Water Water Flow Monitoring Select the Technology Best Suited for Your Application Models
Continuous-Wave Doppler Suitable for accurate open-channel flow measurement without a weir or flume, pre-treatment compliance, stormwater runoff monitoring, sewer flow monitoring, river & stream gauging. AV sensors continuously transmit an ultrasonic signal within the flow stream - these signals are reflected off bubbles & particles & return to the detector where frequency shift is measured to derive an average velocity. When combined with a differential pressure transducer, the sensor measures liquid depth to determine the flow area - with flow rate calculated by multiplying the area of the flow stream by its average velocity.
Signature Flow Meter (refer page 18) 2150 Area Velocity Flow Meter (refer page 18)
Pulse Doppler Velocity Profiling Suitable for wastewater collection systems, irrigation canals, industrial process and discharges, stormwater conveyance & outfalls. Acoustic signals are transmitted into the flow stream and reflect back after contacting bubbles or particles. By measuring the difference in frequency between the emitted & returned signals (known as Doppler shift), velocities of particles in the flow stream are accurately determined. By ‘range gating’ the returned signals, velocity is measured in multiple, distinct cells (called velocity bins). Detailed velocity data in relation to sensor location is used to calculate an accurate flow profile.
accQpulse Velocity Profiler (refer page 19)
Non-Contact Ultrasonic Suitable for CSO, SSO, I&I, cMOM, SSEs, sewer flow monitoring, open-channel flow measurement, non-contact flow measurement in streams containing harsh chemicals, grease, or suspended solids. The sensor is mounted above the flow stream which transmits sound pulses being reflected off the liquid surface. The elapsed time between transmitted & returned signals determines liquid level. Flow rate is then calculated using one of the meter’s built-in flow conversions or a user-defined level-to-flow relationship.
Signature Flow Meter (refer page 18) 2110 Ultrasonic Flow Meter (refer page 19)
Bubbler Suitable in flow streams affected by harsh weather, debris or corrosive chemicals. Bubbler technology forces compressed air from a submerged tube. The depth of flow is determined by measuring the pressure needed to force the bubbles out of the line with the information then converted into the flow rate using known parameters.
Signature Flow Meter (refer page 18)
Submerged Probe Suitable for sites where wind, steam, foam or turbulence exist. A probe mounted at the bottom of the channel measures the pressure of the liquid above to determine flow stream depth. The level reading is then converted to flow rate using known parameters.
Signature Flow Meter (refer page 18)
Non-Contact Velocity Sensor Suitable for measuring high-solid content of wastewater/stormwater, etc. The sensor remotely measures flow in open channels with non-contact laser doppler velocity technology & non-contact ultrasonic level technology. The sensor measures velocity with a laser beam at single or multiple points below the water surface. A non-contact ultrasonic transmitter measures the liquid head height to determine the wetted area. Multiplying the wetted area by the average velocity yields the flow rate. Flow during surcharge conditions can be measured with an optional, integrally-mounted continuous-wave doppler area velocity sensor.

Designed to measure metabolic rate in aquatic animals, both vertebrates & invertebrates - ideal for both lab & field studies (with optional battery pack) The fish is placed in a respirometry chamber & the decrease in dissolved O2 due to consumption is used to measure metabolic rate Values of oxygen consumption rate (VO2) are calculated, displayed & saved in software Measurements are made sequentially without removing the fish from the chamber, with the chamber being flushed with fresh water between measurements These intermittent flow measurements overcome disadvantages of continuous closed respirometry in which dissolved O2 level in the chamber may decrease to a hypoxic level

PRESSURISED LINE WATER SAMPLING SOLUTIONS ▀▀
Background: All water samplers (irrespective of brand or model), generally have a vertical lift or a head capacity of around 7 to 8 metres. Generally before each sample is pumped or collected, water samplers purge the suction line (ie run the pump in reverse) to prevent cross contamination & to ensure only ‘fresh’ water is sampled.
▀▀
Problem: At some locations the water being sampled is under pressure either through pumps or through high head caused by the discharge from the top of tanks or stand pipes. The problem with pumped streams is that the pressure is not constant - it continually cavitates & sometimes pressure spikes occur that are much higher than the average pressure. As a rule of thumb, a water sampler can only operate (ie purge & pump) against a constant pressure or head of approximately half of one atmosphere (ie 7 psi, 3.5 metres head, 0.5 Bar etc).
▀▀
Solutions: In these situations, some precautions are necessary to ensure correct operation of the sampler or an alternative sampling point is necessary – refer below diagrams.
Sampling from a pressurised pipe using a pressure reducing valve Pressure reducing valve Sampling point in tank or in separate overflow tank Pressured pipe flow Sampling tank enables purge before & after each sample
