The Locker Room was designed for the Cincinnati Bengals, an NFL team. The primary objective was to overhaul the existing team locker room, and to carry the brand forward in a subtle, refined, but energetic way.

The existing plan has curved walls, evoking the prolated spheroid shape of the football. As a formal respnse, the new ceiling mimics this motif as a layered series of footballs, each stretching successively shorter as it moves up. The final ceiling layer reveals a pyramidal ceiling form, intended to reflect light in a strong and dynamic way. The ceiling planes are lit by programmable RGBW covelights, which can create “hype mode” on game days.

PROJECT RENDERINGS. Image making was a crucial aspect to this project to meet the energetic nature of the client.

The Hatch House was an interior renovation project limited to the second floor of a historic home. The program was simple: to convert a defunct one bedroom apartment into a primary en-suite bedroom, including a study, and a guest en-suite.

The design was driven by a desire to distinguish the old from the new. The perimeter historic walls were conceived of as a container and painted out in white. Juxtaposed, a contemporary black millwork insertion lies within the center of the plan. This element was conceived of as a “machine for living” and houses closets, a bathroom, and building utilities. Portals–articulated with wood–carve through the insertion, and mark the entry threshold to each bedroom.

A major design feature was the bathrooms. The primary bathroom has a hidden door within the contemporary insertion, and as such wanted to be totally foreign to the historic container.

When the door is discovered and opened, the user is drawn in by a smoked glass sconce. A singular curving wall gesture, formed by a blackened tadelakt plaster, is gently washed by warm indirect lighting, giving the impression that the wall extends up into infinity. In contrast, since the guest bathroom was within the historic container, the decision was to use white fixtures and white walls. The same tile was used in both bathrooms, to provide a point of reference.

The existing conditions were derelict, so the entire space was gutted, the walls straightened, and the floors and ceiling leveled. As an unforeseen issue, the floor leveling caused the bedroom floors to rise from the hallway, but in dissimilar heights from each other. Instead of mismatched thresholds, this became a design opportunity to create a landing platform in the guest room entry, which allowed both thresholds to align.

The Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame celebrates the profound impact on music, history, and culture of its African-American community. This public park brings together people of all ages and cultures to dance, sing, and learn about local black musicians who have changed this city and the world with their music. Annual induction ceremonies will unite the community in honoring groundbreaking musical legends.

Spanning all musical genres, the Walk consists of accessible ramps and landings that traverse the 14 foot grade change from sidewalk level to the entrance of the adjacent Brady Music Center and Smale Park Event Lawn. The design is a response to contextual site conditions. A radial grid overlay mediates the angle of Mehring Way and the Brady, forming the geometrical structure of the Walk. Elements are deployed to support the program, with dynamic morphologies influenced by the adjacent architecture.

The integration of nature with the black granite hardscape enriches the experience. The landscape evokes a native meadow through a carefully crafted plant community. Ornamental grasses provide a structural framework, while flowering perennials and bulbs create vibrant pops of color that add rhythm and syncopation and multi-seasonal interest. The groundcovers unify, connecting the elements and creating a harmonious understory layer.

At twilight, a light show turns the site into a symphony of colors and interactive experiences, set to a soulful soundtrack. Features include Augmented Reality, an Interactive Drum tied to adjacent fountain lighting, Dance Floor Monitors, Video Screens, and 13 Kiosks to listen to and learn about the artists.

The project required intense collaboration among the architects, landscape architects, interactive experience designers, MEP/AV consultants, and contractors, especially given the mere 23-month schedule, a site within the Ohio River floodplain, sophisticated AV/ electronics, and building the north half atop a garage structure.

The new home for the Early Childhood program at Cincinnati Country Day Schools provides a welcoming, fun, and inspiring environment, to house such a critical aspect of the campus experience.

The architecture is nestled within the landscape and adjacent to the newly emerging nature playscape, with views from the classrooms to the woods beyond. The design seeks to reinforce the connection to nature that has been a core value of the distinctive program, while facilitating improved learning and safety for the newest members of the campus.

The design is informed by spatial equity, light, views, and play. The classrooms are equally distributed radially around the central gathering space and the “Ribbon Wall” weaves the spaces together to create a playful interaction between interior and exterior.
