A SHADOW’S GUIDE TO LIFE AT SACRED HEART ACADEMY

BECOME Part OF THE Heart Dear Future Valkyrie,

Welcome to Sacred Heart Academy, a community that provides endless opportunities for students to grow. While last year’s circumstances prevented us from welcoming students into our buildings, the love we feel for this school community has only increased and we’re so excited you’re here! As you sit and flip through the pages of this book, attempting to make what seems like the biggest decision of your life (where you will be attending high school), I want you to understand that you are not alone. Every SHA student has been in your position, and we chose this school because it felt like home. My fellow Valkyries and I can’t wait to share our love for Sacred Heart with you! During club fair freshman year, I ran my pen dry signing up for every program SHA had to offer, from Breakfast Club to Student Council to CAC. Over the past three years, I have continued to involve myself in sports, clubs, and pretty much everything Sacred Heart would allow me to sign up for. And that’s the best part about this school—you have the freedom to become exactly the student you want to be. You have the opportunity to be a star athlete, president of your favorite club, or the lead in the fall musical. No matter what you are looking for in a high school experience, I know you will find it at SHA. I encourage you to reach out with any questions so you can start to love this school as much as we do. I’m so thankful for the decision I made, and could not imagine spending the past three years anywhere else. Come be a part of the Heart!!

With love, Izzy Atkins

Ambassadors President

“I am beyond excited you are considering Sacred Heart as your new home. The four years of high school may fly by, but the community you find here at SHA will never fade. I hope your exploration of all the extraordinary aspects of this special place I call home helps you picture how you can become a part of the heart!”

MC Zoeller ‘22 Student Council President

“I am so happy that you are considering Sacred Heart as a place where you will spend the next, and best, four years of your life! Sacred Heart is the place I discovered my true self, found my best friends, and where I have grown both as a student and as a person and I know that when you attend this amazing school, you will experience the same benefits!”

REESE QUINLAN ‘22 100 Club President

Reverence

n. A feeling of deep respect and love. v. To consider and treat with profound awe and respect. At Sacred Heart, we are family. We take care of each other. We show up for each other. We respect each other. That’s what Reverence, one of our core values, is all about. Our foundress, Saint Angela Merici said, “build community, wherever you go.” When we support each other, we build community.

WHAT DO YOU WANT A FUTURE VALKYRIE TO KNOW ABOUT SACRED HEART?

We are all in this together. Whenever I’m at SHA, I really feel like I am a part of a loving community. All of the teachers are super supportive and I have made so many lifelong friends through SHA. Lainee Mack ‘23

Everyone has a “place” – no matter who you are, you can make friends and get involved.

Everyone is welcome here. Abby Rutledge ‘23

Leland Davis ‘24

That even if you aren’t coming with any close friends from middle school, there’s nothing to be scared of. Meeting new people in high school is so fun, and Sacred Heart provides so many opportunities to meet your new classmates! Schuler Hildenbrand ‘23

service

At Sacred Heart, you’ll see that service to others is a gift. Not only is service a core value of ours, it is at the heart of all we do at SHA. We serve each other, our school, our community, and our world. Through meaningful service to those in need, we become compassionate leaders who are ready to make the world a better place.

WHERE AND WHY DO YOU VOLUNTEER? “I volunteer at Her Best Foot Forward. At SHA we talk about nurturing a community, and HBFF helps do that with women in Tanzania, globalizing our core values!”

“I volunteer at Abigail Academy as a camp counselor. I love being able to lead a small group of girls, and see them grow, have fun and learn new things.”

“I volunteer at Kids Cafe because I can really form a one on one connection with the kids that attend by tutoring and helping them with their homework.”

Isa Cristobal ‘22

Hopefully by now, you’ve heard someone talking about how Sacred Heart is an IB school. But what does that mean? IB stands for International Baccalaureate and is widely considered the best practice in education. IB teachers and classes are engaging and fun, and make learning come to life. With IB learning at SHA you’ll be challenged and empowered to think outside the box, enhance your creativity, and see the world through a lens of compassion. You’ll apply what you learn across all different subjects and to the world outside your classroom. You’ll be confident and ready to move on to college and all the future holds!

WHAT MAKES SHA’S visual arts SO SPECIAL?

program

Sacred Heart’s Visual Arts program creates a community unlike many others. Whether you’re a freshman in Survey of Visual Arts or a senior in IB Art, if you’ve been in Art for only one year or all four, you immediately gain a class of friends and compassionate peers who are willing to help you with whatever you need. You can ask your classmates for advice about your piece or learn new techniques and get inspired from their work. Much of this community is thanks to the awesome teachers, who know how to balance trust and guidance as they encourage you to explore everything the Art program has to offer. My confidence in myself and my art-making has grown over the years because of the support and love I have felt from everyone in the Art department. I find myself looking forward to Art every day. SHA’s Art program has helped my creativity flourish and allowed me to consider career paths in which I can continue using it. I am certain that the confidence and skills I have learned in the Art program will stay with me well beyond my high school experience. – Kathryn Harmon ‘22 SHA’s visual arts concentration is so special because of its community! Everyone is so close with each other and the teachers and girls are always sharing their ideas or working together to create art! – Molly Shean, 22

LOOKING BAC K What do you remember about your SHA shadow visit? “I didn’t know my shadow host before I shadowed, but she made me feel very comfortable at SHA because of how nice and welcoming she and all her friends were to me. I also remember how awesome the teachers were and how it seemed like a great environment!”

“Right when I walked in the door, I felt like I was meant to be there. Everyone was so welcoming, and went out of their way to greet me.” Audrey Heckel, Sophomore Our Lady of Lourdes

“I remember the day that I shadowed I walked in and immediately felt welcomed by everyone! Each teacher was great and I was interested in the things they were teaching! Lunch was also so fun because I got to make upperclassmen friends and the lunch was so good!” Gray Magnes, Sophomore Sacred Heart Model School

Mary Lane, Junior St. Albert the Great

What is your advice for 8th graders in choosing a school? “My advice would be to just pick the one you think is better for you, and don’t worry about where your friends are going. You have to learn to get outside of your comfort zone while learning more about yourself and growing as a person on your own rather than following the crowd.” Hannah Voss, Junior Crosby Middle School

“I had a hard time when choosing my school, but I recommend shadowing a school more than once. I think you should also just take some time to focus on where you feel the most comfortable and what you enjoy about each school you visit! “ Olivia Day, Sophomore Holy Spirit

“Hi 8th graders! My advice to you in choosing a school is to always follow your heart. Don’t make your decision based off of where your friends are going, think of where you really want to be and you will fit right in!” Hayley Brown, Sophomore St. Patrick
