Much Ado About

About Something

All Queer Shakespeare puts the spotlight on Love with Valentine’s Day cabaret

All the world’s a stage,” William Shakespeare said. And now we have a theatre company who brings the spirit of the Elizabethan playwright’s to the local stage. But with a twist: every production is a little bit queer. A lot queer, really.

Founder and artistic director Monica Sampson, who identifies as bisexual, serves up modern day magic by bringing a selection of Shakespeare’s (and Shakespeare inspired) masterpieces into the limelight with All Queer Shakespeare theatre company.

In 2018 Monica trained and perform with the Globe Theatre in jollye olde England where she starred in Hamlet as the melancholy Dane. It created a natural fit for her when she formed All Queer Shakespeare. “We are a company focused on performing queer stories, so why not go directly to the source with Shakespeare’s plays?” she said. After all, the Bard of Avon didn’t just write about kings, queens, nobles, and starcrossed lovers; he wrote about skinkers, costermongers, ostlers, bearherds – you know, ordinary folk– the hipsters of the Elizabethan Age. Some scholars speculate that playboy-playwright Billy Boy may have been bisexual himself.

“At All Queer Shakespeare we blend traditional storytelling with contemporary perspectives, bringing Shakespeare’s timeless work to life in vibrant and inclusive ways; we’re here to support and uplift your unique voice.” she said. “Shakespeare’s work is intrinsically queer. Our stories focus on folks from all walks of life, and all orientations,” Monica explained about the troupe’s philosophy. “Traditional narratives don’t have to be stuffy or boring. Queer folks have always been a part of history; All Queer Shakespeare just illuminates those works.”

The thespians are rehearsing for “LOVE IS LOVE Valentine’s Day Cabaret” to celebrate the holiday for sweethearts. Audiences can expect an new old fashioned, romantic, variety show re-examined through a queer lens featuring singers, dancers, puppets, and surprises at every corner with a cast of queer artists exploring your favorite love songs and stories with a uniquely gay, lesbian, and non-binary main character energy. “Love exists simultaneously as an act of defiance as well as an expression of Love,” is Monica’s philosophy.

No stranger to stages across the Valley, the talented and disarmingly charming Seth Tucker is collaborating with Sampson and AQS for the first time in the upcoming production.

“My passion is cabaret: I never get a chance to do things like this I am sponsoring the performance with my husband and real estate partner, Šima Košta,” Seth said. “We wanted to give back to the LGBTQ+ community by supporting, devising, and performing in this celebration of love with All Queer Shakespeare. I’m co-directing and devising the show from the ground up with Monica: creating the set list, choosing the Shakespearean scenes, casting the ensemble, and putting it all together.”

Being part of AQS satisfies a theatrical craving for Seth. “I’ve been starving for gay theatre. The majority of characters being portrayed on stages in the Valley are straight. Most mainstream theatre that does include a queer puts focus on the trauma of ‘the gay experience.’ It’s refreshing as a performer to be able to tell stories that emotionally resonate with me as a gay man.”

Seth also observed, “AQS provides the community with a place to embrace queer love by including gender swapping roles, duets, and Shakespearean tropes in order to see a reflection of our community on stage. Nearly every single person on and off stage is part of the LGBTQ+ community, which is exciting and inspiring.”

Expect something different and thought provoking at an AQS performance.

“Audiences can expect to leave our shows experiencing queer joy, seeing actors portraying roles that reflect the real experiences of their own lives,” Monica shared. “All Queer Shakespeare centers diversity and inclusion in our leadership – behind the scenes and on stage. You are welcome here. Our theater isn’t just a performance space, but a community space; folks who experience All Queer Shakespeare enter

All Queer Shakespeare has room for every member of the audience and every queer performer from every walk of life. Pantaloons and tunics, courtesans and eunuchs. Old situations, new complications. Something erratic, something dramatic. Nothing that’s formal and nothing that’s normal. There’s something for everyone. You could say All Queer Shakespeare is exactly – to quote old Willie S. himself – “As You Like It.” And you’ll like it.

The Love Is Love Queer Cabaret is in partnership with local queer organizations and this cabaret will include a youth production. Friday, February 14 with shows at 7 p.m. & 9 p.m.

All Queer Shakespeare treads the boards at Scottsdale Neighborhood Arts Place. 4425 N. Granite Reef Rd. just north of Camelback Rd. in Scottsdale. For more information visit AllQueerShakespeare.com email: info@AllQueerShakespeare.com Follow them on Facebook and Instagram
