PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE

S

pring is finally here — although it hardly seems appropriate to say that after the unseasonably warm winter we had.

This cheerful time of year triggers thoughts of renewal and rebirth for many; there’s something about the milder weather that offers new hope to those who accept it. This is especially true for me this spring as I begin to make positive modifications within my own life. I’m embracing these changes with open arms, and looking forward to whatever unfolds this season and beyond. Someone I love dearly recently lost someone very special to him. This loss, as tragic as it is, has inspired me to look at this spring issue with a renewed sense of passion for the work we do. Perhaps it’s cliché, but life is short. I believe it’s so important to do what you love, say what you mean and move in a direction that brings you happiness. And that’s exactly what I intend to do each and every day.

Today, do something that brings you happiness. Perhaps it’s taking your dog for a walk along the breathtaking shores of Lake Ontario, or dining out with friends at one of the Limestone City’s amazing restaurants. One of my favourite things to do is enjoy a visit with a good friend while sipping on a handcrafted latte from one of our many amazing locally-owned cafes. I truly hope you take some time to relax and breathe deep this season. Enjoy all our amazing city has to offer — maybe while reading a copy of ReFINEd Kingston at your favourite haunt. s spring is a perfect time to transform our lives, the articles throughout this issue of ReFINEd Kingston will provide tips to help you make some transformations of your own — whether it’s a home renovation you’ve been meaning to tackle for years, or an exercise regimen you keep putting off. There’s no better time than now, so lace up those running shoes and get going! This issue was particularly fun for me to put together, because it’s filled with amazing fashion and beauty tips that will be sure to inspire you to freshen up your look this season. As a woman who owns more lipsticks than anyone should be allowed to have, it was fun to speak with makeup artists from our city about what’s trending this season in the world of makeup. Of course, to my husband’s dismay, I had to do my due diligence and test out these new trends, which added to my ever-growing collection of lipstick that is slowly but surely taking over our bathroom counter. As we welcome this season of newness, what better place is there to celebrate than at a spa? Gracing our cover is Joanne Burke, the owner of Napanee’s Touch of Wellness. With determination, talent and kindness, Burke has created a place known as a total relaxation destination. It was an absolute pleasure chatting with Burke — who is widely known around town for her kindhearted spirit — over a cup of tea. She talked about how the spa came to be, and the incredible team that makes her business the success it is today. Whether you enjoy massages, pedicures or facials (or all three!), each rejuvenating treatment at Touch of Wellness will no doubt refresh, relax and restore you. I was treated to a pedicure following our interview, and didn’t want to leave afterwards! Born and raised in Napanee, it thrills me to see how businesses such as this have transformed my hometown.

Now that the cold days of winter are behind us, grab a chair on the patio of one of Kingston’s incredible restaurants and enjoy reading this latest issue of ReFINEd Kingston in the warm sunshine. Happy spring! Katrina

Flatter Yourself Shapewear For Instant Body Confidence By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

T

he season of sexy dresses, itty-bitty shorts, and barely-there tops is upon us. If you want to channel the supreme sexiness of curvy burlesque queen Dita Von Teese, these shapewear options have you covered. Waist Cinchers If you want to lose inches around your waist in a matter of seconds, waist cinchers help you achieve a slim silhouette so you can rock a fitted dress or tailored suit with confidence. Look for products that go all the way up to your bra line to maximize the slimming effect — bonus points if you can hook the undergarment to your bra so it doesn’t slip down. Shaping Slips If you’re after a sexily sculpted silhouette, opt for a shaping slip. These essential undergarments do triple duty, smoothing your hips, bottom and stomach — they can mean the difference between that dress or skirt you just bought looking OK on you, or looking fabulous. Buy a shaping slip in a

nude colour and in black — you’ll wear this time and time again all year long.

All-In-One Body Shaper Looking to transform your entire silhouette? Shop for an all-in-one body shaper — and don’t settle for the least expensive option. Make this all-over body slimmer an investment piece; it will last you for years to come. Some companies even make shapewear with sleeves that help to slim your arms. If you have a pear shape (you’re smaller on top and larger on the bottom), look for options that allow you to choose your own bra to avoid flattening your chest. Tummy Control Briefs Perfect for trousers and pencil skirts, tummy control briefs are great for everyday support and control under your work clothes. This season, shop for your tummy-control briefs in a nude colour — self-confidence pairs perfectly with your favourite white pants and capris. RK

Don’t be tempted to go down a size when you’re purchasing shapewear. Many women think smaller sizes offer more control, but the opposite is true: you’ll end up with bunching fabric, and you’ll be uncomfortable. Invest in ‘good’ quality support-wear. There is nothing more annoying than fabric that doesn’t stay put or rolls up and cuts off circulation that’s not sexy!

fun

and

fresh spring makeup By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

ReFINEdKINGSTON

“There is something exciting about transitioning from dark winter makeup to a bright new spring look,” says Erin Berry, Pro Makeup Coach. “It’s refreshing to shed some winter layers and let your natural glow shine through. After being bundled up all winter long, we need to spice up our look with some violet cheeks, electric eyes and cherry red lips. Maybe not all at the same time, of course.”

Prep for Success The key to great makeup, no matter what the season, is prepping the skin prior to the application of makeup, says Amanda Alves, makeup artist and hairstyling apprentice at James Brett Coiffure. “You’re never going to have good makeup if you don’t prepare it to start off with,” she warns. “Everyone needs to be in a good regimen of cleansing, toning, moisturizing and exfoliating, and making sure we are using the right products.”

Stay on Trend “The hottest makeup trends for spring 2016 are edgy eyes, natural dewy skin and cherry red lips,” says Berry. “Cobalt blue for the eyes and brow art are also going to be a popular this year.” If you tend to shy away from such bold looks, you can still be on trend; it’s just about making the look your own. “Take inspiration from what you see and add your own imagination to it,” says Berry. “For example, the cobalt blue fad for your eyes can be achieved by adding just a hint of blue liner to the bottom lash line smudged with a black or brown liner on the edge to mute it out a bit. People get so caught up in trying to duplicate looks instead of just getting inspired and making it their own.”

Makeup Through the Ages Whether you’re 25 or 65, it can be difficult to figure out what’s best when it comes to enhancing your facial features with cosmetics. Grab your best brushes, and read on for tips on how to master makeup through the ages.

20s “Cobalt blue on the eyes is making a comeback this spring, and I am so excited about it,” says Berry. “Incorporate a little or a lot, spring is the time to experiment with colour.” Cherry lips and glitter brows are also a hot spring trend for the younger generation. “Get inspired and add your own imagination to make the look your own.”

30s Transitioning from your 20s to your 30s can be a difficult time, says Berry, but adding a little edge to your look can be just what you need to feel a little more confident. Before anything else, remember that taking care of your skin is vital during these years. This means applying a sunscreen and a great moisturizer every single day. “Now is the time to focus on skincare; you might notice your skin is less hydrated,” says Alves.

ReFINEdKINGSTON

11

When it comes to makeup, don’t be afraid to experiment with some colour. “Cool tone violet shades are going to be popular this year and can be worn on the eyes, lips and cheeks,” says Berry. “It’s up to you to play around and have fun with them.” Natural (but groomed) brows will also be hot this spring and throughout the summer. Defining your natural arch is a good way to sculpt your entire face. “It’s like an instant facelift,” says Alves. When it comes to your lips, “finding the perfect red lip will be a great way to look like you have made a lot of effort with very little time,” says Berry. “For those busy mornings, a convertible cheek and lip stain in a nice cherry red can give your face that perfect balance and last all day long.”

40s “As we age and move into our 40s, our face and skin changes, so it’s important to change our routine as that happens,” says Berry. Dewy skin never goes out of style. “Applying a luminous tinted moisturizer will add moisture and hide the sun damage that may have accumulated from all those years of baking in the sun,” says Berry. Sheen versus shimmer is the most flattering on skin as we age, so add a nice violet hue with

12

ReFINEdKINGSTON

a slight sheen to both your eyes and cheeks this spring to add some warmth. Sculpting the contours of the face with a warm, taupe coloured bronzer will give your skin some dimension and warmth after a long, dull winter. Avoid a dark lip liner and just add a hint of colour to the lips. Adding a little highlighter to the cupids bow will give your lips some extra pout. Stay away from heavy black shadows and liners, says Alves, and smudge your liner to give it a softer look. When it comes to your lipstick, stick to a nude shade with a little shine. “Nude tones make lips look bigger,” says Alves. “We lose volume in the lips [as we age] and darker colours can make them look even smaller.”

50s During our 50s, our skin doesn’t bounce back quite the same way as it used to and there may be a few more wrinkles than you’d hoped for. “Find a luminous tinted moisturizer that won’t settle into fine lines,” says Berry. “This will even out your skin tone and add a little glow to your skin. Applying a nice creamy concealer under the eye will also help lift the face and add dimension.” Trying adding a pop of violet to the cheeks and lips to brighten your look for spring, says Berry. “Smudge a warm violet or brown liner

on the outer parts of the top and bottom lash line to really define the eye (do this step looking straight ahead to avoid drooping or harsh lines). And remember to blend, blend, blend!”

60s, 70s and Beyond For all of those ‘Glam-mas’ in their 60s, 70s and beyond, less is more but none is not enough, says Berry. “Don’t be scared to add some colour to your look.” She says a lengthening mascara and a lightly defined brow will open eyes and brighten your face. And embrace your laugh lines (you earned those!) but exfoliate and hydrate to prevent a dull complexion. It’s important to avoid heavy concealers and foundations as they just settle in the creases, says Berry. “Use a liquid concealer that moves with your expression lines and brightens your under eyes.” Whatever your age, your makeup should ultimately express who you are and make you feel confident and sexy. “My favourite thing about makeup is that there are no rules, just suggestions and trends that come in and out,” says Berry. “I always tell my clients you can wear whatever you want if it makes you feel good.” RK

Pack Smart and Travel Light

T

here's no nice way to put this: those of us who know how to pack are annoyed by those who don't. It’s a real science. The key is to always remember that less is more. Here are a few packing guidelines before you leave on your next trip. Bon voyage! Pick one colour story Mine is usually the uniform black punctuated with one colour story. These can be different shades of the same colour, or simply the same colour in different textures, which makes accessorizing and mixing outfits from only a few pieces relatively easy. Pack items that can do double duty A great dress that goes from day to night, or a fabulous pair of jeans that can take you from a casual meeting to the beach are perfect pieces for travelling. While we all need different outfits, try picking a theme and sticking to it: bohemian, urban

casual, business formal or beach vacation, for example. This will make the overall process a lot easier. You can take inspiration from various themes, just make sure they all mix and match well. Accessories are the easiest way to add polish to different looks — think scarves, necklaces and even hats. Pre-pack a couple days before your trip – and keep editing Try putting everything out that you want to bring and practicing how you'll combine the different items. You don't need all those shoes, or all those tops. A lightweight jacket or blazer; cardigan; a couple of tops; a dress pant; a pair of jeans; a day-to-night skirt; comfortable but stylish shoes and a few accessories will do you for a whole week in the city. You need even less for the beach. Pack a few dresses; a scarf that doubles as a coverup; a couple of bathing suits, shorts and tops; a pair of jeans and flip-flops and one pair of nice shoes is plenty.

Make use of Ziplock Bags These are handy travel essentials that are underrated! I put everything in them. Toiletries go without saying, but you can also pack your shoes, intimates and accessories in them. They make items easy to find and organize. Always carry an extra bag; you never know when you might need one.

Create a master packing list for future travels This has been my savior. Every time I forget something or learn from my mistakes, I am sure to add to it. Need help? Just come see me. I'm a bit of a pro.

The key is to always remember that less is more. Here are a few packing guidelines before you leave on your next trip. Bon voyage!

Men's Style Guide

lthough menswear seems to be easy to navigate — shirt, tie and pants — the multitude of fits, fabrics, patterns and options out there seems to cloud the issue. Bomber jackets are making a comeback, as are khakis and silhouettes that we haven’t seen in a number of years. Should you opt for stripes or dots? A button-down shirt or a polo? We see the confusion. The truth is, unless you are buying for a particular function, you probably need a few of each. The basic rule we’ve discussed before is to find your fit. Once you’ve established if you look better in a trim or a relaxed style, you’ll be able to examine your options. My next tip is to work from the bottom up. In other words, start with your pants. Most guys gravitate to blues and blacks or browns and taupe. Use whatever you’ve got. Looking to change it all up? Great! You can start with a clean slate. A little colour can go a long way. It’s exciting to see that fun hues like navy and merlot and classic

colours like sand, khaki and cognac are in style again. When it comes to your shirt, don’t worry too much about matching. Yes, you should try to stick to the same colour family, but have a little fun. Navy pants look great with a grey shirt — burgundy pants do, too. Don’t be afraid to step outside the box a little. Do you have a closet full of stripes? Try a classic shirt with a small sophisticated sailboat pattern, or fun paisleys to pair with those great dark jeans for an ultra-hip look for a night out.

A great soft jacket will finish the look. If you want, add a pocket square or two to top it all off.

Haute

Couture The Lavish Side of Fashion and How It Inspires Ready-To-Wear Looks By Joanne Angelis, House of Angelis Photos: Gucci (Spring/Summer 2016)

18

ReFINEdKINGSTON

At the mere mention of the words ‘haute couture,’ images of high-fashion runways in Paris and Milan with headliners such as Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent and Valentino come to mind. Tall, lanky women with chiseled features strut the catwalk as canvases for these designers’ works of art. It’s important to know haute couture is just that: a work of art. It is the actualization of a designer’s innermost creative genius, inspired by their muse and expressed with fabric instead of words or a paintbrush.

Defining Haute Couture ‘Couture’ literally means ‘dressmaking’ and haute couture is the highest level of this art form. These garments are exclusive, tailormade pieces — often with no price tag. Cost is not an issue for those who wish to have a true bespoke piece. Haute couture is the epitome of soulful expression for a designer. Every colour, texture and stitch is a tangible version of those ideas presented to the world in the form of a runway show. Now, one could see fashion shows and think, “Who could wear this?” After all, what everyday person can relate to a full-length ball gown made of brightly colured silk taffeta with bejeweled feathers and a headpiece fit for royalty? Not too many of us. One would be better served to examine what, exactly, haute couture is and how it trickles down to the everyday woman.

A Brief History The idea of haute couture clothing began as early as the 1700s in Paris and was influenced by art, architecture, music and fashions of the French court. Such unique pieces were time consuming to create and very costly, so visitors to Paris would bring back designs that would be copied by local dressmakers.

Much is the same today. Modernized haute couture shows are exactly that: shows. These designs are never meant to sell. They are made to further the publicity as well as perception and understanding of brand image. However, the show is also where the season’s trends are born. As an example, Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2016 runway show featured the 1970s in full swing. Imagine various bold patterns in bright colours such as emerald green, red and orange layered with textured fabrics and heavy hardware. Thankfully for us mere mortals, designers such as Gucci also create a ready-to-wear line, allowing us to indulge in the beauty of the season’s fashion on a subtler note. The everyday woman might not wear a bright emerald green two-piece, but perhaps a silk blouse in that shade to complement her sleek suit. Or maybe where she might normally carry a soft all-leather clutch, this season her clutch will feature an ornate metal closure. And while the runways showed super high-waisted bell-bottom denims, stores will carry a higherwaisted, exaggerated flare leg jean that is more pronounced than last season. Just as the designer draws his or her inspiration from a muse, so do ready-to-wear collections draw from the haute couture runway. The runway is always there, every day, all around us. We just have to know what we’re looking for. RK

In Style A Fashionable Guy’s Guide To Tackling a Trendy Spring Wardrobe By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough So you’ve finally packed away your heavy wool sweaters and bulky winter coat. It’s time for some new additions designed to punch up your wardrobe so you can be a guy about town with some serious style.

Invest in an Oxford shirt in a spring hue. A workday staple, the Oxford shirt is an absolute must-have in every man’s wardrobe. It’s amazing how something so simple can elevate your look so you’re sexy and stylish without even really trying. Opt for this unbeatable style staple in one of spring’s hottest colours for men: a bold yellow, a subtlety sexy grey, or an eye-popping colour of indigo.

20 ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON 20

Grab a pair of aviator sunglasses Aviators work on everyone — you’d be hardpressed to find someone who can’t wear a pair of these and not look like a million bucks. You can’t go wrong with classic RayBan aviators with a gold or brown frame, but if you’re feeling like something different, there’s a multitude of options on the market. Dior has released a fabulous pair this spring that features a metal frame in blue and silver. You have to protect your eyes from the sun… so you might as well look good while you’re doing it, right? Don a pair of colourful sneakers Women know the right pair of shoes can effortlessly take them from work to afterhours drinks with their co-workers. It’s no different with you and your kicks. This spring, colourful sneakers are where it’s at; high-end designers featured sneakers in all sorts of amazing patterns on their runway this spring, from Givenchy to Bally. Pair yours with a dark wash denim jean and a button-up shirt and you’re good to go. Don’t underestimate the power of the white T-Shirt Ask any woman: there’s just something about a guy in a crisp, white T-shirt. We all know David Beckham can rock them like nobody’s business, but you can too. Just make sure it’s clean. Pair yours with slightly distressed jeans, aviators and a great watch, and you’ll have swoon-worthy style in no time at all. You’re welcome. RK

Find a lightweight sport coat or blazer you feel great in. Much like the Oxford shirt, every guy should own at least one blazer or sport coat. They can take you from a day at the office to a night on the town with next to no effort — you can’t beat that. Grab one in a slim fit that’s navy or grey for casually cool style.

Boasting an astounding array of quality lines, UNDR for Men is no stranger to excellence. Their top seller, MyPackage, more than lives up to its tagline, “It just fits.” This underwear is “unrivalled for fit, comfort, support and style,” says the company, and McRae wholeheartedly agrees. “I have numerous people coming back and buying more pairs,” she says. “It’s their favourite. A Growing Trend By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

24 24

ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON

It seems as though everyone from Hollywood actors to successful athletes are sporting meticulously groomed beards these days — so it’s only natural that you’d want in on the fun. Whether you want to achieve some subtlety sexy stubble or a rock a full beard, here is how to do it right.

The Six Week Rule Great beards don’t just happen – they require regular upkeep to maintain their appearance. When you first start growing a beard, do your best to leave it alone for the first four to six weeks. Be warned: this involves some serious self-restraint, but it allows all the hairs to grow in evenly.

Choosing the Right Shape Once you’ve reached the six-week point, the best thing to do is consult a professional barber; they know what shape will best suit your face and trim your beard accordingly. If you’re a ‘do-it-yourself’ kind of guy, do your homework online first so you have an idea of what shape best suits your face. Those with round faces should grow the hair longer on the bottom, but keep it shorter on the sides. If you have an oval face, consider yourself lucky: pretty much anything goes.

Pamper Your Creation You may be the type of guy who would never consider using any products on your beard. Consider reexamining your views; products are your friends. First and foremost, purchase and regularly use a good-quality beard shampoo. Just imagine all the trapped food and dead

skin cells in there. If you smoke, the smell from the cigarettes can become trapped in there, as well. Avoid using shampoo designed for the scalp; beard shampoo is specially formulated and will help you avoid unsightly flaking and drying that comes as a result of dead skin. Once you’ve lathered and thoroughly rinsed, gently pat dry. Next, apply a beard oil, wax, or balm. “[These products] have become an important part of mangrooming,” says Casey Boyce, owner and creative director of Shiva’s Delight. Beard balms provide some hold to keep unruly hairs in place and maintain your beard’s shape. Meanwhile, beard oils (just a few drops should be used right after you get out of the shower) not only moisturize the skin beneath your beard, they give your facial hair a healthy appearance. “A good beard oil or balm can tame even the wildest of beards, soften the coarse hairs, leave you smelling fantastic, moisturize the skin beneath the beard and help to keep beard dandruff and itch under control,” explains Boyce. “Some beard oils double as facial moisturizers for specialized skin conditions like acne and sensitive skin. A well-made, natural beard oil is an important tool in any beard care regime.” RK

entrally located in the heart of downtown Napanee, Touch of Wellness Spa prides itself on providing ‘The Extra Touch’ to every guest. “All you have to do is arrive and let total relaxation begin,” says owner Joanne Burke, who wholly believes in the importance of self-care. “I learned the consequences can be tremendous when you don’t make time for self-nurturing,” she says. “As a mother, wife, employee, volunteer, friend, caregiver, etc., you realize you cannot serve from an empty vessel. If you aren’t occasionally relaxed, refreshed and restored, you can’t serve anyone well.” Joanne was inspired to open Touch of Wellness when life experiences forced her out of her comfort zone and taught her to place more value on self-care. “The stresses we all face on a day-to-day basis accumulate over time,” she says. “I wanted to create a place in

Napanee where people could come and be relaxed, restored and rejuvenated,” she says. “I was blessed to get my health back again, so I just decided I was going to do it. And I love it. People come in with the world on their shoulders and leave renewed and ready to tackle life’s challenges again.” Joanne — who won the E-Commerce award during her first year in business with more than 8,500 Facebook likes — must be doing something right. Recently, the spa expanded its services after opening a new clinic, known as The Vane Building. Here, guests can receive pain free laser hair removal treatments; eyelash extensions; teeth whitening; spray tanning; reflexology; Reiki; registered massage therapy; lymphatic drainage massages; lymphoedema massage therapy and Indian head massages. Even more exciting (but not at all surprising), Touch of Wellness is celebrating three years in business this spring.

Aveda – Connecting Beauty, Environment and Well-Being Touch of Wellness prides itself on being an Aveda Spa. Professionally developed and clinically tested, Aveda products feature plant-based, organic ingredients that deliver high-performance results, says Joanne. “When combined with the restorative touch of our skilled spa therapists, the results speak for themselves.” All the plants and flowers grown for Aveda must be grown on soil that has been chemical and pesticide-free for more than 25 years. It’s more important than many people realize, says Joanne. “Your skin is your largest organ. We absorb 60 to 80 per cent of what we put on our skin, so the idea that you’re slathering yourself with chemicals, parabens and silicones scares me. Everything you put on your skin

actually gets ingested into your body. I wanted a product that I knew was healthy and that our guests would not have any problem with.” Recently, Touch of Wellness Spa was named as the fastest-growing Aveda Spa in Canada. “It blew my mind,” exclaims Joanne proudly, who says that 92 per cent of guests that visit Touch of Wellness are returning for subsequent treatments. “What that says to me is that our guests are receiving an experience they cannot get anywhere else,” says Joanne. Warm and gracious to her very core, Joanne has created a team exuding the same wonderful qualities. She interviewed nearly 100 applicants when she opened the spa, but it seems all that extra effort was worth it: everyone at the spa is dedicated to making each guests’ experience at Touch of Wellness a memorable and relaxing one. “That’s why the

spa is a success; it’s the team,” says Joanne, who was recently nominated for Canadian Business Woman of the Year. “The products are amazing and the space is wonderful, but the team is what has made the spa explode. And they continually do it every single day. They genuinely care about our guests. I have so many people who come in and tell me they can feel the warmth from the ladies that work here. It is absolutely an environment conducive to well-being.” No Pampering Session is Complete Without a Cocktail It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, because it’s always happy hour at Touch of Wellness. The only licensed Aveda spa in Canada, Touch of Wellness offers a selection of top-shelf liquors, as well as award-winning red and white wine. Before and after your treatments, be sure to enjoy the relaxing fireplace room with the

spa’s complimentary light snacks. There’s also a choice of complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, including a wide variety of teas and specialty coffees. Lunch and dinner can be served when pre-booked with your treatment. Pain-Free Laser Hair Removal Featuring the Soprano laser hair removal system, Touch of Wellness is on the leading edge of pain-free laser hair removal. The Soprano hair removal system is effective on all skin types and hair colours and 20 per cent more effective than IPL laser technology. Those receiving treatments are also able to continue tanning. Imagine never shaving or waxing again. An added bonus? Touch of Wellness offers a financing program, which makes it possible for everyone to enjoy the benefits of painfree laser hair removal. Call the spa for a complimentary laser consultation.

Lovely Lashes in the Blink of an Eye Touch of Wellness uses faux-mink lashes, which are man-made fibres designed to imitate real mink fur. “They are very fine, soft and silky,” explains Joanne. “However, they have been improved in that if you wet them, they won’t lose their curl.” Designed to promote as much volume as possible, but in a way that does not overload or damage natural lashes, this new technique promises the most stunning results, says Joanne. They also last longer than classic eyelash extensions due to their light weight and the amount applied. Fabulous Facials Touch of Wellness offers a variety of Aveda facials designed to tackle every skin issue you might have. Joanne is thrilled to share the latest advancement in non-invasive, skin renewing treatments that Touch of Wellness now offers,

Aveda’s Dual Exfoliation Treatment. Combining innovative techniques and biochemical exfoliation methods into one powerful service that transforms the skin, the treatment results in improved skin texture, clarity and radiance. It also smoothens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “You will see immediate, visible results within one treatment,” says Joanne. Be sure to take advantage of the spa’s massively popular facial program, which allows participants to receive a complimentary facial every fourth visit. Treatments for Teens “Finding treatments that work for teen acne can be frustrating,” says Joanne. “Our team of experts give you treatment options that will give you real results,” she says. Aveda specializes in creating natural skin care products that work with teens’ bodies to bring out their natural beauty. “Our products are free

of parabens, synthetic colours, fake fragrance, petrochemicals, preservatives and harsh chemical additives,” says Joanne. “They truly are 100 per cent natural, safe and healthy. Your face will love it.” The spa’s Outer Peace Acne Relief Treatment is a multi-faceted approach to treating acne. This facial treatment will help clear the skin without over-drying and irritating side effects. With special focus on skin exfoliation and visible redness reduction, the facial improves skin’s overall appearance and prevents future blemishes. The Perfect Date Night If romance is on your radar, Touch of Wellness makes it easy to rekindle the flame. “Whether it’s an anniversary, or just because, many couples are spending time in the fireplace room with a warm foot soak while he enjoys a scotch and she a red wine before having couples massages, pedicures or facials together,” says Joanne. A Woman of Influence Joanne says she endeavours to shine a light on a world of hurt, and to inspire spa guests with her own transformation and ability to overcome whatever life throws at her. “I want to empower women to continue to reach their full potential,” she says. “I think the moments that challenge you the most are probably the ones that have the greatest lifetime importance.” Experience “The Extra Touch” “Everyone has a lot of responsibilities, and we need to do whatever we can to stay healthy on all fronts,” says Joanne, who today is not only thankful for her health, but also for the love and support from her partner Mike McCormick, her “amazing” children Scott and Haley, and her family, friends and team. “Taking time for self care and rest, relaxation and rejuvenation gives us strength to cope with the daily demands of life.” Experience “The Extra Touch” at Touch of Wellness — your mind, body and spirit will thank you for it. Spring Refresher By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough Cold temperatures wreak havoc on our delicate skin. With spring finally here, it’s time to refresh and revive. “Winter weather brings chilling winds, low temperatures and indoor heating, which can irritate your skin until it’s raw and dry,” says Kristine Barker, co-owner of Perfetta Skin Therapy and Medi-Spa. “To combat the dreaded dry face, you want to restore moisture, calm irritation and protect it from further damage.” Depending on how your skin fared throughout the winter, there are a number of facials designed to soothe irritated winter skin. Organic fruit acid peels are a great way to remove the dead skin on the surface in order to hydrate and nourish the healthy skin underneath. “Soothing and hydrating facials are most common after the winter, but each facial should be customized to your particular needs, as everyone is unique,” says Barker, adding how important it is to ensure treatments are left to the professionals. They can choose the best product line for your skin, therefore ensuring you get the best results possible. Professionals also use products that are usually more highly concentrated and potent than your home skin care. “Skin care conditions can be extremely challenging and the effectiveness of your home skin care needs to be boosted with regular spa treatments,” says Barker. “Together, at-home and in-spa treatments produce successful results, better and faster.” It’s important to see a professional for frequent examination and advice, and a good thorough skin

cleaning — which includes properly done extractions. Properly trained specialists will be also able to educate you on how you can increase your skin health by improving your overall health. During regular sessions with a trained therapist, you can learn how you can improve your skin just by making a few changes in things such as your diet. While lifestyle (smoking and sun exposure, for example), impact your skin, sugar and dairy have been known to cause acne and eczema and other inflammatory issues, says Barker.

More Than An Excuse For Self-Indulgence It’s always better (and less expensive) to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to your skin’s health, says Barker. For example, trying to get rid of wrinkles is always more difficult than preventing them in the first place, says Barker. “Our body starts the aging process in our early 20s, so using the correct anti-aging products at a young age — in combination with a healthy lifestyle and proper sun protection — will keep you looking younger for longer,” she points out. In the long run, regular facials can actually help you save money. “An investment in your skin care will save you hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars in the future,” says

Barker — and it all begins with the proper skin care routine. “The proper skin care routine that you do every day at home is the most important way to keep your skin healthy and happy,” says Barker. “In doing so, you will need less makeup and other types of treatments such as Botox, skin tightening treatments or facelifts, which are very costly and could potentially have some serious side effects.” Choose the right products for your specific skin needs — and don’t go the inexpensive route in an effort to save some money. “Buying low-priced products containing chemicals and fillers will not benefit your skin at all,” says Barker. “It will only damage it further, so you might as well flush that money down the toilet. When you think you are saving money by buying the $10 moisturizer, you have likely just wasted the $10 on a product that does not benefit your skin in any way.” RK

Professional Tip: Use a humidifier, a rich moisturizer and eat more healthy fats like nuts and fish to fight winter’s effects on your skin and get summer-ready from the inside and out. ReFINEdKINGSTON

obody is one-dimensional when it comes to style — our look changes daily depending on our mood and activities. While most of us have multiple pairs of shoes and earrings or several hats and ties, a lot of people only have one pair of glasses that they wear each and every day. That’s so monotonous!

If you don’t wear glasses, enhance your eyes with cosmetic lenses. With these, it’s easy to make a subtle or bold change to your eye colour. If you just want to add some sparkle, try daily wear contact lenses. Deeper, thinner frames currently own the day, so play with materials, colours and shapes that will allow all aspects of your personality to shine.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your look — a new pair (or two!) of glasses is a great place to start.

It’s important to remember, though, that there really are no rules when it comes to style in this day and age. There are certainly trends, but it’s such an eclectic world. Find frames that speak to you and wear them with confidence. Life is too short not to “see beautifully!”

Fabulous Frames For Everyday Wear

Sunglasses With Style

Imagine how fun it would be to own a fun pair, a classic pair, a dress pair and an athletic pair — frames with different shapes, textures and colour makes it easy and enjoyable to express your personality and your individuality with confidence.

UV light takes its toll on our eyes and our skin; it ages them. To maintain youthful-looking eyes, ensure you always wear sunglasses outdoors. They will keep your eyes white and clear, reduce periorbital wrinkles and lower your risk of eye disease. Plus, who doesn’t look and feel great in a sweet pair of shades?

Want to appear more youthful? Certain frame shapes can lift your eyes, while bright colours will give a punch of vibrancy to your look. Need something professional? Clean edges, fine materials and intricate detailing can add class and sophistication to a more conservative colour. If you’re going for a casual urban look, opt for matte finishes or play with texture and shape to complement your style.

A new look will have you feeling confident throughout the summer. Treat yourself to a pair or two this spring — a fashion pair for when you’re out on the town and an athletic pair for your active lifestyle should do the trick.

Spring Clean your health

By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

Like everyone else, you’re likely feeling the need for a springtime refresher. Kick-start healthier habits this season; say goodbye to winter, and hello to a healthier spring!

Get Some Fresh Air If you’ve been hitting the gym all winter, congrats! You’re already well on your way to a healthier you. Now that the days are longer and warmer, try giving your body an extra boost by taking your workouts outside. There are a multitude of benefits to outdoor workouts, including lowered blood pressure and decreased stress. The fresh air also helps beat mental fatigue, which can hit hard during the long and cold Canadian winter. Grab Fido and hit the picturesque trails at Lake Ontario Park or Lemoine Point Conservation Area for a brisk walk or light jog; you’ll notice an improvement in your wellbeing almost instantly — and your furry friend will love you for it, too.

Visit the City of Kingston website for a full list of beautiful local parks — some even offer offleash areas for dogs, and splash pads for the kids — after all, they need exercise, as well! If you need some motivation to enjoy the great outdoors, invest in some new workout gear; it may be just the boost you need to get your body in motion. Take Regular Mental Breaks Throughout the Workday The benefits of meditation have been touted for as long as we can remember, and yet many of us are not taking advantage of its stressbusting effects. Taking just a few minutes out of your day to close your eyes and breathe deeply in a calming and peaceful environment can work wonders; it reduces your body’s production of stress-related chemicals like ReFINEdKINGSTON

cortisol and increases serotonin — a “happy” hormone. You may also find your sleep improves with regular meditation, because a calmer mind equals a better ability to sleep soundly. The best part about meditation? It’s easy! Start by finding a quiet environment you feel relaxed in and seat yourself in a comfortable position. Some find it easier to be seated in a chair, while others prefer to sit cross-legged on the floor. It’s whatever works for you; there’s no “wrong” way to do it. Close your eyes and focus only on your breathing — now is not the time to worry about what you’re making for dinner, or that presentation you have coming up at work. That said, don’t worry if your mind starts to wander; meditation takes practice, so don’t expect to be a pro right away. If it helps you, repeat a mantra — include words in your chant like “peace” and “calm” for maximum benefits.

for you. And it’s no wonder! They contain all sorts of artificial ingredients, are quite often high in carbohydrates and low in nutrients and in fibre. They are also easy to become addicted to. There’s no better time than spring to do something about all those bags of chips and cookies in your pantry. Make a pledge to yourself to eat clean — you owe it to you! Focus your diet on the consumption of whole foods: fruit, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Just because they’re whole doesn’t mean they’re boring. For an easy (and delicious!) nosh, wrap a banana sprinkled with some cinnamon in a wholegrain tortilla spread with all-natural peanut butter. It’s a grab-andgo snack that’s easy and healthy — you can’t beat that! Ditch the Alcohol

Another popular method of meditation is a body scan. Simply focus on each and every part of your body — from your toes to your head — and consciously relax it. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel afterwards!

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has established guidelines for low-risk drinking: a maximum of 14 drinks a week for men and nine drinks a week for women, and no more than two drinks per occasion.

If you find meditation just isn’t your thing, at least set aside regular breaks for a refreshing and brisk walk outside — and make sure you eat your lunch away from your desk!

And yet, according to The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, Canadians are getting tipsy far too often — per-capita alcohol consumption has been steadily growing over the past decade.

Purge Your Pantry You’ve heard it all before — processed foods that are sugary, salty and high in fat are bad

42

ReFINEdKINGSTON

The cumulative effects of regular alcohol consumption are hazardous to our health — cancer, depression and heart disease are

just a few of the dangers medical research has linked to drinking. While it’s okay to treat yourself now and again to drinks on a patio this spring with friends, it’s time to make a change. Swap that glass of wine for a tumbler of water spiked with the zing of a refreshing and detoxifying lemon. Buy yourself a new glass water bottle — it might make it easier to gulp down the recommended eight glasses of water a day. Toss the Toxic Cosmetics Store shelves are lined with cosmetic products that are toxic and dangerous. According to the David Suzuki Foundation, they include harmful chemicals like BHT and BHA, DEA-related ingredients, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehydereleasing preservatives, parabens and parfum. Some of these toxins are not only dangerous to fish and wildlife, some are linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. It’s awfully scary to think about, especially when you’re using these products on your mouth and around your eyes and nose. Scrounge through your makeup bag, and toss the products with these ingredients. Swap them for natural deodorant and mineral makeup (just do your research first – not all mineral makeup is natural.) The bottom line? It may be more expensive to purchase cosmetics with non-toxic ingredients, but you can’t put a price on your health. RK

Personal Trainer Secrets:

Fitness Challenges and Weight Loss

A

s a personal trainer, I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are goals that one might like to achieve, but it’s socially acceptable and almost expected that they will not be accomplished. When clients come to us with goals, we assess those ambitions to see if they are realistic, we break them down into mini goals, and we decide what it will take for that person to achieve their objectives and identify all barriers. If the goal were easy, chances are it would already be achieved. New Year’s resolutions are aspirations that people aren’t sure how to execute. Whether you want to lose weight, have six-pack abs, run a half-marathon, climb Mount Everest or simply be able to play with your children or grandchildren, it’s important to remember your goals are achievable, but they need to be broken down into smaller steps. You have to own your ambitions, and be prepared to do what it takes. A trainer can tell you what you need to do but you have to do it. Without commitment, there will be limited success. Don’t get me wrong — I am an optimist. I just like to give my clients all the information they need before they start to maximize their potential for success.

Tackling Weight Loss There is an obesity epidemic in North America. The Canadian Obesity Network cites, “One in four adult Canadians and one in 10 children have clinical obesity, meaning six million Canadians living with obesity may require immediate support in managing and controlling their weight. As a leading cause of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and cancer, the condition impacts those who have obesity, their families, employers, neighbours, health practitioners and governments.” Weight loss is the No. 1 goal requested by clients. Here’s a quick ‘how to’ for this common target. Make weight loss SMART. Specific goals. Lose two to four pounds per week. Plan a workout six days per week for one hour per session. Strictly follow a food plan from your trainer for 16 weeks. Identify your barriers to success, and modify your lifestyle to delete current barriers for weight loss. Measurable. Give yourself 16 weeks. Weigh in every two weeks. Log all of your meals (type, volume and portion size) and all of your workouts (time, intensity in target zone and the type).

Achievable. Choose fixed workout times and book them into your schedule. Do not allow them to be cancelled. Have a contingency plan in place for unexpected incidents. Realistic. Activities chosen should be appropriate for your fitness level and convenience. Have some friends join in for a few workouts to increase accountability. Your trainer should teach, support, motivate and celebrate with you three to four times per week. Support from friends and your trainer is critical in maintaining focus. Time sensitive. Set a start and stop date with a fixed time period of 16 weeks. Be sure to set weekly goals to maintain focus and celebrate achievements. It all sounds easy, right? It isn’t. But it is possible with dedication, guidance and support. Shift your thinking — it’s about a lifestyle change, not a resolution. Surround yourself with positive people and expertise to get the job done. Tell yourself, ‘I will not quit, this is for me’ and ‘A healthy me is much better than an unhealthy me.’ Visualize yourself hitting your target. The world is your oyster. Plan your path and stay on it. What will your conquer today? Make a plan and be unstoppable!

Restoring Health Naturally Alternative Medicine for Infants and Children By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

M

any people are beginning to explore various methods to improve their health and quality of life. Complementary alternative medicine is one of these strategies, and it’s steadily gaining momentum. In fact, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, more than 70 per cent of Canadians

regularly use complementary and alternative healthcare therapies. Whether it’s a regular massage treatment, chiropractic care, visits with a homeopathic practitioner, or appointments with a trained acupuncturist, adults can benefit greatly from complementary alternative medicine — and it’s no different when it comes to the health and well-being of infants and children.

ear infections, constipation, colic and reflux. New mothers experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding may find a chiropractic adjustment performed on their new baby can make breastfeeding easier and less painful. “When you see the outcomes, and the change it makes in families, it is really spectacular,” says Dr. Huddleston.

Chiropractic Care “It’s a lot easier to raise a healthy child than it is to fix a broken adult,” says Dr. Rebecca Huddleston, co-owner and chiropractor at ForeverYoung Chiropractic and Massage. “We want kids to get checked as soon as possible because that’s a really great way to set them up to have a healthy life.” Essentially, our spines protect our nervous system; the more aligned our spines are, the better our nervous system will function. Using the analogy of a garden hose, Dr. Huddleston explains how important it is for the spine to be free of kinks. “If you have a garden hose attached to your house, and you get full power coming out the end, that means there are no kinks. But if you bend a garden hose, or twist it, you get a trickle of water at the end. That’s how the nerves in your spine work. So we just remove that kink.” It’s not only a gentle treatment, it’s completely safe and effective for infants that are only hours old. “When we adjust kids, we use the same amount of pressure that you use when you’re testing to see the ripeness of a tomato; it’s very gentle,” explains Dr. Huddleston. Chiropractic care for infants and children can help with a myriad of health issues, including

44 44

ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON

For Crystal Shea, massages are about connecting with her baby; she stresses the importance of touch when it comes to building a relationship between parent and child, strengthening infants’ immunity and relieving some of the discomforts newborns can go through. Acupuncture

Alana Todd, who has been having her two children adjusted since birth, has found her life and the lives of her children to have drastically improved since they’ve been under chiropractic care. “I just find my life is so much better and so much easier when my kids are adjusted,” she says. “They don’t give me attitude, they listen. And it’s like I have the greatest kids in the world.” Registered Massage Treatments While chiropractic care treats the spine, bones and internal structure of patients, massage therapy treats all of the muscles connected to the spine. “Babies are in the belly for nine months, they’re cooped up in the same position, so when they’re out and about and growing and moving, it’s really great to start massage treatments,” says Morgan Young, registered massage therapist at ForeverYoung Chiropractic and Massage. Like chiropractic care, massage treatments are immeasurably helpful. “They’re beneficial for things like bonding, blood flow and the stimulation of the nervous system,” Young explains. Massages can also help with concerns like constipation and trouble with sleeping.

Acupuncture, which involves the strategic insertion of extremely thin needles through the skin, is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. The practice is said to balance the flow of energy believed to run through pathways in the body. Used as a healing modality for centuries, it’s a practice that’s becoming more and more recognized in the field of children’s health. It’s used to treat a variety of ailments, but most parents seek treatment for their children suffering from chronic pain, headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, asthma and allergies. “It’s astounding, as a practitioner, to see how quickly children can respond,” says Kingston-based registered acupuncturist, Katrin Schubert. She assures acupuncture causes no pain; she’s treated infants who didn’t even notice the needles being inserted. One of her young patients, a 12-year-old boy, often falls asleep during his acupuncture treatments. “I will often put the needle in and take it right out… children have a pure energy,” explains Schubert. “As adults, we have had more experiences, toxins and accidents and so on, so we can be a little harder to treat, but infants

and children usually respond really well.” If young patients are at all opposed to needles, there is a non-invasive form of acupuncture that generates a modulated low-frequency pulse to stimulate acupuncture points in the body. Homeopathy A practice based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself, homeopathy was founded on the principle that ‘like cures like’. In other words, homeopathy is grounded on the notion that if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance could potentially cure the illness. Homeopathy has been around for more than 200 years, and is extremely popular in European countries. During treatment, a homeopathic health practitioner uses the dilution of natural substances for treatment of disease. Schubert, who is also a homeopathic practitioner, says parents bring their children in for treatment for “many, many reasons,” but the most common motivators are colds, asthma, allergies and Autism. As awareness grows, homeopathy is becoming increasingly popular for patients of all ages — including infants and children. “Lots of people are open to it,” says Schubert. “Once you’ve had a positive experience, I think you’re more apt to be open to it.” RK

Johnny Reid Singer, Songwriter, Stor yteller By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough Photo Courtesty of Johnny Reid

He

may be a multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter, but Johnny Reid is as humble and kind-hearted as he is talented. From the moment his one-to-one interview with ReFINEd Kingston began, it was easy to see how he’s managed to capture the hearts of millions and become one of the most illustrious artists of his time. “I feel like I’ve made a lot of friends through the years,” said Reid during a break in rehearsals. “You’ll never hear me use the word ‘fan.’ I’ve met a lot of friends from coast to coast — in this country, especially. Each time I write, record and release a record, they show up. It’s a very humbling experience to have so many people take time out of their life to see you.”

Reid’s latest album, What Love Is All About, was certified Platinum late last year. It’s the first major studio album from Reid since 2012, and it’s easy to see why fans are reacting so positively. Every song and each note has been lovingly crafted by Reid to reflect three main themes: family, love and friendship. “It’s all to do with my past,” explained Reid, who was recently in the Limestone City as part of his What Love

Is All About tour. “I grew up in a place where there was not much. People didn’t have a lot of money to be throwing around. You spent a lot of time with the things that mattered. The biggest things in my life were family and friends, and we were connected by love.” The title song kicked off this latest album — which wasn’t even planned. “I wasn’t intending on writing an album,” he admits. “I just started writing songs with different people and all of a sudden I realized all the songs I’d been writing actually fit together. There were a lot of commonalities between them. “What Love Is All About” really just started as a melody,” he says, pausing to hum the song’s now-famous tune. “I thought, ‘That’s a beautiful melody.’ So I just sat down at my computer and started messing around.” After flushing out the song at his studio, he knew it was special from the first note to the last. “It’s really a dedication, a song about being fearful, a song of someone that went through something that left them guarded, but love conquered that. Someone was able to break the wall down, and someone was able to help this man or woman,

whoever it may be, stand up and testify to everyone that they were in love. And then being very grateful for that.” A natural performer, it’s clear Reid is also a natural-born storyteller — he just happens to be one with an incredible voice and a kind heart. “Storytelling is something I’ve always enjoyed doing; I think stories connect people. On the outside, there seems to be no connection, but stories connect us. I really, truly enjoy entertaining people. I enjoy telling stories, and I enjoy playing music.” From the moment he stepped on the Roger’s K-Rock Centre stage with his startling blue eyes and thick Scottish accent, his love for his audiences and his music was clear. “There’s a lot of places in life, to be honest, through the years, where you don’t feel comfortable… certain situations or places. But once the lights go out, and the spotlights come on, I feel great. I feel very much at home and very comfortable. I’ve always been graced and blessed with having a great audience that wants to be a part of something bigger than themselves. That’s the only thing I’ve ever really strived for is being part of something that’s bigger than myself.” RK ReFINEdKINGSTON

verything Birch caters to those wanting to bring the bounties of the great outdoors into their hearts and homes. Whether for a wedding, special event or just because, the lit birch tree creations expertly and lovingly crafted by Chalk are truly unique and special. “Birch trees are so beautiful,” says Chalk, putting the finishing touches on a stunning custom-made item designed for a client’s front entrance. “They are so whimsical, gorgeous and elegant, no matter what the season.” Whether birch trees have succumbed to age or Mother Nature herself, Chalk — who says she has loved nature for as long as she can remember — sees the beauty in all of them and creates one-of-a-kind décor items that are then expertly lit with sparkling microfine dot lights. The lights come with rechargeable battery packs that last an astonishing 18-hours — perfect for events that last long into the night. Chalk, who says she is a “light-a-holic,” spends roughly 10 hours on every piece she creates. It’s an art form she takes very seriously — but she unabashedly loves every second of it. Her deep love for her craft is evident — and as a result, business is booming. “It’s such a passion for me,” she says fervently. “The simple elegance of nature, and the rawness of it… it’s so beautiful. It’s just amazing how you can transform something like this. I’ve always had an eye for things that people don’t want; I see things totally differently.” While Chalk’s exceptional creations have been massively popular with brides and grooms planning their big day, many of her clients are simply homeowners seeking custom made decorations for their home. “The birch tree lighting is for anyone and anywhere. A friend of mine wants to collect one of my pieces for every floor of his home,” she exclaims proudly. “And I tell anyone I work for, ‘You will never be disappointed.’” Working from her sweet home nestled amongst the trees in Kingston, Chalk is settling the standard in an industry that as of yet, remains untouched. Her business truly is one-of-a-kind — nothing like it exists elsewhere. And even if there were, you can be certain Chalk’s passion for her craft would remain unmatched. “I am so passionate about everything I do,” she says. “If I’m doing it, it’s always 110 per cent. I love beauty, I love nature, I love pretty things. It just inspires me when I see something in nature, and I’m in awe of how beautiful it is.”

Whether you’re planning a wedding, special event, or seeking an extra-special décor item for your home, Everything Birch promises a spectacularly amazing piece guaranteed to take your breath away. RK

yle Dunn grew up surrounded by country music; his earliest memories are of his father strumming the guitar and singing to him and his siblings. It’s only natural the 26-year-old Sydenham High School graduate spread his musical wings and recorded his first song Bootlegger’s Prayer

in Nashville, the birthplace of country music. Following his song’s success in CBC’s Searchlight competition, Dunn returned to Nashville to record an entire EP, City Lights. The seven-song album was an instant hit (his album release party

quickly sold out) and now there’s no stopping this talented young singer. With multiple performances already under his belt buckle, Dunn’s planning a handful of shows at local festivals over the coming months, and plans to return to Tennessee this summer to record another EP. “It’s been so good,” he says. “The music business is really hard to break into, but we’re finding [Kingstonians are] very supportive.” With his charming twang and boundless passion for performing, there’s no telling where Dunn’s career will take him. “Performing is such an adrenaline rush,” he says. “I can’t describe it. It’s like a drug. That’s the best way I can describe it. As soon as I’m off the stage, I’m on such a high, and I’m craving to get back up there again.” Watch for Dunn at the Tweed Stampede on July 30, when he opens for country royalty, Doc Walker.

elly Richter Wheeler was born with a beautiful gift: her voice. This 15-year-old Holy Cross student has dreams of sharing her gift with the world, with plans for her very first EP underway. Personable and witty, this young performer shines bright on stage — it’s where she feels most at home. “It gives me a rush of excitement when I get up there,” she says. “I feel like I’m on top of the world.” Richter Wheeler began singing in talent shows at the tender age of four, and by the time she was in eighth grade, knew she was onto something. “I’ve always been told I had a good voice, but I didn’t really see it until then,” she says. Multi-talented, Richter Wheeler is also an experienced jazz, lyrical, tap and ballet dancer. Recently, she began learning how to play the guitar. She has stars in her eyes when she envisions a bright future. “I hope to see myself in the music industry and hopefully, be famous. That’s the goal.” ReFINEdKINGSTON

hristine O’Connor was only in Grade 1 when she joined a local Kingston choir. She wowed the judges with her incredible voice even though she forgot the

lyrics to her chosen song during auditions. Seeing her perform now, it’s easy to see what those judges saw back then: unmistakable talent.

While she may have a slight case of stage fright — a charming trait for this vocal powerhouse — O’Connor’s incredible voice dominates behind a microphone, appealing to audiences of all ages. “I am kind of terrified of being on stage,” she admits with a laugh. “But usually when I am up there, I love when I can see people’s smiling faces. I love seeing how other people are reacting to my music.” With a strong head for business, her vocal coach, Ryan Lewis, says there’s no stopping O’Connor. “She’s also very intuitive,” he says — and that will take her places she can only now dream of.

A

t the tender age of 11, Claire QUTE is feisty and driven. This talented pint-sized performer (who insists her stage name be spelled with all capital letters) has big dreams — and a bigger personality to go along with them. “I want to show before I turn 13 that any person at any age can make it however far they want to, if they work hard,” she says, adding she wants to be known throughout Canada by the end of this year. “She knows exactly what she wants,” says her vocal coach, Ryan Lewis with a smile. “And it’s really refreshing.”

QUTE’s first memorable on-stage experience was at a karaoke bar, where she sang Avril Lavigne’s hit song, Without You. The positive reaction from the audience lit the fire that now burns bright in her passionate young soul. “It made me feel really good,” she says, her face lighting up with remembrance. “It was really fun.” Her first single, titled I Like You was recorded late last year. “I just think music can stir up more emotions than just talking in a conversation,” she says. “I like to show my emotions through music because that way people can understand the situation a bit better.”

rom the time she was just three years old, Brielle LeBlanc had talent to spare; from the backseat of her parents’ car, the little songstress would unabashedly belt out the Canadian national anthem.

Now 16, LeBlanc’s vocal capacity strengthens each day, and it’s clear this young lady’s talent and determination will take her places. “I feel like I can express

myself through my music,” says the Grade 11 Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School student. “It’s always something I feel nobody has been able to take away from me.” LeBlanc says she was “born into” her talent, and it’s always been the way she’s expressed herself. “I just feel I have this natural ability,” she says, admitting how she thrives being on stage. “Music brings people together.” With a seven-song EP set to release early this year, LeBlanc is emerging as a more seasoned artist, and will be busier than ever with multiple performances scheduled at some of the Limestone City’s popular entertainment venues. “I feel like this upcoming album is really going to be a highlight of my career,” she says. “It’s the beginning of something new. A new direction and path I’m taking. It shows the new me.”

R

elatively new to the local music scene, Katie Orser isn’t wasting any time making herself known in the Limestone City. And it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world discovers her beautiful voice. Orser began taking her singing seriously during Grade 5. Now in Grade 8, she is honing her incredible vocal skills through a variety of local plays and musicals. Last year, she starred in her school’s production of Annie. “It was really fun,” she reminisces. “It was exciting because when I first got out there, there were a lot of people and they were just staring at me. All the eyes were on me, it made me feel very special.”

She also works regularly with her vocal coach, Ryan Lewis. She may be timid, but Lewis assures that won’t stop this charming star-to-be. “Even though she is shy, she has this energy about her… this aura that draws you in,” he says. “She has a very kind heart, too, and is always willing to try new things.”

omeone once said, “If food is the body of good living, wine is its soul.” This couldn’t ring more true for The Winemaker’s Dinner Benefit Series. The inaugural dinner, held recently at the Delta Kingston Waterfront, saw an amazing partnership between one of Kingston’s most iconic restaurants — AquaTerra — and Rosehall Run Vineyards Inc. An evening of memorable food and wine, the incredible evening benefitted the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2016. “We wanted to support this milestone and this organization that extends such care and compassion to so many in our community,” says Greg Bell, general manager of the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel. With simple, elegant décor serving as a backdrop, dinner guests — seated ‘vineyard style’ at one long table — enjoyed an abundance of fresh flowers, flickering candlelight and stunning panoramic views of the harbour and Lake Ontario. “The vineyard-style table brought everyone together,” says Brent McAllister, executive chef of AquaTerra. “It was more intimate, kind of like a group of friends gathering around a family table.” For McAllister, there’s nothing better than assembling friends around a table with great food and wine. “This event was very much like that,” he says. “We gathered a group of people who love great food, were interested in local wine and the winemaking process all with the added bonus of also helping the United Way of KFL&A and the great work they do in our community.” Guests were served an extraordinary fivecourse dinner, which began with an amusebouche of skrei cod and daikon radish

salad with chili-scented soy and pickled scallions. The mouthwatering main course was a pistachio-crusted Ontario lamb loin with shimeji mushrooms, braised leeks, confit fingerlings, baby sorrel and lamb reduction. For dessert, guests were presented with a deliciously poached pear, walnut tuile, mascarpone mousse and a maple genoise. As if all this delicious decadence wasn’t enough, each course was paired with a different type of wine from Rosehall Run, an award-winning winery deserving of its many accolades. “Any time we can have our wines paired with chef Brent’s talents we jump at the chance — whether it’s as part of the wine list at AquaTerra or a special night like the one we just had,” says Dan Sullivan, founding partner and winemaker at Rosehall Run Vineyards Inc. “Where do you get to enjoy this level food and service and have it paired with what we grow and make from our estate vineyard at our farm in Prince Edward County?” From the winery’s new sparkling wine made with estate grown Muscat and Chardonnay to two signature varietals of The County — JCR Chardonnay and Pinot Noir — every diners’ palate was engaged and excited by the variety of amazing flavours. “We wanted to feature signature estate-grown wines that focused on place,” explains Sullivan. “Chef Brent McAllister, sommelier Dorrie Gregoire and Diamond Hotels president Michael Springer and I tasted through the wines and discussed them in context of flow and flavours of the dinner.” The next dinner takes place April 29, and will feature Niagara-On-The-Lake’s Stratus Wines. “Once again, seating will be limited to allow us to create a memorable guest experience,” explains Bell. Tickets can be purchased at the Delta Kingston Waterfront or online at www.aquaterrakingston.com. RK

“I think it is fair to say that [first dinner] was one that everyone will remember,” says McAllister. “Guests enjoyed great wine and food, our team at AquaTerra and the Delta Kingston were able to come together to launch what will be a series of Benefit Dinners and the United Way KFL&A were supported [as they celebrate] 75 years in Kingston. I can’t wait for the next one.” ReFINEdKINGSTON

rchie and Bob Neocleous started working in a local deli when they were just 13 years old. The brothers loved everything about the work, and 10 years ago, they decided to open the first Bob’s Butcher Shop in the Reddendale Plaza. They now own two successful butcher shops in Kingston - one located at 730 Front Road and the second location; 2808 Princess Street. Bob’s Butcher Shop offers a variety of meats, a wide selection of local and European cheeses, and more than 30 types of condiments. They only sell Canadian meat, and everything is cut to order. Their very own “Bobby” burger is named for the store and is made with 100 per cent Alberta beef with no filler. According to Archie, it’s the “best burger in the world.” They also have homemade sausages with more than 20 flavour choices. One of their specialties is ready-to-heat meals prepared in-house. The selection is varied and includes steak and mushroom pie, chicken pies, lasagna, cooked ribs (beef and pork) and chicken wings. They carry a large selection of sauces, marinades and speciality condiments. Both locations

have fresh produce when it’s in-season, as well. This butcher shop is a real Kingston gem where service and quality are always on the menu. With grilling season just around the corner, Bob’s will become your favourite neighbourhood deli and butcher shop even if you’re not in the neighbourhood, it’s always worth the drive. Bob and Archie love getting to know their customers and they keep their prices as low as possible on the best products. And unlike many butchers or delis, Bob’s Butcher offers their customers refunds if they aren’t satisfied with the food. “When people ask about the beef, I always just tell them to try it. Remove the leaves from the sage, rosemary, and thyme. Place the herb leaves in a food processor with the garlic and three tablespoons of the olive oil. Pulse the herbs until a finely minced rub is formed. Season the herb mixture with salt and pepper. Rub one half of the herb mixture on the inside of the prepared pork tenderloin. Top with slices of mozzarella, slightly overlapping, and then with slices of prosciutto and spinach. Carefully roll the pork tenderloin up as you would a jelly roll, tucking the filling back in as needed. Use

butcher’s twine to tie the pork into a roll, using one piece of twine every two-inches. Rub the remaining half of the herb mixture on the outside of the pork and marinate the pork in the fridge for at least eight hours. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Heat the remaining three tablespoons of olive oil in a Dutch oven or other oven-proof skillet. Brown the pork on all sides, then place the Dutch oven in the preheated oven until the internal temperature reaches 145°F, about 30 minutes. Remove the pork from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.

Genes of a Wine Article courtesy of Huff Estates Winery, Prince Edward County

Why can’t you buy a loaf of bread and tell where the wheat for it was grown, or savour a lemon and determine whether it came from Spain, Mexico or Florida? The answer is what makes wine different from almost any other agricultural product known to us — fermentation. If you were to consume wine grapes raw, you probably couldn’t tell where they originated, but once they’ve undergone the chemistry of fermentation, everything changes. Fermentation, which is a metabolic process that converts sugar to acids, gases or alcohol, occurs in yeast and bacteria. I like to think fermentation draws out the grape’s memory — it helps the grape remember its view across the valley as it ripened and the everchanging weather patterns it either enjoyed or endured as the growing season unfolded. After the fermentation process takes place, experienced sommeliers can tell whether the grapes for wine were grown in the gravel of Bordeaux’s Graves region or Prince Edward

County’s limestone. There’s a word for this “sense of place” — the French call it terroir. Literally translated, terroir means earth, or soil. Andrew Jeffords, a British writer who specializes in wine, puts it this way: “Terroir provides the genes of a wine. Winemaking can modify or adapt that genetic pattern.” Compare grapes for chardonnay planted in Prince Edward County and the same varietal from Burgundy’s Meursault. They are same grape — but the difference between them is terroir. While the number of grapes on the vine has a lot to do with the ultimate flavour of the wine, it’s important to remember that it takes a considerable amount of time for a terroir to reveal itself; the skill of the winemaker has a lot to do with it, too. Every vintage presents itself with a distinctive set of climactic conditions. He or she must accept what nature has dealt them and not chemically interfere with the results. Terroir means no “corrected” market-driven beautified wines by the bucket-load. There’s no doubt in my mind Prince Edward County will reveal itself in time, and that owners and winemakers will best interpret the clay, loam, marl and limestone heritage nature has provided them with to reflect our version of terroir. RK

five

unbelievably easy, yummy, good-for-you breakfast ideas

Breakfast doesn’t have to be time-consuming or a disappointing compromise. A few good-for-you breakfast options can set a healthful, happy tone for the rest of your day.

66 66

ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON

B

reakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but it can often be the one that’s hardest to fit into busy schedules. Even if you have time for breakfast, you may find yourself trading wholesomeness and quality for speed and convenience. However, having better-for-you breakfasts need not require a lot of time or effort. It can be as simple as making better and smarter choices. “One of my favourite breakfasts is a bagel with cream cheese, but when I was looking to make healthier choices, I thought this was too indulgent,” said New York Times best-selling author and food blogger Andie Mitchell. “In reality, it’s about moderation and eating a whole wheat bagel with a natural cream cheese is a guilt-free breakfast option I love.” Here are five wholesome, yet easy breakfast options that can start your day off on the right nutritional foot: 1. Better-for-you bagel and cream cheese Who doesn’t love a good bagel? They’re quick, convenient and delicious. They even have their own celebratory day - Feb. 9 is National Bagel Day. If you’ve been shying away from this traditional favourite thinking you

don’t need all the carbs of bagels and the additives in most cream cheeses, it’s time to rethink your view. A whole grain bagel topped with a better-for-you spread, like Arla cream cheese, is a satisfying and delicious start to the day. Choose a cream cheese free of artificial flavours, preservatives, thickeners and stabilizers. Cream cheese comes in unique topping combinations from Blueberry cream cheese with smashed berries to Peppercorn cream cheese with Canadian bacon and cooked egg whites. 2. A better breakfast burrito Classic breakfast burritos are filling, satisfying and nourishing, but unless you go the frozen route, you may not have the time to whip up a morning burrito. A faster, wholesome option awaits — simply top a whole-grain tortilla with your favourite cream cheese, add fresh-sliced fruit such as kiwi, apple or banana, fold in half and enjoy! 3. Outstanding oatmeal As breakfast cereals go, oatmeal is a nutritional champ. A one-cup serving of plain oatmeal has about 150 calories, and it’s loaded with nourishing fibre, protein and vitamin A. Add flavour with wholesome toppings like fresh berries, chopped apples, raisins or nuts. Here’s even better news: plain instant oatmeal has the same basic nutritional value as the kind you slow-cook yourself,

however, be wary of flavoured versions that may have a lot of added sugar. 4. Terrific toasts A slice of toasted white bread slathered in butter isn’t sufficient for a good breakfast, but you can take toast to the next level and create a morning meal that’s tasty, wholesome and toasted. Start by toasting a slice of whole grain bread. Next spread on some protein — this could be a sugar-free peanut butter, almond butter or better-for-you cream cheese. Top with your favourite fruit or veggies. For example, banana slices go well with peanut butter; mango or kiwi cubes are yummy with light cream cheese; and tomato slices atop cream cheese make for a great wake-up call! 5. Easier eggs Everyone knows eggs are a breakfast staple, but who has the time to prepare them in the morning when you’re trying to get everyone out the door? You do! The microwave is your morning best friend, from reheating your coffee to whipping up delectable, easy and wholesome egg breakfasts. You can make scrambled eggs in minutes. Just crack an egg into a microwave-safe cup, add a tablespoon of water or milk, a dash of cayenne pepper and some salt, and a teaspoon or two of your favourite veggie finely diced, such as scallions, tomatoes or mushrooms. Top with a generous spoonful of shredded Havarti or Gouda cheese and microwave everything for 45 seconds. Stir and microwave for another 45 seconds until the eggs are set. No time for even the basics? Fresh fruit, a muffin or croissant is a great alternative. (BPT)

onald Brashear played many games in the NHL, scoring 205 points and spending nearly 3,000 minutes in the penalty box. He was, therefore, familiar with the actual mechanics of hockey, but had no idea what a well-made stick actually cost — during his five years with the NHL, all of his equipment had been purchased for him. With the average well-made stick ringing in around $300, sticker shock was inevitable. With the belief that every player should have access to a well-made stick no matter what their age or skill level, Brashear decided

to take matters into his own hockey gloves and set out to manufacture and sell highperformance hockey sticks at an affordable price. It was then that Brash 87 was born. It wasn’t long before Kingstonian Jibin Joseph learned about Brashear’s ambitious business platform; that’s when plans were really set in motion. Longtime friends, the two decided to go into business together in an effort to forever change the face of hockey. “We are making this our passion,” says Joseph. “What we are trying to do is provide a high-quality stick at an affordable price for everyone to use, this is basically our mandate.”

Made primarily of carbon, Brash 87 sticks compare to any high-end stick on the market. Designed and tested by Brashear himself, quality is guaranteed to be uncompromised. “It’s quality before profit,” says Joseph proudly. “At the end of the day, hockey is such a popular game in Canada; we just want to have everyone look at our sticks as a first option.” With such a visionary business plan in place, it was only a matter of time before the duo received national recognition. On Feb. 3, they appeared on the hit television show

Dragons’ Den, effectively taking this local success story to a whole new level. From the dragons, they sought $500,000 for 20 per cent of the business. They were thrilled with the three-way offer they received from Jim Treliving, Michael Wekerle and Manjit Minhas: $500,000 for a 40 per cent economic interest and a 50 per cent voting interest. The sticks, which range in price from $120 to $170, are now available at various Canadian Tire locations. “We put our feet to the ground and we are running as fast as we

can with it,” he says. “We are trying to build more brand awareness. We want to build into a national brand and we believe we have the opportunity to do that.” RK To learn more about Brash 87, or to purchase their products, visit brash87hockey.com.

A Dedicated Team of Specialists Working for You My Team-Financial operates on the distinctive principle that people are always better served when they have access to a cooperative team of dedicated specialists. “We believe in the phrase, J‘ack of all trades, master of none,’” says Jeff Bennett, owner of My Team-Financial. As such, My Team-Financial has assembled a dedicated group of individuals, each with a specific area of expertise. “We are licensed to provide advice on so many products, it would be impossible for one advisor to do everything well,” explains Bennett. “If a business owner is curious about which benefits they can use to attract and retain good employees, I send in my Employee Benefits specialist. If a retiree has concerns regarding possible future health care costs, I schedule some time with

my Long Term Care specialist. If a retiree wants to reduce taxation on their retirement income and the probate on their estate, that’s my area of expertise.” My Team-Financial has also established solid relationships with a wide variety of external specialists throughout the Limestone City region, including mortgage brokers, accountants, lawyers and bankers. Bennett knows it’s important for such individuals to work together in a cooperative manner towards a well-documented plan focused on their clients’ unique needs. “It has to be team-based,” he emphasizes. “It’s like having a family planning council with all specialists in the same room working together for the client. It just makes sense.”

Heritage Group Financial As the safety of GICs are required for many of his retired clients, Bennett purchased Heritage Group Financial, the largest privately owned GIC deposit brokerage firm in the region. Heritage Group has contracts with more than 40 banks, credit unions, trust, mortgage and insurance companies. “We’re looking farther abroad than the financial institution on the corner,” says Bennett. “We’re looking at all the different institutions across Canada to find the best possible investment rate for our clients. We work with our clients on their side of the table — it’s a great place to be.” Bennett’s passion for assisting clients is evident — for him, it’s not just a job. “It feels great to help,” he says. “We are always trying to serve our clients better, to find a better way, find a more complete way and provide a larger value of service.”

Whether you’re a business owner, within 10 years of retirement or a retiree, consider My Team-Financial and their group of specialized individuals to provide team-based financial solutions focused on you. RK

Mandeville Private Client Inc. Create and Preserve Your Wealth Photos by Stephen Wild

“Making high-end investments available to smaller investors fits perfectly with my vision for the branch. I also believe it’s a well-timed change. Markets have become so volatile in the last 10 to 15 years; we need more than traditional stocks and bonds to create and preserve wealth.” - Richard Colton 72

W

ith a differentiated investment philosophy and a mission to democratize access to private investment opportunities within the Canadian investment industry, Mandeville Private Client Inc. is about to make its mark on the Limestone City. Created to address a perceived gap in the financial services market, the Kingston-based branch of Mandeville Private Client Inc. provides access to investment opportunities usually reserved for affluent and institutional investors. “I felt clients with investment portfolios between $200,000 and $1,000,000 weren’t being offered access to a broad range of quality investment solutions,” says Richard Colton, branch founder. “They’re too small to be taken on by private wealth firms that typically have $1,000,000 minimums, and too big for the standard mix of mutual funds offered by most advisors.” Mandeville Private Client Inc. is an independent wealth manager led by Michael Lee-Chin, one of Canada’s wealthiest businessmen and philanthropists. The company’s mission is to democratize investing by giving Canadians access to private investment opportunities that have traditionally only been available to ultra-wealthy families and institutions. “The wealthy have access to alternative and private investments that, until now, no one else could invest in,” says Colton. “Making high-end investments available to smaller investors fits perfectly with my vision for the branch. I also believe it’s a well-timed change. Markets have become so volatile in the last 10 to 15 years; we need more than traditional stocks and bonds to create and preserve wealth.” Investment fees have been a hot topic in the industry of late and it’s an area Colton

believes investors need to be aware of. “The industry effectively penalizes investors for being successful,” he says. “The more money you have invested, the more you pay in fees. I don’t believe that’s necessarily fair.” A key focus of their approach is on flattening the fee curve so clients can benefit more from their savings. “Fees matter, it’s as simple as that,” he says. “It’s not the only concern a client should have — performance and risk management are also important — but you should know how much you’re paying and what you’re getting in return. We believe the fees we charge should reflect the service we provide, not just the size of the client’s account. As their account grows, we reduce our fee rate to maintain a dollar level that we feel appropriately values our service.” But the branch’s approach is more than just fee equalization and picking better investments, it’s about understanding how each investment fits together in the portfolio, explains Colton. “We use passive investments to manage risk and keep costs low, active funds when we believe the manager truly has a process worth paying for, and we use Private Equity, Mortgages and Real Estate to add more sources of return and diversification. Each piece of the portfolio has a distinct purpose.” Diversification is “a big word in our industry, but it’s often poorly executed,” says Colton. “We get our diversification from our passively managed investments and additional asset classes, though we actually look for concentration, the opposite of diversification, from our actively managed investments. Striking a balance between the two, we feel, is the key to successful investing that most investors miss out on.”

Comparisons are the cornerstone of the branch’s process for working with prospective clients. “It’s really hard for clients to know what they’re getting from their advisor and even harder to gauge how that stacks up against other options,” explains Colton. “To help with that, we compare our portfolios to a prospective client’s current investments in three areas: risk, return and fees. Our reports detail all of the published and hidden fees, historical performance and overall exposures. It’s a great way to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches and makes it very easy for the client to understand.” Ultimately, Colton recognizes the approach isn’t for everyone. “What we do isn’t going to be for everyone and we don’t want it to be,” he says. “Our approach is simple and straightforward, but unique. We want to work with clients who will appreciate the extra work we put in and be as proud to be a client of ours as we are to be their advisor.” To create and preserve your wealth with customized solutions, call Mandeville Private Client Inc. today. Fit to Work Encouraging a Healthy Workplace By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

Imagine an office with on-site physicians and nurses, a gourmet cafeteria that provides three meals a day, physical fitness programs, a gym, and access to perks like massages. Sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? To the more than 5,700 employees at Google, it’s reality. 74

ReFINEdKINGSTON

While such a health-conscious workplace will remain only a dream for the majority of office workers, many employers are taking steps to create a healthy environment for their staff. Such forward thinking not only increases productivity, it makes for happier and healthier employees, as well. Here’s a few ways to take your personnel from stressed out to blissed-out.

Go Green You have to start somewhere, so begin by choosing a variety of plants to distribute around the office. Not only do they enhance the overall appearance of the workplace, they have the potential to help reduce stress and air pollutants. The Peace Lily is a great first choice; they tolerate lowlight conditions quite well and are known for their ability to keep the air around them cleaner. The Corn Plant is another suitable

option; they are easy to care for (why add to the stress of the office with a plant that requires lots of upkeep?) and they are also known for their pollutant-eliminating abilities.

Move It Employees today work long hours — and many of those hours are spent sitting at a desk. This not only contributes to a strained neck and sore shoulders; prolonged sitting can also contribute to heart disease, poor circulation in legs and muscle degradation, among other things. One way to combat these health hazards is with the help of a height-adjustable treadmill desk; it’s a gentle and effective way to integrate movement into everyday work tasks. Most models top out at around two miles per hour, so you won’t break a sweat during your average workday, but you will burn calories. If such an expensive piece of equipment is not in the company’s budget, move your meeting out of the boardroom and into the great outdoors with walking meetings. Contrary to popular belief, walking does not hamper effectiveness. In fact, increased blood flow can bolster creativity and overall thinking.

Take a Seat

Corporate Gym Memberships

If such an active environment just isn’t going to happen at your workplace, consider providing a variety of options for desk seating. Exercise balls — normally reserved for time at the gym — engage core body muscles, abs and large lower back muscles in order to hold the body upright and balanced on the ball. Users also gain better posture, because the chair lacks any kind of back.

According to the Canadian Obesity Network, one in four adult Canadians has clinical obesity. But this number does not have to be so startlingly high; many gyms today offer great deals and corporate memberships. If you think such spending is too costly, consider this: work related stress is the No. 1 health risk affecting Canadian employees. This not only impacts employee attendance, but benefit costs and short and long term disability leaves.

A balance stool is another option. Much like an exercise ball, they force users to sit up straight. Some models even bounce up and down, further engaging those core muscles that are far too often ignored sitting in a standard office chair. Meanwhile, kneeling chairs can reduce some lower-body strain, while encouraging good posture at the same time. In a kneeling chair, the shins provide stability, allowing the user to remain seated. When titled slightly forward, the spine is in a more neutral position. This can help to ease lower back pain commonly associated with sitting for long periods of time.

Break Away Encourage your employees to take active breaks throughout their workday; this also means eating lunch someplace other than their desk. It’s not always easy to step away from the computer, but it’s vital for overall health. Just a few minutes of fresh air and sunshine will help to improve overall productivity and mood. Be serious about blocking time aside; consider two 15-minute breaks (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) for your employees. However you go about encouraging a healthy workplace, just remember a better work environment equals a better employee. RK

Ten Office Tips To Boost Productivity

E

mpty boxes, piles of paper, pens strewn about - everyone is guilty of office disorganization. What most people don’t realize is a messy, disheveled office space can actually dramatically reduce worker efficiency and productivity. It’s time to get organized and these 10 simple ideas will help you tidy up your work area and stay on-task for good. Reduce and recycle Go through drawers and get rid of paperwork and supplies you never use. Recycle paperwork and give unused supplies to coworkers or donate them to your community’s schools. If you’re never going to use these things, they’re just taking up valuable space. Keep supplies stocked Ninety-four percent of office workers are less productive when they don’t have all the supplies they need to work. Order necessary supplies like Post-it Notes, flags, tabs, daily planners, professional notebooks and pens. Then, put coloured flags on the calendar to mark when you need to re-order supplies so you’re never without the necessities.

76 76 ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON

Rethink your desktop A clean desktop is essential to productivity, however many people are guilty of having their desk covered with unnecessary items. If you don’t use it weekly, find another place for it. That means unused folders, staplers, tape dispensers, and the like can go in a drawer. Corral pens Pens and other office extras like scissors, letter openers and highlighters look tidy when placed in a jar on your desk. A big jar can hold everything or use smaller jars to sort each item into its own container. Clear glass jars makes it easy to see what’s inside. Think vertically If you’re short on desktop space, think vertically. Walls provide ample opportunity for unique storage. One stylish and affordable option is to cut a peg board and place it in an open frame. This eye-catching wall hanging allows for easy access to office essentials. Write it down Sixty-two percent of office workers prefer to manage their to-do list on a piece of paper rather than a computer or digital device. Write your task list and place it somewhere you’ll see

it, such as the edge of your computer monitor or the front of your notebook. This visual reminder will keep you on-task throughout the day. Don’t sweat the small stuff At a loss for how to organize paper clips, tacks and other small office items? Small tins are a great way to sort and store these office odds and ends. Place them in drawers so they are out of sight. Systemize folders Tackle that pile of folders in the corner and create a simple organizational system. Colour code the folders based on your work responsibilities so each tab colour is tied to a specific task or status of a project. Cut cord chaos Are you always digging under your desk for the right cord? Black binder clips typically used to hold paperwork together are also great for organizing USB, cell phone chargers and other cables. Clip to the side of your desk and thread the chord through the metal to eliminate tangles. (BPT)

Achieve Investment Goals With Less Volatility Is a low volatility equity fund the right choice for you?

C

hoosing between risk and return is one of the most important decisions for an investor. To reap higher returns, we generally accept more risk. However, in many stock markets around the world, stocks with the highest volatility have not necessarily been the best performers over many time periods. During some periods, the least volatile companies have actually done better. What is a low volatility strategy? When market volatility occurs, recovering from a decline in a portfolio takes time. The larger the decline, the greater the market gain that must occur to break even again. A low volatility strategy is designed to participate in stock market growth, but limit the downside risk compared to the broad market. For example, if your investment incurred a loss of 50 per cent in the stock market, your investment would have to grow by 100 per cent to recover your loss, while a less significant decline of 20 per cent requires a much lower margin of recovery. Because low volatility funds tend to experience smaller relative declines, they are expected to recover quicker than higher risk investments. This lower volatility approach often appeals to investors drawing income from their portfolios who have had to sell

during a decline, resulting in a greater loss. For example, assuming 10 per cent of the investment was sold after the decline to provide income, the investor that experienced a 20 per cent fall and a 25 per cent recovery would have 87.5 per cent of their investment. The investor that saw a 50 per cent decline and a 100 per cent market bounce back would only have 80 per cent. Different methods can be employed by low volatility fund managers to mitigate investment risk. Who should invest in low volatility funds? Investors who are increasingly looking for options to minimize risk within their equity portfolios without necessarily sacrificing returns. Low volatility equity funds are ideal for investors who want exposure to equity markets due to the higher growth potential that stocks offer, but want to avoid the excessive market risk associated with more traditional equity funds. When investing in low volatility funds, it is recommended they be held within a well-diversified portfolio. This would include allocations to equity investments from around the world as well as an appropriate allocation to fixed income that will provide further risk reduction over the long term. It is important to note the expected risk associated with these low volatility funds is relative to their corresponding equity

benchmark and that these funds will not totally eliminate market volatility, but attempt to remove a portion of it. As a result, this investment strategy may not be appropriate for investors who are not comfortable with any level of investment risk due to their need for capital preservation. Circumstances such as those would likely warrant an investment in a money market fund or perhaps a GIC, with the lower return expectation that they bring. Four Ways Managed I.T. Services Can Help Your Business

echnological failures can be costly and frustrating when the day-to-day operations of your business are affected. Don’t let this happen to you. Managed I.T. Services, which provide regular maintenance and updates, are a viable solution for your company. Here are four ways managed I.T. Services can help you and your business: Substantial Cost Savings A managed services plan with the right company would take into account updates, upgrades and preventative maintenance to ensure your business and its employees stay connected — without breaking the bank. According to Statistics Canada, hiring a single I.T. professional in Canada can cost you upwards of $60,000 a year. By implementing an I.T. company to provide managed services, you can eliminate wasted hours and a lot of overhead. One Call For Every Problem Even if your company has a budget for a single I.T. professional at $60,000 to $80,000 a year, you are limited to the knowledge of that single professional.

are passionate about. Peace of Mind A team monitoring your I.T. infrastructure and preventing or resolving any problems is a huge part of a managed service contract. Above all else, it offers peace of mind. It’s a huge deviation from the traditional “fix it when it breaks” model of management. You don’t need to worry about support because your team of dedicated technicians is on call for any emergencies that may arise — but most things are dealt with proactively by identifying issues before they become problems. Accountability You may have tried to solve computer problems or software issues on your own and realized it’s like playing the blame game; every vendor and service provider tries to dodge a bullet and throw blame at someone else. Having a team of knowledgeable professionals adept at identifying the root cause and being able to clearly identify troubleshooting steps is important when it comes to ensuring accountability. Never wonder again.

It’s important to know the I.T. industry is immense; therefore, the skillsets of I.T. professionals vary significantly. It’s crucial to have a staff of professionals able to assist in whatever capacity you need them to. A managed I.T. company provides those specialized, dedicated services with a team of professionals — each with an individualized set of skills and proficiencies they

commitment to developing and refining the technologies to enable self-driving capability. In fact, it is a core part of the company’s mission. Late last year, Tesla’s new Autopilot feature became available for the Model S. According to the Tesla Motors Team, it features a forward radar, a forward-looking camera, 12 long-range ultrasonic sensors positioned to sense 16 feet around the car in every direction at all speeds, and a high-precision digitally-controlled electric assist braking system.

It

is estimated that by 2020, there will be 10 million self-driving cars on the road. It may be a startling figure for some, but such cars are driving change — and they are inevitably the future. In fact, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers believes 75 per cent of all cars on the road will be automated to some extent by 2040. Premium auto manufacturer Tesla is at the forefront of this innovation, with a

Autopilot “Relieves drivers of the most tedious and potentially dangerous aspects of road travel,” says the company. They are building Autopilot to give drivers more confidence behind the wheel, increase road safety on the road and make highway driving more enjoyable. Autopilot not only allows Model S to steer within a lane, it also allows the vehicle to change lanes with the tap of a turn signal and manage speed by using active, trafficaware cruise control. Motors, brakes and steering are controlled digitally, therefore helping to avoid collisions from the front and sides. It also prevents the car from careening off the

road. Hate searching for parking spaces in a crammed lot? Tesla’s Autopilot system will not only scan for a parking space, it will alert you when one is available. Parallel parking (a challenge for many) is no longer a problem, either, since the system can do it on command. Although the software does not make the cars completely autonomous, it’s only a matter of time before drivers can take their hands off the wheel for good, assures the company. Because the Autopilot system uses feedback from camera, radar, ultrasonics and GPS, the company can receive real-time feedback; improvements continue to take place every day. “The system is continually learning and improving upon itself,” says the company. On January 1, Ontario began allowing fully autonomous vehicles on the road — it’s the first province to do so. Drivers (approved researchers whether in the public or private sector) must be fully licensed and behind the wheel at all times during this testing period. Like all other cars, these drivers are required to follow the rules of the road — and this means no distractions such as cell phones. They must also carry a special ministry permit. RK

New Midnight Special Editions Available on Silverado 1500 Z71, Colorado Z71

Chevrolet knows everything is better after dark. Take on the night by taking advantage of Chevrolet’s expansion of the popular Midnight Special Edition — new models are now available on the 2016 Silverado 1500 Z71 and 2016 Colorado Z71. The models join a growing portfolio of special-edition trucks whose popularity helped Chevrolet truck sales increase 22 per cent last year, making Chevrolet the fastest-growing pickup brand in Canada. “Not only is Chevrolet on the cutting edge of technology, [their special edition models] display a combination of reliability, durability, power and style,” says Brendan Fielding, sales manager at Taylor Auto Mall. “They’re amazing machines.” ReFINEdKINGSTON ReFINEdKINGSTON

The special-edition trucks introduced in 2015 — each combining equipment and appearance packages designed for specific enthusiasts in mind — clearly resonated with customers, as the special editions sold quickly. “The blacked-out look is just so different and unique,” says Fielding, adding that the distinctive look was not a corporate invention. “Young guys were jacking their trucks up and blacking out their rims and bowties, so this was sort of a grassroots movement. They just want [their vehicles] to look different, and GM, it appears to me, adopted. They responded to demand to give the public what they wanted.” In addition to the Silverado 2500 HD Z71 introduced in September 2015, customers can now select from the midsize Colorado, and the light-duty and heavy-duty Silverado Midnight editions. Each combines off-road equipment and monochromatic details, such as off-road suspension and hill descent control; locking rear differential; transfer case shield; an all-black front end with body-coloured grille, bumper, headlamp bezels, tow hooks and fog lamps; black side mouldings and beltline mouldings; black painted alloy wheels; special Z71 badges on the door; a sprayin bedliner and black Chevrolet bowties for the front and rear.

Each model also features aggressive Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac all-terrain tires. A workhorse tire for rugged off-road terrain, this tire is 3-Peak Snowflake rated for those regions that mandate winter tires. The tread design is great for hard work off the beaten path but will require regular tire rotations. “It’s an aggressively treaded off road tire, so it looks like it means business,” says Fielding. “It is a mean, serious-looking tire, and if you were to take it off road, you would probably be able to get through anything. These tires can dig in and eat dirt.”

The Silverado 1500 Midnight Edition offers 4G LTE with Wi-Fi; Best in Class 5-Star Safety; Best in Class V8 Fuel Economy and Chevrolet Complete Care — the longest powertrain warranty in Canada. It also offers two years of complimentary oil changes, and five years of roadside assistance. The Colorado Midnight Edition offers 4G LTE with Wi-Fi; Best in Class Payload; Best in Class Towing and Chevrolet Complete Care. It too offers two years of complimentary oil changes, and five years of roadside assistance. For those who want a truck with some edge, consider the value and convenience that comes with one-stop shopping, says Fielding. “Anyone who wants more of a standout look to their truck that does not want to spend more money aftermarket, and the time and effort to buy aftermarket to change the look of their truck, they can get it all in one complete package at Taylor Auto Mall,” he says, making special note of the package credits the dealership offers its clients. Command attention with your vehicle this spring — now is the time to buy. “If anyone has itchy feet, bring yourself in, because spring offers the best deals and endless selection,” says Fielding.

Finishing

Touch Transform Your Basement Into a Beautiful and Functional Living Space by Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

Begin By Organizing For many homeowners, the basement becomes a catch-all for things we no longer use, want or need, so begin by paring down your belongings. Extra clutter means you’ll have less living space when all is said and done, so be thorough when it comes to deciding what to donate, keep or sell. If organizing does not come naturally to you, consider hiring a professional. They will help you simplify the process from start to finish and make the experience less overwhelming. They’ll also help you establish a system for remaining organized to prevent future clutter from accumulating. Plan Your Space Before any construction begins, you’ll need to choose a layout, set a budget and obtain any necessary permits. Consider how you plan on using the space. Will the basement become a home office, a playroom for the kids, or a home gym? If you’re creating a guest room, you might want to consider the addition of a powder room, as well. Before making any major layout decisions, consider how your needs might change in

the future, as well as the re-sale potential of the home; even if selling isn’t in the immediate future, it’s still an important consideration to make. Whatever you decide, bear in mind that you’ll likely want to set aside some closed-off space for unsightly equipment like the water heater and furnace. You’ll also want to ensure there’s no mould or mildew issues — this can be a common problem in basements. It’s always best to reach out to a professional contractor for a qualified opinion to avoid costly future disasters. Choose a Look Above all, remember it is important the finished basement becomes a space you will enjoy spending time in. The design, finishes and details should relate to the rest of your home, so that it all ties together, says Michelle O’Donnell, an ARIDO certified interior designer at Reid & Siemonsen Design Group. “Think about what you would like to use the space for, and plan in advance to avoid unnecessary surprises along the way,” she says. At Reid & Siemonsen, designers always encourage homeowners to take the same care in planning and finishing a basement space as they would any other space in their home. “When thoughtfully planned and executed, a finished basement can add significantly to the

When it comes to choosing the paint colour, “the options are endless,” says O’Donnell. “Paint colours are a great opportunity to tie into the colour palette already established in your main floor living areas,” she says, adding how important it is to determine what the space is going to be used for. “For example, if you are designing a playroom, you may want to choose a bright and cheerful option, while a darker paint selection may be more appropriate for a media room.” Flooring Ceramic tile is impervious to moisture and can be installed directly on a concrete slab, while carpet can make any room feel cosy and warm. Hardwood isn’t recommended, simply because of the moisture that tends to occur below-grade. If you want a similar style with less risk involved, opt for laminate flooring. It’s remarkably similar in look to hardwood, and there are endless colour and style options to choose from. If you are seeking out an inexpensive option, simply paint the concrete floor. Just keep in mind that it offers no cushion for your feet, and does not absorb sound. It will also need to be repainted periodically.

Brighten Up In most cases, natural lighting will be limited, so it’s important to brighten up the basement with proper illumination. “It is important to have a lighting plan in place before you start renovating,” says O’Donnell. Pot-lights, she says, can be a great solution for general illumination, and there are many warm LED options available that allow for great flexibility in locating fixtures.

Table and floor lamps are a great opportunity to add additional warmth, and the use of area rugs, textiles, and soft upholstery will also help the room feel more comfortable.

Hooper has skillfully installed roofs on thousands of homes in the area, working alongside a team that is equally dedicated to perfection. He considers himself honest and hardworking; roofing is a passion he pursues with vigor, integrity and old-fashioned hard work. But it hasn’t always been this way. One of eight children born to an alcoholic mother, Hooper spent his entire childhood being shipped from foster home to foster home. Often suspended from school, he would spend his free days helping his uncles who were all roofers. He dropped out of school when he was only in Grade 5, and began working fulltime as a roofing labourer. Rather than getting his education, playing with other little

boys his age, and taking part in sports, Hooper spent his days gathering materials, cleaning up and being of assistance in any way he could. Despite his young age, he was often in trouble with the law. It was a vicious pattern that would repeat for many years, until he met his wife when he moved to Kingston and they became parents. “When I had my daughter, I knew right away why I was here,” says Hooper. “She was my responsibility, and I knew I had to really buckle down. But until that time, I was basically lost in my life. I had no guidance and I couldn’t see the forest through the trees. Having my daughter was an inspiration to start working

and to start building my life.” Build his life, he did. In fact, the birth of his little girl turned his entire life around and today, Hooper is known to many as one of the city’s best roofers. Through his perseverance and devotion to clients, he’s earned a reputation he can be proud of. He’s a gifted roofer that installs every kind of roofing system, puts the needs of his customers first, and never, ever sacrifices quality — no matter what. “I’ve proven that I’m dedicated, loyal, honest, hardworking and devoted to my job,” says Hooper, adding that it was Martin Mack, owner of Concord Homes, who gave him the push to pursue a more positive life

path. “My whole life is roofing. I put roofing before everything else in my life, and that’s why I am where I am today.” He says he’s “a little rough around the edges” with plenty of tattoos adorning his body, but as the saying goes, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” Since turning his own life around, Hooper is helping his young team to do the same. “I try to build these guys up,” he says, referencing the trips to Cuba he takes his team on each year. “I’ve trained my guys to be dedicated to their job — I tell them not to come if they’re not happy to be here, or if they just need the work. I tell them to come if they want to learn the trade, they want to work, they want to better their life…then this is the place ReFINEdKINGSTON

He’s proud of the fact that even though he’s nearly 50 years old, he’s on the roof of every home his company works on. “When I started out, I put my head down, and I said I was going to be on every job. The other guys would work eight hours, but I’d work 15. The other guys would go in when it would rain, but I’d stay outside. I would get the job done. Whereas other guys just wanted to get the job done, and get it done fast, I wanted quality — I still do. I put my heart and soul into it.”

“We have used Roofing by Richard for many years on each of our high profile custom homes,” say Marc-Antoine and Crystal Charette, the owners of Charette Custom Homes. “He has proven to be efficient, highly skilled and true to his word. We would recommend Roofing by Richard to anyone who is looking to have a positive and professional experience.”

A Proven Track Record Since its launch in 1994, Roofing by Richard has become the “go to” roofing company for 20 of the Limestone City’s most reputable builders, including Charette Custom Homes, Concord Homes and Brookland Fine Homes. “I’m a small company, but I’m a proven company,” says Hooper. “I have 20 of the finest homebuilders in the area backing me. You can’t get better references than that. These are some of the most upstanding builders in the city and they have been building for years. To have them stand in my corner saying that I’m the guy they want….that’s great.” A Roofing Company Like None Other Hooper takes pride in tackling the projects no one else is interested in, completing even the most complicated roofs. “I never run away from

Hooper, it seems, is living his dreams, and is solid proof that hard work pays off. “It’s through 22 years of putting my head down and just working,” he says. “I knew that if I worked, was honest and did quality work, I’d have the best builders in the city backing me, and I’d be where I am now.” Make the best decision for your roof and home.

“Llynlea Fine Homes and Brookland Fine Homes have contracted our residential roofing labour needs from Roofing By Richard since the spring of 2009,” says John Armitage, P.Eng., president, Llynlea Fine Homes & Brookland Fine Homes. “We find Richard Hooper to be honest and reliable, providing the highest quality of workmanship. We actively recommend Roofing By Richard to others and continue to use Richard’s team for the majority of all our residential home roofing needs.”

“Richard has been roofing for Concord Homes for over 15 years,” says Martin Mack, owner of Concord Homes. “As a contractor, Richard is always accommodating and willing to work around our construction schedules. His workmanship can always be trusted and we consider him to be an important and valued member of the Concord Homes team. Richard always makes the extra effort to make sure each job is completed to the highest standard. With his can-do attitude, Concord Homes can always count on him to get the job done and most importantly, do it well.” RK

rom the age of four, Marc-Antoine Charette knew a career in homebuilding was in his future. But what he didn’t know was that his passion for building, coupled with an entrepreneurial vision, would bring such gratification to the owners of the custom homes he builds. For the past 15 years, Marc-Antoine Charette (Marc) has been forging his own path in the competitive construction industry. With every project he’s worked on, his reputation as a reliable and gifted homebuilder has increased. In 2007, Marc and his wife Crystal decided to combine their skills and offer a service focused on quality and customer service, not as a simple business strategy, but as a core value that continues long after the project is complete. “We don’t have any unhappy clients,” says Marc from the spectacular living room of one of his custom-built model homes in Lyon’s Landing. “Building your home can be a very overwhelming experience. With every project, our mandate is to go above and beyond to make our customers comfortable throughout the process, and to continue this after the home is done. It doesn’t stop when the homeowner gets the key.” The couple also takes great pride in the fact that no two builds are the same — ever. They are unwavering on this. “Every client or family that moves into their home is guaranteed a skillfully crafted home with the knowledge that it is uniquely theirs,” says Crystal. There is something wonderful about that. “We always start with a clean slate, working with our designer from the ground up, allowing our clients full control,” adds Marc. “That seems to resonate with people.” There’s no doubt the entire team of employees at Charette Custom Homes and the carefully chosen sub-contractors take great pride in every home they build — and with a limited number of builds per year, quality is uncompromised. “In limiting the number of builds we do, we know we have superior quality control, and that’s what ensures our clients’ happiness,” explains Crystal, a certified interior decorator. Crystal’s superb interior decorating services come standard with each custom home. “I want to offer my knowledge on any item they would like assistance with,” she says. “If they would like me to meet with them to design the kitchen, or help them choose stone, I am going to be there. It’s my pleasure to do so.”

Planning a Home Renovation

R

enovations are done for a number of reasons: to create additional space, increase energy efficiency, or to boost the resale value. As with any major project, planning is key to ensuring the most impact on your investment. If you’re about to tackle a home renovation project, here are some tips: Create a plan and stick to it Determine the renovations you want to do. Are you renovating to change the style of your home, upgrade structural issues or create energy efficiencies? Develop your plan. Get advice. A real estate agent will advise on what changes would provide a solid return, while an interior designer will help create a design proposal and determine how to get the most return on your investment. A design plan will also provide the contractor with drawings to minimize mistakes and misunderstandings. Budgets are crucial Determine your means to pay for your renovation plan. Make sure your budget is affordable, and be prepared to stick to it. Extra expenses may arise, so set aside a contingency of at least 10 per cent of the budget. Establish a savings plan or determine what money you have already saved specifically for renovations. Also remember ‘sweat equity’ can save you money. Considering financing? Understand your financing options. Common options include

a secured or unsecured line of credit, refinancing a mortgage or a personal loan. The Solutions Banking™ All-in-One is a home equity line of credit well suited for this purpose. Call me for more information on these options. Do your research Choosing a contractor should be done with care. Talk to friends and family to get recommendations. Get quotes too, and ask for references. If the renovation project is to improve energy efficiency, see what government support is available. All levels of government often offer programs to help cover some of these expenses. It’s also important to research whether a building permit is required by talking to your local municipality. If you live in a condo, check with the management company first to identify what approval is required. Getting a return on your investment Are you renovating to increase the value of your home? Keep in mind some home improvements offer better returns. The Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC) tells us how much you spend on a home improvement should depend on how long you plan to live there. If you’re not planning on staying in your home for a long time, less expensive renovations are wiser. Homeowners are also urged to consider the neighbourhood they live in before spending too much on a home renovation. A particular market may have an expectation of cost, so the investment of your renovation may be excessive. Less expensive items such as lighting, cabinet hardware, paint and

landscaping can update the look of your home. If you’re renovating to improve energy efficiency, the return will be apparent in lower operating costs. This will pay over a longer period of time, or be a selling feature. Key Points Ø Write a plan! Avoid misunderstandings and delays. Ø Create a budget and stick to it. Ø Location, location, location… and time living in the home impact how much to invest. If you have any questions about planning a home renovation, I would be happy to help.

creating Curb Appeal by Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

I

t’s never too early to start planning springtime renovation projects. Enhancing your home’s curb appeal should be one of the first items to check off your to-do list when the warmer weather arrives — in this case, external beauty matters. 96

ReFINEdKINGSTON

“Curb appeal is important for many reasons, but the main reason is first impressions,” says Jeff Easton, sales representative with RE/MAX Finest Realty. “You only get one chance to make a first impression, so having great curb appeal will give potential buyers that warm and fuzzy feeling when they drive up to the home.” Potential buyers, he says, want to know the sellers have pride of ownership in their home.

storage. “A well-manicured lawn and thoughtout gardens can make a huge difference,” explains Easton. “Taking care of a lawn is time consuming but really important,” he adds. “Nothing is worse then seeing a dried up ugly lawn full of weeds.”

Greater Gardens

Begin by clearing the remnants of fall and winter out of your garden — twigs, leaves and debris are unsightly, but easily dealt with. Place any organic material you clear from your garden into your Green Bin or paper leaf bags; it can be diverted from the landfill.

Once the frost dissipates, roll up your sleeves and get those gardening tools out of winter

Now is also an ideal time to divide many perennials, and to put down some fresh mulch.

wanted a candy-apple red door does not mean it will work with your house. If your door is older, avoid paints with a glossy finish. You don’t want all your hard work to be for naught; the door’s imperfections will be even more visible with this type of finish. Also consider replacing any old hardware (the lockset and handle, for example) with something new. It’s a small, inexpensive change that can have a big impact. If you want to undertake a bigger project, consider painting the entire exterior of your home. It’s a grueling job, but it can have a massive payoff. If you lack time and patience, it may be best to call in a professional to get the job done right. It requires much more than a slap-dash effort. While you (or the professional you hired) is at it, remember to give your window trim, shutters and garage door a fresh coat of paint as well — it’s worth the extra money and effort.

See Things in a New Light Chances are, your front entrance has sported the same lights since your home was built. It’s time for something new. Opt for something bold to make a statement. If your home has more of a traditional style, oil-rubbed bronze is a great choice. A more modern house might be better suited to lights with a brushed nickel finish and sleek, contemporary lines.

by doing this, you’ll avoid a runway effect.

Tile Your Doorstep Retire that worn-out, ragged welcome mat and tile your front porch. Equal parts functional and stylish, a newly tiled front porch is like a facelift for your house. Get creative, and find a design that excites you. It’s a great way to express your home’s personality, and makes a huge impact as guests arrive.

Walk This Way Usher guests to your front door with a new walkway; if it’s sprouting weeds and debris, it’s not only a tripping hazard, but it looks unsightly as well. Whether it’s a fresh layer of gravel, artfully arranged stepping stones, intricately placed brick, or simple concrete, choose something you love — it will be the first thing to welcome you home every day. Interlock pavers are a great option because they’re durable and can stand up to frequent use. Whatever you choose, if it’s done well, a walkway will not only enhance your home’s overall look, it can improve the function as well. RK

You might also wish to place some solar lights along your pathway to make getting to your front door safer. Try staggering them slightly;

It may seem like a lot of work now, but will save you endless hours of weeding when summer arrives.

Revive With Paint There’s nothing like a new coat of paint to give your home a fresh, updated appearance. Begin with your front door — it’s how you welcome all guests into your home. Is the paint chipping away, or does it sport a faded, outof-date colour? Choose a new shade that not only suits your personal style, but your home as well. Just because you’ve always

How To Choose Light Fixtures For Your Home

F

inding the right lights for your home isn’t always as easy as it sounds. There are many factors to consider, including the size and colour of the room, and what the lighting will be used for. The following tips will give you the know-how to choose the right lighting for every room in your home. Guiding Light Lighting can quickly make or break a room, so when shopping for fixtures, I focus on the ceiling fixtures, table lamps and floor lamps, making sure each room has an original mix of shapes, finishes, textures and design styles. When I am able to choose, I’m drawn to classic industrial fixtures because they work with any interior style, and also mix well with a wide variety of furnishings and artwork. If you favour a more traditional approach, an iron and crystal chandelier is classic and timeless. Power In Numbers

Overhead and Task Lighting

Finding a perfectly sized fixture to anchor a large room can be daunting, but grouping the same or slightly similar fixtures together can solve this issue. Just ensure the scale of each fixture is proportionate to the other.

Always try to add overhead lighting that makes a statement of its own. Include task lighting such as table, desk or floor lamps for a successful mix of various lighting elements. You’ll have lighting at different levels, eliminating the possibility of harsh shadows and isolated hot spots.

Visual Weight

Colour Influence

Think of a space compositionally and make sure each element carries its weight and holds its own against the other. If you like the look of large table lamps, opt for fixtures made of glass. You still get the shape and scale needed for impact, but because you can see through the lamp, it lessens the visual weight.

When choosing light fixtures, it is important to consider the effect they can have on colours at night when there is artificial light. In cases where a room is painted a dark colour or a more saturated tone, diffused light fixtures — such as drum pendants made of fabric — are ideal.

Reflective Qualities

Services

Reflective objects play a big part in the overall lighting by creating a rich, warm glow, as well as an interesting play on shapes and shadows on nearby floors, walls and ceilings.

Our qualified staff provide personal attention in a boutique setting. Consultations and lighting layouts available upon request. We look forward to helping you enjoy your next lighting experience.

Creating Your Personal Style is Easy With

P

ersonal style is in the details — whether you include pops of your favourite colour in artwork or with throw pillows, display an abundance of beloved family heirlooms, or favour the simplicity of modern décor, it’s the elements found within our homes that define who we are. Personal style can change as often as we do; updating décor to reflect such constant transformation can be as complicated as starting over. At Jacob Nathan, we understand change can be intimidating, but it can also be exciting and fun. We carry an ever-changing inventory to meet your fluctuating needs, whether you’re seeking large pieces of furniture or smaller décor items to personalize your space. We have chosen three ways to introduce functional design to your décor this spring: the patterned chair, a console table and an ottoman (or two!).

Pop Goes the Pattern Whether your décor is neutral or bold, a side chair in an interesting pattern can transform the look of your room without a large budget. Choose a tone-on-tone pattern in a complementary colour if you already have a bold pattern in your room. If your space is neutral, dare to be a little adventurous — we offer a large selection of fun fabrics to amp up your space. Table of Contents How often do you find yourself searching for your car keys, tube of lipstick, or wallet? A console table is the perfect catchall for everyday essentials; it can make getting out the door a little easier in the morning. Choose one with extra storage and if possible, a place for a small lamp to welcome you home at night. Piecing It All Together An ottoman is the perfect piece of furniture; it can serve as an extra seat, storage, or as a handy place to put your feet or a tray of snacks. With many sizes, fabrics and shapes available, there is an ottoman for everyone and every style.

I’ve always been decorating, I didn’t even really realize it. I just love to make things pretty.” Her passion is evident. Jolie Home Décor and Furniture offers an endless selection of fabrics and finishes to create the home of your dreams, says Lisa. Whenever possible, the store offers Canadianmade products. “We sometimes get so caught up in the cheapest solution,” she says. “People need to look at all the great Canadian manufacturing that is going on. There are a lot of great Canadian manufacturers getting lost in the shuffle.” As such, Jolie Home Décor and Furniture offers items from wellrespected Canadian companies such as SILVA, which features designs by home décor expert and television personality Sarah Richardson. “Her designs are beautiful,” says Lisa, appropriately seated in a gorgeous armchair designed by Richardson. “It’s super comfy, but timeless. It’s not trendy… so if you’re going to invest in something, it’s best to invest in something like this that offers clean lines and comfort.” The store also carries items made by Quebec-based company AMISCO. Known for their top-quality steel furniture mixed with wood and upholstery, AMISCO is one of Canada’s top producers of durable stools, chairs, tables, beds and more. If it’s Canadian-made comfort you’re after, be sure to check out Jolie Home Décor and Furniture’s selection of Stylus products. A Vancouver-based company, Stylus is a made-to-order upholstery

company founded in 1959. With an amazing reputation for quality, Stylus offers many ways to personalize the furniture piece that is right for you. All these companies are not only Canadian, they are of great quality as well, points out Lisa. “This is so important to me. I only want to sell things I would put in my own home. I don’t want to stockpile items I wouldn’t use myself.” At Jolie Home, the owners believe the “bling” in every home is just as important as the furniture, and offer an endless selection of unique accessories. “It’s like any well put together outfit,” says Lisa. “You can have some really great statement pieces, but you need that little bit of sparkle that completes it. Things like pillows, lamps and rugs really pull a room together. And you can also change the look of a room with [these items], without having to spend a fortune to do it.” Enhance your home with Jolie Home’s selection of locally-made items, including works by Kingston artist Tim de Rose and local photographer Steph Hogeboom. “We have so much local talent to showcase in Kingston,” says Lisa. “Kingstonians are quite proud; they like to feel good about what they’re buying.” Jolie Home’s showroom is constantly changing to meet the style trends and your home needs — be sure to stop by for a visit and to see how Lisa and Peter can help make your home “Tres Jolie.” RK

Designing a Functional Kitchen

Recipe For Success by Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home — the hub of the domestic wheel — but it can quickly become useless if it’s poorly designed. Here’s how to take your kitchen (and cooking!) to the next level, and make your space functional and fabulous. 108 ReFINEdKINGSTON

Advanced Appliances Like everything else, appliances these days have gone high-tech; single-use items need not apply. Want to check the weather, update your Facebook status or Instagram a photo of your latest culinary masterpiece? Use your fridge’s touchscreen. If you need to get food going at a moment’s notice, opt for an induction range. They heat up quickly, and allow for incremental heat adjustment. Tired of adjusting the settings on the dishwasher? These days, there’s no need. Many dishwashers can sense how dirty the dishes inside it are, and will adjust their own settings accordingly. Want an oven that takes the guesswork out of cooking? Opt for a

lighting. Properly combing these different types is the key to culinary success — it’s called “layered lighting” and it can make all the difference when it comes to preparing meals. Before you begin, consider how you use the space — it makes it easier to identify where you need the light, and what type of light is best. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination in the kitchen — it’s the most common form of lighting found in homes and can come in the form of recessed or ceiling-mounted fixtures. Meanwhile, task lighting illuminates a specific area in the kitchen to make cooking easier and safer. Consider under-cabinet lighting; it not only casts a soft, welcoming glow over those granite countertops you just installed, it also makes it easier to read recipes and chop vegetables. Accent lighting draws attention to a particular object or feature in a room — perhaps exposed brick walls or a favourite painting. This should be the last type of lighting you plan — consider it as a decorative bonus in your kitchen.

Countertops While appearance may play a huge role in the choice of your countertop, there are other factors you should consider before making your final decision. Be sure to also consider durability, cost and future maintenance. Granite is the most popular choice for many reasons. It’s not only available in a wide range of colours, it’s also available in two finishes — polished and matte. It’s durable, so can stand up to regular use, and can help protect against the formation of mold and mildew. Quartz countertops are just as durable and beautiful and manufacturers can ensure the slab is exactly the colour, texture and pattern that you want. Laminate is also popular — and for good reason. Laminate counters are remarkably durable; they can withstand stains and heat almost as well as materials that cost much more. An added bonus? They come in a wide variety of colours and designs.

Kitchen Islands No matter how large your kitchen is, the more counter space you have, the better. A kitchen island not only provides this space, it can also offer additional storage and extra seating — and in the hub of the home, this is always key. A built-in island can serve as a dramatic centrepiece in your kitchen; customize the size, shape and style accordingly. If you want to keep the look and feel of your kitchen light and airy, opt for open storage below. It helps the eye flow through the room, rather than breaking up the space. If you want to hide away those pots and pans, create out-of-sight storage that’s easy to access whenever you need it. model that features specialized cooking modes, pre-programed recipes, and dual convection fans for even cooking. Some ovens even offer Bluetooth technology, so you can start preheating the oven for dinner on your way home from work. Bon appétit!

See the Light There are three types of lighting to consider when designing a functional kitchen: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent

Small kitchen spaces are not exempt from islands. Opt for a cart style — they’re inexpensive and since they’re mobile, can be pushed aside when space is at a premium. When you’re designing or choosing an island, bear in mind that you need to leave enough space for foot traffic — and you’ll need to leave additional room if you plan to use the area for extra seating.

Other options include butcher block, stainless steel, marble and concrete. Just keep in mind that some surfaces allow an integrated sink for a seamless look, while others require a surface mount or an undermount sink. Some also require more maintenance than others.

Flooring Prone to plenty of foot traffic and inevitable spills, there’s no denying kitchen floors can take a serious beating; but while it’s important for flooring to be durable, you want it to make a design statement as well. Consider sturdy ceramic tile, which comes in endless colours and styles, and can withstand stains, bacteria and moisture. You can also personalize it with trim pieces, borders and inlays, and fend off Kingston’s cold winter chill with in-floor radiant heating. Wood also continues to be popular among today’s homeowners — offering a warm, welcoming, timeless appearance. Though it will last you for years to come, staining or painting in the future can alter its overall look. RK

Spring Moving

by Mike and Heather Frappier AMJ Campbell

T

hey say April showers bring May flowers. But in Canada, the rain and cool temperatures can persist. If you are planning to move during the spring months when weather can be unpredictable, it’s smart to prepare for the best and expect the worst. Some people may think a little rain won’t hurt anyone, but when you are moving, that is not the case. Wet weather can cause slippery, hazardous conditions — especially when it is cool. Rain and cold weather can also ruin your boxes. We want to help you prepare for your spring move, so here are a few tips to keep your belongings safe:

Wear Proper Attire Waterproof gear is your safest — and driest — option. Also be sure to dress warmly, as the temperatures are likely to be cooler in the morning during the spring. Try layering your outfit so you can remove clothing as the temperature rises throughout the day. It’s also important to wear pants that fit properly — you don’t want to trip on long hems when you’re doing heavy lifting. When it comes to footwear, opt for sneakers or running shoes (nothing featuring an open toe or a heel) with slip-resistant soles that will prevent you from falling. Make sure to take off your shoes once you enter the home to keep the floors from getting wet.

Spring Cleaning Protect Your Boxes and Valuables Make a list of items you plan on taking to your new home and a list of things to sell, donate and toss. If you can, aim to de-clutter one room per day or each weekend. Set reminders on your smartphone or calendar. Take your time — don’t try to clean your entire home in one weekend.

Don’t be shocked if your boxes get a little wet during your move. While you can do your best to keep them covered, it might prove to be difficult — especially if it’s raining or damp outside. Before moving day, purchase proper storage bins sturdy enough to hold weight and keep water out.

Once you arrive at your new home, unpack boxes as soon as you can to prevent damaging the items inside them.

Keep a Towel Handy Absorbent cloths or towels are helpful when you and your movers are constantly walking in and out of your home. Wipe up any residue to reduce slipping hazards. Rain or shine, moving companies should always provide floor runners that will protect your floors from getting damaged during a move. Consider Storage Consider storing any unneeded items like camping gear or Christmas ornaments before your move. The key is to clear countertops, and eliminate personal items while your home is for sale.

useful for local realtors as they help sellers prepare their homes for the market. The company has seen massive growth in the past year, adding multiple vehicles and staff members to the team. “Other companies only offer one small facet of what we do…like carpet shampooing, or window cleaning,” says Simpson. “We can do almost anything in the house from closet organization to pre or postconstruction cleanup.” The All Ways Clean crews arrive at clients’ properties with all the supplies necessary to ensure a thorough cleaning. The company uses the newest in Dyson vacuum technologies. They also use commercial grade Swish and Cintas cleaning products, which are not available for direct purchase. Rather than paper towel products, the company uses microfiber cloths, and employ a colour-coded system in order to eliminate any chance of cross contamination.

Simpson’s large crew, a young, vibrant and energetic team, works 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to offer clients fast turnaround time. “The entire team genuinely cares about their work, and always goes above and beyond to provide exceptional results,” says Simpson. “Whether it’s taking the family pet for a stroll around the block or running an extra load of laundry, the team makes sure they do something special at every property. Any cleaner can come in and scrub your bathroom, no problem. But we really try to add that loving extra touch every time. Our clients are wowed when they come home, and we leave treats, too!” For Simpson, it’s important All Ways Clean makes its clients’ experience a memorable and special one. “We get to know the family’s needs,” she says. “We want to know everything about our clients and their properties. We create a unique experience for every client

and pride ourselves on customer satisfaction.” “All Ways Clean did such an amazing job on my home,” says client Britt Tulk. “I am so beyond pleased! I did not think it could be this clean ever again. They organized, decluttered and beautified on top of all of the deep cleaning they did in one day. I hope they will come back again; I would be more than pleased to continue using their services! I highly recommend [them].” “I don’t think I have ever seen our house so spotless,” says client Ashley Fielding. “Everything sparkled! Which Funding Option Is Right For You?

Bryce Parisotto (CFP) Shannon Bennett-Parisotto (CHS) Benefits Consulting Plus Inc. 1375 Gardiners Road, Suite 101, Kingston

istorically, owners of small and medium-sized businesses have had one funding option for their health and dental benefits. But in recent years, some additional options have emerged. Owners of smaller businesses can now choose one or a combination of these funding options. How you choose to proceed will depend on the level of premium risk and claim risk you are willing to accept on behalf of your business and employees. An employee benefits specialist can help you examine these options and recommend the right funding option, coupled with an appropriate plan design for your business. The Fully Insured Plan: With a fully insured plan, the business agrees to pay a monthly premium to the insurance carrier. In turn, the insurance carrier assumes responsibility for all eligible claims payments, as defined by the chosen plan design. The employees immediately have access to all the benefits included in their plan, which could include prescription drugs, dental, semi-private hospital coverage, vision care, etc. A review of claims and plan pricing is then negotiated annually. An advisor specialising in employee benefits will negotiate with the insurance carrier on your behalf and explain how your claims experience is impacting your plan pricing.

monthly premium. However, for this cost savings, the risk of a higher than anticipated claims is transferred to the business; and there lies the “risk/reward” decision. It’s important to remember there is an additional potential upside; claims being less than expected. That is where ASO funding becomes very attractive. The business owner must understand and be prepared to assume premium fluctuations resulting from claim volatility. Healthcare Spending Accounts (HCSAs): With healthcare spending accounts, the premium risk is shifted away from the business. HCSAs are simply an account funded by the employer to a specified maximum, for example $1,500 per employee each year. The employee can claim against their annual allotment for any Healthcare or Dentalcare expense. As a result, the premium risk to the business is low as the expense is capped at the annual allotment multiplied by the number of employees. Where HCSAs differ from both of the previous options is in the increased claim risk to employees. If an employee or family member is faced with a large health expense, they can hit the HCSA limit quickly. In simple terms, an HCSA provides no insurance to the employee in the face of a catastrophic health situation. Summary:

Administrative Services Only (ASO): From the employee point of view, the ASO plan functions identically to the fully insured plan. Where this option differs is in the premium risk to the business. With ASO funding options, premiums are a function of the claims paid plus an administration fee to the insurer for processing the claims. Assuming claim patterns are normal during the year, the claims paid plus the administration fee can total less out of pocket money in comparison to the fully insured
