The Spirit of Saint Angela was ALIVE at SHA during Catholic Schools Week!
On January 27, 2022, our campus celebrated the Feast of St. Angela Merici, the founder of the Company of St. Ursula. Saint Angela encourages us to "build community wherever you go," and she certainly did that on that cold January Feast Day, greeting our students at SHMS and SHP at carpool! We are blessed to be sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, taught by the Sisters for so many years, and pass on the Charism of St. Angela Merici to the next generation. Administrators and teachers across Ursuline Campus and SHA Seniors also celebrated her Feast Day by wearing St. Angela socks, another sign of the special bond between the Ursuline Sisters and us.
We also celebrated Catholic Schools Week at SHA in many meaningful ways: celebrating Mass with the Archdiocese, presenting our alumnae faculty members roses to show our appreciation, giving of ourselves at the annual blood drive, and supporting the Ursuline Sisters and Paula's Pantry by bringing in canned goods for the Sisters Are Souper food drive.

In Serviam
By emulating St. Angela Merici's model of Serviam, these young women have demonstrated a Christ-like approach to putting others' needs first through their outstanding contributions of service to the community. They have thus received the Ursuline Education Network Service Award.
Valentina Moreno, SHA Class of 2023 “My experience with service related to international human rights issues can be credited to the Ursuline and International Baccalaureate education I have received at Sacred Heart Schools. With the support of WaterStep, I was able to serve a rural community in Colombia by installing a water purification system. I have also inspired my peers to advocate for issues that affect children worldwide by leading SHA’s United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Club and have interned at an organization that works with refugees in Stockholm, Sweden. Through service, I have been able to pursue my passion for international human rights issues and acknowledge that I can make a difference through my work.” Valentina founded the UNICEF club at SHA. Under her leadership, this club worked within the UNICEF Club International Guidelines, providing service-learning and philanthropic opportunities for Valkyries monthly for the past 2.5 years. Inspired to engage in service at the international level, Valentina sought a dual purpose JFLI Summer Internship with Baba-Stockholm Stadsmission (Sweden). During this internship, Valentina sought to understand the differences between the immigration asylum process in Sweden and the US. “Valentina is an incredibly bright, passionate student. Not only is she in Sacred Heart Academy’s most rigorous courses, but she also is committed to widening the clubs offered to SHA students. She founded the UNICEF chapter at SHA to enable students to have a more robust service-learning experience in addition to philanthropic opportunities.” ~ Lynne Link, SHA Service Coordinator and Theology Teacher

Arianna Martinelli, SHA Class of 2023 Arianna and her twin brother founded Tandem, a non-profit which is developing a mobile app to connect senior citizens to teens. This connection project aims to help solve the community problem of elderly loneliness while helping teens develop emotional intelligence/ social-emotional skills. Arianna’s experience with her grandmother during the height of the COVID pandemic inspired this project. “Over our frequent calls, I began to understand not just the facts and figures of my grandmother’s life, but the vibrant stories that constructed its rich tapestry. She passed on moments full of life and wisdom to me, and we both found great joy in companionship. Yet, as the pandemic raged on, my lively grandmother became isolated. Elderly loneliness, an enduring plague among the aging population exacerbated by the pandemic, was touching the world. Since June, Tandem has facilitated weekly 30-minute phone conversations between 12 pairs, enabling over 200 hours of connection. Tandem high schoolers continue to come back after fulfilling their service requirements for the meaningful relationship with their senior, intergenerational connections driven by shared wisdom, gratitude, and empathy. Seniors including Ursuline Sisters and Xaverian Brothers recount their stories and learnings from life, and high schoolers share their aspirations and different perspectives.” “Arianna is an excellent student, engaging in the most rigorous courses at Sacred Heart Academy. While her academics set her apart from other students, her passion for building connections also is exemplary.” ~ Lynne Link, SHA Service Coordinator and Theology Teacher
FROM THE Alumnae Director Dear Valkyrie Sisters, Happy 2022! I am eager to share what our SHA alumnae community has been up to since my last update. As I mentioned in the fall HeartBeat, we continue to live out our core value of Community this academic year, and our students, families, and alumnae should be so proud of what we have accomplished in the first half of our school year. A 25-year tradition, the Sister Brendan Appalachian Gift Drive (named for Sister Brendan Conlon) once again brought great joy to the families living in Mingo County, West Virginia, as our Sacred Heart family gave so generously to bring Christmas cheer to those in need. Our effort – led by the SHA CAC (Community Awareness Committee) in collaboration with our entire campus community – supported ABLE Families and Christian Help, Inc., two agencies that help families in rural West Virginia. We filled children’s gift requests and provided meals and gift cards to parents. Just days after the Gift Drive concluded, communities in Western Kentucky were devasted by an EF4 tornado. In response, our students and faculty – this time, led by Whitney Collins Thompson ’01, SHA varsity tennis coach – once again came together to collect needed supplies and transported them to Marshall and Graves Counties. The Forever Valkyries Club and Sacred Heart Schools institutional advancement staff volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul “Santa’s Shop,” which allows those in need to shop for a special Christmas for
their families. It was a joy to serve alongside SHA ’62 alumna Donna DeMichael Young – who runs the volunteer program at St. Vincent DePaul – and students at a time that can be so difficult for many in our area. Time and time again, our SHA family comes together to lend a hand when called to serve. St. Angela would be so proud. Thanks to alumna and Campus Minister Andrea Willinger Hoback ’07, our alumnae enjoyed a quiet hour each week during Advent to reflect on the meaning of the season and join in prayer and reverence with one another. We enjoyed seeing alums from all over via Zoom and in-person for this spirituality series. Be on the lookout for announcements on social media and in your email box for the Lenten series this spring! Fall seems like a distant memory! I am amazed at how fast time continues to fly. We were thrilled to welcome alumnae for our fall Lunch & Learn sessions in the law and business fields and our 2021 Career Day at SHA. We are grateful for the nearly eighty women who returned on Career Day to share their paths and advice for juniors and seniors. These connections allow them to take advantage of our dynamic network of women who are always willing to give back to SHA. Thank you to our SHA Counseling Department faculty Erin Burke ’92 and Ron Padgett, and Jean Frazier Leadership Institute director Lauren Hitron ’99 and of course to our alumnae who gave of their time to meet with students!
If you are interested in joining us for a future event or hosting a student intern, please let me know. We are always seeking opportunities to enhance our students’ perspectives as they move toward college and careers. continued... SPRING 2022 HeartBeat

FROM THE Alumnae Director
The class of 2021 returned the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to see each other, pick up yearbooks and IB certificates and diplomas and see their traditional senior composite hanging alongside generations of SHA alumnae who came before them. We love our young alumnae and were so happy to have them in the building again! As you’ll see in the coming pages, we proudly celebrated our SHA Alumnae Awards honorees at a dinner on February 10 – the first in two years and I’m already accepting nominations for the 2023 awards! Thanks to all the alumnae who participated in the AlumnaeUnite annual fund challenge March 23-25. We are grateful for your support as we strive to grow our alumnae’s participation in the SHA annual fund. Did you know that in 2020-2021, 17% of living SHA alumnae were responsible for donating over $575,000 to the annual fund? Our funding needs continue to increase, so please know that your gift is never “too small” or “not enough.” Your cumulative gifts make our Dear Sacred Heart the premier educational institution for girls in our community. Don’t forget how important you are to that legacy! You still have time to help us reach our annual fund goal this year – see how in the pages to follow! Reunion Weekend 2022 is coming! June 3-5 classes ending in 2 and 7 will celebrate on campus, so be on the lookout for your invitations and register to join us! We’re bringing back our outdoor tailgate-style event for the Friday night kickoff and want to see YOU there!
In January, the Sacred Heart Schools Institutional Advancement team said goodbye to our Vice President and incredible leader, Beth Clingaman. Beth served many years on our campus, and her daughter Maddie will soon join us as a “forever Valkyrie” when she graduates this May. Throughout Beth’s time as VP of Institutional Advancement, she championed and successfully ran significant capital campaigns while overseeing recruitment/enrollment of our four campus schools, marketing/communications, four annual funds, the alumni program, and more. We will miss her but are excited for Beth as she begins her next chapter with Trilogy Health Foundation, and more importantly, we THANK her for her outstanding service to Sacred Heart Schools. As you can see, we are busy here on Lexington Road and are always open to connecting with more of you. If you have questions or are looking for ways to get involved with SHA, I invite you to give me a call or send me an email. Until then, I wish you well and hope to see many of you in the months ahead. With Heart, Megan Brumleve Theisen ‘95 SHA Alumnae Director

31ST ANNUAL
Alumnae Awards
After missing the live event in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were exuberant to gather as a community of Valkyries to honor the 2022 Sacred Heart Alumnae Award honorees! More than 300 special guests, including the Alumnae Board, SHA Administration, Institutional Advancement Team, family members, and friends, attended the 31st Annual Alumnae Awards on February 10, 2022. It was a joyous evening honoring some of the fantastic people whose contributions make Sacred Heart Academy so special and whose legacies inspire Valkyries to achieve at the highest levels in academics, athletics, arts, and leadership.
Alumna of the Year The prestigious honor of Alumna of the Year was bestowed upon Allison D. Aubrey ’86. Allison’s voice may be as familiar to you as it is to NPR listeners worldwide. As an award-winning and highly esteemed journalist, Allison has reported health and nutrition news for more than twenty years on NPR’s "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition," PBS, and CBS Sunday Morning. Allison’s journalistic motto is “outrage and inspire,” and her commitment to creating a mindful and healthy community has resonated with listeners and viewers around the country. Allison is also one-half of SHA’s only mother-daughter duo to both be named Alumna of the Year. Her mother, Barbara Siebert Aubrey ’62, was honored in 1998.
Ursuline Teaching Legacy Award This award honors the Ursuline Sisters’ legacy of teaching in Louisville and is presented annually to an alumna who has dedicated twenty or more years to education. Dr. Patricia M. Hart ‘69, Ph.D., has devoted her career to teaching, researching, leading, and mentoring at Catholic schools, where she has truly lived out the Ursuline Core Values. She was a professor at the University of Dayton in the Department of Teacher Education for 31 years, and she now proudly holds the title of Professor Emerita. SPRING 2022 HeartBeat

Honorary Diploma Honorary Diploma recipient Mrs. Jill Schurman has taught at SHA for 16 years and was the 2016 recipient of the Loretta P. Mudd Excellence in Teaching Award. She chairs the performing arts department, facilitates the IB Music curriculum, leads the Madrigal and A Capella choirs, assists students with auditions and SHSA performances, and universally champions her vocalists.
Heart Award The Heart Award is given to those who devote tremendous time to serve the needs and lives of others, significantly contributing to SHA and the community at large. Greg Daunhauer has been an active and trusted member of our Sacred Heart community as a parent, volunteer, board member, and Chair of the Board of Trustees, and continues to be an ambassador for Sacred Heart Schools and our mission. Marty Burke Murphy '67, the recipient of the Ursuline Teaching Legacy Award in 2009, is known throughout Louisville as a Strong Woman of Great Faith. She had a long and storied career as an Archdiocesan teacher, serving three years at St. Edward and 42 years at Holy Spirit School. Heather DeVore Lange '98 lives out the Ursuline Core Values each day through her work with the Hope for Hadley Jo Project and professionally as a women’s health nurse practitioner. Heather is an ambassador for the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana and a Girl Scout leader. 12

Valkyrie Hall of Fame Eleanor Cowley Mitchell '04 excelled as a two-sport athlete at SHA, competing in varsity field hockey and lacrosse. She played Division I field hockey at Davidson College and was team captain. Eleanor has coached SHA since 2010 and has led the Valkyries to four state titles, and has now three times been named the Kentucky Coach of the Year. As assistant SHA basketball coach since 1998, Matt Carson has watched with pride as his Valkyries have won four state championships and seven regional titles. “Uncle Matt,” as his players affectionately call him, mentors SHA athletes and stays in contact with his former players as they continue through collegiate basketball programs. Whitney Collins Thompson '01 played varsity tennis all four years at SHA and was team captain twice. As the SHA head tennis coach, Whitney’s team has won the state championship three times in the last five years. In 2018, Whitney was named the Coach of the Year by the Kentucky High School Tennis Coaches Association. Emma Brink '11 has been inducted into the Kentucky Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association Athletes Hall of Fame, joining the premier runners in the state’s history. At SHA, she was named Miss Kentucky Cross Country three times and Miss Kentucky Track and Field twice.
RESILIENCE
and
REVERENCE The morning after the SHA Alumnae Awards, Sacred Heart Academy’s students gathered in the gym to hear Allison Aubrey '86, the 2022 Alumna of the Year, speak about her time as a Sacred Heart student and her experience as a journalist at NPR and CBS Sunday Morning. Allison reflected on how the Ursuline Core Values have empowered her throughout her career and how SHA's all-girls Ursuline education allowed her to dream big and become a leader. During her time at SHA, every leader she knew was a woman, so it was her natural assumption that she too would be one. She also pointed to how resilience and reverence learned from her beloved family and Sacred Heart supported her career ambitions. Allison's advice for current students looking ahead to make a difference in the world: What circumstances do you find yourself in where you are so absorbed that time literally stands still? Start to pay attention to this. Show up for your life! Senior Claire Klein led a terrific Q&A session, asking Allison about her favorite NPR podcast and as well as her favorite ways to relax and unwind with her family. Thanks to Lauren Hitron and the Jean Frazier Leadership Institute and Megan Theisen and our fantastic alumnae association for bringing Allison back to campus. We know our Valkyries were inspired by Allison to be curious thinkers, work hard, engage with the world around them, and be Strong Women of Great Faith!

The Forever Ursuline campaign was a comprehensive fundraising initiative to usher Sacred Heart Schools’ facilities, programming, and endowment into the next era of innovation while ensuring we remained committed to our connection to the Ursuline Sisters and resolute in our dedication to the example and foundation they have established for our schools. Forever Ursuline was fully funded before moving into the campaign’s public phase, which is a testament to the confidence and support we enjoy from our Sacred Heart community. The initial goal was $17 million, and the campaign closed with $17,859,102. Forever Ursuline comprised six comprehensive campaign priorities.

HeartBeat SHSLOU.ORG
Ursuline Motherhouse and Grotto Renovation
For more than 100 years, the Motherhouse has been an integral piece of Ursuline history, and the completed restoration ensures it will remain so. The vital project provided for the future with the addition of an accessible entrance and conversion of space for administrative offices and meeting spaces for Sacred Heart Schools; and honored the past with the redesign of the outdoor Grotto and the creation of the Ursuline Legacy Room to preserve the history of the Ursuline Sisters and their impact on generations of Sacred Heart students. The Motherhouse now serves as the hub for the Sacred Heart Schools and Ursuline Sisters of Louisville administrative and leadership teams.
Jean Frazier Leadership Institute
The Jean Frazier Leadership Institute at Sacred Heart Schools was founded with an initial $1 million gift from Jean Wode Frazier, SHA ’52, with a goal of a matching endowment to ensure continued growth and measured success. The purpose of the Institute is to create a culture of leadership and produce world-ready, servant leaders through programming on campus. With the initial $1 million investment, Sacred Heart Schools hired Lauren Hitron as Director for the Institute and began formal programming. Four years later, the Institute is based upon three pillars: financial literacy, service, and leadership, with sixteen major initiatives that did not previously exist. Students are now engaged in leadership training with continuous programming, not one-and-done activities. The first class of Frazier Fellows will graduate in 2022 with the leadership distinction on their transcripts, with hundreds of Valkyries following in their footsteps. The addition of the Dr. Cynthia R. Crabtree Financial Literacy Pillar and the Charlie Kane Family Internship Program are taking the Institute to new levels and many more alumnae are engaging with students and faculty than ever before.
Innovation Spaces at SHA and SHMS
Our IB framework’s core is hands-on learning focused on studentcentered inquiry, collaboration, creativity, and innovation, traits necessary to prepare our students for the 21st-century workspace. Continual innovation at both SHA and SHMS are vital to attaining and surpassing these goals and allow Sacred Heart Schools to provide programming encouraging students to think, explore and design.
The Horton Family Accessible Education Center was constructed on the second floor of Ursuline Hall and opened its doors to SHA students in the fall of 2019. Through the Horton Family’s donation, SHA was able to envision and create a space designed to meet the needs of students, more than tripling the size of the previous center. The mission of the Learning Differences Program at SHA is to support and expand upon Sacred Heart Academy’s mission –to inspire diverse learners to become globally-minded, compassionate leaders. By offering additional support and services to students with documented learning differences, the program strives to educate each student in a way that fits her needs. To support the hands-on learning of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Sister Dominica Hettinger, OSU Science Lab serves Sacred Heart Model School’s Level Seven and Level Eight students with foundational experiment and safety features not typically present in a middle school lab setting. MYP science teacher, Elena Puentes, said the new lab enhances the chemistry and physics curriculum immensely, allowing for independent, student-led inquiry labs and more.
Endowment
The endowment for Sacred Heart Schools grew by more than $7 million during the Forever Ursuline campaign. The increase in financial aid provided an Ursuline education to families and students who otherwise would not have been able to attend. Eighteen new scholarships were developed through the campaign. The campaign also increased awareness of the benefits and ease of making a planned gift to the schools and recorded pledges of over $6 million in planned giving.
5-Year Annual Fund
In addition to the Endowment, the Sacred Heart Schools Annual Fund grew throughout the Forever Ursuline campaign beginning at $984,000 in 2017/18 and breaking the $1 million mark for the first time that following year. By the 2020/21 close, the Annual Fund had reached $1,062,000. Additionally, donations contributed by Sacred Heart Academy alumnae grew steadily each year, bringing in more than half the annual fund dollars each year.
Stepping into the Future
As a campus, we are undoubtedly in a stronger position now than five years ago and will be well into the future. The accomplishments of the Forever Ursuline campaign left our schools poised for continued growth, prosperity, and success. “I want to thank all of you for your generosity to make the vision come true and to make the Forever Ursuline campaign a total success in raising $17.8 million. Your dedication and commitment to Sacred Heart Schools is inspiring to me and will boost the impact and reach of this institution for years to come.” – Amy Montgomery Bergeron ’94, Campaign Co-Chair SPRING 2022 HeartBeat

Calling frOm the Heart HAVE YOU ANSWERED THE CALL? I start each student Phoneathon session by asking who in the room has never used an office phone before, and typically about half of the hands go up. For the next two hours, I work with students to dial outside lines, pronounce names, and ask for a donation over the phone to support the SHA Annual Fund. It is incredible how these young women light up when told ‘yes’ for the first time and ring their red cowbell in celebration.
SHA Phonathon
I
THE ANNUAL FUND
While Phoneathon is an essential tool for reaching the participation and financial goals of the Annual Fund, the calls also provide important record updates for alumnae and help student volunteers gain confidence and improve communication skills. Students learn to be resilient after being told ‘not right now’ or calling through a class with no one picking up the call. They are not just earning service hours; they are also gaining skills they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I hope that next time you see the familiar SHA number pop up on your caller ID, you take the call and the opportunity to speak with a student or a fellow SHA Alum. A few minutes of your time will have a lasting impact on our callers and Dear SHA. Thank you to everyone who has answered the call and supported the SHA Annual Fund this year. We are so lucky to have such a great network of strong women of great faith who have made a financial commitment to SHA this year. I am excited to share some of our donor stories this spring with you. These Valkyries have answered the call to support the SHA Annual Fund and ensure our next generation of women have access to the tools and resources they need to learn, grow and achieve. How do you stay connected to SHA? As many ways as I can! I keep in touch with classmates and friends, support my sister who is a senior at SHA, donate to the annual fund, and lead senior retreats. Why do you choose to support SHA while you are still in college? I am so appreciative of my four years at Sacred Heart, and I think supporting the annual fund is a small way for me to show my gratitude. What is your favorite SHA memory? I have a ton of favorite memories of my time at Sacred Heart, but a few that come to mind would be my senior retreat, field days, and even just the smaller moments like lunches in the cafeteria with my friends, and all my incredible teachers and friends throughout the four years. What is your advice for current and future Valkyries? Cherish it! I know you hear it all the time, but the time goes by SO fast, so enjoy it! Stay in touch with classmates after you graduate, they will keep you close to the HEART!
Valkyrie pride and love run deep in Caraline’s family. She is a 2019 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and a junior and member of the women’s swim team at Bellarmine University. Her mother, Amy Helm Baker graduated from SHA in 1992 along with sisters Kimberly Helm Scaglione ’89 and Meghan Helm Diehl ’99 and aunts, Jane Helm Gilbert ’62 and Lucy Helm ’75. Caraline’s sister Lainey is finishing her senior year and heading to the University of Delaware to play field hockey and sister Molly is looking forward to SHA in the coming years. YOU’RE A GEM! The Give Every Month (GEM) Club is a group of committed donors who have agreed to support the SHA Annual Fund monthly. Just like gemstones, GEM Club members are priceless to our community. Sustaining gifts to SHA provide a guaranteed revenue stream for our alma mater and allow administrators to feel confident that the resources needed to create an exceptional educational experience for every Valkyrie are available. Membership in the GEM Club allows donors to make a more significant impact with their giving by including a set amount that works within each person’s budget. We spoke with SHA alumna Jennifer Kreft Reynolds ’96 about her experience as a member of the GEM Club. What motivates you to support the SHA Annual Fund? My experience at SHA changed my life for the better. I learned leadership skills that impact my life to this day. I want to make sure that I am giving back and helping provide the same opportunities for other young women. How do you stay connected to SHA? Since college, I have lived in the Cincinnati area so staying connected requires creativity. I serve as a 1996 class rep, follow SHA on social media, and attended a Cincinnati alumnae event a couple of years ago. Why should alumnae support the Annual Fund? Every gift helps the Annual Fund, no matter how big or small. It makes me feel really good to know that I am giving back to a school that gave me so much. It is a blessing to pay it forward to current and future Valkyries. Why should alumnae join the Give Every Month (GEM) Club? I love the Give Every Month Club because I can "set it and forget it.” I determine how much I can afford to contribute each month, and it is automatically deducted. Because it is spread out through the year, it doesn't feel like a burden. What is your favorite SHA memory? There are so many to choose from! One of my fondest memories was serving as Student Council President with Teresa (Pasquini) Wallace, the 100 Club President. We reunite every five years to help plan the class reunion, and it is like no time has passed. What is your advice for current and future Valkyries? Make the most of your time at SHA. Get involved in clubs and activities. Step up to lead in areas where you have a true passion. These are life skills that will benefit you in college and beyond!

Celebrating Classes from 1962-2017 ending in 2 and 7
Did you know that Reunion Weekend giving is a big part of our Annual Fund success each year? Last year 19% of alumnae in the classes ending in 1 and 6 supported the annual fund. In 2022, can we get to 22% or more? Making a gift in celebration of your reunion year is a great way to give back to a place that gave us all so much. Here are a few fun and easy ways to make your gift count: • Give to the Heart. Visit www.shslou.org/giving/ or mail a check to SHA Annual Fund, 3115 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY 40206 • Make it a friendly competition. Consider making a challenge or matching gift to SHA to help your class increase participation in the Annual Fund. • Recognize a milestone. If your class is celebrating a special reunion year, there are many ways we can help you make a special contribution. Support or create a scholarship, set a participation goal tied to your grad year, or simply encourage donations and attendance. Contact Sarah Wunderlin '04 at swunderlin@shslou.org to discuss ideas!
