Part Heart OF THE
Dear Future Valkyrie, Welcome to Sacred Heart Academy, we’re so glad you’re shadowing today! I know choosing a high school is a big decision...my advice to you is to talk with your parents and find the best fit for you. I was pretty shy in middle school, especially when I shadowed, but I fell in love with all the opportunities SHA has to offer and the hands-on learning environment. Now as a senior, I am so thankful for all the different aspects of SHA that have helped me become a more well-rounded person. Before, I was strictly an ‘athlete,’ but now I am involved in sports, art, leadership, and academic extracurricular activities. I even got to travel to Ireland and the United Kingdom this summer with SHA. I encourage you to branch out and pursue all your interests in high school - that’s how I met some of my best friends! I hope you feel a part of the heart today and love the Sacred Heart community as much as I do! I think you’ll see, whatever you’re looking for, it’s all here at SHA! With Megan Osting, ‘20

SHA runs on a four-block schedule each day, alternating between White Days (blocks A, B, C, D) and Blue Days (blocks E, F, G, H). Each block is about 90-minutes long. On blue days you’ll have a TEAM period (study hall) which is basically a time to meet with teachers or counselors, work on group projects, study with friends, go to the library, or quietly study in your classroom.

Typical Day: short or long sleeve SHA polo shirt (with a sweater, if it’s chilly), a navy skirt and any running shoes
Dress Day: for most all-school Masses and assemblies, you’ll swap the ankle socks for knee socks or tights and ditch the running shoes. You’ll also need your sweater!

SERVE.
“The opportunity to grow close to the children from WV was a truly fulfilling experience and allowed me to see the creative and unique side of every child. I’ve never had so much fun participating in service, and I look forward to planning and running Camp with Heart in the future!” - Isabelle Atkins, ‘22
TRAVEL.
“The two-day spring break mission trip in the Portland neighborhood showed me a part of Louisville that I wasn’t familiar with and allowed me to truly impact one family’s journey. There is a longer mission trip to Appalachia in the summer that is also a great way to make new friends and make a difference.” – Helene Senn, ‘20
Whether you are delivering Christmas gifts to children in Appalachia or refugees in Louisville; improving houses downtown, in West Virginia or overseas; or treating kids to an overnight summer camp at SHA, there are so many ways you can help those in need.
Whether you’re serving others with Hand in Hand Ministries in Appalachia or Belize or broadening your understanding of different cultures and traditions traveling to Australia, Ireland or Croatia, you’ll leave SHA ready to change the world.
RETREAT.
Ask any Valkyrie, and she’ll tell you that SHA’s four-year retreat program is one that will help you grow closer to your friends and classmates, open your eyes to the world outside our walls, and deepen your connection to your faith. It ends with a four-day, threenight off-campus senior retreat that is truly life changing – one that will empower you to be a force for positive change in our world!
“We got involved with the Appalachia gift drive because we were looking for something beyond basketball to belong to at SHA. We really learned a lot about the need in our region, and wish we would have gotten involved with CAC sooner!” - Erin Toller and Destinee Marshall, ‘20

The SHA counseling department is home to seven counselors (6 human, 1 canine). SHA is unique because you’ll be assigned to a counselor as a freshman and stay with that same counselor all four years. This allows you to strengthen your relationship with your counselor throughout your years at SHA and allows our counselors to really get to know your personality, strengths and needs. We also have two college counselors who you’ll work with junior and senior year to help you through every part of the college admissions process. The Counseling Office is a warm and welcoming
place where our counselors help students navigate their high school years and prepare for their futures.
Puppy Love Mac
is our school therapy dog and he is always hanging out in the counseling office. Mac is a great counselor – if you are feeling stressed, sad or overwhelmed, or you just need a break, you can visit the counseling office and take some time to relax with Mac. The counseling office also offers Mindful Walks with Mac during TEAM, where you can take a break from school and enjoy the beautiful campus. Mac is awesome at his job and makes everything at SHA that much sweeter!
