Dear alumnae, parents, and friends,

Welcome to the Summer Heartbeat! We have much to celebrate as an SHA community since our last issue, including the unparalleled accomplishments and efforts of our students, an outstanding class of 2023 Alumnae Award honorees, the incredible generosity of alumnae in the Annual Fund, and April’s Alumnae Unite campaign, Lunch & Learns, Honors Day celebration and Reunion Weekend, to name a few. My gratitude for the women who give their time, talent, and treasure deepens daily as more and more of you step up to support students and your alumnae sisters. I hope you’ll take some time to learn about this year’s Alumnae Award honorees – a class of men and women who so beautifully embody our Ursuline core values of reverence, service, leadership, and community.

Sacred Heart Preschool. We are blessed to have Dr. Adams at SHA and look forward to his leadership in the coming year. Hopefully, you’ve taken advantage of our beautiful Ursuline campus this summer, whether for a walk, a summer camp or a class for your children, or Reunion Weekend – we never slow down around here, and it is a joy to work on this beautiful campus. I hope the stories on these pages and all our student and alumnae achievements give you countless reasons to be proud to be a Valkyrie. It is through our shared commitment to our Sacred Heart community that our excellent Ursuline education continues. I invite you to share the good news about Sacred Heart Academy, our students, alumnae, and all the opportunities at SHA.

Thank you for all you do for SHA!

HeartBeat

I am excited that Dr. Tim Adams will lead Sacred Heart Academy in the 20232024 academic year. We are grateful for his leadership of SHA. He brings not only a commitment to his faith and a deep understanding of best practices in teaching but also a keen knowledge of the International Baccalaureate Programme and how the philosophy empowers students to become critical thinkers prepared to solve the world’s challenges. Dr. Adams is married to a Valkyrie – Whitney Ising Adams ’08 – and their two young daughters attend The Heartbeat

Each time I have been in the building this summer, I have found teachers and administrators engaged in discussion and laughter, talking about how excited we are for the new school year. The enthusiasm we have for the year ahead only increases when Dr. Adams joins the conversation; the love he has for SHA and the commitment he has to expanding on our tradition of excellence comes across in every interaction with him. And he's already promised all of the incoming freshman jolly ranchers if he doesn't know their name within the first few months!

Alumnae Director

Summer Greetings!

Authentically Catholic. Proudly Ursuline. As I collaborate with my colleagues and SHA Alumnae Board on plans for a new school year, these four simple words are guiding our work and ground us in our roots. For nearly 146 years, Sacred Heart has given thousands of young women a foundation for life built on faith, academic preparation, service, arts enrichment, athletics, friendship, and so much more. I know that our compassionate and committed leadership, faculty, and staff are helping us be poised for yet another year of inspiring service and excellence in all disciplines at SHA.

Have you ever heard of Laudato Sí, Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical that calls all Catholics (and, more broadly, humankind) to care for the natural world and its people? As a Catholic community, we are proud to do our part – along with the deeply committed Ursuline Sisters of Louisville – to reduce our environmental impact. We have several environmentally focused initiatives on campus, including changes that will reduce our consumption of the earth’s natural resources AND provide alumnae with more timely updates and connections.

Beginning with this first issue of the 2023-24 school year, the HeartBeat will look slightly different!

We will move to two HeartBeat issues yearly. But rest assured; our beloved alumnae magazine will continue to feature our talented and kind students and alumnae community as you’ve come to expect.

The “Class Notes” section will go digital; alumnae can begin/ continue to provide real-time updates on personal milestones (i.e., marriage, births, jobs) via your class’s designated Facebook group. You should also utilize this to request prayers or to notify one another of important life events and needs. Contact your class reps or the Alumnae Office if you need help accessing your group.

The Memorial section will focus solely on alumnae who we have lost. We know of the importance of the memorial section and will continue to share notice of family losses digitally.

You will see more features on alumnae and their leadership, careers, service, and community-building efforts, highlighting just some of the inspiring women whom we call Valkyries. If only we could spotlight each of you!

We recently established the “SHA Louisville Alumnae” Facebook group (for ALL classes)! This private group allows alumnae of all ages to tap into the power of the Valkyrie sisterhood through digital networking. Simply review the code of conduct, request to join, and voila – hundreds of new connections are at your fingertips. Scan the QR to the right to join!

Please be sure you are receiving The Horn – our alumnae e-news –for campus events, family memorials, and more. If you’re still receiving the HeartBeat at your parent’s home, let us know if you’ve moved so that we can get mailings to you in a timely manner (i.e., Reunion invitations)! You can update your information here by scanning the QR code to the right.

Finally, please share your “All Heart” images with me as you travel, gather with your SHA sisters, and show your Valkyrie pride wherever you may roam. Images like this of my future Valkyrie daughter, Audrey, and me at the Bock Casements in Luxembourg this summer is a perfect example. We even discovered a heart-shaped rock formation while there, reminding us of what Sacred Heart means to our family. I can’t wait to see the places you show your heart!

THE LEADER IN Academics

“As the Sacred Heart Academy senior crosses the graduation stage, the bouquet of roses reminds her of serving her community, conversing in the cafeteria, and walking the hallways for the first time. In this bundle of personal memories and experiences, she examines her identity that shines through the petals. On her four-year journey, she discovered herself as a student, leader, daughter, teammate, and friend. Newly graduated, she sets off in the world, always keeping a special place for the school of her heart.”

Honoring Inspiring

On February 9, 2023, the SHA Alumnae Board hosted the 32nd annual SHA Alumnae Awards at the Mellwood Art Center. Welcoming over 300 guests to recognize our largest class of honorees, we proudly celebrated 24 men and women who have given of themselves not only to the SHA community, but throughout our local community and far beyond.

Alumna of the Year - Karen Cassidy ´74

Honorary Diploma - Father Jim Flynn

Ursuline Teaching Legacy Award - Stacy Hennessy ´76

Heart Awards - Mo McKnight Howe ´04 & Samantha Stallings ´11

Valkyrie Hall of Fame - Lindsay Boling ´06, Lindsay Gahm ´10, Coach Bob Wheatley, and the 1976 Kentucky State Basketball Champs. Led by the late, great Bunny Daugherty and Susie Peters, team members included: Laura Purdy Morrissey ´78, Laura Lombard Lyvers ´76, Missy Brown Eckman ´78, Tina Keller Poulsen ´76, Kim Brown Knopf ´77, Judy McDonald-Burkman ´77, Jessie Bollinger ´76, the late Carla Amlung ´78, Joan Esterle ´76, Lynne Johnson Steinel ´78, Leslie Johnson Fowler ´78, Donna Bender Moir ´79, Beth Stegner Peabody ´79, and managers Colleen Walker ´77, Debby Dawson-Crain ´77, Dawn Aldridge ´77 and Bridget Harris Sheehan ´77.

To say that these 24 honorees strongly represent our core values of reverence, service, leadership and community would be an understatement of great proportions. The common thread that runs through them all is a selfless nature to support the needs of others. Whether it's helping the homeless and indigent during transition from this life to eternal life, the basic human dignity and needs of refugees fleeing religious and political persecution and poverty, advocating for those suffering with rare or chronic illness, giving opportunity to the visual arts community who enrich our community in so many ways, and rallying together for the love of sport, coaching and teammates, these honorees are all heart.

Inspiring Leaders

Our Alumna of the Year for 2023, Karen Cassidy ´74, founded and runs the Hildegard House. This space was named for St. Hildegard (Hildegard of Bingen), who lived as a Benedictine nun in the 12th century, and was also a mystic, writer, composer and poet. Karen remarks on how she has been deeply inspired by Hildegard in her life. As a nurse educator and through the practice of nursing Karen witnessed throughout the years, hospital patients who were at the end of life, being discharged with nowhere to go, or no next-of-kin to care for them. She began Kentucky’s first and only comfort-care home - Hildegard House - to honor those patients she knew who had passed on (Hildegard House’s “angels”) and to give compassionate care and a dignified passing to the next life, to those in need most here in Louisville. The Hildegard House is in the former Ursuline convent for the Sisters who taught at the now-closed, St. Joseph School in Butchertown. Another beautiful example of the Ursuline influence on the lives of our alumnae and the greater Louisville community. Karen and all of our honorees this year are living examples of following one’s calling, putting others before self and displaying great humility in all that they do. There are simply not enough pages in this magazine to share the vast accomplishments and impact of these 24 individuals, so I invite you to learn more about them by watching the SHA student-created video honoring them at: www.sha.shslou.org/alumnae-awards/.

Thank you, to this wonderful group of honorees and all the SHA Alumnae Board members – especially co-chairs Judy Watson Gordon ´76 and Caroline South Schiller ´10 – who worked to make this year’s event one we will never forget.

Do you know of someone who is deserving of recognition like this year’s recipients? I encourage you to nominate a worthy alumna or member of our SHA family today. Contact Alumnae Director, Megan Brumleve Theisen ´95 at mtheisen@shslou.org or 502.736.6408 to learn more! Nominees accepted through early September 2023!

Once a Valkyrie, Forever a Valkyrie.

The first weekend in June is always a joyous time as we welcome our Valkyrie sisters back home for their reunions, and this year did not disappoint. From the beautiful Friday tailgate at SHA and salute to our Golden Grads on Saturday to class parties all over the city and ending with Mass on Sunday, these ladies showed their love and dedication for each other and Dear Sacred Heart.

It is such a blessing to share this weekend and these memories with so many distinguished, amazing, kind, and enthusiastic women. We will remember and love you, we vow, ever as now, dear Sacred Heart!

Chapel Restoration

Special thanks to Kathy Williams, Director of Communications and Public Relations, and Bernie Mudd, Communications Assistant for the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, for this guest feature on the Chapel restoration.

In November 2022, restoration began on the interior of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in the Ursuline Motherhouse. Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting, owned by Sacred Heart Academy alumna Amy Montgomery Bergeron ´94, was contracted to handle the much–needed restoration. The project includes repairs in the main parts of the chapel, including the sanctuary. The Whitehouse team has used caution to protect themselves, as well as the delicate details of the 100+-year-old interior.

Scaffolding and hard hats have replaced pews, hymnals, and songs to make way for workers to remove chipping paint and patch spots for precision painting. Upon first glance at the scaffolding, one might consider Michelangelo’s challenges while painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Painting began in mid-December at the highest point of the chapel’s dome. Workers carefully climbed the ladders and scaffolding erected to reach their paint assignment each day.

Dr. McNay, president of Sacred Heart Schools, said, “We are blessed by the generosity of those who love the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. This chapel, which is dedicated to Mary, is a true treasure. With great care and our eyes to the future, we have worked to restore the beauty of our chapel. I look forward to our Ursuline Sisters, students, and alumni celebrating many milestones in the Chapel for years to come. To be a part of this restoration has been an honor for Sacred Heart Schools and to me personally.”

Sister Jean Anne Zappa, president of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, stated, “We are not just preserving a physical structure, but a sacred space where we give praise to God; are nurtured spiritually; and we strengthen each other to build community wherever we go.”

The Ursuline Sisters of Louisville transferred ownership and stewardship of the Chapel Preservation Fund on January 27, 2022, St. Angela’s Feast Day, to ensure that the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the chapel will continue into perpetuity. Sacred Heart Schools are now the primary caretaker of the Immaculate Conception Chapel, which remains a vital, sacred center for the schools, Sisters, and Associates on the Ursuline Campus. Thank you to all the Chapel Preservation Fund donors who made this major restoration project possible.

“During my freshman year at Sacred Heart, I talked to my mother about how little SHA had compared to St. X, where my brothers had gone. She replied that women don’t give to their schools. She said many get married, and they give to the man’s school, but not their own. Of course, I thought that was terrible and vowed to give to Sacred Heart when I finished school and got a good job. It took me a while, but eventually, I became a regular donor to the Annual Fund. I decided to include Sacred Heart in my estate planning as I don’t have any children, and this seemed like a good way to give to the next generation. I am so impressed with how the school has grown in the years since I graduated! There are classes and programs in place now that I never even dreamed of when I was a student there! I value education for women and hope that my contribution will make Sacred Heart Academy accessible to more young women who want an excellent academic experience.”
