BECOME Part Heart OF THE
Dear Future Valkyrie, Welcome to Sacred Heart Academy! We’re so happy that you are getting a glimpse of what it’s like to be a Valkyrie – even though we can’t yet welcome you to shadow. We know that the changes of last spring were unexpected and affected so many of you, but we are even more excited to get to know you and show you everything that Sacred Heart has to offer. You’ll find tons of ways to connect with SHA throughout this (Un)SHAdow Magazine! With so much time away from the physical building last semester, I was able to reflect on all that Sacred Heart has given its students and how I have grown since Freshman year. I realized how many friendships I have made and how much my Sacred Heart sisters mean to me. Through my years here I have been able to see how girls give it their all on the field, the stage, in the classroom, and every inch of our beautiful campus. We have this passion because we feel supported by our amazing teachers, faculty, coaches, directors, alumnae, and the entire community of Sacred Heart. Walking
through the halls of SHA you can see the smiles (even behind a mask!), hear the laughter and encouragement, and feel the love and kindness. I am so excited for you to experience our community and make that experience unique to you! I have returned as a senior with a renewed sense of what it means to be a Valkyrie, but I still remember what it was like to be in grade school and all of the excitement I felt towards starting high school. When exploring SHA, I encourage you to learn something new, branch out, ask questions, and have fun. I hope you love the SHA community and I can’t wait to see how you become a part of the heart.

“I am so happy you are considering SHA as an option for high school. It is such a special place and I hope that this magazine can provide you with some insight on why SHA is such an amazing community! I hope we can meet in person soon, and I look forward to seeing you become part of the heart!” ~Kara Adams, Student Council President
“I am so excited that you are taking the time to learn more about Sacred Heart and all of the little things that make this school such a special place! I hope that you can get a grasp of the community that Sacred Heart provides, even through your virtual event experiences. Hopefully we can meet face to face soon but for now, thanks for being a part of the Heart!” ~Anna Moorman, 100 Club President
THE LEGEND OF THEValkyrie
Did you know that from 1877 to the spring of 1959 Sacred Heart Academy had no mascot?! That year, the students held a contest to choose one. A junior field hockey player named Marion Veeneman Panyan ’60 submitted the Valkyrie, and the rest is history! For over 60 years now the Valkyrie, and the female strength she conveys, has been synonymous with SHA. According to Norse legend, a Valkyrie was an immortal and invulnerable battle maiden
– some even said that when the Valkyries rode in the night, the flicker of their armor caused the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights. Sounds like some pretty strong women. Strong women of great faith. VALKYRIES.

MS. DALY
I am a Freshmen and Sophomore Theology teacher. I graduated from SHA in 2014 and I really like teaching here! My family has been part of the Sacred Heart community since the fall of 2002 when my oldest sister became a student here, so SHA is a second home to me. I hope it will be your second home someday too!
HERE OR HOME,
VALKYRIES DON’T MISS A BEAT!
It was amazing how quickly SHA transitioned from regular school to digital learning last year. We went home on a Friday and were up and running digitally the following Wednesday. No one expected it to last the rest of the school year, but our teachers were so supportive, and SHA did so much to help all Valkyries stay connected! With COVID-19 guidelines, it was still not possible to safely bring all 820 Valkyries in the building at the same time this year. SHA came up with a great plan, called a “side-by-side hybrid” method where students could still see their friends, classmates, and teachers even if they were learning digitally! Half the school was in the building on Mondays and Tuesdays and the other half on Thursdays and Fridays.
The other days they were on Microsoft Teams (like Zoom) and could watch and listen to what was happening live in the classroom through a webcam. This really helped the girls stay connected and engaged with their teachers and friends! Wednesday was a Resource Day for everyone to use for group work, teacher or counselor meetings or additional study time – either in the building or at home. This year has taught us all to be flexible and patient for sure! By the time you’re reading this, things may have changed again. But what doesn’t change is the great education and the close-knit community that SHA offers. We know now that it doesn’t matter where we learn, because we are always a part of the heart.

THE
tech world
@ SHA Technology is everywhere, right? If last year taught us anything, it’s that our world is increasingly digital and virtual! At SHA, it’s part of everything we do, so you’ll be prepared for whatever comes next.
• Every Valkyrie has an iPad and access to all the apps, programs and books she needs
DEEPER DIVE Students who want to take the plunge into 21st century technology can choose a four-year computer science concentration and fully immerse their studies in this exploding field or choose the elective courses that best fit their interests. These include computer science essentials like programming, cybersecurity, simulation, modeling and artificial intelligence.
THE CREATIVE SIDE OF TECH There are many opportunities to show your creativity through SHA’s business and communication tech courses. Broadcasting - students create, film and produce WSHA, delivering the morning TV announcements to the student body. Yearbook - Valkyries photograph, plan and lay out the SHA yearbook that’s given each year to all students.
• All classrooms are interactive with integrated Viewsonic touchscreens and web cameras – so this year any student learning virtually has a birds’ eye view of all that is happening in the classroom
• Through apps like Notability, Teams, and Schoology students can take notes, study and connect with their teachers using their iPads
14 2020-2021 shadow MAGAZINE
igital Design and Multimedia - Students design web pages and D blogs, and film and create videos and posts for SHA’s social media highlighting events like Open House and everyday student life.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Many Valkyries feed their curiosity for technology through clubs and afterschool or TEAM activities in SHA’s Innovation Space by using the podcast studio, robotics equipment, 3D printers, laser cutter, and loads of scrap material and power tools. The only limit is where their imaginations lead!
What In The World Is TEAM? At SHA, everyone has TEAM 2-3 times per week. It stands for Teaching, Enrichment, Assemblies, and Make-up. Most school-wide liturgies, assemblies, pep rallies and speakers occur during TEAM. If there isn’t anything scheduled, each Valkyrie decides how she wants to use her own TEAM time.

Sometimes, the little things in life can add up to become a BIG thing. The same is true at SHA. Sure, you’ll get a great education, broaden your interests, and make friends for life. Those are BIG things. But if you ask our students, these ‘little things’ (hint: our teachers) are some of what makes each day at SHA so special.
supportive science “Ms. Strong gives us brain breaks, and we talk self-worth and confidence or about science in the world.” “Ms. Schrage has a meltdown corner in her room where you can go if you feel overwhelmed and she organizes a Zoom call the night before a test to answer questions. She also made us each Christmas ornaments with Scrabble letters that spelled our names.”
“At each pep rally we hav e cheer-offs against the other grades, building communit y with the SHA sisters in our class.”
“Mr. McGeeney puts pictures of puppies on the board during physics tests to calm us down.”
“When a team makes it to State Finals, we line the hal ls and clap as they run throu gh the building – then when they WIN, we have a big party in the gym!”
“On Valentine’s Day, Mrs. Mitchell asked us to write uplifting messages to each other - it connected the class and made each one of us feel special.”
sweet treats “Between Ms. Means, Mr. Heuser, Mrs. Hudson, Mrs. Towsley and the Counseling Department, every Valkyrie can find a mint, a chocolate and extra school supplies – and they always come with a smile!” “One of my favorite things is getting a paper clip from Mrs. Clemons for answering a question correctly! She has helped me so much with all the little things she does!” “Mrs. Caruso gives us a bead to put on our lanyard for every unit or project we complete. It’s simple, but a great reminder of all our accomplishments.” “Mr. Harrod gives us bonus points if we can answer a pop culture question and Mr. Garcia hands out stickers every Friday.”
sisterhood “A “little thing” I love about SHA is the morning prayer: the student says, “Sacred Heart of Jesus,” and the rest of the school follows with, “I place my trust in you.” This little thing wasn’t a big deal to me until online school started. Mrs. Ferch emailed us a video every morning and the person saying the prayer still said, “Sacred Heart of Jesus,” and I always responded with, “I place my trust in you,” even though I wasn’t in school. This made me feel like I was still at SHA and still together with everyone.”

What is your advice for 8th graders in choosing a school? “My advice would be to just pick the one you think is better for you, and don’t worry about where your friends are going. You have to learn to get outside of your comfort zone while learning more about yourself and growing as a person on your own rather than following the crowd.”
