The Field of Special Education
Talented teachers are needed to solve problems faced by individuals with unique challenges in life. If you enjoy working hard to give all children a chance to realize their potential, consider the educational opportunities offered in the special education program at Augusta State University.
Programs in Special Education
BSEd – Leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with certification in Special Education (general curriculum*). MEd – Leads to a Master of Education in Special Education degree (general curriculum or adapted curriculum*) for individuals previously certified in any field of teaching. MAT - Leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Special Education (general curriculum or adapted curriculum*) for individuals NOT previously certified in any field of teaching. *general curriculum = mild disabilities *adapted curriculum = severe disabilities Each program has its own admission requirements. Please check the website at www.aug.edu/forms/ coegradapp.pdf .
Field Experiences All Special Education courses contain a public school field experience requirement in addition to class time and coursework. Students not employed by a school district must undergo a background check and purchase liability insurance through a student group prior to field experience placement. Students with degrees from fields unrelated to education may apply for the MAT program in Special Education after completing the GACE I (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators) and meeting the College of Education criteria for admission to graduate study. Lab time may be scheduled around full-time employment in a different field.
Undergraduate Application Process
Students may become “an education major” at the time of application to the university or at any point thereafter by selecting one of the teacher preparation programs offered in the college. Admission to teacher education, however, is a separate function and requires that the student meet all college, department, and program criteria. The following minimum admission criteria apply to all students seeking admission to Teacher Education. In some fields of study, additional requirements may apply. Students should check with the appropriate department to determine these special requirements. • Students must earn an overall GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale) on all attempted hours in the system core curriculum in areas A-F, as required for teacher preparation. • A grade of “C” or better in all classes used for the Teacher Preparation Program. • Successful performance on all portions of the Regents Examination. • Successful performance on the GACE basic skills test. • A record free of criminal, disciplinary, and psychological problems. • Verification of physical health appropriate to the requirements of a classroom teacher.
Admission to Teacher Education is a prerequisite for all upper division level professional education courses. Students must be admitted to Teacher Education in order to enroll in these courses. The grade point average for admission to Teacher Education is calculated using all course work in the education preparation program attempted by the student. Application for undergraduate admission is made directly to the Office of Admissions in the College of Education.
Graduate Application Process

Students desiring to change their program are required to file a written request with the coordinator of Graduate Studies in the Office of the Dean of the College of Education.
