Prince Molag Bal’s tyranny. The Prince takes advantage of the political turmoil in Tamriel and opens a portal with the hopes of transporting all of Tamriel into his realm: Coldharbour. The key to Elder Scrolls Online is customization. It all begins with choosing a character. The game provides different races to choose from, each with particular skills that are primarily strong for that race. After the player is finished making the tough decision of which race to play as, they can then design their character to look however way they please. Once this is completed, the player JLABMAG.COM HI+LIFE BEAT 08
is immersed into Tamriel, and is ready to begin their astonishing journey. The biggest element to The Elder Scrolls Online is that it is an online only game. In every Elder Scrolls game prior, the player was bound to completing quests on their own, with occasional help from computer-controlled allies. Now, players can play along side their friends, completing quests and raging huge battles against other players. Since the beginning, The Elder Scrolls brand has been tied with outstanding nobility. Players really do fall in love with this series instantly and entirely. Released in late 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, was both a giant commercial as well as critical accomplishment. Praised for its seamless gameplay and phenomenal story-telling ability, Skyrim received near perfect scores in reviews and grossed over $450 million only a week after its release. Even with The Elder Scrolls Online’s fresh new take on the beloved series, it is expected to be well received by critics and fans alike. The Elder Scrolls Online will be available for purchase for PC on Apr 4. Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions of the game are to follow sometime this June.

Videogames are a widespread source of entertainment, more and more people are making money off of them each day.
Designed and Written by: Jude Spaulding Photos by: Makenna Nickens
People have always criticized gamers, accusing them of lacking any potential, talent, or real-world skills. Many assume that one could never turn a profit playing video games, those people are wrong. There are several ways one could turn playing video games into a substantial amount of money. The first and probably the most promising method is making let’s play videos or streaming on Twitch TV. Most professionals find themselves making quite a pretty penny, by just playing video games and recording it for hundreds or even thousands to see. One great example is James Varga, but people know him better as Phant0mL0rd. Varga has live streams on twitch and videos of him playing League of Legends on youtube. He makes money through twitch subscribers who pay a small fee to gain special privileges on his channel and advertisement on both his youtube and twitch channels. Another good way a lot of gamers make money is through selling accounts for a game or in-game items, such as weapons,
armor, visual upgrades, and even in-game currency to people for real world currency. Oddly enough, people are willing to buy these items from these people unwilling to put in the effort necessary to earn these items or statuses of those accounts. People have sold these things for as much as thousands, making large sums of money for just playing video games. However this method isn’t all good, it means spending hours trying to earn certain items rather than just enjoying the game. The most difficult method for making money while playing video games is participating in e-sports tournaments. These tournaments are where professionals come together to see who’s the best of the best
however; this isn’t their only motivation, typically prizes of monetary value are offered to the winners. While this method has an exponentially larger payout than the other two that have been mentioned, this is the least viable way to make anything because it is completely reliant on winning the tournament by defeating players who are quite possibly just as skilled as the competitor if not more so. They say if people do what they love the money will come and while this is not necessarily true for all things, video games can earn someone quite a bit of money. With careful planning someone can turn playing video games into a full blown career.

his action packed movie is based on what many know as the biblical story of Noah and the flood. He was a man chosen by God to build an ark because of an upcoming flood. This flood would destroy all evil in the world, and only the innocent would be spared and be put in the ark. There is a war started when people begin to realize Noah was telling the truth about the flood and they try to board the ark, but it is too late. This is the end of the world, as they know it. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, staring Russell Crowe as Noah, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, and Emma Watson. The film is rated PG-13 for violence. IMDB gave it 6.9/10 rating while saying it is action, adventure, and drama. Opening weekend it made about 4 million dollars and took number one on the charts. Although this is based off of the biblical story, some may say that they do get a little far-fetched in some scenes, but according to ratings, those far-fetched scenes do not change how people feel about the movie.

Divergent
ivergent takes place in future Chicago in a place where each member of society is divided into five groups called factions: Erudite, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Abnegation. When a person reaches the age of sixteen they will be given an aptitude test to determine which faction they are most like, then they go to a ceremony where they will choose the faction that they will join. Once a person has chosen a faction, there is no going back. When Beatrice Prior learns that she is divergent (meaning she is not like any of the factions), she must find her true identity and fight for her life. The first in a trilogy produced by Neil Burger, and based on the book series by Veronica Ross. International Movie Database gave it a 7.6/10 rating and classifying it as Action, Adventure, and Sci-Fi. The movie made over $56 million in opening weekend making it the most watched movie at the time.

Better than first love. Music sticks around.
Parade of Lights
Song: We’re the Kids Genre: Alt-electro, Shoegaze rock Lead Vocals/Guitar- Ryan Daly Drums- Anthony Improgo Bass Guitar/Backing vocals- Randy Schulte Keyboard/Backing Vocals- Michelle Ashley
Artist at a Glance: Parade of Lights’ first EP, Born to Live, Born to Love, was released in 2012. Before this milestone, Daly and Improgo recruited Schulte and Ashley, and together they honed their live performance sound. Once Astralwerks Records heard We’re the Kids, the band was signed. Since, they have toured across multiple western states, opening for Imagine Dragons, The Neighbourhood, and Fitz and the Tantrums. Artist Assessment: We’re the Kids’ intro emulates the music scene today, focusing on heavy electronic influence and airy vocals. With its chanting and annoyingly catchy chorus, Daly’s voice seems over powered by formable synths. The lyrics struggle to be heard while the song’s repetitive nature takes forefront over the front man, and originality crumbles as the song strains against its pop music ties. So like a peanut butter and banana sandwich, We’re the Kids is different, just not different enough. Star Sticker Rating: 2.5/5 Ancestry.music: So similar they could be related. Other artists one may enjoy:
MGMT- Song: Kids Wild Cub- Song: Thunder Clatter Blondfire- Song: Where the Kids Are
Childish Gambino Song: 3005 Genre: Rap/Hip-Hop
Artist at a Glance: Once cast member of the show Community,
Donald Glover now focuses on his music career as rapper, Childish Gambino. In 2008, he released his first record and since has put out multiple mixtapes, various underground works, and his newest album, Because the Internet, was dropped in 2013. Artist Assessment: 3005 opens with a fierce beat and strong hook. This, though, does not compensate for the song’s typical mantra: party, drink booze, and hang with homies. The chorus’ message slightly redeems, by throwing some positive light on the concepts of love, and the second verse is more creative with its cleverly pronounced rhymes: “We in here like Rogaine, or leave it like Cobain,” he sings. Sadly, this is not enough to refute the song’s lack of cohesiveness and inscrutable views. Towards the conclusion, with its feel of La La La by Naughty Boy, 3005 falls to comparison. All in all, Childish Gambino dropped a song, now he needs to organize the pieces. Star Sticker Rating: 3/5
Ancestry.music: So similar they could be related. Other artists one may enjoy: T.I. ft. Rihanna- Song: Live Your Life Drake- Song: Draft Day Eminem ft. Sia- Song: Beautiful Pain

Basketball Recap Taking a look back at the season.
Story by Payton Seymour, Photos by Annelise Hanshaw and Wendy Hayworth
2000.
This is not the number of times Miley Cyrus has taken pictures with her tongue dangling. Or the number of combined Kardashian / Jenner relationships. This number, 2000, represents the year in which the basketball team last won Districts. ‘From a fans’ point of view, I guess you could say we were the underdogs, but to us, we knew we had an advantage. It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season,” sophomore, Oliver Edwards said. ‘ It was definitely the craziest game I’ve ever played in” senior Grant Robbins added. The BSS game was as Robbins described. Crazy, they won the intensity battle 78-74. This basketball season was more than a success. The team accomplished things they have not done in fourteen years. Clearly, there have been some changes. Besides the awesome new coach Blake Little, our school spirit has also grown alongside the team’s success. “A lot of teams are losing a lot of people. We’re just getting one year older,” sophomore Blake Spellman said. We too, are losing great players like Bruce Bias, Grant Robbins, Jon Gilkey, Matt Glaze, and Landon Croteau. However were also gaining a more experienced Phil Propst, Marquawn Wilson, Nick Larkin, Jordan Bennett, Oliver Edwards, Blake Spellman, and Drew Lock. The team chemistry will also be even stronger. After interviewing some of the team, one thing is clear; they act and play as one unit on and off the court. When asked questions like “ Which of the main people did you look to he most?” They all responded with a slight laugh, and said “ there are no ‘main people’. ‘’Everyone is important, and everyone brings something different to the table.” State or not, the boys are champions.

Kara Cairnes gallops through life with her horse by her side
ho said following your dreams would be hard? Junior Kara Cairnes is proving to us that she never gives up on pursuing dreams of her own. Carines has been riding horses since she was ten years old. Cairnes’ father noticed that the stables near her were giving horseback riding lessons and right then he signed her up and she has been riding ever since. Not only is she riding to show her passion in horses, Cairnes also works in the stables and is a part time trainer. Cairnes’ said her very first show was her favorite. She remembers all of the games and the excitement. “It just felt like a very relaxed environment. My very first show was also the first year my mom let me wear lipstick so that was really cool,” Cairnes said. Cairnes’ favorite part about doing her first show were the outfits and getting dressed up. Cairnes’ mom is her biggest supporter in her horse shows. “My trainers will usually yell at me when something goes wrong at the show, but my mom is always there for me and she always gives me the positives of every show. When there is something I need, she is always there and she is at every one of my shows, she is definitely a show mom,” Cairnes said. Not all riders are going to be perfect; sooner or later they will have their little bumps. Carines shares an embarrassing moment that she has had in her years of riding. Four years ago, it had concluded the last day of the Missouri State Fair, which happened to be in the last class of
the weekend that usually lasts for four days. “That day my horse was really tired, the class consisted of you doing a solo in a big arena with the judges, all of a sudden my horse takes off running, and as she is running, she almost hits the judge. Apparently no one had shut the gates, so luckily two ladies were able to stop her and bring her back to the arena. It was pretty embarrassing but also very scary,” Cairnes said. Cairnes has many shows including Western Pleasure, Showman Ship and Holster classes, as well as Hunt Seat. There was a four year battle to finally convince her parents into getting her first horse. The one she got was leased to her, which means that she rented him from her trainer. Her trainer then talked to her parents and before she knew it, Cairnes had received him as a present for Christmas. When it comes to show season, Cairnes’ horse has the winter off and he is also getting older. However, she does not let anything keep her from riding. Every spring break she visits the stables and is always out riding when school is out she rides him about every day. Pursuing her dreams was a huge step and has gotten Cairnes very far. She is very excited for her next coming show this May.

A & Q
with KJ Dillard
KJ Dillard works to become a pro skateboarder Q: What is it like being a skateboarder? A: It’s a lifestyle, I guess. Q: What is your favorite thing about skateboarding? A: You can do your own thing without anyone telling you what to do, and it’s in my free time too. It’s not like any other organized sport or like a team sport because I practice whenever I feel like it; I don’t have a schedule or anything. I just enjoy it a lot. Q: Where do you go to skate? A: I go anywhere in the Kansas City area, like different skate parks. Then when I’m filming for a video, I go to different streets and stuff like that; I travel a lot for it too. I’ve been to Minnesota, Maine, and California. Q: What do you do when you travel? A: I skate in contest. I went to Pennsylvania for a camp. Q: What’s the coolest thing that has happened while you were travelling? A: I meet people from a lot of different places. I’ve met different pros and stuff like that; it’s really cool. Q: Tell me about filming. A: Filming is where you put together a video
part, and you send it to different companies. Once you’ve sent it to different companies, they check it out; and if they like it, they’ll start sending you products and stuff like that. Then you’ll eventually start skating with them and filming with them. They’ll eventually put you on the team. You go from different levels, like amateur to pro. I’m in the works of filming a video part right now, so I have to get it done by the end of the year. Q: What is in the video? A: Just different tricks that I’ve been working on. Sometimes I don’t get a trick in the day I film; I might have to come back two or three times and get the trick at the spot. Q: Have you ever been injured? A: Yes, but I haven’t broken anything, luckily. I have regular injuries but nothing too serious. Q: What is your ultimate goal? A: If I don’t go pro or have a career in it, just to work in the skateboard field in the business side of it. But ultimately, I just want to be involved in it no matter what, whether pro or working in the industry side of it. Written by Annelise Hanshaw Photos by Jared Shepherd Design by Annelise Hanshaw

Wilkes wrote a paper over the government not paying enough attention to mental illness. “They are wasting time and effort on things that do not matter when people are suffering,” Wilkes said. Wilkes decided that if no one else was going to help, then she would
do it. “I stumbled on story tellers page, and did my research,” Wilkes said. She needed a teacher to help make her plans fall into place, so Wilkes asked art teacher Angie Prindle. “I thought it was a great way to help students who are dealing with depression,” Prindle said. Two out of three people who struggle with depression do not seek help. Wilkes and Prindle are here to change that. On April 17 from 7:00-9:00 there is going to be a night of hope in the lecture hall. The night of hope is where guest speakers will tell their stories to help raise awareness. In addition to the Night of Hope, Hertzog Stadium will host a 5K on Sun, Apr 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. Walk for yourself. Walk for a friend. Walk for a cause. “We want to help teens find resources and help if they need it,” Prindle said. One Word. All around the country, mental health advocates, friends, and family members write ‘love’ on their arms to show their support to those struggling with depression. “We want to help teens find resources and help if they need it, Prindle said. Dear Hi+Life Readers,
Change is constantly happening all around us, even though we rarely ever take the time to stop and see some of the small changes in life. Even though we do not always control the changes, they affect you no matter what. We are also faced with decisions that can have tremendous impacts on our lives. Change can be for the better, and sometimes for the worst. Coach changed the time for practice and you missed you favorite show, but that same day you changed your hair and got a haircut and your crush complimented you on it. You do not always pay attention to the changes that you have no control over, but what about the ones you can control? Reflect back on the past year and think about some things that you wish you could have done better. Ponder some of the things that you wish you had done at all. Decide to make a change for the better in some way; push to do something you have always wanted, or improve on something you already do. Whether it is practicing

SILENCE FOR A DAY ARE YOU UP FOR IT? Many people are forced to stay silent due to their sexuality because of this The Day Of Silence has a whole day dedicated to stopping that silence. What it would be like to have to be silent for a whole lifetime, not ever saying a word to another living soul for fear of being rejected or ridiculed. What it would be like to be silent for a single day in support of these people. This is what The Day Of Silence is about. The Day Of Silence started in support of LGBT+, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans, and other sexualities, youth and adults who, in the past, were put to death, exiled, or simply ridiculed for being LGBT+. It has now morphed into a way to stop bullying and harassment as well as encourage schools to take a stance of support for all LGBT+ youth at their schools. This year it happens on April 11. During The Day Of Silence, students vow to be silent for the whole day in order to show their support and to encourage meaningful changes around the school. Some of these changes include allowing same gender escorts, having gender neutral bathrooms and locker rooms, and having more rules handling the bullying of LGBT+ students. Students have many different ways they are able to participate in The Day Of Silence, considering there may be classes where students are required to talk. Some of these classes would be choir, theatre, language classes, or in leadership positions within a class. Because of this many students choose
to have modified versions of The Day Of Silence. Some students choose to carry a dry erase board around to communicate, other text, some break the silence only for the class period(s) they are required to speak in.
The Day Of Silence, the student can bring it up to their principal, or even go onto the website and file a report about this supposed discrimination. School in general does not have the ability to prohibit students to participate based on the idea that it is disruptive. The only way a school could legally prohibit them would be to somehow prove that The Day Of Silence really was disrupting the class or school day. If a student gets harassed during the day, the school cannot claim that as disruption because of the Day Of Silence and therefore punish the students by not allowing it anymore. The school would be required to take action on the students doing the harassing. As students, there are many laws surrounding what can and cannot be done or On a final note, the school cannot restrict student speech just because it offends said, or in this case not said. Man’s Best Friend is... His Cat?
One local feline reaches fame.
E
nglish teacher Matthew Buxton’s cat is certainly no ordinary cat. His cat is one fabulous feline of a model. “It’s been a few years, but we tend to not like to talk about where he is right now,” said Buxton. “I think it’s important to focus on the peak of his career, which I think in many respects has yet to be topped by any other kitties in the area.” According to Buxton, his cat had already been born to be a model. Oscar is naturally good looking with perfect facial symmetry and paw structure. Magazines that he has modeled in include Hallmark Magazine. “He became a model out of sheer talent. When you have the looks that Oscar does, you don’t go searching for gigs, they come and find you,” said Buxton.
JLABMAG.COM HI+LIFE TRENDS 26
Buxton has had Oscar by his side for five years. Oscar came from an animal shelter and was adopted in 2008. Little did he know of the talent that lied within him. “It’s been tough for him. We have to have some talk now and then about just making sure he stays centered,” said Buxton. “At the end of the day, you realize that there are other kitties in the world that maybe aren’t as handsome, but you still need to conduct yourself in a respectful way.” The glory days are over for Oscar now though. He sits around the house, eats, and hunts for small birds. Though Oscar career has come to a close, Buxton says that he thinks Oscar will make a return to the modeling scene later in the game.

James Farquhar

Hard work, practice, and passion pay off.

he music begins from a dead silence. In a split second, sophomore James Farquhar’s eyes meet those of his accompanist, With a flourish his bow meets the strings of the gleaming instrument, and his accompanist’s fingers gracefully dance over ivory keys. The music is a whirlwind of crescendos, decrescendos, rich and heavy bow strokes and fingers moving with such vigor that, at moments in the piece, they appear blurred. When the song ends, James stands, takes a slight bow, and exits the room, a slow smile breaking out on his face. For Farquhar, this was an ordinary performance at the district-wide competition, a performance that earned him a one (superior) rating and the chance to continue on to the state level. His passion for music and the thick sound of the cello began when he was in elementary school. “I started playing the cello [in fourth grade] because my teacher at the time, Mrs. Maxwell, played the Jaws theme on it,” Farquhar said. He explained that he was inspired by the deep, thick growl it produced. Ever since then, his love for music specifically music made by the cello - has continued to grow. “I love that music can take you out of one place and virtually transport you to another. It is a sensation that is intricate yet indescribable,” Farquhar said. Farquhar said that passion is heavily intertwined with his playing. It is this passion that delivers him out of this world and into another, a world full of beautiful melodies and indescribable moments of beauty, happiness, and joy. Despite Farquhar’s success in playing his instrument, it has not always been an easy road. Even he has faced struggles along the way. “There was a period of time while I was a student of cello when I was struggling with the concept of a committed practice routine,” Farquhar said. “Since then, I have escaped the boredom of practicing.” Farquhar said that the passion he has for the cello can be just as valuable within practice as it is within performance. It is the motivation for him to do what it takes to improve his craft. All of that work must pay off somewhere. “Recently, I auditioned for the Lee’s
Summit Symphony Youth Artist Competition and won,” Farquhar said. Since he was the winner, he is honored with the opportunity of performing a solo at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on the day of the Lee’s Summit Symphony’s showcase concert, May 25. “It’s a humbling victory which I thank God for every day,” Farquhar said. For others that are trying to improve at an instrument or anything in life, Farquhar had a few words. “To anyone who is striving to become better, I say to persist, persist, persist. Never give up and never forfeit the authenticity of

your craft,” Farquhar said. Farquhar said that no matter what it is a person wants to improve, it is important to do it from the heart. With his music, he has done exactly that -- taken what he views as a gift and poured his heart into it. stronauts have to undergo years vigorous training before they can venture into the unknown. They learn survival skills, go through simulators, go underwater to practice their space walk, and many other training exercises. This girl has been preparing for her journey since she was in kindergarten. “The biggest culture shock was school. You don’t move to classes and teachers move to classes. Back in India you didn’t get to choose your subject, but here you have a lot of options which I really like because I get to take art,” said Visrutha Ram a foriegn exchange student from India. Schools are very different in other countries. Even other states have different ways of approaching education. Education is taken very seriously in the Indian culture. “Teachers are so much more friendly here, back in India studies were more complicated and teachers wanted things to be perfect, perfect and perfect. We have uniforms to school,” said Ram. We are very lucky to live in a country most people speak English. Contrary to popular belief English is actually not that hard to learn for our friends across the water. What is most difficult though is our slang. “We have 22 official regional languages. I used to talk my state language and my national language. I was used to English since at my school they had taught it since kindergarten the first few when people would say gotcha I was like what does that even mean,” said Ram. America has commonly been referred to as a melting pot of ethnicities. India has its own kind of melting pots. “When it comes to religion India is kind of a melting pot of religions so you find Hindu, Christian, Muslim.” said Ram Americans also eat lots of double
cheese burgers and super sized fries. Luckily for their liver Indians do not eat those kind of things. “We eat a lot of spicy food. I was never to such sandwiches, sandwiches, and sandwiches. I had never tasted cheese or peanut butter,” said Ram Missourians are sick and tired of the cold weather. In India they have warm and also humid weather. Especially during monsoon season. “I have never seen snow in India. This is my first time experiencing such cold weather,” There are lot of good things to be said about Americans. There is also a lot of flaws to us as well. “My favorite thing about America is the importance they give to people’s personal interests. My least favorite is how sometimes people talk like cussing and bad language. When you go to another country they tell that to not get angry and to be patient,” said Ram Ram has lots of interests and its a good things she has come to a country where she can express her interests freely. “ I love art and to talk about political stuff. I wanna to be a leader because I got a chance to attend this one leadership camp where i got to meet the congressman and the senator,” said Ram Ram has really dived into the American experience and has made lots of good friends here. “She is very sweet, and is eager to learn, she is friends with everybody, and she genuinely cares about other people,” said Tabitha Long friend of Ram. It takes a lot of work and training to be able to venture out into a place that is so different. It takes a lot of courage and luckily Ram has that courage now Americans get to learn about a culture that is very unique and interesting and get to know a girl who is equaly unique and interesting.

Makeup to match any dress Whether your dress is hot pink, black, or polka dotted, there are some basic tips, along with color specific ideas, to keep in mind. Red/Pink: don’t wear eye shadow that perfectly matches your dress. Preferably, wear a neutral color like a champagne colored, grey or black eye shadow to complement your dress and make your eyes pop. Go with a light colored lipstick to not overpower anything.

Lipstick Blues and their hues: Never wear blue or green for eye shadow. It is better to wear a gold or gray smoky eye to show off your eyes, with a more colorful lipstick.
