Text Troubles Dangers of Texting   Click, click, click. Thatís the sound that

Texting has become popular over the past few years. Americans send nearly 30 billion text messages a month. People do not think that there are any risks attached to it. 16 percent of texters between the ages of 16 and 24 suffer from discomfort in their hands.   Dr. Robert Menz, a leading Australian physician, has been working hard on trying to get cell phone carriers to put warning labels on cell phone boxes about the danger of texting. He believes too much texting can lead to DeQuervains tenosynovitis or texting tendonitis.   The diagnosis of texting tendonitis was made when people were complaining about a sharp shooting pain in their ¶ÇÂÈ ©ºÃ¹ÄÃ¾É¾È ¾È ¾Ãij¶Â¶ɾÄà Ļ ¶ tendon caused by the overuse of thumbs

while texting caused by repeated strain. They get a painful lump in their forearm and the forearm starts to swell. Excessive texting requires more of the human thumb than it was designed to do. Tendonitis can also be caused by excessive video game playing.   Students can also get tendonitis around their ankle, knee, shoulder, hand, and foot from sports by not stretching properly or using poor sporting technique.   Applying ice packs regularly for the IJÇÈÉ ¸ÄÊÅÁº Ä» ¹¶ÎÈ ¸¶Ã ¶ÁÁºË¾¶Éº ɽº swelling and pain. People should also rest the forearm instead of working through the pain, which can make it worse. Another solution is to use both thumbs to text instead of the one thumb that is

normally used. Also, do not spend hours at a time text messaging.   Most cases of tendonitis will recover completely, but if not treated correctly it can lead to a rupture of the tendon.   The sound of clicking buttons and musical tones are always a joy to listen to, but too much texting could really give students the painful texting tendonitis that nobody wants to have.

Save Place: Synergy House is a place for teens to go when in need. Business cards (above) provide locations of all the Synergy Houses in the area.

Place for Troubled Teens   When Alkeihla, 18, had no place to go after her mother kicked her out, Synergy House provided her with shelter. The company has been around for more than thirty years. ìSynergy House pro vides a safe place for teenagers in crisis or childrenís disputes and use individual and family therapy to them back on track,î said Synergy House worker Amber. Problems occur unexpectedly no one truly knows what the future has in store whether that may be good or bad. Family relationships may fall or break apart, but sometimes apologies and time are not enough.   Alkeihla left home Saturday £Ä˺·ºÇ Ħ¢Î IJÇÈÉ Ã¾¼½É was hectic, I called them at

And when I got there, they ½¶¹ º IJÁÁ¾Ã¼ ÄÊÉ ¶ÁÁ ɽ¾È Å¶ÅºÇ work even though I was tired, but they had a bed ready for me and stuff.î She describes her new schedule. Alkeihla wakes up at seven thirty to eat breakfast, afterwards she does her chores, and goes to class/group. ìGroup is some times unnecessary and sometimes itís okay. We watch movies, talk, or use collages to talk about life.î Then after group she eats lunch, cleans her mess, and has free time before and after dinner.   ìIts like summer camp or summer school except you live there.î says Alkeihla.

She too agrees with Amber that Synergy House is a good, well-needed service. It provides families and teens with recourses to help them function better, provides them with temporary relief when tensions are high, and mediation when needed. ìOver three hundred teens a year come through and all of them walk away with some-

thing,î said Amber. For teens to get to Synergy House ɽºÎ ÂÊÈÉ IJÇÈÉ ¼ºÉ ÉÄ ¶ ȶ»º place. Teachers are use of iPods

reevaluating

Students could never have predicted a time like this would come. Teachers are voting on the use of iPods in classes and hallways during each passing period. On Oct. 16, art teacher Lisa Schieszer brought up the idea that the studentsí use of iPods should be reevaluated during a site-based team meeting.   ìIn the site-based team, each department has one teacher. This group of teachers takes ideas back to their department to vote on,î principal John Faulkenberry said.   The art department is more likely to change the current rules regarding iPod use in the classroom.   ìAll of the art department thought kids should be allowed to use iPods, because some who are easily distracted can focus better,î Schieszer said.   There are pros and cons to this possible new rule.   ìThere are some times, in certain classes, where it can stimulate creativity, help a student relax and focus on certain types of work,î Faulkenberry said.    Schieszer added another pro to the list.   ì A lot of talking can be distracting, but iPod use helps the students be quiet, focus, and shut everybody out,î Schieszer said.     There is one major con to this idea.   ìI donít want students to feel it is a right,î Faulkenberry said   Freshman Jon Foley has another idea.     ìI think itís stupid when you canít listen to your iPods, especially when youíre sitting there and the teachers either want us to sleep or just sit there. If you are taking notes, I know you are not supposed to then. If your working on homework or a project, I think you should be able to listen to your iPod,î Foley said.   The site-based team brought the topic up four years ago, but the teachers voted no.   ìThe teachers recognize how important these ¹ºË¾¸ºÈ ¶Çº ÉÄ ÈÉʹºÃÉÈ ¶Ã¹ ¶Çº ÉÇξü ÉÄ IJù ways to use them in class, but will not let them tear down our academic environment,î Faulkenberry said.   The use of iPods in the classroom is becoming a more likely privilege for students.

Television’s influence on teen pregnancy.

jlabmag.com

According to the Kansas City Starís article ì Study links teen pregnancy, TV tastesî, there are three shows young girls between ages 12-17 watch that are linked to pregnancy.   Pregnancies were very common with teens that regularly watched those three shows. They are, ìSex and the City,î ìThat 70ís Show,î and ìFriends.î   ìI watched all of those shows, they were really good ones,î senior Courtney Jenness said. Courtney gave birth to her son, Kolbe, in the summer of 2007. She was 16 when she received the news that she was pregnant.

According to the Kansas City Star, pregnancies were twice as common among those who watched such shows regularly, compared with teens that said they hardly ever saw them.   ìëSex and the Cityí sends out too much profanity, they talk about too many things that young girls should not see or know when they have not fully matured yet,î Jenness said.   Senior Ariane Meyers has similar »ººÁ¾Ã¼È ¶·ÄÊÉ É½º ¾Ãijʺøº Ä» © «   ìA lot of reality shows, MTV in general, send out the wrong message to girls, I would not let my kids watch shows that are so hip and into the drinking scene,î Meyers said.   Meyers is due to have a baby girl in Feb. 2009.

ìI have never seen an episode of ëSex and the City,í ëThat 70ís Show,í and ëFriends,í I would watch a little when I started high school, but they were never any of my favorite shows. I was more into ëBoymeets Worldí and ëSisterSister.í But I think the media has a lot to do with teen pregnancies,î Meyers said.   Both Jenness and Meyers have felt a connection to the show ìSecr et Life of the American Teenager.î   ìA lot of the scenes with the girl being pregnant, I can relate to, but most of it is all produced and its not the actual thing, they can make it too over dramatic or itís not dramatic enough,î Meyers said.   According to Meyers, teen pregnancies are not as big of a deal as they would have been 10 to 20 years ago, but itís still not right.

Thanksgiving Day Bust

Emergency back-up plan at the Ready   Most families have experienced Thanksgiving Day mishaps, whether it is a recipe gone bad or some other kind of disaster. Accidents and problems occur at random and do not discriminate on holidayís either.   However, most places are closed on Thanksgiving weekend to provide time for employees to spend this holiday with their own families, instead of wasting their valuable feasting time working. America’s mission to get kids eating better

1

It is in the news everywhere, on T.V., in our school, in magazines, and even on the Internet. All the buzz is about how Americaís youth are acquiring more and more bad eating habits. Studies show that over half of American children and teens are either obese or overweight. If the percentages keep going up, doctors say that the number of heart disease and diabetes carriers will triple. What children need is help with their battle of controlling what they eat by starting to eat better, getting plenty of rest, and exercising daily. But the most important thing of all is having a good, healthy diet. Eating healthily helps prevent numerous diseases and keeps the bodyís immune system up and going. But just because it is healthy does not mean a diet can only consist of vegetables or fruit. Most people are able to eat some things that arenít completely healthy without gaining weight, 8

southern-fried chicken, barbecued pork chops, salmon croquettes, or braised short ribs, paired with nine savory side dishes, can make any one groan in hearty appreciation.   To save the trouble and the risk of having a home-cooked Thanksgiving feast, take a drive, see the sights, and enjoy someone elseís cooking for a change. At least now they have to clean up everything, do the dishes, and now there wonít be any leftovers that usually last for weeks. !{Brooke Welsh} {Nicole}Kelleher

but it is still important to have good eating habits.   Schools have been taking action in cutting back how much and what we eat and drink by changing the drinks to diet and eliminating some beverages. They have also raised the prices of food in the vending machines, yet we still continue to buy enormous amounts of unnecessary food. Below are some healthy alternatives to what teens normally consume:

Breakfast:

Instead of a bowl of lucky charms or other sugary cereals, try a bowl of Rice Crispy with fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas.

Lunch:

Instead of pizza or a hamburger, try a turkey and veggie roll up and a piece of fruit.

!{Taryn Hall}

Dinner:

Instead of fried chicken or other fried meats, a good alternative would be either a grilled chicken breast or steak with some steamed veggies, or a salad.

Turkey Day Tips Celebrating Thanksgiving with various types of food.

This Thanksgiving Bambi is on the menu. So is Thumper. Tom will be there, too. ìI was invited to my brotherís for Thanksgiving. There was wild turkey and pheasant. It was not fun!î foreign language teacher Kathy Koonce said. Deer and rabbit were also on Koonceís menu. ìI have to have traditional meals. Heís a hunter, but his grandparents at least had mashed potatoes and gravy with their dinner. I donít get it!î Koonce said. Koonceís brother is welcome to come over to her place for Thanksgiving, but she is never going back to his house for a holiday anytime soon. ìI cook and bake. My brother is welcome to come over, but there will be no Bambi!î Thanksgiving is a holiday that is normally celebrated the same way every year but

some of the population is switching things up. Freshman Sadie Mobley, being a vegetarian, celebrates the same way as most typical Americans do. ìI just donít eat the turkey or any of the meat products.î ÄÌºËºÇ ¾É ¾È ¹¾»IJ¸ÊÁÉ »ÄÇ ¢Ä·ÁºÎ ÉÄ sit and watch, as everyone around her is devouring turkey, ham, rabbit, etc. ìI ím almost jealous sometimes because it all just looks so yummy,î Mobley said. ìIt is okay though because I still feel good for saving all the little turkeys.î Even with the fact that Mobleyís family ¾È ºÃ¼ÊÁIJü º¶É ̽¾Áº Ƚº ½¶È ÉÄ È¾É É½ºÇº and endure it, she still remains happy. ìI celebrate with my family and Thanksgiving is great.î Thanksgiving is a tradition Americans grow up with, but foreign exchange student Cristina Caraus is apprehensively ¶Ãɾ¸¾Å¶É¾Ã¼ ½ºÇ IJÇÈÉ ©½¶ÃÀȼ¾Ë¾Ã¼ ºËºÇ Caraus knows the origin of this holiday and the basics of what it is all about. ìI know families get together and itís like a big party,î Caraus said. Caraus clearly is excited to participate in such a fun holiday. ìI like all American holidays, and I think itíll be a good

experience because a lot of people talk about it,î Caraus said. Finally, a few tips for after that big Thanksgiving meal come from personal trainer, Lauren White. ì What I would recommend is to keep moving, maybe go for a walk with the family afterwards to work off that extra piece of pie. Do a turkey 5K race in the morning. Play some backyard football. Donít worry about lifting weights. Focus on moving. Do some cardio,î White said. These tips will help anyone feel a lot better by burning some of those extra carbs off. !{Mikayla Frommer}

Giving Thanks. Many students celebrate Thanksgiving differently, whether it be traditional or modern. Whichever way it is celebrated, they all share a sentimental value cherished by all walks of life. “I celebrate with my family and Thanksgiving is great,” freshman Sadie Mobley said. Thanksgiving has changed so much since it started, yet it still holds the same significance.

How to go from the medicine cabinet to old time remedies. Back in the day, most people did not have such things as Walgreens; they used natural remedies from wherever they had access, usually just in their own homes, for things like colds, sores, and scars. Here are some natural, fun, and easy ways to get rid of the medicine cabinet:

Goose grease:

For those colds, take the grease from a goose, put it in the Ǻ»Ç¾¼ºÇ¶ÉÄÇ ÈÄ ¾É ¸¶Ã IJÇ Á¾Àº butter, and rub on chest and bottom of feet. Within a couple of days the cold should go away.

Potatoes:

Cucumbers:

For those puffy eyes, place two cucumbers on each eye, and let them sit for an hour. The extract and coolness from the cucumber ɶÀºÈ ɽº ÅÊ»IJúÈÈ ¶Ì¶Î

Baking Soda:

This can be used for black eyes, slice the potato, and place on black area and let sit. This takes the blackness away within a few hours.

Used for horrible toothaches, applying baking soda to the gums always helps, especially for babies that are teething.

Honey:

Honey, Vinegar, and Lemons:

For horrible scars that wonít scab, take honey and place a small dot on the wound. Cover with a band-aid and the scar will be scabbed over, within 24 hours.

Honey, vinegar, and lemonsperfect for the sore throat, place these three ingredients in a teapot and let them heat, then drink as if it were tea. 1

Bond: Bold or Boring?

Entertainment ·

The spy is back, but not ready for this case...   The fall season has arrived. However, while rain and leaves descend downward, so does a sizzling action movie. Nothing greater to heat up moviegoers than receiving a plate full of one of the greatest spies in cinema: James Bond. The one and only unique British spy (as played by Daniel Craig), returns to the big screen in his highly anticipated Bond sequel, Quantum of Solace.   The plot screams of the general spy genre. James Bond is investigating ¶Ã¹ ÉÇξü ÉÄ IJù ÄÊÉ ÂÄǺ ¶·ÄÊÉ ¶ secret organization dubbed ëQuantumí. Unfortunately, with their own set of spies on the inside of the British Secret Service (also known as the MI6) and nearly everywhere, he fails to get valuable information for his superior, M (Judi ºÃ¸½~ Äù ¶ÁÈÄ »¶¸ºÈ ¾ÃɺÇöÁ ¶»ij¾¸É¾Äà for past actions, and for the death of a friend in Casino Royale. Bond is killing many of the leads that bring audiences back to the theme of revenge, which is ºËºÇ ºË¾¹ºÃÉ É½ÇÄʼ½ÄÊÉ É½º ºÃɾǺ IJÁ ¸É¾Ã¼ ¾È ¶Ã ¾ÂÅÄÇɶÃÉ ÆʶÁ¾ÉÎ ÉÄ ¶ IJÁ and has to be believable. Daniel Craig gives another good performance as James Bond, and Judi Dench plays her role adequately and makes one sense the dominant feeling she possesses. However, a great downside is how the villain is played out. The villain is a ruthless corporate businessman (Mathieu Almaric) that seeks to gain a seemingly barren wasteland. He is there to symbolize the greed of corporate executives in the world, which is seen as a noble cause to show a sad truth through a character. However, the feeling of a threatening Bond villain was very non-apparent in this character. When compared to the previous villain, this one was a little letdown. Also, the Bond girl

(Olga Kurylenko) didnít seem as sharp as ÅǺ˾ÄÊÈ ¼¾ÇÁÈ ¾Ã ɽº Äù ij¾¸ÀÈ Èʸ½ ¶È Halle Berry. Olga is not exactly a damsel, but she is not the deadly vixen that many of the past Bond girls have been, either. This might be a classic Bond motif that is diminishing.   A major point that is missing is the full usage of all the before mentioned motifs that have made the Bond movies so unique. In the usual James Bond movie, there are recurring themes (or motifs for the better term) that have become so intertwined in the Bond universe that they help make up a Bond movie. The classic bullet shot to the audienceís perspective accompanied by red pouring down the screen was not emphasized as

it had been in past movies.   Another thing that was lacking with the grand, highly architectural, villainous lair Ì¶È É½¶É ÂÄÈÉ Ä» ÄùĩÈ ºÃºÂ¾ºÈ ȶ¸Ç¾IJ¸º gratuitous amounts of money to show off their wealth. Although, there was a good, old compound run by hydrogen fuel cells. At least they are thinking green. A usual Bond theme is chases in many forms, including boat scenes, and ɽ¶ÉĩÈ ¹ºIJþɺÁÎ ¾Ã ɽº ÂÄ˾º Äù ¶ÁÈÄ has a new car in the opening that is also running on clean fuel. There also existed a lack of seduction. A recurring scene in ɽº ŶÈÉ Äù IJÁÂÈ ¾È ɽ¶É Äù ÌÄÊÁ¹ seduce a woman that was working for the antagonist of a movie and convert them to his side, showing both his stronger masculinity and persuasive skills than that of his enemy. Feeding America jlabmag.com

The economy has not been great for a few years now. Especially since the bailout, people are worried more than ever about losing their jobs. Therefore, working

individuals and families are cutting back on what they donate or buy. This is hurting food banks and organizations that feed citiznes all over America, leaving some individuals and families hungry.   In 2006, 35.5 million people were living in poverty, and in 2007 that number grew to an astonishing 37.5 million people. In one year two million people have been reduced to living in poverty. This is one of the worldís largest setbacks. There should not even be a setback. It is the responsibility of humans to reach out to others in need.   During the holidays some people get greedy, but people ¾Ã ÌÄÇȺ ȾÉʶɾÄÃÈ È½ÄÊÁ¹ ·º ɽÄʼ½É Ä» ÉÄÄ É ¾È ¹¾»IJ¸ÊÁÉ around Christmas to give and think about others when wanting to think about the things desired for, but everyone should have open hearts. Giving to others in need also makes one feel like a better person by knowing she has helped a person or family live for another day.   Poverty-stricken individuals are often stereotyped as bums that choose not to work. In 2006 the organization Feeding America surveyed and found that 16.8 million people were living in working-poor households (households that have a working member in them but still cannot make enough income to buy food and grocery supplies). They also took a survey on how many houses in a suburban area had a food insecure income and the result was 4.2 million households. Also, nine million children were served by the organization. These children and teens are being deprived of the nutrition needed to grow into healthy adults. Luckily organizations like Leeís Summit Social Services take donations and contributions.   Worrying about surviving another day without food is not a situation to take lightly. Help save lives by going to www.feedingamerica.org to donate a dollar that will provide twenty pounds of food or grocery store products to families and individuals. Also help supply local food banks by shopping at grocery stores like Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, and Super Saver. Just look for the foods marked that help contribute to the ìShop to End Hungerî program.   Let us all be grateful for what we have no matter how much or how little. Help people now when they need it the most.

Two-month relationships, driverís permits, and pads in the old folksí basement are all typical of the average teenager. Having fun is what those teen years is all about. That can change really fast when teenagers want to experience adult things. With adult actions comes adult consequences. One of those actions, sex, can completely change lives with repercussions like pregnancy, emotional problems, and sexual diseases. ¤Ãº Ä» ɽÄȺ ¹¾Èº¶ÈºÈ ¾È ɽº ʶà ÂÂÊÃĹºIJ¸¾ºÃ¸Î Virus (HIV). There are other ways to contract HIV, but sex is the most common. Although HIV can be treated to keep from developing into AIDS, it can still have a huge impact on anybody. Recently, there was an epidemic of HIV at £ÄǶùΠ¾¼½ ¨¸½ÄÄÁ ¾Ã ¨É ¡ÄÊ¾È ÇÄÊù IJ»ÉÎ ÈÉʹºÃÉÈ were tested positive for the virus. This can happen anywhere and all it takes is one person.   Most teenagers do not consider the consequences for anything they do, including sex, until it is too late. They need to wake up and realize that everything has an effect.   Similar morals can be found in the Bible or the idea of ¶·Èɾúøº ·ÊÉ É½ºÎ ·Äɽ ½¶Ëº ¶ ¶¿ÄÇ ij¶Ì ©½ºÎ Èɶù »ÄÇ any person saving him or herself until marriage to have sex. Marriage is not a prerequisite for sex. Both make it seem as if marriage somehow prevents sexual diseases, which it obviously does not do. Besides, a marriage can be done and undone just as fast as any other relationship.   The Bible should be read as a personal interpretation, not in a literal way. Although there are things in the Bible that modern day people might agree with, it was written quite a while ago and so, has some outdated material.   ëReadyí means several things though. It means that ɽºÇº ¾È ¶ IJöø¾¶Á ̶ΠĻ ÈÊÅÅÄÇɾü ¶ »¶Â¾ÁÎ ÄÇ ¸Ä˺Ǿü ¶ treatment. It also means that a person is emotionally stable and can handle anything from loneliness to anxiety. As everybody knows, every argument is multi-sided and there are many other points that have not been addressed in this article. There was only one reason for writing this: to inform when ëreadyí is. After all, it does not just apply to sex; it applies to teenagers getting their toes wet in the murky pool of the adult life. U{Max Belanger} {Meighan Walsh} 2

Teachers have to use discretion when discussing controversial topics, like politics. ìI get myself in a lot of trouble with that all the time. I tell them about my kids. many of them began to share their views more frequently.   Having these conversations during class is not necessarily a bad thing, as long they do not completely interrupt the learning process. Teachers and students have to keep in mind that the classroom is just thatóa classroom, not a political forum. Oftentimes, these discussions escalate into all-out arguments that last the entire class period.   Teachers have to be careful when they become involved in these discussions, and make sure they do not cross the line between sharing personal opinions and imposing their political views on students. If teachers choose to allow these conversations to take place in their classes, they should take the role of moderator, rather than becoming involved in the debates.   Teachers should also consider whether or not the classroom is the right place to discuss other topics besides politics. Religion is a relevant and provocative topic that can easily eat up time in the classroom and ºÃij¶Âº ɺÂźÇÈ ¢ÄÈÉ ÅÄÁ¾É¾¸¶Á ¹¾È¸ÊÈȾÄÃÈ ÌÄÊÁ¹ seem too careful if the topic regarding the interaction Ä» ¸½ÊǸ½ ¶Ã¹ Èɶɺ ̺Ǻ ¶Ëľ¹º¹ ºÈ¾¹ºÈ ɽ¾È Èź¸¾IJ¸ topic, the discussion of religion in the classroom is a dangerous ground to traverse. Strong beliefs can clash, heated words can be exchanged, and personal attacks can come into play. Teachers, in order to better prevent these personal arguments from occurring during class, should do their best to refrain from making their personal religious beliefs general knowledge if there is no educational value that can be derived from that discussion.   Finally, teachers should be especially cautious about discussing their students with other students. Teachers who wish to share experiences about their teaching histories should avoid naming students. Pointing out students, for good or bad reasons, without their consent is likely to cause embarrassment for them among their peers.   The teachers here are among the nationís best and brightest. The personal connections they forge continue to inspire students well into their adult years. The time and effort they put into the education of todayís generation is what makes Leeís Summit such an excellently rated school. The discretion they use when discussing potentially incendiary subjects will help to better further education by example.

High school is known to be full of misconceptions, but one stands out above the rest: reality. The real world is something that students are supposed to be preparing for, yet we continue to argue about who will take whom to that awesome John Knox party called prom. If a student were to ask random strangers about their high school experiences, that student would probably come across the same reactions. Uneasy laughter and a comment like ìFun, but Iíd never go back.î Why should high school be remembered only for that one big game and one night of really bad music and uncomfortable heels?   Everyone remembers middle school as a transitional place between being kids and becoming young adults. Major League baseball does testing. The NFL does testing. As a matter of fact, every professional sport in America runs tests for steroids. Division I collegeís test every year in every sport. Athletes are being tested at all levels, except for the most populated group of athletes in the country. High school athletes are told that steroids are bad and that they shouldnít do them. But, what is stopping them? Almost zero high schools do steroid testing. There are a select few schools that do random drug tests for substances such as marijuana, and even alcohol. But our athletes can cheat and get away with it. Mike Celizic of NBC sports thinks, ìIf you donít test for steroids, you are telling kids to go ahead and use them, because they wonít get caught.î ©½¾È ¾È ¶ ȺǾÄÊÈ ij¶Ì ¾Ã ÄÊÇ ½¾¼½ school sports system and mandatory steroid testing needs to be required for any and all high school athletes. In other countries around the globe , steroids are being cracked down on in every way. America is slowly getting there. It is being stopped in professional sports, but we need to cut to the source of the problem. High school athletes start taking roids, get addicted, then get kicked out of their college or pro sport. We are practically inviting them into addiction and allowing them to tear their body apart. The steroid problem needs to be stopped at the source. The only way to succeed in doing this is to begin testing high school athletes regularly. And start doing it now.

Last yearís seniors will be missed, but it is time for this yearís seniors to shine on the court.

The girlsí basketball team is looking to have a successful season, even though moving up a conference may present a challenge.   It is coach Brian Bubalo and assistant coach Chris Bobalís eighth year coaching girlsí basketball. This year is JV coach Casey Guilfoyleís fourth year. The C team coach, Kevin Pettit, and freshman coaches, Michael Russell and Kent Tipton, are returning from last year.   Bubalo likes how hard the 44 girls that attended the tryouts worked. He was impressed with the effort put forward by everyone. No one was cut as 15 girls ended up the ninth grade team, 10 on the C team, and 19 girls on JV/varsity team. The players on JV have a chance to compete for varsity time.   ìIt is fun to be on JV/varsity with upperclassman. ìIt is very competitive to earn a spot on varsity for anyone on JV. There are a lot of people capable of playing on varsity. Even the weaker teams in the conference are good, î Bubalo said.   Although all the teams in the conference will be good, the toughest games will be against Blue Springs and Liberty. Leeís Summit North junior defender Grace Cross had a split decision to make: attack the ball or try to funnel Laddish into another defender. This time, Cross chose wrong.   Senior defender Jessica Knapp recalls Laddishís highlight while describing that defending Laddish is an unpleasant experience. For Cross, it turned out to be a painful experience. Without touching Cross, Laddish made a lightning quick move. Cross went one way, her ankle went the other way resulting in a severe injury. Laddish, now a junior, has not only had the opportunity to showcase her skills in front of varsity fans, but also in front of international crowds.  Recently, Laddish tried out for the 17 and Under Womenís National World Cup team. The World Cup took place nearly eight thousand miles from ½Äº ¾Ã ɽǺº £ºÌ ¯º¶Á¶Ã¹ ¸¾É¾ºÈ ¡¶¹¹¾È½ ¾È ɽº IJÇÈÉ »ºÂ¶Áº Èĸ¸ºÇ ÅÁ¶ÎºÇ ÉÄ represent the Tigers in a World Cup. Not only were her surroundings different, so were the players.   ìEveryone was smarter and better with the ball,î Laddish said; comparing her World Cup opponents to those of her club team and high school opponents.   Laddish noted that she had to focus more during the World Cup than she normally had to. She put her headphones on tried to let the words of Lil Wayne and Akon calm her nerves.   ìI had never been that nervous before a game,î Laddish said.   Back in the 64063, girls head soccer coach Dave Wiebenga admits that coaching Laddish has been a honorable experience. He describes Laddish as someone easy to coach, a hard worker, and one who never puts herself above the team. This Thanksgiving is the time to thank Dad for enduring those boring practices and little-league games

Every cousin is there, and testosterone is in full force as every man in your family is glued to the game of pigskin on TV. ©½¶ÉĩÈ ¶ÁÁ IJú ¶Ã¹ ¹¶Ã¹Î ·ÊÉ ©½¶ÃÀȼ¾Ë¾Ã¼ ¾ÈÃĩÉ ÈÊÅÅÄȺ¹ ÉÄ be about any of that. So, each year, I focus on one thing to be thankful for.   In years past, my attention has been on petty stuff like Kansas City barbecue and college basketball. This year, though, I found something a lot more meaningful to focus on. Instead of loading up on potato casserole, I will be thanking my dad. ÉĩÈ »ÊÃÃÎ ·º¸¶ÊȺ ¼ÄĹ ÄÁĩ ¶¹ ÃºËºÇ Âº¶ÃÉ ÉÄ ·º ɽº IJǺ under my love for sports. In fact, he has never been much of a sports fan himself. But the moment he set up a basketball goal for his energetic three-year-old, he became an accomplice to my crime of sports obsession.   As a tot, we played together all the time. He tipped in my weak shots, let me steal the ball from him, and lifted me up so I could dunk. He was the greatest basketball player I had ever seen, and I thought he could play in the NBA. I was wrong of course, but to me, my dad was as good as Michael Jordan.   Soon, I became an addict, with a worn orange ball as my drug of choice. I was obsessed with professional basketball; and, even without access to cable, I found myself watching a heavy dose of games.   I had a pipe dream--actually, it was a hoop dream. I wanted to play professional basketball; and, even though my dad knew I never had a chance, he never killed my hopes.   Dadís knees kept getting weaker, but he never stopped playing H-O-R-S-E with me. When he moved the family to New Mexico, he immediately bought me a new basketball goal. And, even when practices were an hour away (in a part of town where English was always a second language), my dad made the drive with no complaints.   He showed up at nearly all of my games and paid attention because I was playing. He gave me tips after every time I played and made many fast-food stops to smooth over a tough loss.   Unlike me, my dad never cared about the game of basketball. He came and watched because he cared about me.   I got older and suffered cuts from middle-school teams, but Dad never told me to give up. As a freshman team manager, I never expected to play; but one night he woke me up, grinning from ear to ear.   ìYour coach called, and he wants you to play!î he beamed. ìYouíre going to get to play!î

Years have passed since then, and my sport has changed to tennis. Not surprisingly, however, my dadís support never faded.   The moment that I decided to change sports, he bought me shoes, lessons, a racquet, and dozens of balls. He got himself a racquet, too; and I love hitting the court to make him run around.   We still play basketball together, and he still canít beat me in H-O-R-S-E. Then again, none of that really matters. The fact that he keeps trying to take jump shots on his rickety, surgery-scarred knees is enough.   The ironic part is that he cannot stand the obsession that he started. My long sessions of watching basketball are met with constant remarks, and he doesnít understand where I got my love for sports.   ìDonít you have some homework to do or something?î he likes to ask. Then, he takes a seat, picks a team to root for, and watches the game with me.   So this Thursday, Iím going to have to leave my spot on the couch to someone else for awhile. My football-watching will take a back seat to thanking the man that accidentally started it all.   And I hope Iím not the only one. After all, my dad is only one of the millions of parents who has spent many hours and a nice chunk of change on their kidsí sports careers. There are plenty of other parents who have made the same ȶ¸Ç¾IJ¸º ¶Ã¹ ¹ºÈºÇ˺ ¶ ȾÂÅÁº ɽ¶ÃÀÈ   In a perfect world, every athlete would realize what took me years to understand.   My dad didnít drive to practices and games because he enjoyed watching basketball. He did it because he enjoyed watching me.   He did it because he loved me. 3
