While holiday shoppers make last minute preparations, Summit Woods Crossing makes preparations of their own for the holidays in terms of readying patrons, and this year is certainly no exception.

Students of all varieties gathered together in the library on Dec 8. They came from different grades, social groups, even countries. What brought them all together was their love for poetry.

This is the season to be green. In the Fashion section there are many examples of how to accomplish that, including the latest styles and fashions, incorporated with a splash of green.

Signups are over, the teams are being chosen, and in the new year, a new sport will start. Lacrosse has finally come to LSHS.

Self-Indulgence

elf-indulgence can mean a lot of different things, and as we get older these things change. Several years ago, we might have indulged ourselves in a happy meal, while in middle school we indulged in listening to Paramore. Now, as high school students, and for us seniors in particular, we believe that time is the most selfindulgent thing we can have.   Time really is a luxury-- personal time, time with friends, time to party, what have you-- and that time seems to become less utilized the older we get. Everything seems to be about preparing for the next step, which is important, but not if it consumes your life. Throughout our education, we’re preparing to be young adults, first stepping out in the world on our own. At that point, whether working or studying at college, we prepare to find a career, have a family, and be able to financially support them. After that is even more preparation, for the rest of our lives.   It may seem pessimistic or cynical, but it’s the truth and it’s inevitable. In a very short time, we will be on our own paths in our lives, and we probably wont see much of each other again.   So why not treasure and thoroughly enjoy the time left? The time, for most of us, that still consists of not having to pay the bills, not having to worry about supporting a family, not having to prepare for adulthood quite yet. In other words, indulge in yourself. Be selfindulgent!   The center spread this issue was designed for this very reason. We felt that a lot of our audience needed to indulge in broadening their horizons, in particular to Kansas City. We outlined an entire day’s adventure, under $30, in the city with a few tips on further explorations.   In just a few days time, finals will be over, the candles from Candlelighting will have cooled, and we’ll be home. Enjoy the winter break and use our center spread to make it memorable.

BAN ON BRACELETS

BRACELET BAN FACING LSHS   When walking down the crowded hallways of LSHS, many students tend to be wearing similar bracelets; bracelets that have been banned in many schools across the nation. A majority of schools around the nation think the “IY boobies” bracelets are inappropriate and against dress code. Some schools have even told the students to turn the bracelets inside out so the word “boobies” is not showing. LSHS might become another school that bans these bracelets.   “It was our intent to ban the bracelets, but we put the emphasis on enforcing tardies, cell phones, and dress code. I think the bracelets got lost in the shuffle and it might be something we have to look into in the future,” Principal Dr. John Faulkenberry said. This past November, the American Civil Liberties Union sued a school because the school banned the bracelets. The ACLU is the nation’s guardian of liberty. They are there to defend individual rights and liberties that the Constitution guarantees to everyone.   The “Keep a Breast” nonprofit

by Ashley Burrison photo by Tre Harvey

organization who runs the bracelet campaign said that the bracelets are directed towards young people to raise awareness about breast cancer and to teach them about breast health. Some find the bracelets offensive and inappropriate, while others see them as a way to support the fight against breast cancer.   “It is not our place to tell a kid this is what your values are going to be, it is our place to say that while you’re here in this environment, these are the common values that we are going to educate about and support; and we’re going to expect kids to live up to,” Faulkenberry said.   If the school bans these bracelets in the future, they are doing what they think is best for the students. On the bright side of the ban, the Keep a Breast foundation has designed many other items for the youth to proudly wear: T-shirts, dog tags, and more. If our school allows these bracelets, wear them proudly and know that it goes towards a good cause.

Ban Bracelets. Many students at LSHS wear the I Y boobies’ bracelets. “It was our intent to ban the bracelets, but we put the emphasis on enforcing tardies, cell phones, and dress code,” Principal Dr. John Faulkenberry said. While the bracelets are not banded yet, its in thought for next year.

LAW PASSES NO MORE LIMEWIRE   The project was started in september 2004, by the members of the LimeWire open source community. Surely everyone has noticed the recent shut down of the popular file sharing website.   After a long controversial four year battle, the case was finally put to rest when the federal court of New York ordered permanent injunction against LimeWire usage. The website is banned from the estimated 50 million monthly users because of sharing copyrighted materials; infringement on a massive scale.   The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was able to bring down the mighty LimeWire on behalf of 8 other major music publishers showing that over 93 percent of software was made up of infringing content. When LimeWire came out in 1999 U.S. record sales were at 14.5 billion but by the year 2009 sale had drastically dropped to 7.7 billion. This really created a large problem for record companies, with free music being downloaded for millions of people. People now has converted to using FrostWire, which is a fork from LimeWire.   Since LimeWire is a open-source, the FrostWire community modified its code to remove some of the ads and re-release it. It is supposed to be equivalent to LimeWire Pro, but free of course.   Even though this decision of ending of ending the great LimeWire as we know it has happened, the company plans on coming back with a non-infringing website to ensure they don’t end back the court of justice. by. TAKE TWO: MUSICALS THE THEATER DEPARTMENT IS PUTTING A BIG TWIST ON THE TYPE OF SHOWS BEING PERFORMED THIS YEAR   This year the theater department is switching things up. Normally, the thespians would be preparing for their first play of the year, but instead they are preping for another musical: The Drowsy Chaperone.   Recently the school’s theater department had a successful showcase of the musical Curtains. The sound crew, light crew, stage crew, prop crew, makeup crew, and performers were all on their top game. The pit orchestra was splendid and the sets were all well constructed.   The musicals that the school puts on normally draw larger crowds. So will having two help bring in more profit for the talented theater department? I believe it will.   The Drowsy Chaperone is a comedy dashed with a bit of romantic drama and will be, without doubt, a well put together show. The cast has already been decided and they have already started practicing for opening night.   Even though this is a big switch for the department to make, hopefully it will help bring some more money and recognition to the people who put a lot of hard work into the shows. 8

THIS : New 2010 Call of Duty Black Ops Call of Duty Black Ops is the new Call of Duty that came out this year. The graphics on this new version are a lot better and the developers put more detail in the maps than they did in Modern Warfare 2. THIS : New 2010 Ipod Touch The new improved 2010 ipod touch is a THIS because it now has facetime, retina display, HD video recording, and a game center. The resolution is 960 - by - 640. It also lets you edit and share your HD videos. You can also play with people anywhere in the world using the game center. THIS : Just Dance 2 Just dance 2 has more than 45 songs, plus downloadable songs from different genres, also there dance moves have improved. In addition, Just Dance 2 pushes it even further with more accurate movement recognition by the Wii Remote, allowing better dancers to reap the rewards of their superior skill, without putting the game out of reach of beginners. Just Dance 2 extends the original’s well pitched functionality and style to create another compelling dance experience.

NOT THIS : Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is an older version of Call of Duty. Modern Warfare 2 has more glitches. The game does not alienate new players and can keep its player base higher for longer. For new players it would be hard for you to start with experienced players who have better map knowledge and mechanic knowledge and have better weapons and perk options. NOT THAT : Zune MP3 Player You can only watch T.V shows from the Zune marketplace, or you can go to the Windows Media center to watch shows on the go. You cannot sync without a cable, and you can play games from only the Zune selections. The MP3 Player is not touch screen, and you cannot record videos and share them with friends. NOT THIS - Just Dance Just Dance is when you dance and get graded on how well you mimic the dance moves. Just dance 2 has more games, different genres. There are poor visuals, motion controls fail to register correctly, and there is no way to download new tracks. by Tyler Wilmore JLABMAG.COM

KRIS KRINGLE: THE INTERVIEW

JOEY CONDON IS SANTA CLAUS

Santa Claus is a classic holiday staple. His image is everywhere: In malls, in poems, and even coke bottles. Yet what about the man behind the beard? There may be more to him than you think. Joey Condon is an expert on the man in the big red suit. He goes around the area telling the history of St. Nicholas, from the young boy pastor to the mystery we have come to know as Santa Claus. How does one get to do what you do? -I’m a pastor, but I also have my master’s in play writing. I went to a high school for performing arts. I’ve been using my talents for performing and also pastoring, and I think that they are almost one in the same. I have education and experience that helps me do what I do. When kids have sat on your lap, what is the funniest thing you have been asked for? -Sometimes older kids will ask for babies or a sibling. Some ask for weapons, or things of violence. But I’m most amazed when children get it. Instead of asking for the hottest gifts of the year, they ask me to make sure that I remember their neighbor down the street or a friend who doesn’t have anything. It really tugs at my heart strings. What do you do if a kid is crying? -When kids are crying, you don’t want to damage them forever. There’s some kids who are at that age. They’re not as confident and self assured. You have to back off and let them come to you. Work with the parent. Don’t press the issue. I echo their response. When they cry, I get sad too. Mirror what they do, or play peekaboo with them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You don’t want them to scream their head off. What’s your most memorable experience of this whole thing? -The most memorable experience is probably the beginning when it all started. The way the whole thing began was when my daughter 10

HI.LIFE 2010

was born. I had a lady in my congregation come up and pull me over. She told me that I was now a family man. I had to be an example for my children. She told me ‘Whatever you do, don’t let Santa Claus into your family and corrupt them.’ It was really strange to hear that. A minute later, another lady came up to me, and told me that she’s seen a lot of pastor’s children be denied and deprived of culture and she said ‘Whatever you do, do not deny your children of Santa Claus.’ The Lord nudged me to research for myself and as I dug deeper I realized there is is a great story here. When I first started performing the skit, I had almost ten pastors telling me I needed to come perform at their church. As the years went on, I figured out the costume changes so people could see the transformation. One time I was putting on a fake beard, I discovered the joy of the meet and greet and letting kids sit on my lap and talking to them. That’s when I started bleaching my hair and growing it out, so kids could tug on my beard and realize it’s real. In the end, it was just an epiphany. This story needed to be told. What’s the most important thing you think people should know about Santa Claus? -Santa Claus is the legacy of a Christian pastor. Most of the traditions we have were begun by him. He had a simple message of love and generosity. Santa Claus is not a modern invention. We carry his ministry. Why do you do this? -Many parents who really don’t understand how to answer the question, “who is Santa?” The whole point of writing this Santa Claus service and performing it is to help this answer this. The way I present it, it’s neither one or the other. It’s just kind of out there. It helps them ease in to it. I do this for the parents, but it’s also a way in which I can reclaim the icon-there’s a great story that occurs. It’s a passion. It’s a story of a defender of the faith. What do you want for Christmas? -I could say that I want peace on earth for Christmas, and give you a beauty pageant response. This economy has been really hard, and it’s been tough for everyone. I just want to see a smile on my kids faces, and make sure they understand the joy. I always have at least one gift from Santa, and I do it as secretively as I can. During the year, Condon is a pastor and a theatre teacher. He is driven by a passion to let people know the true story of Santa Claus: a man of faith, joy, and generosity. Condon continues to share the good news of the gospel, and spread the cheer of the jolly old St. Nick. story and photos by Haley Gillilan

Poetry Coffee House

A Dream Within A Dream-- Edgar Allan Poe: Take this kiss upon the brow! And in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow- You are not wrong who

.

The Library Media Center was transformed into an inviting coffeehouse last Wednesday. A microphone stood facing a small stool. Surrounding tables were adorned with clappers and small chocolates. While two tables held chips, tiny cakes, cookies, sodas, and coffee. Soft music played as students signed in and filled their plates.   The poetry coffeehouse is an annual event held by librarian Sandy Staurt and the Poetry Club every year in the celebration of poetry. Students were welcome to share a poem by a famous poet or one they have written themselves. Some English teachers even offered extra credit for participating.   Reading a poem out loud may seem intimidating at first. However, everyone is very accepting and supportive.   This year’s turnout was great. The stool was rarely vacant and the poems kept coming. Participates enjoyed poetry of all sorts including many haikus, a few limericks, slam poetry, famous poems, and poems written by their peers. They even enjoyed some thought provoking stand-up.   A video of the event will be posted on the Poetry Club website for all to see.   All who participated enjoyed a pleasant evening of poetry and friends. CENTER SPREAD

The Hi.Life compiled a list of hot spots in Kansas City to hit in a single day, all under $30, as long as parking is validated. NELSON ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART

Being a massive museum home to art from multiple eras in human history, the Nelson is a great starting point for a KC adventure. Some of the most fascinating spots include the Japanese and Ancient collections, and the Sculpture Park is fun to explore for those willing to fight the cold. Price: Free with the exception of various limited time exhibitions and screenings.

KEMPER MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The Kemper Museum is just a short, walkable distance from the Nelson and typically showcases more modern, contemporary artists. Current exhibitions include Gao Brothers: Grandeur and Catharsis and Acquisitions in Context: Marc Swanson. Price: Free!

KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY

This library lies in the middle of downtown Kansas City next to the parking garage with the bookshelf facade. Though the building itself is reason enough to visit, the library also offers free screenings of various movies in the Durwood Film Vault on Mondays at 6:30 and Saturdays at 1:30. Price: Free!

UNION STATION

Union Station is home to many fun attractions such as the childhood favorite Science City and the Planetarium. Simply taking a personal tour is entertaining enough, and not a dime has to be spent. The balconies allow great views of the interior of the station and the Liberty Memorial. Price: Free with the exception of extra attractions such as Dinosaurs Unearthed ($13.50) and the Planetarium ($6).

LIBERTY MEMORIAL

Directly across the street from Union Station stands the 217 feet tall Liberty Memorial. The architecture and the astounding cityscape view from the observation deck are the cheapest reasons to visit, however the nationally acclaimed World War I museum is accessible for a meager and worthwhile fee. Price: Free with the exception of the National World War I Museum ($6-10).

THE ART OF PIZZA

Arguably the best pizza in Kansas City can be found at The Art of Pizza in the Crossroads art district, just behind Union Station. A single, gratifying slice of pizza begins at $2.45 and goes up from there with additional toppings. Exploring the Crossroads could also take up an entire day, with all of its art galleries and eclectic shops. Price: $3-5

For Narnia THIRD FILM OF THE NARNIA SAGA TREADS THE BIG SCREEN   The Chronicles of Narnia: The

Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third movie of the Narnia series, and it is based on the fantasy novel CS Lewis. In the third film the youngest of the kids Edmund and Lucy go back to Narnia with their cousin Eustace. They join the new ruler of Narnia in the quest of locating the lost seven lords; This will save Narnia from the corrupting evil that is on the dark island. The movie really concentrates on emphasizing the importance of faith through the

character Aslan. Even though Aslan died in the last movie, everyone still speaks as if he is still alive. Though out the movie he will appear before the main characters to give them a helping hand. A very controversial thing about the third Narnia film is all of the Christian allegory included, and Aslan being a Christ figure. He sacrificed himself, the witch, and the wardrobe for Narnia and to claim his land. His land is for the greatly departed souls with a nobel heart. The film ends with

Aslan assuring Lucy that he will still be with her where ever she goes, even if it is outside of Narnia.   This movie protrays the triumph of good over evil. Despite all the spiritual content in the film, it seemed to tone down some of the Christian aspects. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader gives you all the fun you would expect from a Narnia movie. The special effects are amazing and watch worthy, one will really feel as if they are inside their fairy tale world.

Even with all the flaws, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is an enjoyable film, but more of a children’s film. The message of self-confidence, good dominating evil, and the importance of faith is very clear and easy for kids to understand. Rating: 8 out of 10

Making Things Happen

by Opinions Editor Kevin Adams

FOR EACH PERSON A RESOLUTION IS SOMETHING THEY WERE PRESSURED INTO INSTEAD OF A PERSONAL GOAL.

Dear Editor,

Each year, individuals choose to make New Year’s resolutions, but not many of them hold true to their resolutions.   At some point in their life, most people will make some kind of resolution. Among some of the most common, people will typically choose something along the lines of to loose weight or to quit eating certain foods such as candy or carbonated beverages. Not only do a few set radical goals like completing all of their homework assignments before five o’clock each night, many do not stick to their original resolution. This wouldn’t generally be a problem, and hopefully it will not become one in the near future. But with the new year approaching, students and teachers alike are beginning to think of what they want to accomplish in the coming year. Before selecting the first thought that comes to mind, each individual should take the time to think it over for themselves.   The first thing that most people overlook is what is important to them. If somebody couldn’t care less about something, then their resolution should definitely not be about those things. If someone cares about anything, then they should want to do better at what they do. But if everyone made it about something they liked or enjoyed, then resolutions might actually become enjoyable. If the goal is to become more awake during school,

make the goal reasonable. Instead of making a resolution to chug Monster every morning before class, make it to go to sleep an hour earlier each night to gain enough sleep to be awake in class.   Each resolution has its ups and downs. In many instances, the person who chose to partake in the new year’s resolution should feel a sense of accomplishment if the initial goal was attained. But if the goal was difficult to reach, then there may have been problems along the way. Stressing over something as trivial as a new year’s resolution is simply not worth it in most cases. Not saying that aspiring to greatness is a bad thing, but pushing the limits is definitely not the way to achieve what is wanted in life. There are always other routes for people to take when deciding which path they should take in anything. Nobody should let anyone else pressure them.   Instead people could take a step back and realize that being pressured into anything is not good for them. Whether it be making a new years resolution or deciding what topic to write a research paper about, each decision should be thought about and carefully evaluated so that it is what the individual actually wants.

Thinking about things is the only surefire way to get things to happen how people want them to. Only each individual is responsible for themselves. Sometimes the best resolutions are the ones that matter to each individual. So this time around, try to make a resolution that is important. If that is done, then it will not seem like work is being done, but instead a greater sense of achievement will be gained.

Often people criticize the entire idea of a scholarly system, but even more often students criticize the way it’s run. Our common society run on equally positive and negative feedback for the betterment of comfortable living. Many students willingly share comments relating to how poorly a teacher treats their class by assigning them homework and requiring them to do the work. Problems that should be addressed are the illogical rules that the school enforces. For example, ‘why are we not able to wear hats in school?’ they’re simply an accessory; they can’t be too much of a distraction. What bothers me most of all is the inability to eat outside during lunch. Many psychological studies, as well as common sense, have proven that being outside helps one’s health and brings happiness.   Now, of course, there are some faults that some students can’t complain about with our school, but that’s inevitable. Our school is a leading high school in the country. With an excellent faculty and administrative body, students are fortunate to be able to have the advantage of learning in such a genuine environment. People aren’t used to appreciating good things that come into their lives and would rather complain about how perfect things aren’t.   If feedback about what is wrong with our school was more positive than negative, it would be more politely accepted. Once a group of people can respectfully address situations with mature ambiance, problems would be able to be solved and any democracy could by junior Edgar Enriquez easily work.

How often do you use the clocks in the hallways?

SOME OF THE CLOCKS IN THE HALLWAYS MISLEAD STUDENTS AS TO THE TIME IT ACTUALLY IS.

“100 percent of the day because I need to make sure that I am not late to class,” freshmen Caymen Metcalf said. “Never, because I always just look at my phone for the time not the clock,” sophomore Phong Tran said. “No I never look at the clocks because I am always on time to class therefore I have no reason to look at the clocks,” junior Mary Jimenez said.

.

The clock reads 7:33, students have two minutes left to get to their first class of the day. In this hallway though the clock is wrong and the bell rings. School has started and some students are already late.   With their digital faces glowing red the school clocks are littered throughout the buildings. Most students rushing to class depend on them for many reasons. If the clocks are wrong, how can students get to class on time?   The new clocks were installed within the last two years. They are wireless and should all match up. However, this is not always the case. The school is working with the clock company to fix these problems. Until this is done, the clocks simply will not be in sync.   The bell system has the ability to produce a different sound with a softer tone. This could be used to give students a warning one minute before the tardy bell. This could help students by informing them that they need to pick up their pace. For students who don’t have far to go and spend their passing period conversing with friends, this could be their warning to end their conversation so that they may get to class on time.   However, even with the different tones, the many bells could easily become confusing. Teachers and students could mistake the warning bell for the tardy bell. They may not even hear the bell in the noisy chaos of the hallways. In that case, the purpose of the bell would be defeated.   Many students who wait until the last second to get to class will still be late to class, regardless of a warning bell. The warning bell may not help much at all. Passing period is the only time some students get to socialize. The warning bell would be a great asset to students with a social life or students that have a time limit.   The Hi-Life staff has been informed that the warning bell has been discussed before and the chance of obtaining one is little to none. For now, when students cannot depend on the clocks in the hallways, they will have to depend on their own internal clock.

New Air Travel Security

Open Lunch Shifts

STUDENTS AT LSHS ARE UNABLE TO EAT OUT. g Jacob Valentine

TRYING TO MAKE AIR TRAVELING SAFER FOR ALL. g Kim Tabe

After the Sept. 11 tragedy, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has increased the airport security. There have been uproars and protests concerning the new full-body scan and pat-downs. Many citizens feel that the new procedures are unnecessary and violate their rights.   It is heard frequently on the news and in different reports of people opting out of the searches. While the TSA feels that the full-body scans are necessary for the safety of travelers, some believe that the scans are unconstitutional.   These new procedures have increased the waiting times because body scan protestors are slowing down the process. Travelers are becoming impatient, angry, and uncomfortable with the revealing measures being taken at the airports.   For those who do not understand what the full-body scan is, it is a machine that is used to expose the entire body to detect any weapons or explosives that travelers could be carrying. This scan reveals the whole human body, making it very awkward for most travelers.   The travelers who do not want the body scans have an option to opt out, but they must have a severe pat-down that may include very uncomfortable touching. The pat-downs are performed by a person of the same gender and take place outside of the clothing; however, these pat-downs may include touching under undergarments as well as under folds of fat, in search of possible bombs.   The controversy over these procedures is too much for the TSA agents to bear because they are being threatened and being labeled as ‘child molesters.’ It is only their job to make sure that citizens have a safeflight to and from their destinations. There is never a such thing as ‘too much’ safety, they are only doing their jobs.   So before one goes to the airport to board a flight, here are five tips to remember: Try to avoid overreacting, understand what opting-out means, ask to speak to a supervisor if you are uncomfortable, leave hours before your flight, and ask for help if you need it.   The Transportation Security Agency is only trying to make air traveling safer for all travelers. Before pointing fingers and accusing the TSA agents of being ‘molesters’, try to understand that they are trying to protect many people’s lives. Terrorist attacks have frightened many people, and they are only doing their job to prevent something like the Sept. 11 incident from happening again. So whether one thinks that the procedures are necessary or not, think about the lives these procedures save.

Students having the ability to leave off campus to get their lunch has never been a option for Lee’s Summit High School. This choice of leaving campus for lunch has many students asking why they can not.   According to principal John Faulkenberry students unfortunately will not be seeing the possibility of open lunch on this campus. He believes that having lunch is not a bad thing, however we are just not in the area for it. The Board of Education try their best to reflect what the citizens want, and businesses do not want to lose their regulars to high school students buying off the dollar menu.   Students may like this choice or may not, but where could they go if they did have the privilege of leaving campus? The closest places to stop and get food would probably be QuikTrip or Jimmy John’s which would be a mad house trying to get over there, inside, and back in under 28 minutes to make it to your next class. There businesses are not set up to serve hundreds of kids in a quick and timely manner.   The nearest school to have the open lunch policy is North Kansas City High, and it has been working there since the school’s creation in 1925. Assistant principal Chad Evans explained how their system works for open lunch. Students in grades 10-12 get the privilege right off the bat to go out for open lunch. When Freshman have to go through a six week period to establish grades and good record. Students have the capability of walking out of campus, to the local stores around the block near the school to eat then come back by the designated time. Evans said the future of the school involves a new cafeteria at which point the open lunch policy will be looked at and possibly revised.   Even though schools as near as Kansas City have the option of leaving the campus for their lunch, Lee’s Summit High School however, does not see this rule change coming in the future.

SELF DEFENSE SHOUD BE MADE MADNATORY AS LEARNING HOW TO RIDE A BIKE

Y

ou’ve seen it in movies: a girl carelessly strolls through a dark alley to take a shortcut home after leaving the grocery store. Suddenly, she finds herself face to face with a grotesque looking man who dove out from behind a nearby dumpster. In situations like these, one must rely on self defense skills to get themselves to safety.   In a world where crime is constantly rising, more and more people are being brutally attacked. In fact, Kansas City has been ranked as one of the top five most dangerous cities in the United States. Unfortunately for some attack victims, there is no hope in winning a fight. That is why taking self defense lessons are in best interest. Sophomore Crosby Wilson discusses the importance and process of a self defense class.

“I took self defense about two years ago when I was 11 years old at a place called Kids 2 Leaders. Here was where I learned a lot about defending myself in bad situations. It taught me about the basics of self defense and how to use anything nearby as a weapon when need be. I thought that part was really cool.” Wilson said. Wilson pushed herself in order to become the black belt that she is today.   “Even though the process was pretty hard, I think it was worth it in the end. I remember going to several early- morning camps where we would run at least a couple miles for warm up, go and practice for the rest of the morning, then go back out and run some more. The one I really remember was when we had to run out in the snow, most of the kids didn’t even have shoes on. We had class about twice a week for an hour each time, and in that period of time it was pretty intense. In tournaments I typically did really well. I placed first in most of my events including weapons. After several different levels; I eventually ended up with the black belt. I was glad to have finally made it to that point. But yes, in the end everything really did pay off.”   After enduring the self defense process, students will surely feel much safer and confident in overcoming an attack.

Hair Secrets Revealed

LEARN HOW TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY HAIR   Beautiful, shinning hair is a valuable asset after all hair one of the most important things to a persons appearance needs to be healthy, but what exactly is healthy hair? What are myths and what are realities about taking care of hair. With so many different hair types, normal, oily, dry, fine, frizzy, thick there are different ways to go about taking care of hair.   Two simple facts about washing your hair are shampoo takes the natural oils in your hair. The shampoo is used to take out dirt and other things but it also takes out the natural oils in the hair which is why conditioner is used to put oils back in your hair to make it look super healthy and shinny.   Believe it or not it is healthy for you hair not to wash it every day. Shampoo and conditioner take and put chemicals into you hair and

doesn’t allow the natural oils to do there part in the hair. If the hair is more fine the oils in the hair will show faster so it may be called to wash the hair more often. If the hair is thick then it will take longer to absorb the natural oils and will stay clean longer.   Along to another tip, conditioner put oils in the hair and the natural oils are coming from the scalp which is why the ends of hair get dry, to keep your hair looking cleaner and healthier use the conditioner on the ends of the hair so that the ends get refreshed with artificial oils that the ends would not otherwise get. This will keep the ends of the hair looking fresh and beautiful. With hair being a visual important asset to your appearance it is good to know how to keep it looking its best. by Marissa Raukar photo by Brittany Webster

Tease it Up. There are many different types of hair; thick, thin, curly, or straight. Believe it or not, washing ones hair everyday is not the best thing for it. Shampoo takes more than dirty out of hair, it takes out the natural oils of hair.

Healthier Vending

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, HEALTHY LIVING CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITH THE OCCASIONAL VENDING MACHINE SNACK   Vending machines in general have earned

a bad name for themselves. Most students utilize them because there is no other food alternative. It is not just a matter that the food is available all the time, it is because vending machines tend to have certain snacks that students enjoy.   “Schools provide not only an environment for learning, but an environment that effects healthful eating and physical activity. School officials should make it a priority to ensure that foods served in vending machines do not increase the amount of obese children,” child pediatrician Warren Jackson said.   The Lee’s Summit School District decided that the vending machines should not be stocked with certain unhealthy drinks. Each of the choices are diet products. Changing the drinks to diet forces students to drink healthier drinks. If the district were to change the snacks in the vending machines, it would force students to eat healthy snacks as well.

“Every time the district has changed the food sold in the vending machines, students always complain. After while everybody buys the products. The point is, the officials of the district control what students eat. The district should consider investing in healthy vending machines. It would improve the health of kids in our district and across America,” freshman Ishmail Zabihullah.   Students complain about the drinks in the vending machines, not caring about the health problems that may come with the regular drinks served in other districts.   “Most students would be impressed that the school district would put the effort into having vending machines that only contain healthy foods. Mature students would appreciate being taken care of, and offering them the chance of easily having a proper snack, is certainly a way of doing it.”   If the school district were to show that they care about the health of its students, overall morale would be much higher.

Fast Food. Choosing particular snacks from vending machines does not have to interfere with a healthy lifestyle.

It impress parents, students, and some employees.   Even though vending machines in general have earned a bad name for themselves, students utilize them anyway because there is no other food alternative. Roller Coaster Ride TIGERS HAVE THEIR UPS AND DOWNS   The Tigers have already experienced a seasons worth of emotions. After beating Truman 72-65, the Tigers experienced the high end of the spectrum, but then the squad felt that high quickly evaporate as the team fell 51-55 to the Ruskin Eagles.   The Tigers have had some great shooting performances this season already. Against Ruskin, the Tigers started the game six for six from three-point land and quickly went up 18-5. That was on the way up the roller coaster. After that blistering first quarter, the Tigers offense seemed to fizzle out. After only mustering a few baskets in the second quarter, the Tigers’ lead shrunk. The third quarter was as stagnant as the second, with neither team’s offense in sync. The fourth quarter was the

Tigers’ downfall as they could not match up with Ruskin’s athleticism. The game was essentially over at that point, even one Tiger player was feeling the game slip away.   “After that dunk, no one wanted to even play anymore.” junior Tyler Smith said.   As for the highs of this roller coaster, some new leaders have emerged for the squad. Senior Ronnie Thomas co-lead the Tigers in scoring in their victory over Truman High School (tied with Senior Skyler Arbuckle). Senior Sam Sealer has already been proclaimed “The Bomb Squad” by fans. With the combination of great outside shooting a physical inside game, the Tigers offense has the potential to win a great majority of their games this season. The Tiger defense has also been stellar. Switching from man

never thought the Chiefs would have a chance at the play-offs. I never thought there I would see the Chiefs lead their division. I really never thought there would be a day when I missed Matt Cassel. WaitWhat? Miss Matt Cassel? I can imagine that many of you probably thought the same thing. I honestly expected this to be another terrible year that once it was realized all hope was lost, the Chief’s staff would claim it was just another rebuilding year.   Now obviously the success of the Chiefs can not be entirely attributed to Matt Cassel. The defense this year has been outstanding with the Brandon’s, the addition of Eric Berry, and the entire Chief’s defense and special teams. Clearly the Chief’s do not rely entirely on Matt Cassel considering they have the best running game in the NFL, but, we were able to see what happens when we do not have Cassel with the embarrassment in San Diego.   There was an article written last year by another staff member titled, “Worth the Cassel?” I think at this point in time we can acknowledge that he was in fact worth the hassle. Matt Cassel has helped lead the Chiefs to a 6-0 home record and a formerly 8-4 record, now 8-5 after the loss to San Diego. The Chiefs need Cassel, they need him healthy, they need him to be at the top of his game, they need him to play every game, especially since back up quarterback is 0-10 as a starter.   So while I never thought I would miss Matt Cassel, I can not believe how I ever thought he was not, “Worth the Cassel.” Also, a congratulations to Sam Sealer for winning the Otis Taylor award and to Corbin Berkstresser for being nominated for the Thomas Simone award. story by Nate Day
