Improvements

common theme for us this month has been improvements. If you read our letter in the previous issue, you would know that the newspaper staff is doing their best to improve the stories, photos, and designs seen in the Hi.Life and Jlabmag.com. When we had our usual story idea discussion to start off the issue this past month, we asked ourselves what our readers would want to see. You can probably guess that the answer was improvements.   In this issue, we bring up many conflicts about things that need improving. Our Staff Editorial this month is on the old school library we have, and the renovations that it deserves to fit the needs of the student body. The center spread is on improving situations involving teenage depression with some great advice from our guidance counselors. And then there are stories like the ones in the health section, providing a few good tips to keep you healthy.   If you don’t care about improvements, that’s okay. We stayed true to our goal-providing informative and entertaining stories like the feature on LARPing as well as a review on the new movie, Hereafter.   We’ve talked a lot about improvements, and now we want to hear from you. What do you want improved about our school? What do you want to see in the Hi.Life? Any question you guys have, we are here to answer. We are, like, the journalism staff, so it’s kind of our job. It’s very easy to get us those questions, too. Below this letter is a list of every staff member, give your question to one of them, and they’ll report back to us. Or you can drop off your question right in the Jlab. In the meantime, happy reading!

Dance Policies

Rules of The Dance

DIVING INTO THE DANCE POLICY     Dirty dancing has become a hot topic after some perceived that the school’s inappropriate dancing has gotten out of control. If it continues, the students might have to sign a contract before being able to go to a dance, and a student could be kicked out of the dance. Principal John Faulkenberry answers the questions by explaining why the dancing policies have gotten strongly enforced.   Q. Where did the idea to attach flyers to Homecoming tickets come from?   A. The idea came from Truman high school. They had done a dance contract and Faulkenberry talked to Student Senate, about doing the same thing. “ We had made an agreement that we didn’t want to do contracts for this dance, and we also agreed that our students should clearly understand what the expectations are for dancing at the dance,” Faulkenberry said.   Q. How do you think students did meeting your expectations?   A. “I think the students did well, they weren’t perfect but I thought for the most part kids did a good job at the dance. Its a difficult thing, many schools are struggling with these dances,” Faulkenberry said.   Q. Will we be required to sign something when we buy our Courtwarming tickets?   A. “Yeah we’re still talking about that to see if we actually want to move to act or not. I’ve always been pleased in my time here as principal that when we set expectations students met those. So we haven’t decided to do a contract for the court warming dance,” Faulkenberry said.

The following rules were printed on the homecoming tickets and were posted in the lobby during the dance. Dirty Dancing. This year the dance policy is being strictly enforced. “Dances are a privilege not a right so part of what we’re trying to teach is level of formal etiquette,” Principal Faulkenberry said. So just remember keep it classy.

Q. Why aren’t boys allowed to wear sneakers or hats at the dance? What is wrong with it? A.“Dances are a privilege not a right so part of what we’re trying to teach is level of formal etiquette. It’s been our belief administratively and with Student Senate that at the dances kids need to dress up for them. That’s why we try putting out the expectations ahead of time and staying away from jeans, shorts, tennis shoes, hats, and sweat suits,” Faulkenberry said.   So if dirty dancing continues and gets out of control, the students might have to sign a contract before being able to go to a dance, and a student could be kicked out of the dance. As Dr.Faulkenberry said schools are supposed to be a reflection of the community, and our community would not approve the way by Tyler Willmore teens are dancing. photo by Elaine Fouchia

Inappropriate dancing or behavior may result in the student being instructed to leave the dance and may make him/her ineligible to attend future dances. Any student is found to be under the influence of, or in possession of, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, will be suspended per district policy. Dress code for the dance states that students must avoid wearing jeans, sweat suits, shorts, tennis shoes, and baseball caps.

Smoking Ban

Smoking Ban Coming to Lee’s Summit

Cast Out Cigarettes. Lee’s Summit has a law that prohibits underage teenagers from buying tobacco products, but not from using them. Lee’s Summit Cares is trying to help pass a city ordinance that will provide consequences to underage smoking.

HI.LIFE 2010

There is a state-wide ordinance in Missouri prohibiting underage teenagers from using tobacco products. Most cities have adopted the state law as their own, except the city of Lee’s Summit. Lee’s Summit prohibits underage teenagers from purchasing tobacco products, but not from using tobacco products. This may soon change if a local special interest group, Lee’s Summit Cares, has their say. Lee’s Summit Cares is a special interest group made up of a variety of different people students, parents, educators, ect., who share the same

opinions and goals. They are working to reduce the effects of underage use of tobacco and youth safety in Lee’s Summit. With this new ban, there will be several consequences to underage smoking and tobacco use.   The consequences are not to get the teenagers in trouble but to stop them from smoking. The first offense is a cessation class, teaching you the dangers of tobacco. The second offense would be a $100 fine.   The question remains if the ordinance is passed, will the penalty be severe enough to make a change in the underage

use of tobacco products? If this law passes, it may be a drag to some teenagers.     Others, like junior Britnee Lyons, believe it’s a good thing.   “Honestly, I think it’s a great rule because kids our age do not need to be smoking. You are in school, live your life. It is a suicide that affects slowly,” said Lyons.   Lee’s Summit is one of the last cities in the area without a smoking ban. Lee’s Summit Cares is taking the new ordinance to the City Council on Nov 4, and are hopeful it passes. by Ashley Burli photo by Tre Harvey

SAFETY FACTOR

by News Editor Luke Jarnevic   School safety is a very serious matter that schools around the nation have tended to focus more on after tragic school shootings. These shootings have stressed the importance on school safety in even the better school districts. The R-7 school district has been a safe learning environment for years.   I feel that we at Lee’s Summit High School have performed better academically then other competing schools because we do not have to worry about school safety. School safety should not be an issue that students need to think about during the course of the day or at all, school safety should be a given thing.   In the past couple weeks a competing school district has had some issues facing security. Ray-Pec High School has been faced with both a threat of a school shooting and a bomb threat. These threats have decreased the attendance at Ray-Pec on both days. This threat brings up questions about what our school and school district has done differently in the safety procedure.   The biggest incidence that our school has dealt with in the past four years, was the bus shooting after a Lee’s Summit vs Lee’s Summit North rivalry game. This is the next level, its not just a small fist fight between two students who had a dispute over a silly issue.   Fighting in school is the only major issue in safety that we have a problem with. So far this school year has been pretty mellow, we have not had an excess in fights that faced the school last year. I feel that there is no possible reason two kids need to fight in school, it creates a distraction for other students who are trying to learn. Even though the past few years have been plagued with fights, I feel that this year we have stopped the childish fights and the school security has prevented such fights.   We are lucky to attend R-7 school district, where we can feel safe and focus on learning.

Curtains Up. “Curtains” is the November school musical about a murder mystery. “We start at about 2:40 everyday and practice ends at 5, we also practice on Sundays,” freshmen Randy Matney said. Everyone in the musical practices very hard to put on a great performance.

BACKSTAGE PASS WITH THE MUSICAL CREW   Lee’s Summit High School students seem to have a flair for the dramatic. However, this drama transcends what the audience views on stage, and finds a home in the process before opening night. On stage, many people are found to be busy getting ready for the musical and have much more than one objective to complete and perfect by November. One person out of many can be found working at practice on dancing and choreography.   “I wouldn’t call our jobs around the stage a position exactly, but everyone in the musical works hard to get the dancing down as well as the choreography,” freshman, Randy Matney said. “Curtains,” ironically the name of the musical comedy, tells a story not only of the play itself but the productional the crew, cast, and members are seeking to accomplish.   “The musical is very time consuming and can be seen by many as not worth working on, but before every practice we have a

fun activity we do to loosen everyone up,” freshman Andrew Wright said.   While there are only ten to 12 actors seen up on stage, there are actually about 35 to 40 people total included in the making of “Curtains.” Due to this practices can be very crowded and time consuming, but they can be a very fun experience.   “We start at about 2:40 everyday and practice ends at 5, we also practice on Sundays,” Matney said.   What the audience sees is a play made to entertain, but what they are not aware of are the budget cuts made this year. These cuts made the amount of work space a little smaller, but

the creative people in the musical all make sure this is something no one can see very easily.   “Everyone behind-thescenes work to their best advantage. I have switched from being an actor to a crew hand and the crew really does do more than the audience may realize,” Wright said. Even though the most exciting part for the audience is viewing the musical on opening night, the cast finds excitement in not only this night but in the several nights they spent preparing for the final production.

Dramatic Act. A lot of work goes into making the musical a show to see. “The crew really does do more than the audience may realize,” freshman, Randy Matney said. With the budget cuts made this year it was even more of a challenge than last year.

DAVID FOX, THE INTERVIEW PROFILE ON THE MATH TEACHER

David Fox has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with. His exceptional teaching skills and fun classroom antics have earned him much fame among his students. wI went to UMKC for my bachelors degree and then to Webster University for my masters. I decided to teach math because I was always good at it as a kid and just thought it would be a fun subject to teach others. Most students aren’t the biggest fans of math so I thought it would be good for me to teach them. wI am married with two children. My wife teaches at Lee’s Summit North High School. My children aren’t really children anymore, they are both 18 years old. I have a boy and a girl. They are twins. Their names are Jordan and Megan Fox. That’s right. My daughter is the original Megan Fox. They both graduated from Ray- Pec High School this past year. My son is going to Longview for college and my daughter is going to Missouri State. She runs cross country for them and both indoor and outdoor track. One of the main things my son does is play the piano for our church so he is on the road a lot and playing in Sunday services for the church. wIf I could have three wishes granted right now, the decisions would be obvious. For the first I would ask for good health for myself and my family. Second, I definitely would not mind having more money. Who doesn’t need more money? And third, I would wish for having more time to spend with my family. It seems much harder to do now with my kids at school and my wife and I are working. So having more time to be with them would be great. wI do a lot of projects in my spare time. I mostly work on our cars and things on the house. I drive a mini van which has got like a million miles on it which requires a lot of attention. When I need something to do, the van never lets me down. There is always something to do on it. As a matter of fact, all of our cars have a lot of miles on them. Our house is getting old too so it also needs some looking after. I also watch a little TV. One of my favorite TV shows is Criminal Minds. I also watch the Young and the Restless. wWith a million dollars I would buy a new house for my family, send my children to whatever college they actually wanted to go to, and definitely purchase a new car. wWhen I was a teen I liked to do a lot of playing outside. My family and I were always outside as kids. We would always get together and do everything from playing a game of football, to go exploring in the woods. I had three sisters, but they were all older than me so I almost grew up as an only child because they were older than me. One of my sisters is only three 8

HI.LIFE 2010

years older than me but she sure seemed to grow up awful quick. I was probably spoiled as not only the youngest child, but also as the only boy. I also wanted to be an airline pilot. I dont’t know why, but it just sounded like the perfect job. I would be able to travel all over the world. I travel now more than ever because of all my daughter’s cross country meets down in Springfield and all across the midwest here so we do a little bit of local travelling. I have never been out of the country though. That’s why I have always wanted to be an airline pilot.   Not only is Fox an optimistic math teacher, but also an average family man. He would do anything for the sake of his family as well as his cherished math students.

STEPS TO TAKE FOR GRADUATION

oing well academically in high school should prepare students for most college classes. In college, the number of assignments is lower and are worth more points. There are many steps that need to be taken before going to a college. Following them should make the transition from high school to college smooth.   “Starting early in high school is very helpful in preparing for college. It gives most students a head start on knowing what certain goals need to be met to excel in college,” guidance counselor Rita Duval Said.   There are so many opportunities to get help with preparation for college. The most popular ways are being involved in A+, visiting colleges and universities, and talking to guidance counselors. Students should do their research to know more about schools they would like to attend.   “College visits give a feel for what the school is like. It gives high school students a chance to be involved with college students and professors,” Duval said.   Students are allowed three official college visits. Each high schooler should take advantage of at least one visit to see what college life is like. Most colleges will allow students to sit in an actual college class to experience a real lecture.   “Applying early at colleges gives high schoolers the chance to see what the schools are looking for in a future student.” A+ coordinator Kara Farren said. “High School classes are meant to set the foundation for colleges courses,” Farren said.   Scholarships are a well kept secret. Most students do not know about the abundance of scholarship money available to them. Scholarships can help pay for certain college expenses. The application process is very simple for scholarships. Applying early this case is important as well.   “Keeping in touch with counselors is extremely important. They know everything you need to have completed before graduation and can help with figure out difficult problems that go on in class rooms”, Farren said.   Taking the necessary steps before going to college should make the transition from high school to college much easier. FASHION FAUX PAS

LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS, SHIRTS ARE NOT DRESSES by Features Editor Mikayla Frommer   Everyone is different and so are their styles. High school girls often express themselves through their fashion and there is definitely a rising trend among the teenage girls: Leggings for pants and shirts for dresses.   Leggings are a piece of clothing that one should put under a skirt, but recently many girls have decided that they count as pants. Since when is it okay to only wear something that is see through? As far as shirts being dresses, just because it is long does not mean it covers everything on a person’s body, and throwing a belt into this combination does not mean it is a completed outfit. This trend makes some people wonder why in the world would those girls only wear leggings and a shirt, while the ones wearing this combo enjoy the trend and think it is adorable.   While there are several people who do not know how to pull this new look off, there are the few who can carry this fashion through very well. These people actually wear a dress, even if it is form fitting, and they make sure their booty is not hanging out for the world to see. Also, the leggings are not transparent, they are solid black and the skin of their legs is not visible.   This fashion, if not carried through properly, is not flattering and should be avoided at all costs. Sports Night

WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT

The church parking lot is full to the brim, the lights are blasting, and people are milling about. But this is not your typical Sunday morning. In fact, it is not Sunday at all, it is a Thursday evening. Sports Night, a community event that meets once a week at Lakeland Community Church, is in full swing.   “The whole thing is originally based around the sport. People who were not necessarily athletes, but had a desire to play the game. Now it’s just a group of friends. It used to be Sports Night for the sport, and now it’s Sports Night for the friends,” said regular attendee Sam Theismann. Theimann is also a member of Lakeland Community Church.   “Kids show up around 6:45, and we start playing at 7. We play with captains, so we pick teams, and play frisbee for about an hour. After that at around 8 pm, we play arena ball. It only goes for about 2 hours,” said Theismann.   Like all large groups, Sports Night has faced challenges with its size.   “Originally, we started out with numbers like 15 to 30. Now we have anywhere for 70 to 100,” Theismann said. “Sometimes we have too few, but the norm is that we have so many we can’t have solid competitive games.”   However, because of these massive numbers, a ministry has been born.   “Out of this has come Pro Deo. They hang out in the peripheral space, cook hot dogs, and provide a place for folks to hang out,” said Theismann.

Say This Not That: Break Ups GREAT TIPS ON THAT TO SAY AND WHAT NOT TO SAY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO END A RELATIONSHIP   Breakups can be difficult for both parties. The first thing that most teens do is break up with their girlfriend or boyfriend through a text message because they do not know how to say it face-to-face. What cowards! Here are some tips on how to end a relationship, or as most teens say, ‘Dumping’ someone:   What To Say: wTo keep a friendship in tact say “I think that we are better off being friends.” wTo show that there is still a caring feeling say “I do not want us to be together anymore, but if you ever need anything, call me.” wTo allow one some time to see if feelings have changed say “I just think that we need some time apart.” 10

HI.LIFE 2010

Social Night. Freshman Teri Kanies and Freshman Jane Orrick enjoy their Thursday evening at Lakeland’s sports night. Although they do not participate in the sports they appreciate the chance to socialize .“They hang out in the peripheral space, cook hot dogs, and provide a place for folks to hang out,” said Lakeland member Sam Theismann.

Pro Deo was started by Andy and Kylie Ewing. It is a community in Lee’s Summit that promotes strong character development and life skills among teens.   Theismann advocates Sports Night as a great weekly event to come make new relationships, hang out, and have a good time.   “I love playing sports with friends. It’s a place where athletes and non-athletes can be together for a good time. It’s a good place for exercise and good friends.”   While some might be wary because Sports Night takes place at a church, Theismann thinks that it does not make a difference.   “Church or not, this is where I’d be. I think it’s cool of Lakeland to give the space for free,” he said.   Whether its lights are shining down on the unique soccer field or on the stage Sunday morning, Lakeland’s doors are always open. by Haley Gillilan photo by Ben Nazworthy

wTo give someone a chance to find someone better say “I honestly feel that we should move on, you may even find someone better than me.” w Be truthful but not harsh, say “I feel bad but I no longer have feelings for you, I am sorry” What NOT to Say: w Being rude can create hard feelings avoid saying “I’m interested in someone else.” wThis is trying to be kind but it is still very harsh: “I love you, but I’m not IN LOVE with you.” wNever try to persuade the other person that breaking their heart was the right thing to do. “Trust me; I’m doing you a favor.” wIt is not okay to break up with someone just to have a chance to date their friend “I think that our relationship has come to an end, but can you hook me up with your friend?” wDo not say that it is their fault. “ Its not me, its you. This is all going down the drain.”   Break ups can create harsh feelings, and cause the other person to have a lot of pain. So instead of being mean and saying things that are not meant to be said, reconsider the break up lines, and try to put them the nicest way possible. by Kim Tabe

BALANCING THE IB DIPLOMA SCHEDULE WITH SPORTS

S

tudent athletes who take part in the I.B. Diploma have to overcome the challenges of balancing their time between hours of homework and sports practices.   “IB is the very best preparation for college, especially for competitive fields,” IB English teacher Vickie Metzler said.   Along with all of the IB classes, the students going for the diploma also have to have Theory of Knowledge.   “It is a zero hour because students schedules are busy,” Metzler said.   There are currently 16 students enrolled in the class and it is a weighted credit course.   In the class there are many subjects discussed.   “In Theory of Knowledge we discuss knowledge, and how we know things. We also discuss a little philosophy,” said Metzler.

Junior Brittni Gochnauer and Senior Julia Myers face these challenges everyday.   “I thought the IB Diploma would be challenging and interesting. I did it for college also,” Gochnauer said.   Gochnauer is involved in volleyball, orchestra, and takes an online class. She schedules her week with a calendar.   Senior Julia Myers did the IB Diploma because her brother did it. She also did it because it looks good to some colleges. Myers has six to seven hours of homework a night. Myers is also involved in volleyball, orchestra, NHS, Tiger Mentoring, and A+.   “Doing the IB diploma takes extra time; you have to give up sleep. One of the hardest parts of the IB Diploma is getting up for Theory of Knowledge, which is at 6:30,”

“Don’t do it. Don’t do it, don’t do it. I want you to live.” This advice from guidance counselor Rita Duvall to anyone contemplating suicide.   Teen depression and suicide tend to be topics of taboo in our society, and when brought up they can quickly polarize a setting. Many counselors and professionals agree that this is the product of a lack of exposure.   Even in the modern society that we live in, schools shy away from these dark subjects, simply because these topics are so grotesque. Most counselors would agree that this is a product for disaster because as many as one in five Americans are depressed. 14

They generally feel different, like they just want to cry all the time or sleep all the time. Something important to know is that friends are usually the first to see signs of teen depression. When kids say things like they wish they were dead, friends should take it seriously because something probably is going on with that person. Friends are also usually the first person kids that are depressed talk to, and that someone not only needs a friend, they need professional help,” Duvall said.   According to the Center for Disease

accepted by most people, but how people become depressed is often a mystery.   “The primary cause of depression could be a lot of things, and generally the causes are connected. The home life might affect how a student does in school which could then affect their home life, and our current economy certainly could have an effect,” guidance counselor Kristin Little said.   Depression is still a newer subject in the medical world and it is hard to label one cause of such a complex disorder.

Treatment

According to the CDC, medical treatment in most cases is successful and most people see results and improvement in their symptoms. Treatments such as medication, therapy, or even exercise are oftentimes put into place.   “Generally treatment targets a combination of mental health and

“‘Depression isn’t sadness, it’s consistent and doesn’t go away’” Control, the major symptoms of depression are hopelessness, guilt, restlessness, loss of interest, loss of energy, and thoughts of suicide. They also say that when these signs are detected by an individual of themselves or someone else, they should seek help immediately before these symptoms worsen.

What is it? What could cause it? There is a lot of dissimilarity between sadness and depression.   “Depression isn’t sadness, it’s consistent and doesn’t go away. Often times parents will say ‘you need to snap out of it,’ but in reality a depressed person can’t control it and needs special treatment. Just like if someone thought they were sick, they’d need to go to the doctor. Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable. Many times they’re genetic, but they still can be treated. People shouldn’t be afraid of treating depression,” Duvall said.   The fact that depression is real is

environmental health. Often times taking pills alone won’t help the problem and can in fact be harmful,” Little said.   Research is being carried out all throughout the medical world, and treatments are continually improving.

Suicide   Considered by many one of the most dreadful topics, the big ‘S’ word: suicide. The idea of taking one’s life is despised by almost all religions, and people everywhere. Due to this, suicide is hidden in society. Most people refuse to talk about the subject and this brings up the question asked by many counselors and professionals of why people should hide it.   “Suicide is one of the top three leading causes of death from people ages 1524. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” Duvall said.   Hearing that fact can change the concept of suicide, and its appearance in society.

Cyber Bullying   A new and ever increasing problem, cyber bullying, goes beyond the classic school yard bully that takes lunch money from easy prey. Many times, this new type of bullying comes in ways that most wouldn’t expect, such as spreading inappropriate pictures and texts, posting pictures about someone online, and tricking someone into revealing personal information. The worst part of the harassment is most of the time a person might not know they’re doing it. Victims of cyberbullying tend to react in different ways. Many times the victim might become depressed, and lose a social connection due to the bully. Other times a kid might go after the bully or bully someone else and get themselves into trouble.   Cyber bullying is definitely something to watch out for, and is prevalent everyday in kids lives. It’s something that can be, and needs to be stopped.

Teen depression is a very common thing, and many professionals say that its a increasing problem. Many teenagers have depressive symptoms everyday and yet are never treated. Not being afraid of the idea and embracing the problem might just be what society needs, and might just save the lives of teenagers everywhere. story by Jonah Graves photos by Stephanie Rowden

HIS AIRNESS IS BACK

Hereafter

A STORY ABOUT LOVE, LOSS & PSYCHICS

M

att Damon’s intense personality combined with the complex storyline was a perfect match for director Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter.   From the very beginning of this psychological thriller, the audience is taken on a wild goose chase for the answers about what really happens to people after they die. The movie opens with a terrifying and surprisingly realistic Tsunami scene, leaving an ambitious French journalist played by Cecile de France (Around the World in 80 Days) with an unbelievable experience and story to tell. She experienced death for several minutes and is desperate to get the answers as to what exactly she went through.   The story then cuts to London, where two twin brothers, played by Georgie and Frankie McLaren, are living with their drug-addicted mother. When tragedy strikes one of the brothers, the other is forced to change his life completely. The way the accident unfolds makes the audience feel an amazing amount of sympathy and shock toward the whole family.   Back in San Francisco, it is revealed to the audience that Damon has what some consider a gift; he, however, considers it a curse. He is able to communicate with the dead. It has affected his life more than he likes, ruining relationships and causing him stress. He begins a very hesitant relationship with a girl he meets in a night school cooking class, Bryce Dallas Howard (Spiderman 3), but it comes crashing down on him when she discovers his gift. He does a reading for her, and she can’t handle what she hears.   The three stories finally converge at the end, when all the characters happen to meet at a book fair in London. What happens there changes their lives, whether they realize it at first or not. Their uniting is what the movie really built up to.   Damon, the main focus of the story, does an excellent job of expressing the difficulty of living with something he doesn’t want, and he makes the audience experience his struggle with him. Cecile de France made a convincing news reporter, and her determination to get to the bottom of the mystery of death was delivered well. Appearing in their first film, the McLaren twins fit right in with the all-star cast, grabbing hold of the audience’s emotions from the getgo.   The Tsunami scene at the beginning gives the audience high hopes for the rest of the movie, but the movie slows down considerably after that. There was another big disaster scene in the subway that was wisely placed and well carried out. A car accident that took place was not quite as dramatic, but just as believable.   The story seemed to drag a little toward the middle, with useless business talks in France and unnecessary back-story, it was a great film with actors who brought the story to life. If people are looking for a movie with the right balance of humor, drama, and mystery, Hereafter should be at the top of their list. by Mary Jo Roccaro photo courtesy of Allied Marketing Group with expressed written permission

mazing graphics, realistic game situations, accurate ratings, and smooth game play are just some of many advantages of playing NBA 2K11. Recently overtaking the popular game Halo: Reach in the sales charts selling millions of copies, this is impressive to any gamer. Those who have played NBA 2K games in the past are in for a real surprise this year. 2k sports has taken care of most of the flaws like poor defense simulations, being accurate with team chemistry, and improving player movement. Teams really perform on the court as they do in actual NBA games. In the past on 2K games, players could not play defense at all and win a game; this year if the defense is not solid then your opponent will destroy you.   Gracing the NBA 2K11 cover this year is none other than his Airness Michael Jordan. This is his first time ever being in a video game, and 2K sports gets the honor. 2K fans will really have fun and appreciate the Jordan challenge mode. Gamers can relive the legendary games he played, like dropping 55 points on the Knicks returning from retirement. NBA 2K11 has created 10 memorable moments of MJ’s unforgettable games.      Controlling the rock has really been focused on and tightened up over previous games. With the proper timing and precise analog stick movement, you can perform dozens of different offensive moves. This year, it really allows the player to control everything.   For an example, if you go to dunk and it looks as if your defender is going to swat you away, you can move the analog stick in the direction you choose, attempting to create a new shot. It takes some practice to get it down.   NBA 2K11 still struggles with its online play though. Its hard to find a great connected game that doesn’t have a lagged game play. This has been a common problem with all of NBA 2K games that us players would like to get more improvement on next year. You can tell that 2K sports put some time into making Online play better, but the flaws of the past still linger in the game. Although the lag happens, the online play and options let alone make 2K11 worth the purchase.   NBA 2K11 is where amazing happens. Adding Michael Jordan to the game kills any competing basketball games. Good: Michael Jordan mode, and signature detail. Bad: Online lagging, and total player awareness. Roll It

THE MOVIE THAT’S WORTH YOUR MONEY THIS MONTH

by Entertainment Editor Lindsay Nelson veryone knows that age old expression ‘Life as we know it’ fill in the blank. Holly Berensen, Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) and Eric Messer, Josh Duhamel (Transformers) find themselves very familiar with that phrase in the romantic comedy Life as We Know It.   Holly runs her own bakery. She is a perfectionist, a planner, and does not stray from arrangements. Eric goes by his last name, Messer. He is a technical director who loves a pretty girl. He does and says what he wants when he wants. Holly’s best friend Alison is Messer’s best friend Peter’s girlfriend. Holly and Messer are set up on a date together. The two don’t even make it out of the driveway. They continue to put up with each other as their friends get closer, get married, and have a little girl Sophie.   One Spring evening, Holly and Messer’s lives take a wide turn. Peter and Alison are killed in a car accident. Much to Holly and Messer’s surprise, they were chosen as the guardians… together. They decide the arrangement can work somehow, that they should raise Sophie together because it is what Peter and Alison wanted.   Up to this point the movie was not anything to rave about. Duhamel is very nice to watch, and he and Heigl carry their roles just fine, but it had not quite pulled in more than maybe three stars.   The two begin to try to juggle Sophie and balancing their old lives. Messer has the most trouble adjusting. He loves Sophie but it takes him a couple digs from Holly to realize he needs to get his act together.   After that the movie finally starts to tug at the heart.   Holly and Messer go out for dinner, finally. When they get home, it’s safe to say, their relationship takes a big step forward. The audience sighs at how cute they are. Everything seems to be flowing as it should be. That is, until Messer is posed with a job opportunity. Holly, in her frustration, tells him to leave and take the job.   Now the movie pulls in its fourth star. For a moment, it is almost convincing that the two will stay separated. Scenes of Holly and Messer by themselves reveal that all hope is not lost. The two know that they have to raise Sophie together, and, simply, that they love each other.   With the minor cliche ‘dashing through the airport terminal’ climax, the romantic comedy comes to a close. Holly thinks Messer has left for good, only to find out he was waiting for her back at the house. Hugs are given, ‘I love you’ is said, and a family is made.

small group of travelers is on a quest to find a shaman in the north. The path on which they walk is littered with the remnants of a recent battle. The travelers have been warned that the Heavy Hitters are not kind to bystanders. Up ahead, two warriors stand in their way. This isn’t a war movie, this is Live Action Role Playing or LARPing.   LARPing is like improvisational acting. “The whole setting is our stage, and though someone came up with the plot, there is no script. The plot is laid out and the players take it from there,” Shaman Paul Smith said.   There is much more to the game than dressing up and hitting each other with big rubber swords. Prospective players meet with the director of the chapter to create their characters. There are many different classes, races, tribes, and cultures to choose from. In order for the LARP to work, they must become their characters.   “You have to think about how your character would react to a situation. Think about how your character was raised, and where they came from,” Shaman Alison Flannery said.   As with any game there are basic rules and guidelines to follow. Contact LARPing involves the use of weapons. Even though the weapons are heavily padded there is still the risk of injury.   “Keep your swings realistic; no more than two hits to the same place in a second. Only hit hard enough to touch your opponent, don’t take their head off. Also be sure to keep your swings low, head shots are not allowed and do not count,” Director Joe Bearden said.   Players are told to dress accordingly. They must be prepared for hot summer days and wet, rainy nights. Events are not cancelled due to rain or snow.   “If you were on a quest in the woods pursuing something, you wouldn’t just magically disappear from the woods. You would search for shelter of some kind,” Smith said.   LARPing is an experience like now other. A person can enter a world completely unlike anything they’ve experienced before. The more they play, the more their character develops and the greater adventures they have.   This time the two warriors are friendly and offer their help to the young travelers. They continue on their journey and pray that their next encounter doesn’t prove fatal.

hen someone hears the word “fashionable”, they usually think of somebody with an Ed Hardy shirt, Miss Me jeans tucked into Ugg boots, and a big jeweled handbag. But after meeting junior Kimmy McCarty, “fashionable” took on a whole new meaning. With her unique shoes and Harry Potter watch, McCarty is anything but mainstream.

Kimmy McCarty is known as the most fashionable girl at LSHS. “I wanted to be a fashion designer until a year ago,” McCarty said.

“I love my Doc Martin boots; they are fantastic. I also love my collection of dresses from Urban Outfitters, and great thrift store finds.”   There are, however, certain trends she does not like as well.   “Uggs, sweatpants, moccasins, silly bands, leggings, Hollister… there are so many trends I don’t like. They’re overdone and aren’t unique at all,” McCarty said.   Unique is definitely something McCarty knows about. She made her Homecoming dress last year not out of cloth… but duct tape.   “I was bored one night and frustrated because I had no idea what to wear for Homecoming. My grandma had sent me an email of girls who had made dresses out of duct tape. So I decided to do that. It was very spontaneous. The dress took me three months to make. It was one-shouldered, and

had a whole bunch of roses down the front. I did it all completely out of duct-tape, and I hand-sewed everything myself,” McCarty said.   McCarty enjoys expressing herself through fashion. “It’s my creative outlet. It’s really just the way I express myself, and it’s fun. I mean, why not?” “Why not” is definitely true. Maybe trade that Hollister shirt for something a little more classic. Or perhaps instead of reaching for that pair of moccasins, try something a little more unpredictable. Kimmy McCarty clearly knows that having a great style doesn’t mean following the crowd. photo and story by Jordan Julian

enior Jimmy Fischer’s style is unlike most guys’ at LSHS. While the average guy favors sweatpants and t-shirts, Fischer opts for a different, classier look.   Fischer describes his style as different.   “It’s a lot more nice and classy than most people are used to. It’s also somewhat weird,” Fischer said.   Fischer said that one thing really inspires his notso-average style.   “The stores I go to really in spire my style. Hot Topic and Target are some of my favorite stores. I especially like Forever 21 though, they have a lot of great clothing,” Fischer said.   Fischer gives good reason why he chooses to dress different than your typical high school boy.   “I like a cleaner, nicer look better than baggy sweatpants and a boxy hoodie. I don’t like to feel unclean all day,” Fischer said.   Besides “unclean”-like clothing, there are some trends Fischer doesn’t like, and for an interesting

reason.   “I think shorts on a guy are gross. Not only is it ugly, but you have to look at some dude’s pale, hairy legs. It’s tacky. I stick to jeans all year round,” Fischer said.   Jeans aren’t the only thing he favors when it comes to items in his closet.   “Cardigans. I love cardigans; they are a great piece of clothing. I also really like vests and skinny jeans,” Fischer said.   Jimmy Fischer’s out-of-the-ordinary style is not something to expect from just any guy. Fischer proves that a cleaner, classier look is not only more attractive than baggy sweatpants, but it is also overall more fashionable. by Jordan Julian photo by Laina Gunsallus

Making Things Happen

by Opinions Editor Kevin Adams

It has changed, hardly any student thinks it is absolutely for the better. But it might allow them to focus better.   In the previous year, the policy towards the use of iPods was completely different from what it is currently. Students were allowed to listen to their iPods when teachers allowed their use, but as always, some policies will be changed. Now, iPods are not allowed at all except in some art and P.E. classes.   All of this change to the policy began with a council of teachers that represented each department of the school. Some teachers argued that the use of iPods in their classes would help produce positive results for the students. In certain art, it allows the creative juices of students to flow, so iPods became allowed in some art classes. But just the same, some teachers argue that iPods detract from their classes, so iPods are not able to be used in those classes. All of the changes in the policy reflect the majority’s preferences in their classes.   Without any music throughout the day there are both positive and negative outcomes. While some may only see it as sitting in complete silence, others might find themselves more relaxed

in the quiet. Nobody is bugging the teacher about using their ipods during homework time. Nobody is shutting out their peers with headphones sticking in their ears. And nobody is blaring their music for the whole class to hear.   But seriously, what is so wrong with using an ipod. Nothing as long as it’s used at appropriate times and in moderation. Sure it may bug one or two people, but more students than that would benefit from being able to use their iPods in class. Even if one person decides to blare their music, other students are still able to get the work assigned finished. Maybe they just need to focus a little harder instead of concentrating on someone else’s music. Not to mention that when music is being listened to, it stimulates activity in the brain. And that’s what school is generally about anyway.   So it really would be beneficial to students to allow the use of iPods at the teacher’s discretions. This all wouldn’t be a problem if the students were a little more responsible when using their iPods in the first place.

IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR IPODS WERE ALLOWED. NOW THAT HAS ALL COME TO A HALT WITH A BRAND NEW POLICY.

Dear Editor,   One thing that I particularly hate is seeing people make out in the hallways. I am glad they have someone to be with, but no one cares, or really wants to se what should be something private between the two of you. I know that I am not the only one who think that, other students and teachers have shared their disgust in the matter. It does not make them look any cooler, it is just cheap and animalistic.   This should stop because it can make others uncomfortable. It may even stress them out and make them feel pressured to have a relationship depicted as such. But a true relationship is not based on physical display only. It is also a bad example to younger generations.   If PDA rules were more enforced, then it would cut back on this, or possibly just save the making out until after school ours, keeping everyone from being forced to watch. Teachers should be out in the hallways looking for and enforcing the rules. by Sophomore Lauren Schmidt

TAKING STEPS TO REMODEL THE SCHOOL LIBRARY FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF.

What do you think should be done to the school library?

The Library Media Center has a lack of lab space, carpet that is coming up, and a lack adequate of lighting. This dreary atmosphere in our library has many students and teachers desiring a more up to date feeling.   Librarian Sandy Stuart, has many ideas for a more modern library. One of the additions we could make to our media center would be a non-formal tiled area where students could be able to have drinks and talk. Another tacky aspect of the media center is our carpet. The carpet in the library is coming up from the floor so much it actually causes students to trip when they walk. We also need more lab space for students and classes to be able to work on projects or research on the web for their classes.   The library has some problems, but they can be fixed. The addition of a tiled area could be easy, maybe putting it near the entryway to the library before the carpet.   Carpet in the library is a disaster. In order to fix the shotgun mixed match feeling of the library, the old carpet could be ripped up and a fresh layer could be laid down that is consistent throughout the whole library.   Lab space is also required for the LSHS students to feel like they are in a modern library. Not only would the old computers need to be updated.   To renovate the Library Media Center would cost a lot of money. The librarians in our media center tried to get these renovations on the 2010 ballot but it failed to go through. The next ballot is the 2012 ballot and it is guaranteed our librarians will be trying there hardest to get the money to give our library a face lift.   Remodeling the library will cost a lot of money, however it is necessary to the learning atmosphere of LSHS students when nearly 2000 students go through the library daily.

“The whole library should be re-done, and there should also be a lounge area added so everyone can chill and read their books,” Freshman Morgan Bruce said.

“Yeah, we need some nice hard wood floors in there, and we need a place that sells food and more seating, comfortable seating at that,” Sophomore Jaylon Jones said.

“Our library should look more like a high school library, and not a elementary school library. There should be nice floors, art work on the wall, and a cafe,” Junior Jasmine Elston said. “It needs to look like Barns and Nobel with hardwood floors, music playing, a CD listening station, and a cafe,” Senior Christian Simpson said. by Timmy Snook

Does the Job Fit the Worker?

Media Malfunctions

DISTINGUISHING FACT FROM FICTION g Nathan Baker

YOUR WORK CAN DESCRIBE YOU g Marissa Rauker   Dog owners resemble their dogs, phones fit their owners, the kind of clothes you wear. All are things that define a person. But does a job define a person?   When thinking of a young doctor what comes to mind is a calm, collected person with their head on straight, and with their life all planned out. When looking at a young person working at a gas station what comes to mind is someone who is living paycheck to paycheck, and does not have a plan for what they want for their life. Unfortunately, society puts labels on people and their situations in life by the jobs they have. Today, people with four year college degrees are having to settle for minimum wage jobs because of the economy. So in that case it is not about what job that they want or that defines them as the person they are.   There are many tools that help show what would be a good job for a person. For example the PLAN test taken in high school that helps narrow the spectrum of what jobs are in the world after high school. But sometimes these tests show results like lumberjack and trash person, jobs that many high school kids and people can not relate to. From the time that they start middle school, many kids have had the idea that they need to know what career they want to pursue driven into their heads. However, this can be confusing and overwhelming. With the tools that are supposed to help with the decision making about what job would best suit someone, they may at times make it more difficult to decide.   When it comes to a career it is important to love it. From the time high school ends it will be another 50 or 60 years in the work force This is because the age of retirement is getting pushed back.   In high school, lots of teens get their first jobs. Sometimes these jobs do not have anything to do with their personality. In most cases teenagers will go were ever the money is. So in high school it is not so much of a factor to love a job or to find one that you can see yourself doing for a long time.   So the question, Does your job define you?, that is a question that can not be answered for everyone as a yes. As high school students, getting a job to support the things like going to the movies and eating out is important. So getting a job that pays money is the simple defining factor. But when it the time comes to pick a career, some people will have their ideal job that they love and totally fits them. Other people have the good old J.O.B. Where it simply pays the bills. No matter what the job is, it is good to go about the job with the best attitude possible.

POL ICY 22

It’s hard to trust people who gossip. They just can not tell a story like it is-they have to put a spin on it to make it more interesting.   An account of the fight that happened in the parking lot isn’t interesting by itself, not for gossipers. There has to be a motive for that fight, and the more enthralling the motive, the better the story. Maybe one of the kids involved was a white supremacist, or maybe the two kids were from rival underground gangs. It does not matter if the motive is true; it just has to be sensational.   This type of storytelling is fine when gossipers are the narrators. Reporters, on the other hand, must be held to a higher standard, especially on the national level. Sadly, the standard for most mass media outlets, like Fox News and MSNBC, is not much better.   In today’s mass media, objective reporting and fact checking have become replaced and diminished by the public’s craving for ‘sensational’ stories. American society no longer cares whether or not the news is 100 percent true, as long as they are entertained by what they are seeing.   A couple decades ago, such distortion of facts was rare and usually considered not newsworthy. Professional reporters were required to have a story verified by a couple of credible sources, and had to fact check all of the information they were putting into a story; today, reporters have transformed their stories from straight facts to opinionated pieces that use and slant the truth to suggest to their viewers and readers things that cannot be supported.   Evidence of this corruption is everywhere: A politician’s support of one particular cause, like healthcare reform, is adjusted by a reporter to insinuate that he or she is a socialist who supports a change in our democratic process. There is absolutely no proof that the politician supports socialism; but to the opinionated reporter, it is this lack of proof that justifies questioning that politician’s loyalty to the U.S. government.   So the question is, how can this corruption be cleansed from our media? At this point, a total change would be almost impossible without governmental regulations. However, that kind of intervention could never be accepted by the people. Instead, it falls upon the average citizens’ shoulders to become informed without being told what to believe and think.   Everyone can fact check the information he or she is given; everyone can listen to many sources to find the truth. It only takes a change in habit and an open mind.

Fresh Talent FRESHMAN SHOWCASES HER TENNIS SKILLS AT STATE

T

ess Herder started playing tennis at the age of seven and is now the number one girls tennis player at Lees Summit High School and it is only her freshman year. Playing not only for the girl’s tennis team, but also for an invite only club, Kansas City United Tennis, Herder, a freshman, went to state last weekend.   “My mom put me in lessons here for a few months. It was fun and the coaches were nice, I wouldn’t be able to play tennis without my parents. They encourage me and support me,” Herder said.   A nervous Herder stepped up her game in order to prepare for State in Springfield.   “I’ve been hitting with people and practicing a lot. I’ve also been running,” Herder said.   Herder’s season has been going well, winning around 19 matches out of the 25 that she has played.   “I’ve been doing well in my previous tournaments so i’ll just keep doing what i’ve been doing,” Herder said.   “What sets her apart is her experience. In the off season she plays 3 hours a day, 5 days a week--lots of hard work, lots of tennis,” varsity tennis coach Jamie Voelker said.   At State, Herder played three competitive matches, one even going through all three sets. Not only did Herder have to play against tougher opponents, but also against the wind.   “State was good; it was a good experience, I had lots of fun with the coaches,” Herder said   Herder hopes she will return to state again next year, this time with knowledge of what to expect. Not only does she have that to look forward to, but her college career as well.   “She could definitely do college tennis at a division 1 or a division 2 college,” Voelker said.   From humble beginnings, this short girl with a powerful swing is on her way to great success in tennis; amazing not only her peers but the student body as well.

Isagenix NEW DIET YIELDS IMPRESSIVE RESULTS   For the last 15 years David Vaughn always hid behind baggy shirts and jackets. Always saying that one day he would do something about the extra weight he had hanging around, Vaughn finally decided that his 2010 goal was to make a change. Discovering Isagenix would prove to be the answer to a new, fit, and confident Vaughn that had been missing for years.

“The main reason for selecting the Isagenix program was that Isagenix is not a diet. The Isagenix program is a revolutionary cleansing and fat-burning system,” Vaughn said.   Isagenix is a clinically-proven four-step cleansing and fat-burning system that helps fire-up your fat-melting metabolism for healthy weight loss and optimal health.   Vaughn learned about this Isagenix program through a friend who is an Independent Associate for Isagenix. After learning about the diet, Vaughn decided to set his goal of how much weight he would lose and how much time it should take.   “My goal was to lose 40 pounds in 90 days, but I actually lost 60 pounds in that 90 days,” Vaughn said.   Daily meals are no longer what individuals may of been used to. Meals will be much smaller but you will still feel full.   “Two of your daily meals consist of IsaLean shakes. These shakes are delicious, nutritionally complete meal replacements. Your other meal for the day is a “Sensible Meal” that consists of foods adding up to 400-600 calories,” Vaughn

said.   With this Isagenix program there is one thing that needs to be remembered. People cannot expect to lose weight without putting in a little effort. Exercise is also key in making this program work.   “If you are not exercising a minimum of 20-30 minutes a day, nothing is going to work for you. You have to get your metabolism going,” Vaughn said.   Most people will most likely be worried about the cost but the cost is something that buyers should not have to worry about at all.   “I really do not think Isagenix costs any more than what you are spending now for meals. Especially if you logged how much you spend a month on things such as fast food, smoothies, coffee, and donuts,” Vaughn said.   After years of trying so many other diets Vaughn can honestly say that Isagenix has been the most rewarding and easiest one he has gone through.   “Losing weight and getting into better physical condition is priceless. I just feel better. I heard the other day that all people that live to 100 have one thing in common, at 100 they are the same weight they were when they graduated high school. I hope to find out,” Vaughn said.   Vaughn is only one of millions who have experienced success with the Isagenix program. Vaughn will no longer have to feel ashamed of his body. He is a new and improved individual with a healthy and happy future.

CUTTING DOWN CONCUSSIONS IN CONTACT SPORTS

High Speed Chase. KC Chiefs Half Back Jamaal Charles sprints away from another Denver Bronco’s defender for part of his 489 total yards this season.

THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ARE OFF TO A HOT START, BUT STILL HAVE QUESTIONS OVER SOME STARTING PLAYERS

The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a great start to the 2010 season. As of now they are 4-2 and at the top of the AFC West conference, and they are holding a 2 game lead over everyone else in the division. The greatest improvement has been the offensive line, as the unit has only allowed three sacks all season (1st in NFL), have only been penalized 28 times (2nd in NFL), and also have the top ranked rushing offense in the NFL, averaging 176.5 yards per game this season. The thing that confuses many Chiefs fans is the starting running back situation.   Thomas Jones was acquired by Kansas City by way of free agency this past offseason and he is no doubt a very talented and experienced running back. Head coach Todd Haley has started the 11-year veteran for four of the six games this season and Jones has compiled 461 yards in total. Now, the Chiefs also have a running back by the name of Jamaal Charles. Charles has been an defensive nightmare ever since he burst on to the scene in late 2009 when he started the last ten games. In those games, Charles averaged 6.3 yards per carry and had a total of 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns. Charles was only one of a few backs who had over 1,000 yards last season, but the scary thing is all the other running backs had 16 games to accomplish that feat. Charles did it in 10. So far in 2010, Charles has only started two games, and he has compiled 489 yards while averaging 6.0 yards per carry.   Thomas Jones, however, only has 461 yards and is only averaging 4.7 yards per carry. The Chiefs decision to have Charles come off the bench puzzles many fans in Kansas City, and some of the play calling of another Charles in town has some Chiefs fans also confused. Charlie Weis was hired by Kansas City this offseason after the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator had a short, unsuccessful stint as head coach at the University of Notre Dame. Weis has the reputation for having a creative, yet aggressive offensive attack against defenses. Weis’ creativity was on display in the week 3 contest against the San Francisco 49ers.   Jamaal Charles took the snap from center, Charles handed the ball to a receiver, who then flipped the ball to Matt Cassel (Chiefs QB), who threw the ball fifty yards for the touchdown. Chiefs fans are excited about Weis’ offensive scheme. However, many play calls to Jones is what makes Chiefs fans pull their hair out. Jones, a power back, has often had toss plays called for him, which are plays for a speed back. This is where Jamaal should get the carries, but the play calling doesn’t reflect that.   All in all, Jamaal Charles gives the Chiefs a better chance to win football games. His uncanny combination of strength and speed give the Chiefs an ability to score every time he touches the football. The Chiefs would be better off leaving Charles in charge. by Nicholas Rellihan

Concussions in sports are fast becoming a frequent and serious injury across all contact sports, which is having many professional leagues scrambling to figure out how to cut down on them. The NFL has recently seen a big problem with helmet-to-helmet hits which has been a major role in player concussions and has caused many of these players to have to leave the game and sit on the sidelines. With the NFL trying hard to crack down on the concussions and “illegal” helmetto-helmet hits, they handed out major fines to three players after week six of the NFL. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was fined $75,000, New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather was fined $50,000, and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson was fined $50,000 all for what the NFL found as illegal hits to the head. Harrison has even comtemplated retiring because he did not think he could be an effective player in the NFL since they were being more strict on hits. But the NFL isn’t the only sport with this type of problem, the NHL is in a very similar situation in trying to eliminate as many hits to the head. Last season Florida Panthers’ David Booth missed 45 games due to concussion after being hit by Philadelphia Flyers’ Mike Richards from a shoulder to the head while not expecting it. Last Monday, Los Angeles Kings’ forward Dustin Brown was ejected from a game with a blow to the head of Minnesota Wild’s Antti Miettinen and could possibly face a fine or a suspension. Similar plays in these sports aren’t found in just the professionals though, they can also be found in college, high school, and possibly even middle school, which shows the physical nature of the game. The NFL applauded players in week seven for what they believed as a much “improved and clean game”. But it could easily have just been a week where we didn’t see the big hit, or someone leading with a helmet. As long as there are contact sports being played at such a high level, leagues can do as much crack down as they want, but there will still be major injuries and concussions. Better player safety will probably have to be found in something else besides stopping how players hit, it is a by Nathan Williams part of the game. JLABMAG.COM 25

Stadium Mania THE PROSPECT OF FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FOOTBALL STADIUM

F

ootball is the talk of the town is Lee’s Summit, but it is not because of the new head football coach, Eric Thomas, or even because of the team’s improved record. Football is the talk of the town because of the new turf, track, and the possibility of more improvements.   “In the future I would like to move the concession stand back to allow people to walk more freely,” principal Dr. John Faulkenberry said.   Moving the concession stand back would create plenty of room between it and the field, allowing fans attending the game to get to the bleachers without fighting through a mob of impatient and hungry people waiting to get their food.   “I would like to move the press box over to the home side bleachers,” assistant football coach Manny Williams said.   Moving the concession stand, the press box, and moving the speakers to the end zone are all ways that the stadium could be improved, but besides convenience and ease there is more than one reason to improve the stadium.   “I think improving the stadium would improve moral,” Williams said.   Improving moral and school spirit have always been a goal for each and every school in the country, and schools do anything to improve the atmosphere

at their sporting events.   “We have a good stadium, fans, and a good team which all help make the atmosphere at our football games great. I would put the atmosphere at our school up against any team,” Faulkenberry said.   Although the football coaches and faculty would like to improve the stadium, there are other needs that the school and school district need to improve first.   “We want to have a good athletic facility, but there are bigger needs in the school district right now,” Faulkenberry said.   The school district already helped the three high schools by installing the new turf, giving each school it’s own personal identity and is now looking onward to other issues.   The new turf, coach, the improved record, and the hope of even more improvements has the town pumped up and talking about football, but before anything can happen with the stadium, other issues need to be addressed first. by Derek Brooks photos by Zach Harris
