Dear Field Hockey Players, Parents and Fans, Welcome to the 2020 SHA Apple Tournament! Now, more than ever, we are so happy you are here, and your young athletes are competing in the 48th annual Apple Tournament. I am an avid sports fan but growing up in Elizabethtown and working in Lexington and New Orleans, I was not exposed to field hockey until coming to Sacred Heart Schools this year. I have enjoyed watching games here on Horton Field these last weeks and learning the game! No matter what happens on the field this year, we can all agree that these young women and their coaches can be commended for their commitment to safely playing the game they love during these unprecedented times. At Sacred Heart Schools, students age 1 to 18 are guided by the legacy of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville and our Core Values of community, leadership, reverence and service. Throughout our four schools, we are transforming lives through excellence in academics, leadership development, faith formation, arts exploration, athletic growth and accomplishment, and service outreach. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) campus, Sacred Heart Schools are providing innovative learning that is forward-thinking, future-looking and globally focused. In addition to core content, our students are also learning and developing the 21st century skills and character traits they’ll need to become globally minded problem-solvers. With IB, we teach students how to research and analyze information and apply their learning across subjects and to the world outside the classroom. An IB education equips students with the tools they need to become compassionate leaders who are ready to make the world a better place. Schools that still associate academic excellence with memorization are preparing their students for success in the last century. That’s not IB. Our students are not passive recipients of content. IB classrooms are engaging and active and create lifelong learners. Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) is a college preparatory school for girls founded in 1877 by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. A national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Sacred Heart Academy is an IB World School with 100 percent of the students pursuing higher education in hundreds of colleges and universities. The Class of 2020 earned more than $27 million in college scholarships. SHA has won 93 state athletic championships, including seven in the last two years. The school has more than 10,000 amazing alumnae – our Forever Valkyries. Sacred Heart Model School (SHMS) is a JK-8 coeducational school and the area’s only Catholic school to offer the IB Primary and Middle Years and programs. Founded in 1924, SHMS promotes excellence in education by focusing on the personal success of each child. A 2018 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, SHMS offers a well-rounded education including world language as part of its core curriculum, performing arts classes within the school day, an array of extracurricular offerings including chess, quick recall and choir, as well as a comprehensive athletic program. Sacred Heart Preschool (SHP) provides comprehensive early childhood education programs. As an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) Early Years school, our fundamental approach is focused on IB’s dynamic cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. Our curriculum is student-centered and promotes each student’s social, emotional, academic, spiritual and physical growth. The principles of IB PYP are informed by best practices in education. Sacred Heart School for the Arts (SHSA), fully-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, provides opportunities for students of all ages to pursue careers in the arts or to enrich their lives through music, dance, drama or visual art. In addition to its after-school tuition-based classes, SHSA provides instruction through an arts integration program as part of the school day for the schools on the Ursuline Campus. In 2007, Sacred Heart Schools welcomed the renowned Louisville Youth Choir as artist in residence to SHSA. For more information or to schedule a tour of any school, please find Sacred Heart Schools online at shslou.org. I wish each team success, on and off the field throughout the 2020-21 academic year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Karen McNay President, Sacred Heart Schools

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS COMPETING!
Dear Field Hockey and Apple Tournament Fans, On behalf of the Sacred Heart Community, I welcome you to the Apple Tournament. Sixteen varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams from across the region will compete in the 2020 tournament. We are particularly grateful to be able to host this 48th annual event in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Special thanks go to all who have incorporated additional measures to ensure a healthy and safe tournament. As we begin this tournament, I wish all of the teams success. Although success may be measured by many people as wins and championships, remember that success is also measured through teamwork and sportsmanship. May we have a safe, healthy and injury-free tournament full of positive support for our athletes. Many, many thanks to our parents, students and alumnae who have spent countless hours volunteering to make this tournament a success. They are the backbone of all that is good at Sacred Heart Academy. In order to give back to the community for all it has given to us, we will be donating a portion of the proceeds of this tournament to Twisted Pink, an organization which supports and funds metastatic cancer research and was founded by one of our Sacred Heart field hockey parents and ALK Positive, a patient-driven organization, dedicated to improving the lives of ALK-positive lung cancer patients through support and groundbreaking research. We are thrilled that you have come out to watch some excellent hockey and support these very worthy causes. May God bless those who are competing, coaching and running this tournament. Amy Nall, Ed.S. Interim Principal, Sacred Heart Academy

Their strong spirits and beautiful smiles continue to bless this field. Please visit the memorial plaque dedicated to the memory of Lauren and Jenna. Lauren, a field hockey player and team captain, and Jenna, a soccer player and collegiate star, were both graduates of Sacred Heart Academy’s Class of 2001. Lauren and Jenna played on this field as seniors after anxiously awaiting its completion most of their high school careers. Both girls attended the field’s dedication, and Lauren sang solo for the opening National Anthem. During Jenna’s brief returns from college, she continued her training by running laps on this track. Lauren attended Auburn University and Jenna attended the University of Nebraska. Both girls died in their junior year of college at the age of 21 in separate tragedies. Their strong leadership and determination continue to inspire many young players to follow their dreams and be who they are inside. 48th ANNUAL APPLE TOURNAMENT

Wendy Lee Martin The Apple Tournament is pleased to announce the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, in honor of Louisville field hockey stalwart and inspiration, Wendy Lee Martin. After playing NCAA Division I basketball at the University of Kentucky (19721975), Wendy Lee Martin took the reins of a proud Louisville Collegiate School field hockey tradition in 1981. In her 32year tenure with Collegiate, she has lead the Amazon Field Hockey Program to 11 State Championships and coached 6 AllAmericans. In 1993, Wendy and co-author W.F. Axton published the definitive Spalding Sports Series book about the game entitled simply “Field Hockey” which informed and enlightened numerous generations of local coaches, players and parents. In 2009, Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She never let that diagnosis or the resulting surgery and treatment stand in her way as she lead the Amazons to the KY State Championship game that season. Wendy also coached Varsity basketball at Collegiate for 24 years, served as Athletic Director and taught Physical Education and Health. Selected by her peers as the Kentucky Field Hockey Association’s Coach of the Year a record 12 times, in 2002, Wendy was inducted in the Metro Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2010, she was inducted into the Louisville Collegiate School Athletic Hall of Fame. Since 2010, the local field hockey community has rallied around Wendy by raising thousands of dollars for breast cancer research. In 2014, the Stick it to Cancer Tournament and the Apple Tournament joined forces to sponsor one main event dedicating $5,000 in proceeds to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. In 2018 and 2019, the Apple Tournament awarded $5,000 towards the local charity, Twisted Pink, which provides funding to metastatic breast cancer research and was founded by Caroline Johnson, Sacred Heart Academy Field Hockey parent. We honor Wendy with providing a player in the Varsity Divisions with the Wendy Lee Martin Most Valuable Player Award.
