COOKING TIPS - Always read your recipes from start to finish before starting any step in the directions. This will allow you to make sure you have every ingredient or piece of equipment you need. - have everything in your recipe measured and prepped before beginning to cook. This makes the cooking process much easier and faster. - Never cook on high heat - when you’re in a hurry to cook a meal, cooking on high heat will not speed up your cooking, only burn your food. Turn your pan on medium heat and give it a few minutes to warm up. Your food will still cook quickly and won’t stick to the pan. - Give your pan enough time to heat up - heat your pan on medium heat and give it several minutes to heat up. The longer it heats, the less likely your food will stick to your pan and cook more evenly. - Always salt your cooking liquid - whether it’s for pasta, rice, etc, adding salt to your water adds flavor - Use the right measuring equipment - liquid measuring cups and dry measuring cups are different - make sure to use the correct equipment based on the ingredient or else your ingredients may be measured inaccurately

Dinner: Spinach Ricotta Lasagna in a Mug Total time: 12 minutes servings: 1

Ingredients

1/2 fresh lasagna sheet 2 1/2 cups (75g) baby spinach, roughly chopped 1/4 medium yellow bell pepper, diced 1/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 3 large basil leaves, finely chopped (optional) 1/4 tsp kosher salt 1/8 tsp granulated garlic 6 TBS pasta sauce or tomato sauce 1/3 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella

Directions

1. Cut the lasagna sheet in strips. Place the pasta sheets into a bowl, and pour boiling hot water in it, until it covers all the pieces. Set the pasta pieces aside. 2. Chop the spinach and place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover the top with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it for ventilation. Microwave for 1 minute. Take out the spinach and let it rest. 3. Grate the mozzarella while you wait for the spinach to cool. 4. Mix the spinach with the ricotta, pepper, granulated garlic, and salt. Set mixture aside. 5. Pour 2 tablespoons of pasta sauce at the bottom of the mug. Top with a piece of softened pasta sheet. Add some spinach mixture, 2 tablespoons of mozzarella, and a pasta sheet. Continue building the lasagna, ending with a layer of pasta sheet at the top. Sprinkle mozzarella over the pasta. 6. Microwave everything for 1 minute 30 seconds. Check to make sure that the mozzarella is melted. If it isn’t, continue microwaving at 15-second intervals until the cheese is fully melted.

Webslinger -

S

enior Bailey Murphy started sophomore year learning to code websites in. Ever since she was little it was something she would have liked to do and eventually, that became reality. Starting anew in any area can be difficult, but for Murphy, web design came at an accelerated pace.   “I knew nothing when I first started, but I caught on well.” Murphy said.   From the start, the learning curve was tough, but things got easier eventually.   “It gets easier once you get into the groove and get used to what you’re doing,” Murphy said.   Designing websites for two years, Murphy looks to take computer science to college.

High school will give her an edge in college as she will already have her footing in computer science.   “I’m familiar with it and won’t be caught off guard in college. Some people come in not knowing anything,” Murphy said.   Computer Science is a tool, the most used application for it is web design.   “It can be applied anywhere.” Murphy said.   Murphy plans to become a software engineer because of the wide range of uses in the real world.   “If you’ve ever seen ‘The Intern’, that’s basically what I’m trying to become.” said Murphy. Murphy is one of few people who has

learned computer science. This is due to the difficult entry bar from the first time learning.   “It’s difficult, so you have to adapt well. There is lots of math, and that scares some people but it is easier once you get practice.” Murphy said.   It’s not all bleak hardships however,

as the most rewarding part of web design is looking at the finished product.   “It feels very good because it’s something you worked so hard and long on since the projects we do in class are big,” Murphy said.

ith her camera and tripod in hand Prosperity Roddy is on her way to new opportunities at DePaul University in Chicago after her time in the class that inspired her, Film.   “My intro year I was really just interested in how movies were made and the aspects of films and how creative you can get while making films,” Roddy said.   Ranging from commercials to short films, Roddy

A

has done it all and is ready to take the next step forward in her film journey.   “I know in college it is a lot different than what we do here, but I would really like to get into making movies some day and hopefully make an Oscar winning movie even though that is really far ahead of where I am,” Roddy said.   Roddy also would not mind stepping out from behind the camera to another role in film

production.   “It would be cool to be a camera operator, but I would also like to be a director also some day because there are not that many women directors in Hollywood and I want to change that,” Roddy said.   With the artistic freedom that comes with being a director one needs to be able to communicate to their crew efficiently, and Film has taught Roddy the skills.   “Film has taught me how to be more outspoken because I used to be really shy. This class forces you to talk and meet new people. It has taught me how to get out there, be more outgoing, and that it is ok to talk and not be shy, Roddy

said.   Even amidst the excitement of the future Roddy will miss who brought her to this point.   “I will miss Mrs. McDonald because she has just taught me how to be the best student I can be. She believed in me being a good student and she is always there. So I’m really going to miss her and I’m going to miss my friends too of course,” Roddy said.   The months of filming for Tiger Broadcast have led up to this point, and now Roddy makes her move to DePaul University to begin the next chapter in her life.

senior Alec O’Connor said.   When Alec was younger he started to mow not only his yard but other’s as well. He did this so that he was always moving and never doing nothing.   “I wanted to have lots of money,”

O’Connor said.   Being broke is a feeling that no one likes. While having a mowing company Alec has acquired a good amount of money.   “Finding clients and staying motivated can be hard at points.” O’Connor said.   Owning a business

is not always as easy as it may seem. Finding clients can be a struggle sometimes. Motivation is hard sometimes too. Getting up in the morning to go mow yards all day does not seem like the most exciting thing

Painting Gambit -

A

rt, a foundation of the world we live in has no bigger fan than Susan Flower. Through eight years of making art from paintings to ceramic, she has had over three hundred art pieces displayed. Her art was not always as appreciated as it is today however, at her young age in elementary school, she was told her art was awful and should stop trying.   Being told that that her art would never amount to anything only improved her determination to create more works.   “Being told told ‘ you can’t ‘ pushed me to do more,” Flower said.   She loves art and would not let some teacher tell her that her works were pointless.   After Flowers’

first piece was displayed in her freshman year, she was awed and her feeling towards art was only bolstered. “It was really rewarding to see and walk past it daily,” Flower said. Having worked with the different types of art, Flower developed a confidence in her 2D painting.   “It’s easy to slap some paint on something.” Flower said.   Despite the ease of painting, ceramics is Flower’s favorite. Flower spent three weeks creating her personal favorite work of art, a clay installation. This piece was full of woodland, with animals scattered about and nature on full display.   For each piece, new inspiration has to be obtained.

“I get inspiration from what’s going on in my life,” Flower said.   With vivid images coming from harsh times and raw emotion, art comes from a personal place for Flower.   “My internal struggles really help me make my art.” Flower said.   From such a personal attachment to art, Flower plans to pursue art in college, looking to master in ceramics, and achieving a Ph,D. in art history.   Why art is important holds a tremendous meaning to Flower as she spoke

that a person can do. But, Alec fights the urge to sleep in almost every weekend to go make that money.   “My equipment brakes sometimes and that can be a real setback,” O’Connor said.   Equipment failures may not happen all the time, but when is does it is not the easiest thing to deal with. Fixing the

equipment himself can save money and time, but diagnosing that problem can take a while too. Having two Wright Standers helps though, when one breaks he uses the other one for the time being.   “I plan on mowing for a maximum of four more years,” O’Connor said. Mowing is something that Alec wants to

do for the rest of his life. He plans on mowing while he goes to college, and then he wants to pursue a job in chemical engineering.   “I have chosen to go to UMKC for college,” O’Connor said.   UMKC is close and not very expensive which will save Alec lots of money. UMKC also has a

wholeheartedly,   “Who would’ve designed your house? Car? Shoes? Art separates people from animals and adds depth to life. Art is saturated, we see it everyday everywhere we look. I mean just look at the coke ads we see.” Flower said.   Flower feels art is “necessary as a human” and sees the need for art in daily life.   “All the things we see were designed by an artist.” Flower said.

great chemistry department. This will serve Alec well, for what he wants a degree in chemistry. Starting a business may not be the easiest thing to do, but with motivation and patience anything is possible.

he cars used in N.A.S.C.A.R. require 950 man-hours of welding before the rubber of the tires even hit the asphalt of the road. Now, Bryce Mahaney might not be spending all of his days welding racecars together, but welding is in his genes for sure.   “My two cousins weld for the railroad, and I saw some cool things that they made,” Mahaney said.   Mahaney enjoyed seeing his two cousins weld a dune buggy. From then on

he knew he wanted to do something similar in the future.   “I have always enjoyed working with my hands,” Mahaney said.   Freshman year, not wanting to do much bookwork, Mahaney took Metal Technology. During his time in Metal Technology, Mahaney experienced welding hands on and soon fell in love with it. “I was told about a welding class out at Herndon, and went to try it out my …. Year,” Mahaney said. He enjoyed Herndon so much that he

decided to go there all day his senior year, instead of going to Lee’s Summit High School and sitting through classes all day. With three years experience and 5 certifications, Mahaney knows what he is worth and will not work for what he feels is less than ideal. “I will not take any job the pays less that twenty dollars an hour,” Mahaney said.   Manual labor jobs are overlooked and can seem like the type of job that someone unintelligent can have, but that is far from the truth. Manual labor jobs can require more skill and expertise than some jobs that simply require answering a phone or entering items into a computer.   “I feel that manual labor is very important,” Mahaney said.   With manual labor

usually come bigger pay.   Like always, teachers can have big influences on their students. Along with peers and parents, they will help push the student to strive for perfection and do the most with what the student has learned.   “My welding teacher, Mr. Wise, has had a big influence on me,” Mahaney said.   Without much interest in school; Bryce has decided to not go to college. He feels that he is prepared to go straight into the workforce and make all the money that he can.

erforming vocal music on stage is something senior Olivia Riley has known she wanted to do from a very young age.   “When I was four years old, I sang in a local church talent competition. I had a fever and was so shy, so I made my mom stand next to me while i sang a solo. I ended up getting first place,” Riley said.   Through her years of high school choir, Riley fought hard to gain her place at the top of the program. The Arion award is awarded to one student in each music program, and is voted on by students. The recipient of the award is chosen to represent the best model student the program has to offer.   “When he said my name, it felt like I was dreaming.” Riley said.   Riley has known about the award since seventh grade at her first Parade of Choirs where the award is presented each year.   “I saw that as a seventh grader and thought that it would be very cool to receive.   Freshman year, I started really getting into choir and imagining myself winning that [award],

and when I did it was kind of unbelievable,” Riley said.   When it comes to her singing, Riley has always found her inspiration through her late grandmother.   “She was the first person I ever sang for. I was two years old and would go to her house every day while my mom was working and I would perform for her in her living room. She encouraged me.” Riley said.  Riley’s grandmother passed away freshman year, and Riley found the choir room to be the place she could go to to find peace.   “I would go into a choir rehearsal during that really hard time. I would go in and just forget about everything and feel very refreshed afterwards. This is when I realized I had found where I was supposed to be.” Riley said.   Riley has found singing not only to be her go-to stress reliever, but as being helpful in tougher situations too.   “It’s kind of my coping mechanism. Usually before I have a big conversation with someone, I sing. It honestly helps me get my thoughts straight. It clears

my mind, and when I’m singing, my mind stops racing and it is really therapeutic.” Riley said.   As for future plans, Riley seeks to continue with her strong passion for music.   “I am going to the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music to study music education. I would love to become an elementary school music teacher or sing in professional choir.” Riley said.   While her excitement for the future is evident, there are certainly things about high school that Riley will miss.   “I’m going to miss the people. I have made a family and have best friends in choir. Every one that I trust is in Sounds of Summit, and I think it will be different singing without them.” Riley said.   Bonding with people and creating music is something that Riley finds most special about choir.   “You’re all trying to sound like one voice, there are so many different voices and personalities. You really get to know these people as you all are communicating at such a vulnerable level.” Riley said.

Riley has also learned many life lessons in choir, that are not directly tied to music itself.   “I think the idea of coming together to work for a common goal is the most ideal and romantic part about making music. I think that it has really taught me patience. It teaches you that you aren’t the most important person and that everyone contributes differently.” Riley said.   Through her years of choir, Olivia Riley has found a great family and home, and learned many lifelong lessons. written by
