FROM THE EDITOR

The interesting thing about it being the season of thankfulness and giving is that everything in wilderness is dying or preparing for a long bitter winter. This idea though is probably the exact reason for people being more thankful and giving, or at least why it started. When Thanksgiving first came into place, not yet a national holiday just a tradition, food was harder to come by when it got colder outside so people were often more thankful for the little they had, as well as being more giving to those in need.   In this day and age though, that thankfulness seems to have taken a new meaning, people are no longer as thankful for the simple things that sustain living from a day-today basis, like clean water, healthy food and a lot of it, a roof over one’s head, and many other things that people seem to take for granted. Nowadays people are more thankful for the luxuries they acquire, the vacations from work and school, more convenient ways to get work done, electronics and more; however, people have grown so accustomed to these things that are unnecessary for their survival that most of the time they just expect it.   People are becoming greedier and self-obsessed so much so that they are no longer thinking of the thankfulness and the giving that can fulfilling for some people. In a society that puts more value on having a lot than sharing a lot though, this is completely understandable. People are often all about getting the new thing, the next big thing, even if just a few short months earlier, that same person got what used to be the best thing ever. It ends up being almost like a competition to see who gets the newest things: who gets the new phone first, or the new update the soonest. It is all about the new, not about the actual product itself.    Another thing is that people nowadays in our society are rarely thankful for simple things such as the food they eat and the house they live in. This is not to say that no one is thankful anymore, there are plenty of people who are thankful for these things, it is just to say that people seem to be more thankful for the things that they do not need to live, such as phones, laptops, video games, and other electronic devices or unneeded things. Now it is all fine and dandy that people are thankful for these things, but people have just gotten away from the original reasons for Thanksgiving and the thankfulness surrounding it. This, of course, was thankful for what we now take for granted, food, shelter, good medical care, etc. People have often lost sight of this.   Even though these things happen, not all people are like this; However sometimes being a bit more thankful can be good at times. People should remember the simple things that are needed to get by that some people in the world do not ever have enough of.

<< Delightful Dayquil.

Nasal congestion, cough, soar throat, fever, headaches, minor aches and pains; Dayquil fights them all. While it is a medicine extraordinaire, students could avoid using Dayquil by washing their hands, thus creating less of a chance of catching a cold.

ot with a whimper, but with an achoo. Everyone knows the symptoms: stuffy or raw nose, obnoxious sneezing, and sore throat. Slowly, a cold seizes the body. It turns sounds to muffled aches and the nose to an oozing cave that echoes half like a dying trumpet, half like an empty ketchup bottle. Yes, we have all been there, but do not fear this wolf dressed in coughs, mucus, and a runny nose. Here are some tips to conquer the big, bad cold.   Cough drops and Dayquil only do so much and fall illness does not compare to skipping class. Sometimes the best cure is to take measures to skip out on sickness all together.   “Avoid close contact with sick individuals and practice good hand washing,” said registered nurse, Helen Enright.   Also, follow the common rule that has been scarred to the brain since kindergarten: sneeze and cough into your sleeve or arm. Additionally, it is a good idea to stay home if sick. Teachers and students alike will jump for joy when they do not catch a case of head pounding fever accompanied with a hit of death.   Tragically, even after the constant Germ-X trips and a fine, Lysol sheen covering every conceivable surface, a student can still fall ill.   “Some signs a cold is about

Methods to fend off fall illness... other than holing up at Granny’s house.

to take hold are stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, tiredness, and sometimes aches and pains,” Enright said.   So why do people seem to get sick more often in the fall? For once, blame education.   “Everybody goes back to school in the fall; the closer you are to other people, the easier it is to catch germs,” Enright said. “Sleep deprivation can also be a factor.”   Hear that couples of the world? Swapping spit is a bad thing. Do not mind a pesky relationship, though, for the common cold is a far greater nuisance. A person could shoo it away until their gums bleed, but a cold can be replaced by 199 other versions. Yes, over 200 different viruses can trigger the common cold, the most prominent being Rhinovirus, which starts in the nasal passageways. Sadly, the sick train does not stop here folks.   Enright said, “There are also other upper respiratory infections students can catch in the fall.”   Sinusitis: an infection of the nasal passageways; Laryngitis: inflammation of the larynx; and Rhinitis: inflammation of the naval cavity, all reside under the category of upper respiratory infection. Treatment, regardless of whether or not a person checks in with their health care provider, depends on the underlying cause of their sickness. Most of the time, pain killers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen work well to relieve a

sore throat or headache sometimes accompanied with these illnesses. Additionally, increase fluid intake and hit the sheets before 1:00 a.m. every school night.   For arguments sake, say a student did not wash their hands, and they decided to stay up late or wear themselves down. They are now perfect prey for the cunning upper respiratory infection.   Luckily, an average cold only lasts three to five days and recuperation rarely involves a trip to the doctor.   “Drink plenty of water/stay hydrated, eat healthy foods, and get plenty of sleep,” Enright said.   Sometimes hot drinks with honey and lemon can soothe the throat and temper other symptoms as well.   So students, the common cold may be the big, bad wolf of fall illnesses, but there is no need to fear. Just wash hands, eat healthy, and avoid others-- typical teenage stuff. Also, since it is fall, fall into a regular sleeping pattern. Turn off the new and improved iPhone and rest the body so it can fight a cold efficiently. Remember to cover a cough or sneeze and if truly sick, camp out at home for the day. Either way, rip off a cold’s wolf mask and see that behind all the snot, a healthy and mucus free person stares out. Not scary at all. Designed by Jesse Butler Written by Morgan Jenkins Photographs by Morgan Jenkins

Tales Old-Wive’s Tales:   Grandma Lied ”Do not go outside with wet hair, you will catch cold.”   FALSE.   Colds are caused by viruses within the environment, not actual cold weather. Wet hair or not, if a student decides to avoid hand washing or shuns other sanitary measures, they will have a much higher risk of contracting the common cold. “Feed a cold, starve a fever”   FALSE.   The main idea behind this myth, according to www.dukehealth.org, was if a person ate or drank, their body temperature would rise to fend off a cold; abstaining from food during a fever was thought to diminish the effects of high temperature. Today, gulping down some healthy sources of nutrients can build up the immune system, thus aiding in the prevention of contracting a cold. Starvation, regardless of symptoms, is never the answer.

People are on the sides getting sick, some people even may be crying. This sounds like a rough day. These are some things that actually happen to the people in ROTC when they entered the Raider Team every year. A lot of people say oh ROTC is easy all they do is march around, and flip guns, but that is not necessarily true. ROTC consists of so much more that people do not see or even experience.   “This is the first year ROTC is doing this thing called the Raider Team. The Raider Team is basically military training. We have two teams in which consist of about eight people in each team. Who came out this year are Michael Klingsick, Kyle Bohnstedt, Braidy Brooks, Aron Belcher, Roderick Perkins, Tanner Blayney, Quentin Jones, Evan Wilson, Breaja’ Ehlers, Greg Rule, Sierra McAninch, Racheal Wurtz, Gabe Davis Gabauer, Kaylynn ArshaqAli, Benjamin Sassaman, Joshua Ramsey, Ryan Timdall, and Christopher Anderson. We have one commander per team. The commander is like the leader they tell them what they are about to be faced with, and what they need to do to complete their

challenge and improve their times and the way they do it. We compete against different teams to see who can do things the fastest and smartest,” Colonel Milligan said.   What they do is Fitness training (fitness test) first thing in the morning, they run a 5K, which is three miles; they do a sit up test, a push up test, and many more tests. People get sick and throw up on the sides; some people may even pass out. A lot of people get blisters on their feet and become very sore. What they do next is training for military. They are timed on everything they do. Some things that they do are Land Navigation; which is where they use a map and navigate to points in the woods. Cross Country Rescue; which is they find a hurt individual and place them on a litter and take them to safety they go over a bridge and under barbwire and a lot more. 10K Road March is just where they do exactly what it says they march six miles. Leadership Challenge is for a person who earns it and does the best in their team and they just have to do a lot of different obstacles. River Crossing is where they cross the river by using a rope and its a

The raider teams crawl underneath the barbed wire in order to progress through the remainder of the obstacle course. The task may appear simple and easy at a glance, but the actual task is far more challenging than what anyone can imagine.

hundred foot span.   “We did a Mine Deactivation; which is where there is a simulated bomb and it must be removed from an area, but the teams must build a bridge out of wood and balance a member to gain access to the device, and we had the fastest time. We had Breaja Ehlers do this task and she did it in two minutes; which was the fastest time.   “Raider team is a really hard thing to do, we compete against many different teams this was out first time and I am glad I did it, it was a really fun but tough experience, you definitely have some challenges to face,” Quentin Jones said.   “You have to do so much for this. You can’t just say oh hey I want to do ROTC it looks easy and I want to join the Raider Team it looks fun. It is so much harder than that. We trained for so long and we trained a lot and hard. We trained ever morning and after school for this. We ran a lot did push ups all the time and just trained very hard,” Jones said.   “There are many things you can win like

fastest time, smartest way to do things, team that worked the hardest, team that worked the best together, and more. There is a leadership challenge in which one person from each team that did the best and earns the leadership challenge has to complete and obstacle and try to beat other people from other teams,” Jones said.   “We are definitely going to do Raider Team next year and from now on. I am glad that they found this out because it truly does show you what you are going into if you want to go in the Military. It trains you and gets you ready for some of the things you will be faced with. You for sure need to be in shape for something like the Raider Team and if you are not in shape for it well you will get there with how much training this requires and how much we do for it. We went into it not knowing what we were in for and it was a really tough thing to do. Next

time we go in we will know what we need to get ready for,” Jones said.   “Now that we did it once I think next time might be a little easier because we know what to do and we know how we should get ready. We will for sure be training a lot and getting ready for the next one. We want to win something next year and we will be working hard to achieve our goals. I think some more people should try it if they really want to go into the Military so they get a feel of what it will be like,” Jones said.   ROTC may look like it is not hard to many people but, let’s face it; it is a tough thing to do. They say don’t judge a book by its cover; well don’t judge something until you really try it. I bet one time the people in ROTC now may have thought oh it isn’t hard or I wont be but once they tried it, they found out that it is one hard thing to do and will get you ready for something you were not ready for. People that are in ROTC and have not tried Raider Team and want to really join the Military should go out for the Raider Team and try it, who knows maybe we will get a prize.

prepare.   “Two days before each meet the team all gathers to have a pasta party. It’s a lot of fun to just hang out and prepare. The night before I make sure I get all of my homework done and make sure that I get to bed early to get a lot of sleep so I am not tired the next day,” Drew said.  Joining the team not only helped Drew, but it also helped him improve as a swimmer by learning many new things from Coach Darmitzel.   “I have learned a lot of new strokes and techniques since I joined the team here. Coach Darmitzel has also taught me a lot of new things to help me improve as

a swimmer,” Drew said.   The time between meets is not easy, though; Drew does a lot of work and practice to help him improve before the next meet. He must persevere to become a better swimmer as well as to improve his speed to reach his goals.  “The hardest part about being a swimmer is just really having to work for my goals and always just training and trying to improve my techniques and become a better swimmer,” Drew said.   Sam Drew is already raising attention because of his ability as a swimmer, and he is still only a freshman. He has a long way to go and a lot more to prove with his time as a swimmer.

“My favorite part about being on the swim team here is just the team factor and the energy I draw from my teammates,” Drew said.

Already a Champion Tennis is no match for Tess Herder.

s the ball soars through the air, the server knows it will be inbounds. The ball bounces, and the other player swings and misses. The match is over: another victory.   Focus on where the ball is going to hit. That is something Tess Herder always says to herself before every tennis match. Tess Herder is the Tennis State Champion.   “I started playing Tennis when I was eight years old at LSHS tennis camp,” Herder said, “My mom put me in tennis camp and I loved it. I love the challenge of tennis, and it is just a lot of fun.”   Herder grew a passion for tennis and pursued being in the school team.   “I trained with Voelker before and after school. I would run six miles after school and practice all the time. Tennis is a lot harder than people think it is, and it is not only a girl sport. A lot of guys play it too,” Herder says.   Herder began to compete with the school. Soon she became the best in the state.   “I was very happy when I found out I was State Champion. It was good too see all my hard work pay off, and I was happy to represent our school,” Herder said.   Any state championship is difficult, but Herder did not let that get to her.   “Tess dominated the other girls. She never allowed her opponents a change to gain any kind of confidence in the matches. No matter what strategy they tried, Tess shut them down. She put in a ton of work and was very confident in herself,” Voelker said.   Tess started tennis when she was in elementary school. She came to a summer camp ran by Coach Harrellson at LSHS.   “She loved it and has been doing tennis since then,” PE

Tess Herder stands with Coach Jamie Voelker during halftime at the football game vs Lee’s Summit Northon Friday, October 11. teacher Jamie Voelker said.   Tess became more intense as she got older. She started to train with a group called Kansas City United Tennis (KCUT). This is an invitation-only training group that accepts only the top boys and girls in the KC area.   “Tess trained a lot of competative hours with KCUT. At high school practice, we focus on fine-tuning anything that needs work. We also do doubles. It is also important to be physically fit, so we do lots of fitness exercises,” Voelker said.   With this group, athletes practice and then compete in USTA (United States Tennis Association) tournaments throughout the year. Tess practiced and competed for school and then went back to KCUT during the high school off-season.   “There was some question

as to if she would even play high school tennis. I had people telling me how talented she was. She was a great player from day one. Her freshman year, she made it to state, but with a score of 0-2, which was disappointing for her. She came back her sophomore year and played two very long three-set matches. She really had to gut it out and I was amazed by her ability to stay mentally focused and win. It was truly one of the most amazing athletic feats I have seen. I wish more people could have seen that Friday. Then she just blew away her semifinal opponent in 45 minutes to get into the championship match. Unfortunately, she did not win that one; her opponent was really good about keeping it deep and Tess rarely was able to control the point. I did not have any expectations then, so second place was really awesome. She did not play her junior year

of high school. Instead she concentrated on KCUT training and USTA tournaments. While that was kind of a bummer, the reasoning behind it was solid and her family was great about communicating the whole situation. The idea was hers to come back and win a state championship her senior year, and that is what happened. I am proud of the fact that everyone was able to work together to do what was best for Tess. Tess is sticking with KCUT, training and competing in tournaments. She is bound to play for Drake University in college,” Voelker said.   Tess Herder has done a lot of hard wotk for something she loves, and it has paid off. Herder became State Champion and is going to Drake University to keep doing what she loves: tennis. Anything is possible with enough work and dedication. 15 PLAY HI+LIFE JLABMAG.COM

WHITE

These thespians gather around and listen to the very important instruction from Mr. Hensley.

There is no turning back. Once those lights are on and curtain is pulled the whole show is on the line. There are no cuts, no retakes. Everything depends on this moment.   A moment the entire cast of “White Christmas” has been preparing for since the first week of school. Months of hard work have been put into this moment. So much work has been put in that what is in front of the audiences eyes is only the tip of the theatrical iceberg.   Figuring out who will fit the characters the best of this production is the first job that needs to be accomplished. This process includes singing a memorized song, acting out a monologue, and dancing a dance number.   “I don’t really look at a students grade, just who can bring the best performance and can fit the character,” said Chris Munce the music director of White Christmas   This is most true with sophomore Kirsten Myers who got a lead role with Adee Dancy, Andrew Wright and Daniel Verschelden who are all seniors.   “It was little intimidating at first being a sophomore working with all seniors, but they were all really accepting of me, we became good friends, and I had learned a lot from them,” said Kirsten Myers.   Learning the show is the next step to making this spectacle come alive. It is also JLABMAG.COM HI+LIFE FOCUS 16

the most the most time consuming. Almost all of the leads in White Christmas say they wish they had learned their lines faster so they could go beyond the lines and focus on what the lines mean.   “We start in choir room reading over the music, and then gradually progress to moving around and mixing it with the choreography on the stage.” said Munce.   While the performers perfecting what is going be happening on stage there is a whole other group of talented teens perfecting what is going be happening under the stage in the pit.   “We are all a big family down here, I like being a part of the show without being on stage, even though sometimes it’s hard not to get distracted by what’s happening on stage and laugh at the jokes the actors are making.” pit member Mikayla Findlay said.   It is the job of the pit crew to help sound the performers amazing. Well there is also a bunch of groups that make the thespians look amazing. Hair and makeup is one of them. Sophomore Kirsten Myers sways to Senior Andrew Wright’s lead at a White Christmas rehearsal

“I first have the actors fill out questionnaire about their hair type, I also have to research what hairstyles were popular in the time period White Christmas takes place.” said hair and makeup crew head Madi Valentine.

CHRISTMAS

These pages are just the base of a spectacle that has taken months upon months to perfect and amaze many.   Getting people to come to the show and see how amazing everyone looks, and all the hard work that has been put in is also a very important aspect of putting a show together.   “It really takes the whole cast to advertise the show and getting the word out, but what I do is call and email businesses and newspapers hoping they will let us advertise with them,” said Kara Strickler public relations crew head.   Lighting is crucial to a show. The wrong kind of lighting could ruin the mood and believability of a show. Luckily the theater department has Andrew Wright to make sure the lighting is just Wright.   “Being lighting crew can get really stressful at times. Wondering if it is all come together like it is supposed too. There are a million

little things going on silently behind the scenes that could go wrong. I actually wanted to be able to make it snow on the audience but it was not going work so it is only going snow on stage,” said light crew head Andrew Wright.   Things going wrong are nothing new to the theater world. So much goes into a production it is almost a guarantee that something will slip up.   “I was actually able to get us a performance at October fest. It started to rain on us though, but the show kept going,” said Strickler   Some of accidents though can be genuinely humorous and could be a constant joke between friends for years.   “There is a toilet in the PAC and one time someone flushed it during a show and everyone could hear and smell it,” said Valentine.   The fear of something going wrong is very common especially on opening night.   “For any actor there is always the fear of not being prepared enough. It is a feeling that an performer has to overcome,” said Daniel Verschelden lead in White Christmas.   In a show everybody depends on everybody. A production can be like dominoes. If one person makes a mistake it could affect the entire reality of a show.   “ I am always really nervous that I will mess up a line or someone else will mess up a line and I will have to cover for them,” said Adee Dancy lead in White Christmas.   There are lots of things that could go wrong in one moment. One moment could affect the entire show. So that’s why so many people put so much work in that one moment. If all goes well that one moment could be more special than having a White Christmas. This gathering of musicians from all the around the school known as the pit, performs all the necessary music for White Christmas 17 FOCUS HI+LIFE JLABMAG.COM

Shining a Light on on Andrew Wright

ndrew Wright adjusts his mic, makes one quick check with the stage manager and struts onto the stage to become Phil Davis, a lead from White Christmas. As soon as he does, the spotlights bathe him in color attempting to show every part and emotion of the scene. He knows this makes the audience understand the tension and love of the scene because he set these lights up. “Different colors convey different moods and that is the whole goal of lighting,” Lighting crew head and senior, Andrew Wright said. Wright has been the crew head of the lighting department since his sophomore year and now does every production for the school district. “What people don’t understand about lighting is the hours of work that is put into each production to make it the best it can be,” Wright said. Wright says he loves lights because it is not as concrete as other backstage groups. Lights are abstract and can change the mood with just a color. “It’s very hard to balance being a lead with being the lighting crew head. We have to program each of the lights with different cues so that I don’t need to be up in the booth during the musical.” Said Wright. Luckily for Wright, theatre teacher Micah Hensley gives plenty of time and understanding towards his predicament. “I worked professionally with the American Heart Theatre while they were still open,” said Wright. It is common knowledge that Wright is the most knowledgable person in the school on the subject of lighting, and even Hensley has to rely on his expertise. “I am actually employed by the school district to do their lights, like the Veterans Day assembly” Wright said. Wright said that although he is going to school to be an architect, lighting will always have a place in his heart, as will his theatre career.

he first mistake people make is freezing up. Not being able to open their mouth, and just do it. Take a deep breath, inhale, exhale, don’t think… just do. Close your eyes, and start. Becoming a different person on stage can be easy stapes of just one, two, three. Keep calm, and act on.   “Theatre is such an underappreciated Art. A lot of people get scared to do what they love because it’s so underappreciated. I just want people to know, that no matter what people will say about what you do never let people get in the way of stopping what you love,” senior Daniel Verschelden said.   He is so dedicated to theatre life, and is very involved with the schools Theatre

Department.   “My very first show was seven or eight, this academy I went to I decided to perform a song “ Josephs Coat,”. The director told me “ hey your gonna be Joseph,” which is terrible because I had really bad stage fright.   Stage fright is very common among teenagers, having to stand up in front of a class or a group of people having to read a paper just gives people the urge to freeze up.   “To people who have stage fright, people get into their heads the audience is gonna be disappointed. If you stay confident and practice what you rehearse you’ll be fine,” Senior Verschelden said.   Verschelden has been in 31 shows all starting at the age of 10.

“I’m pursuing Musical Theatre for College I don’t know where I wanna go yet, because I still have to audition, but I’m definetley going to pursue a career in it.”   Verscheleden has been through a tragic obstacle in his life that helped him become a better person even more, and a better actor. Daniel has one special show that really means a lot to him, and that stays close to his heart.   “ My favorite show I’ve been in is Joseph, in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, it’s a really fun entertaining show it’s a been dream of mine since I started theatre. One of my co-stars that was in the show was recently killed, and it will always be close to my heart.”

“Walkin Home” is the IB theatre class One Act for this year, which is student directed, and he is the director of this upcoming show.   “ I think it’s gonna be a good show, it’s a great story and has a beautiful message”. Verschelden said. He feels directing is helping   him become a better actor, learn how to take on different jobs in the Theatre world, and get him ready for College life.   “ It really depends, directing a one act is different from directing a full- act, a lot more simple it’s really fun. Walkin Home will be showcased at Lees Summit North December 6 and 7 at seven p.m. Keep calm, and show off. Close your eyes, and just do it!

Sierra Setley shows off her artistic talents in over 7 apects of student life   Spending long hours working on a single piece of artwork, making sure that every detail is precise, is perfectly normal to her it’s nearly a daily routine. Sierra has been artistically gifted for quite some time now, dating back to elementary school.   “In elementary school my first project won an award... which was a fire truck,” Setley stated. With the support of her family, especially her grandmother, she has grown as both an artist and young lady.   “Well, of course my parents have supported me, but my aunt and definitely my grandmother have helped me. My grandmother taught me a lot, like different techniques,” Setley said.   More than anything she focuses her artwork on portraits instead of nature.   “I get my inspiration from pop culture, magazines and mostly the people around me,” Setley stated.   She has worked hard to become the person that

she is. Not only is she a fantastic artist, but she can also multitask .   She’s involved in multiple extracurricular activities. Setley does varsity cheer, student senate, NAHS, FCCLA and tiger mentoring. On top of all of this, she strives to meet her goal of a 4.0 GPA.   What most people don’t know about Sierra is that she’s interested in much more than just art.   “I’m also into fashion, I like to keep up with different designers, Setley said.   Every honors art student needs a theme for their portfolio and Setley’s is very interesting.   “My theme is body adornments,” Setley stated.   Of course, every artist has their up and downs and she tries her best to dodge the bullet of a certain obstacle that artist have to overcome.   “Artist block is the worst, it’s like you just can’t think of an idea... Or when making a small mistake can ruin it. Once, someone spilled

water all over my friends art project on accident, things like that can ruin all my hard work,” Setley said.   Although Setley hasn’t recently entered any contest, her artwork is still known and seen. Not that many people know someone that can handle seven different activities at once... But Sierra Setley does, herself.

A Closer Look: Sydne Anschutz Being an IB diploma candidate certainly has its challenges.   As an extremely involved high school student who is insistent upon success, junior Sydne Anschutz is experienced with the hardships of balancing academic and extra-curricular life. Although, from her experience she has gained valuable insight into the great rewards of a well-rounded life– she decided it was a risk worth exploring.   As busy as the junior year is, Anschutz is also involved in many activities.   “I am involved in Tiger Act, German club, Youth in Government, National German Honor Society, the A+ program, the Medical Explorers Program, scholar bowl, JV and Varsity Golf, I play the Piano, and I am an IB Diploma candidate,” Anschutz said.   After high school, Anschutz hopes to attend college to study medicine to become a physician.   With constraints on time available to stay involved, combined with a challenging academic schedule, Anschutz had to master time management.   “The key to managing your time is to do your homework the day it is assigned; don’t procrastinate,” Anschutz said.     Anschutz states that she studies 3 ½ hours a night minimum, with more time per night if there is a test coming up. Then, she has about ten hours a week to spend on her extracurricular activities.   Adding to her challenging schedule is the fact that Sydne travels between LSHS and Lee’s Summit West to attend classes at both buildings. This scenario came about because she wished to take both IB Chemistry and IB Biology, but these classes were offered at the same time at this school.   “I talked to Ms. Metzler and told her I was having a hard time deciding which science to take, so she suggested taking both if it would fit in my schedule. I changed things around and made it work,” Anschutz said.   There are many varying degrees of motivation among students, both with academics and extra-curriculars. The challenges a student chooses to conquer will affect their use of time and energy.   Anschutz shows a commitment to her goals despite constraints, and shows the energy to conquer her many tasks. STARBUCKS COFFEE Written by: Maddy Wylie Photos by Kennedy Potter Design by: Megan Terry

Coffee can be purchased many places, but the question that keeps being asked is where the best place to get the bang for the buck.   Perhaps it is the extra energy that coffee provides that draws people to it. Then again it could be the way the smell seems to work it’s way into the heart of people to open up old memories, yet still it could simply be the taste of the warm drink that has caused it to work it’s way into the everyday lives of students.   If students are looking for a place where they can settle down and finish that long English essay due tomorrow, but want to enjoy a nice cup of Joe at the same time then

Starbucks is the place to be. No matter which one you go to they all have a nice, welcoming layout that provides a sense of comfort and relaxation that allow you to focus on the task at hand. Maybe one of the only flaws of the Starbucks atmosphere is the amount of traffic that it draws in, which increases the chances of seeing a friend or classmate.   Starbucks coffee cups can be found in the hand of many students all throughout the day, each with a different name and flavor. It is hard to say,

though, that this is actually the best coffee in town. The coffee is often lacking in the amount of creamer many students prefer and the naming of the cup sizes can confuse any first timer. In a recent blind taste testing of students Starbucks coffee was highly disliked when compared to the Quick Trip coffees. Personal preferences do vary though, so it is suggested that students try testing both coffees first, before deciding which is better.

QUIK TRIP COFFEE

When looking for a place to grab a cup of coffee for every morning, Starbucks is a place that should be a special treat. Taking the size of the cup and quality of the coffee into consideration it can be argued that the prices are slightly high.   It is safe to say that quick trip is not the place to go if students want to actually sit down to drink a coffee, however that doesn’t mean that is a totally bad place to buy one. The little gas station has a fast pace feel that can sometimes be overwhelming but helps keep students moving if they are in a rush to get to school. Quick Trip has strategically placed the donuts and coffee machines together to make students have easy access and a smooth trip to the counter.   Although it may come from a place that also

sells scratch off tickets, Quick Trip coffee is not one to be looked over. One of the perks is the customers getting to add the amount of creamer they wish to the coffee. Instead of having to ask the already rushed worker at Starbucks to add just another squirt, each patron simply hits the button again and waits until the amount desired has been added.   Keeping the fact that Quick Trip is a gas station and not made for the sole purpose of selling coffee in mind, the prices are quite reasonable. The prices

These blind taste test results may shock you

obviously depend on the size of the cup that each customer is purchasing. Since the patrons are buying the coffee for the reason for just having coffee there is no need to worry about paying for brand names.   No matter where the coffee is where is bought at there is one fact that holds true, coffee will continue to unite people and create warm memories for many generations to come.

What’s ‘The Code’ got to do with it? Written by: Breona Porter

Most people have heard of girl code and guy code- but what does it really mean?

T

hrowing her stuffed panda at the wall, with a mouthful of chocolate ice cream she cries “Why hasn’t he called me back? It’s been two whole days!” Meanwhile ‘he’ is searching his wallet for the rest of the $30 needed for his date with the schools’ new catch-of-the-week. Just as ‘he’ was reeling her in,’ he’ looked up helplessly and asked “Do you um….think you could spot me a 10 ...or three?” Imagine if we could know exactly how the opposite sex operates. We know all the right moves to make. All the right things to say, and the right things we claim to be ‘interested in’, in hopes that he or she may like you that much more. For girls, this means no more emotional breakdowns because you got ‘friend zoned’, dumped, or cheated on. For guys, this basically means no more

getting called names by your exgirlfriends’ best friend because you ‘played her’. The closest man has come to this dreamy idea is the famous Girl/Guy Code. So…what is Girl/Guy Code anyway? According to urbandictionary.com, Girl Code is ‘the code of guidelines that girls must obey in order to not get kicked out of the community’. Guy Code on the other hand is ‘the code by which each and every man must and will follow. The code is for a man’s eyes only; any woman found guilty of reading the guy code will no longer be communicated with by any member of the male gender, unless rated an 8 or higher on the official scale of hotness…… Any man found breaking the guy code will no longer be considered a man for the next 24 hours.’

Senior Ashley Tillmon told us her version of Girl Code. “Don’t mess with your friends’ boyfriend and always compliment your friends to make them feel good.” Senior Terrae Wright also gave an interesting, but a more and more common perspective. “Always take care of yourself. I follow guy code more than anything. I have more boy tendencies and a lot more guy friends. Girls are too sensitive.” When asked the main rules of Guy Code, junior Roderick Perkins Jr. said “Rule number 1: never tell a girl your guy code.” He later opened up and added “Never mess with your homies’ girl.” Perkins Jr. also said that Guy Code is “just something you naturally follow, and are taught more about by older people.” Senior Casey Slaughter also gave me some insight on the male mind. “Only date a best friends’

ex if you have permission. Guys should always pay for everything on dates, and kissing on the 1st date isn’t appropriate. Its gives the guy something to look forward to.” Writing this story has helped the realization of several things. One of them being that guys take Guy Code more seriously than girls do. That’s why there is the more frequent phenomenon among girls called ‘drama’. I’ve also come to the realization that girls drag things out if Girl Code is broken, and guys might just have a little scuffle and call it a day. The most interesting thing I came to conclude was that ‘Girl Code’ and ‘Guy Code’ are just the shortened version of each genders idea of trust, loyalty, and common sense.

HI+LIFE Dear Hi+Life Readers,

It is true that something one person does has an effect on someone else. Children and adults alike are constantly shaping others’ opinions, giving them ideas, dreams, and experiences. However, it is difficult to gauge what that effect is on another person.   Recently, there was a Canadian man who walked into his local coffee shop, purchased coffee and a donut for himself, and then proceeded to buy large coffees for the next 500 customers. He refused recognition and would not give a reason for this random act of kindness; he merely bought the coffee with his debit card and left, presumably with a smile on his face. The manager of the Tim Hortons in Canada has the $895.28 transaction receipt to prove it.   Starbucks also participated in a promotion that had a similar goal of kindness. If a customer bought a coffee for the person behind them, they would receive a free tall brewed coffee the next time they came in. The promotion was held during the government shutdown. Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, hoped that this would bring his customers and citizens together, even a government officials were struggling to do the same.   Acts of kindness, however, do not have to be financially motivated.   Sophomore Chuck Copeland recalled that his favorite random act of kindness to another was a simple gesture. As usual, he was going to lunch. By chance, he saw a kid was sitting at a table across from him,

quietly eating alone.   “I’d never really noticed it before, but he seemed kind of lonely,” Copeland said. “I asked if my friends wanted to go sit by him, and they said no. So I picked up my stuff and sat with him, then eventually brought him back to our table.”   Copeland chose to do something nice for someone he did not really know. Over time, they became friends, and the Good Samaritan remained constant in the fact that he did not want reward. He wasn’t even very keen on the idea of recognition. He just wanted the kid to be happy.   Acts of kindness should not be inspired by the possibility of attention, nor by personal gain. They need to be given freely, because people need to realize that in a world where everything comes at a price, kindness should not.   The students of today are the leaders of tomorrow; they hold the world in their very hands. They will change it, form it, and evolve it. When they leave this earth, they will be followed by a legacy, as all people are. That being said, it becomes their choice as to what kind of legacy it is – a legacy inspired by kindness and giving, or a legacy inspired by greed and selfishness. Do something nice this season, because the best way to give thanks is to give to those who need it, even if it is only a compliment in passing or a gesture to make someone feel special. The amount of lives that can be changed is endless, and the time to start changing these lives is right now.
