Nearly Naked Theatre Presents

Photos by Laura Durant 28 www.IONAZ.com January 2012

Four Catholic school boys. One very dangerous book! This is not your grandfather’s Shakespeare. Nearly Naked Theatre presents the return of one of their most treasured productions: Shakespeare’s R&J by Joe Calarco. Four young men play students at an all-boy Catholic boarding school, who meet in secret to read from a banned copy of Romeo & Juliet. Eventually the boys begin to ‘act out’ the play in an attempt to fully understand its message and power. The four of them play all 22 roles, in their school uniforms but without traditional costumes and no props, except the play Romeo & Juliet, and a long piece of ‘sacred’ red fabric that they had wrapped the book in to hide it. This fabric becomes “Everything” from torches to swords to blood, to poison, to even the balcony. Two of the students eventually emerge as Romeo & Juliet, and the journey the four of them take opens their eyes to a world they had never truly understood through the dominating oppression of their upbringing, schooling and religion. Through the words of Shakespeare and the ‘greatest love story in the English language,’ these students come to know themselves and how they truly feel about religion, conformity, gender

January 2012 www.IONAZ.com 29

roles, individuality, homophobia, and, of course, the true and universal nature of Love. This powerful and beautiful show depicts four young men learning the true messages of Romeo & Juliet for the first time. Although homoeroticism and homocentricism exist in a production where two boys are playing Romeo & Juliet, this is not a “Gay play.” Starring Corey Ginsberg, Skyler Bean, B. Connor Verhoeven and Brandon Wiley, Shakespeare’s R&J features brief nudity and is recommended for adults and mature teens (with their parents) who wish to experience a truly remarkable and enlightening piece of theatre directed by the award winning Damon Dering. Forget what you think you know… this is not your grandfather’s Shakespeare.

Shakespeare’s R&J Runs January 5 - 21 Thursday-Saturday at 7 p.m. Sun: 6 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. alternating The Little Theatre at Phoenix Theatre -100 E. McDowell Rd. For tickets and information visit

Yo, DJ! What’s New?

H

appy New Year! Check out new material from Celtic Woman, Tim McGraw, Ani Difranco, Nightwish, Safetysuit, James Blunt and the new Grammy compilation as well as…

Snow Patrol

Fallen Empires Appropriately titled, Snow Patrol fall from their once innovative perch with their latest offering. In a big departure, Fallen Empires adds a misplaced electronic vibe that never melds with the harmonies or vocals. Also lacking is a musical cohesion, a “hook” and a catchy feel to keep your toes tapping and your ears wanting more. “New York” is perhaps this sets standout track with its haunting, yet uplifting sound, while lead single, “Called out in the Dark,” provides a fun, almost disco light. “Slow” also bestows a solemn sound we’ve come to love, but just never fully captivates like “Eyes Open” did. GRADE: C

Seal

Soul 2 After mediocre success with Soul V1, Seal turns to 70’s Motown for V2. Though this is still “damage control” from System (which still is one of his best albums), and Commitment, Seal is most definitely too young to be doing these types of concept albums. This is something Seal should have saved for his sixties, added collaborations with younger artists to produce a #1 album. However, this album resonates well from start to finish. Classics like “Let’s Stay Together,” “What’s Goin’ On” and “I’ll be

Around” prove to be the best re-interpreted yet solidly safe covers that really shine. Oh how Seal’s voice just croons me into submission. GRADE: B

Soundtrack/ Score

W./E. A first a review of a score from a movie. But not just any movie— Madonna’s new film out right before her Super Bowl stint (what timing, eh?) All this to be followed by the release of her new album the following Tuesday. All marketing aside however, this score by Abel Korzeniowski is just plain beautiful. The music transcends far beyond a score and is emotionally moving while truly showcasing a dramatic and haunting flare. With its string movements, accompanied by piano driven melodies in an almost Phillip Glass like way, this score stands on its own. Check out “Umbrella,” “Six Hours,” “Charm” and “Drive to Belvedere.” GRADE: AIn tradition, my top singles of 2011: #1 – Adele – Rolling in the Deep #2 – Above & Beyond – Love is not Enough #3 – David Guetta/Sia – Titanium #4 – Beastie Boys –

Make Some Noise #5 – Mat Kearney – Runaway #6 – Cee Lo Green – I Want You (Hold on to Love) #7 – Coldplay – Paradise #8 – Lady Gaga – Edge of Glory #9 – Rihanna – We Found Love #10 – Yolanda – We Speak No Americano

A Conversation with Casper Andreas about Going Down in LA LA Land

Getting (a)Head

in Hollywood by Deon Brown 36

www.IONAZ.com January 2012

T

Adam, a struggling actor in LA, and since I lived the life of a struggling actor in LA I certainly could relate. Adam gets into selling his body, both on and off-camera. I also thought it was a very interesting story because of the crazy, celebrity-obsessed culture we live in where so many people will do anything to gain notoriety and fame.

Young, handsome and filled with ambition, Adam (Matthew Ludwinski) arrives in L.A. with dreams of making it big, moving in with his zany best friend Candy (Allison Lane). Adam’s notso-fabulous career gets off to a rocky start. Soon he finds himself dealing with down-and-out-directors, washed up starlets and meth addicts, as he starts to lose himself in the seamy underworld of Gay porn and prostitution.

ION: You act and direct. Which side of the camera do you prefer to be on?

hey say that beneath all the phony tinsel of Hollywood, you’ll find the real tinsel underneath. Take a candid, sexy and outrageously funny look at what an actor can—and will—do to survive. Get ready, because your good boy’s gonna go bad.

Adapted from Andy Zeffer’s book, Going Down in LA LA Land, director/ actor/screenwriter Casper Andreas (Violet Tendencies, A Four Letter Word) explores the nitty-gritty side to life in the Entertainment Capital of the World, Hollywood, USA, and Adam learns that all is not gold that glitters in Tinsel Town. ION talked to Andreas about Going Down in LA LA Land, its challenges and rewards. ION: What inspired you to make Andy Zeffer’s book into a film? Casper Andreas: The novel is about

CA: It’s hard to say. I like both equally. What I generally love the most about directing is working with the actors and getting the performances I want. As an independent filmmaker I really like the ability to call the shots on my career. I’m able to create my own projects, make the decision about what I’m working on, and how, when and where things will be done. But the actual job of acting I love! Researching and exploring the character, figuring out what makes him tick, and working on bringing that out in my performance—so much fun! ION: What’s your favorite part about this film? CA: I really like the ending; it’s different from the novel. I felt the new one that I came up with worked better for the film. I love to sit in the audience and get their reaction to the ending. It’s just very satisfying to have the audience rooting for my two lead characters, Adam and January 2012 www.IONAZ.com 37

his roommate Candy, in the end, despite all their faults and shortcomings. ION: Bright Lights! Big City! How accurate is the movie about a good boy lost in the trappings of Tinsel Town? CA: I think it’s very accurate. Sure, we make light and fun of certain situations in the film but I think a lot of young, hot guys arriving to Los Angeles are confronted with situations where they have to chose exactly what they are willing to do to get ahead. Everyone with dreams of making it big is easy prey for someone who says they can help them get there. ION: Any special challenges you faced with this film? CA: My previous films were all shot in New York so shooting in LA was a bit of a challenge since it was all new to me. LA is not a very friendly town for indie filmmaking. Permits, parking, etc., cost a lot of money—something New York gives us for free—and with a lot of rainy days during our 19 days of shooting it was a challenge to keep our schedule and budget. ION: It’s a “dramedy.” How much drama & how much comedy? 38

www.IONAZ.com January 2012

CA: There’s a lot of both and it’s all mixed up with each other. It was important for me to keep the film based in reality, both, in the drama and the comedy. I had some wonderful, funny actors in cast—like Bruce Vilanch, Alec Mapa, and Allison Lane. Sometimes I had to ask them to take it down a notch. In editing I couldn’t always use their funniest takes since it had to fit the tone of the film. It was an interesting problem to have. ION: Tell us the truth: Drugs. Porn. The sex. The casting couch. Prostitution. Is this what Hollywood really is all about? CA: That’s certainly one side of Hollywood. Of course there’s also another side: that sunny, glossy place that turns people’s dreams into reality. Having lived in Los Angeles I always used to say that it’s a wonderful place to live—as long as you are not in the entertainment industry. Most people who live there are struggling to make it and a lot of people who end up compromising themselves and doing things they never in a million years would dream about doing. ION: Is there a lesson to be learned from LA-LA Land? CA: Yes, of course! There are lessons to be learned from all my films--that’s actually very important to me. I make entertainment but I would hate to make mindless entertainment. Going Down In LA-LA Land is about friendships,

January 2012 www.IONAZ.com 39

love, going after your dreams, and in the end, making decisions about what’s most important in life: is it love and connection, or is it fame and success? I think those are themes most people can relate to on some level even if they never pursued a career in entertainment. Half-Share The Pines of Fire Island. Summertime Gay Mecca of the East Coast. It’s no place for sissies. Well ... it’s just a figure of speech. Newly single and starting over at 36-years-old, Mac spends a summer on the Island of Misfit Boys with his posse of six Nancy Boys including an aging chorus boy, a co-dependent couple, a Gaysian “antique” collector, a Republican lawyer by day/drag diva by night, all on a quest for the Endless Summer and the Biggest ... well, see the picture. “If they’re too small, by law I have to throw them back.” Starring the incomparable Jesse Archer (Slutty Summer, A Four Letter Word), Alex Mapa (Ugly Betty, Connie and Carla, Marley & Me), Jack Plotnick (Girls Will Be Girls, Ellen, Drawn Together) and a cast too fabulous to list. Cross-dressing & Double-crossing Albert Nobbs Starring: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Janet McTeer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers Based on a short story by George Moore, Albert Nobbs stars Glenn Close, as a woman who passes as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. After thirty years of donning men’s clothing, the arrival of a new love threatens to reveal her charade and destroy everything she’s worked towards. In a bit of cruel irony, she finds herself as imprisoned as she would have been had she never disguised herself to begin with. Close, who first played the title role in a stage adaptation in 1982, spent the past 15-years trying to bring this powerful story to the screen. Directed by Rodrigo Garcia (director of Passengers and son of author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez), Albert Nobbs features an incredible, talented cast, including Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids are Alright), Aaron Johnson (Kickass), Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds), and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Velvet Goldmine, Match Point). Release Date: 01/27/2012.

One for the Money Starring: Katherine Heigl, Jason O’Mara, Sherri Shepherd, Daniel Sunjata Adapted from Janet Evanovich’s best-selling mystery series, One for the Money is about Stephanie Plum, a typical Jersey girl, whose sudden spate of bad luck prompts her to swallow her pride and ask for a job from her cousin at his bail bond company as a recovery agent. Despite being utterly green and illequipped, she takes on her cousin’s biggest bail-jumper— former vice cop and murder suspect, Joe Morelli … the same Joe Morelli who dumped her in high school. As she gets a crash course in what it means to be a recovery agent, she starts to realize that nabbing Morelli isn’t as easy—and maybe not as right—as she once thought it was. A quirky, clever storyline with a potential to play out like Erin Brokovich (i.e., beauty queen turned ball-busting dogooder), Out for the Money is spoiled by the casting of one trick pony, Heigl, whose on screen one-dimensionality is overshadowed by her off-screen habit of biting the hand that feeds by badmouthing her bosses. On a positive note, a forced screening might be a good punishment for anyone who skips out on their bail. That’ll teach ‘em for trying to evade the long arm of the law. Steers & Queers As a film reviewer, I don’t get much of a say in what I watch. Sometimes this can be bad. Sometimes a movie is so truly awful, it makes me rethink my views on censorship, but I still have to finish watching it and try to convey my displeasure in a semi-coherent half-page write-up. However, this can be good. I have watched some truly great films that, left to my own devices at a comprehensive video store, I would normally have overlooked. So for those of you who wrote, “Take more chances” on their list of New Year’s resolutions, I say: go for it. You won’t (usually) regret it!

Kickoff (2011) Starring: Ian Sharp, Duncan MacInnes, Jason Maza, Michael Lindall, Rikki Beadle-Blair Do not judge Kickoff by its seemingly misleading tagline (“There’s more than one way to score”) and remember that Rikki Beadle-Blair’s film started as a stage play. Knowing this will save you a lot of confusion, because there is a remarkable lack of sex (90% of the film takes place over the course of a soccer match) and a shocking abundance of meaningful dialogue (despite the fact that 90% of the film takes place over the course of a soccer match.) Kickoff is the story of an all-gay British soccer team organized by Archer (Sharp), a former footballer and ex-soldier who disappeared some years earlier because his sexuality didn’t square with the hetero-normal culture of professional soccer and the military. Despite wanting to provide fellow soccerplaying poofs with a venue, he tells them to keep their sexuality under wraps on the field. Yet when they have to go toe-to-toe with a team notorious for their ruthless methods, they realize the only way to truly win is to be themselves. While there are times where the story threatens to go off the rails (as I mentioned, very little soccer is actually played

in their hour-long soccer match, as multiple sidebars, dramatic explosions and cometo-Jesus meetings interrupt actual play), Beadle-Blair’s Max, the gay foster father to one of Platoon F.C.’s players, manages to anchor it as the teddy bear hoodie-wearing voice of reason. Aroo! Aroo! Aroo! Available: January 17, WolfeVideo.com

Longhorns

Starring: Jacob Newton, Derek Villanueva, Kevin Held, Stephen Matzke Set at the University of Texas in 1982, Longhorns is the story of “Straight” frat boy, Kevin (Newton), whose sexuality comes into question when he meets—and falls for—openly gay Cesar (Villanueva). Before this, Kevin saw nothing atypical about giving a frat brother a western grip hand-job when viewing a Debbie Does Dallas-esque porn, or inviting Cesar to pose nude for a Titanicstyle sketch session. Rather than take the Longhorn bull by the horns, Kevin cuts bait and runs—agreeing to spend an alcohol-fueled weekend with chums who promise him he’ll be knee-deep in poontang. A freak flood waylays the ladies and the friends are forced to make due, but when a friendly blowjob leads his hyper-macho buddy to accuse him of overstepping some previously unknown line, Kevin must confront his sexuality headon. While human sexuality is certainly more nuanced than the labels we give it would suggest, David Lewis’ film plays into the popular fantasy that heterosexual men are just one blowjob away from Gay and the only defining line between “Gay” and “Straight” sexual behavior is that Gay men kiss on the lips. While not entirely accurate, it’s nice to think that a state notorious for being vehemently Christian Conservative in a time of Reagan Republicanism would be a hotbed of hypocritical hand-jobs. Thai One On at Thai E-San

“ ne night in Bangkok and the world’s your oyster,” according to one song. But if you want the best of everything, you need to head over to northeast Thailand, the E-San region. Many of these dishes are traditional and date from 1794 and are influenced by cooking from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Can’t get there in time for lunch or dinner? Head over to Thai E-San, the popular restaurant right here in Phoenix. Those in the know rate Thai E-San tops in authentic Thai cuisine. Heck, even New Times Weekly granted them “Best Thai Restaurant” in 2010. The gracious owner Pui Pongtraic has been in the Thai restaurant business since the 1980s and has been a big supporter of the Valley’s GLBT community and served as a food exhibitor at many a Phoenix Pride. A generous menu with a thoughtful array of six soups, a dozen different salads, a bunch of noodle dishes—including pad thai, of course—a variety of entrées, rice, and fish dishes, too. Bring your appetite, because Thai E-San is known for their generous portions. A star appetizer is the Angel Wings. This secret recipe is, well, “heavenly,” created out of boneless chicken wings and stuffed with seasoned ground pork, cellophane noodles and vegetables. This speciality is only $8.75 for two giant wings. Few Thai restaurants will undertake this complex dish.

fresh Thai herbs. Another winner is the #6: Spicy Green Beans with Prik-Khing Curry and herbs. The #9 features stir-fried fresh ginger with onion, mushrooms, pepper and celery is a stand-out. Each dish can be had with beef, pork, chicken, vegetables, tofu, for $6.49. A few dollars more will get you combinations of meats or seafood. Thai food is known for its kick with carefully chosen spices and can really make you sweat. You might want to play it safe and order your meal with a “3.” That’s enough to jumpstart your tastebuds and still enjoy the other subtle flavors. A perfect ending is their housemade coconut ice cream. Service is topnotch. If you’re lucky you’ll be served by the fabulous Rex; hopefully he’ll tell you one of his jokes. His delivery of the punchline is truly priceless. Just like the cuisine of Thai E-San. 616 W. Indian School Rd. 602-297-8888 ThaiESanAZ.com

A terrific value that’s big on taste and won’t damage your wallet are Thai E-San’s amazing lunch specials served Mon-Fri from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Each order features fried wonton, a delicious egg roll (not greasy, as so often the case) and a cup of chef’s choice soup with your choice of hot or iced tea. Our favorites? Try the #4: Pa-Naeng Curry with coconut milk, red chili and January 2012 www.IONAZ.com 47

rowing up. It’s supposed to be all about jumping rope, hopscotch, candy and the occasional Spelling Bee at school. It’s not that easy. When you throw kids who are differently abled, too fat, too skinny along with burgeoning puberty and feeling same sex urges or who have gender identity issues, things get more complicated. Then bullies get involved.

Raja

RuPaul’s Drag Race season three winner, Raja, and runner up, Manila Luzon, will be performing at the Grand Canyon Performing Arts event, “Blush & Bashful,” benefiting The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for GLBTQ youth. The duo chatted with ION in an exclusive interview about their experiences with bullying and their lives, success and love of everything bright and shiny.

and

The effervescent Karl Westerberg, 27, exploded onto the scene as the exotic Manila Luzon with rapier wit and unbridled talent. He discussed the most gratifying part about being Manila.

Manila

“The side effect of doing ‘Manila’ is the fans I’ve inspired,” Westerburg said about his ‘fanilas.’ “I never expected that I’d be an inspiration or a role model; I’m proud of that.”

by Deon Brown 50

www.IONAZ.com January 2012

He added, “I’m just your regular ol’ Gay boy living his Gay life here in New York City. You don’t expect to have the responsibilities to be

a positive person in the community. It’s kind of like being Spiderman ‘... with great powers come great responsibilities.’ I’m a drag queen! I can get away with being a total bitch and saying offensive things, but now I think twice about it. I’m involved with so many organizations like GLAAD and AIDS charities. You have to watch your mouth; that’s a small price to pay,” he laughed. Sutan Amrull, the gifted artist known as Raja reflected, “I’m in such a cool place right now. I’m that person who I always wanted to be when I grew up.” With the fame and recognition from Drag Race, their priorities changed. Manila told ION, “I quit my job as a graphic designer to pursue my drag career; I was only doing drag as a hobby before. I didn’t have any shows; I just had a guest spot here and there or to feel fab at a party. My priorities have changed from doing a 9 to 5 desk job, sitting at a computer to do other people’s work to working on Manila! I’m a reality television personality! And I didn’t go on national TV to look stupid; leave that to the other contestants, darling!” he joked. “But it’s very hard not to get sucked into the fantasy of reality TV. Especially when there’s all of those rhinestones and glitter.” Raja keeps his eye on the prize, too. “I’m more intensely focused on getting a message out there; not just being a flailing, fabulous queen. I have a platform and people are listening to me. People need to see that you can see what you need to be. Have a great time in your life and just keep pushing forward.” Manila and Raja discussed growing up, bullying and its effects. “I come from a very strong, close-knit family. I had a pretty normal childhood. I think everyone is subject to being bullied, in a way. I was a half-Asian kid growing up in Minnesota so I didn’t look like everyone. I was coming to terms with my sexuality, which

I didn’t want anyone to know about; there wasn’t anybody openly Gay in my school. But I’m me; I’m fun and I’m exciting and I always wanted to be different. I think that the darkest points in my life really did help create the person that I am today. That’s why we have organizations like the Trevor Project to remind young people that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Raja said, “I’m 37-years-old and people still try to bully me. Everyday I go onto Twitter and today the first thing I see is “I fucking hate you.” What a thing to say! And this person— anonymously—puts out that venom. What did I do that makes you want to say that? “The bullying never ends,” Raja said pragmatically. Still, he stays positive. “I’m against bullying, but at the same time I’m tired of the focus on bullying. What about the greatness that is within all individuals? Let’s focus on that! Let’s focus on the positive aspect of it and not give any more energy to people who are fucking assholes who are bullying.” Raja discussed his strategy for staying strong: “It might sound strange, but that’s how I lived my life: I ignored them. I continued on and I didn’t give it a name. I didn’t give them the energy of having the title of ‘bully’ because they did not exist to me. When you give somebody that name you’re allowing them to exist and they have that power over you. I don’t even want to use that word anymore because I’m tired of fabulous people feeling that they are being victimized when you are never a victim. You have to empower yourself, to the very, very bitter end. That’s where you’ll find safety. You’ll be doing for the rest of your life. What gets better is what happens inside of you.

52

www.IONAZ.com January 2012

“That’s really the message that you have to bring and that’s what gets better—but bullying will always exist. Those people have no other options but to name themselves, “bullies” because they have no talent, they have no interests. I don’t like to give those people any power. I just laugh in their face! The other day I left a message on Facebook: ‘Just barrel through your day and leave those assholes in your glittery dust!’ That’s the way I see it. “There’s a whole new set of bullies in my life and these are grown up bullies, Raja continued. “[Burlesque queen] Dita Von Teese gave me her advice: ‘I have no haters; I have no bullies because I don’t allow them to exist in my life.’ It’s really helped me. “My parents wanted me to realize that if you want to be this freakish, crazy individual you have to be able to defend yourself—in any environment. Not just one that’s protected and fluffy and full of glitter.” Manila is the eternal optimist: “Who knows how long this is going to last? When people stop calling me, I’ll find myself a regular job. There’s so much more available out there and I just want to get some!” Looking to grab the fabled big, brass ring in Life, Manila? “Brass, honey? Screw brass! Platinum!”

appy New Rear, everyone! And that’s not just for you greedy “Tops” out there (all seventeen of you, anyway) but for you “Bottoms,” too. The thousands, and thousands of lonely, unsatisfied Bottoms tapping away on Grindr. 2011 is “behind” us, now! Let’s thrust into 2012 with lots of lubricant. Are you ready for your Mystery Date? Will he be a dreamboat? Or a dud? Matchmaker Celia Putty’s (top) Tuesday night “Meat Grinder” dating game of chance at Friends has been introducing and uniting lonelyhearts for nearly 20 years now. Well, actually just a couple of months. (It’s not like Celia actually reads this anyway. She told me so. Heck, I could say anything!) I heard that everybody’s favorite bird, the rare Tan Squawking Chickenhawk Clayton McKee (second from top) could smell the scent of baby powder in the air all the way from Charlie’s Taco Stand and flew over to nab the rare delicacy, the Mexican Chickadee, from the nest of bachelors. Join in the fun! Win a date with movie tix & brunch at Friends! Tell Celia I sent you. Because she won’t read this, remember. Things just won’t be the same in Llanview,

Pennsylviania. The fabled Philly ‘burb for the Lord family along with the Buchanans, Siegels, Rileys and Woleks on ABC’s legendary soap opera One Life to Live ends on January 13 after nearly 45 years. Nobody’s sorrier to see their favorite “story” go off the air than our very own Ted Kirby (third from top), who’s survived the tragedy of prostitution, rape, divorce, widowhood, time-travel and even associative personality disorder with the imaginary crackpot clans for the past twenty years. That’s roughly 5,200 hours of tearjerking (as opposed to jerking off, which I find infinitely more entertaining. But that’s just me.) For all the hardships you’ve suffered and the victories you’ve celebrated with the townfolk, Ted, (like this incredibly hot homo kiss between “Kyle Lewis” & “Oliver Fish” - bottom) and for your support of every drag show you’ve courageously lived through (and believe me, I know there’s been some tough ones!), Pride and Film Festivals you’ve volunteered for, and much, much more, you’re awarded the coveted Party Penguin of the Month! This is almost as exciting as the time Viki Lord died and went to Heaven but miraculously came back to tell the tale in Episode 23,347, isn’t it, Ted? Ted? Ted! Speak to me! TED! Send Addison pictures of your tushie and gossip to RumorHound@aol.com

January 2012

Aries Mar. 21 - Apr. 20

Libra Sep. 23 - Oct. 22

Declare a truce with somebody you’ve been at war with; frankly, you’re at a stalemate and nothing will be resolved unless something gives. You’ll be a hero and get a medal and a parade in your honor if you concede. Not really, but a Libra rewards you.

A financial predicament you’re embroiled in unravels itself this month. You know that saying about a penny saved is a penny earned? Obviously not. You’ve learned a lesson. And an expensive one. Stick with a thrifty Aries.

Taurus Apr. 21 - May 20

Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov.23

It’s a new year, and you might want to consider turning over a new leaf. Actually, get a rake. You might want to turn over lots of new leaves while you’re at it. A spiritual landscaping will amaze a Capricorn who wants to “trim your hedges.”

You know all those rumors people are discussing about you? Well, guess what? They’re true. Fortunately, it’s all in your favor. You can’t buy this kind of publicity ordinarily, pal! You’re lucky. Tell a Leo to keep their trap shut from now on.

Gemini May 21 - June 21

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 23

You’ll sing like a canary when you’re presented with an opportunity that’s too good to pass up. Remember to examine the fine print, or you’ll be singing the blues. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. A Sagittarius can be tricky.

You’ll do something so outrageous that everyone will think you’ve gone off the rails. Again. Frankly, you may want to tone it down. Just a teensy bit. A Libra and a Gemini really want to take you seriously. For once. Please?

Cancer June 22 - July 22

You’ll be starting out the new year with a bang! Everything you say and do will have tongue’s wagging. Don’t push the envelope too far or you’ll just look silly, especially to a Scorpio. Your birthday will be remembered by everybody. Maybe even you.

Stick to your guns! Someone tries to steer you in the wrong direction, and that’s usually down the Road to Perdition. Your moral compass points to the right Path to Righteousness. Gosh! You’re practically a saint! A Pisces might be the Devil.

Capricorn Dec. 23 - Jan. 20

Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19

You might get caught with your hand in the cookie jar if you’re not careful. Don’t help yourself to something that’s illegal, immoral or fattening. You know what I mean. You’ll be rewarded for a fat-free act by a Taurus.

This month may be the month to splurge: by yourself some new underwear for crying out loud. You’ll want to show it off to someone special on your birthday—and those Granny Panties gotta go. A Virgo wants to keep your knickers for a souvenir.

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sep. 22

Pisces Feb. 20 - Mar. 20

Leo July 23 - Aug. 22

A reunion with a long lost friend or family member leaves you speechless when a secret is revealed. You haven’t heard anything this juicy since high school. An Aquarian reveals the answer to an old question. 82

January 2012

A journey begins for you. It may be actual, or spiritual, psychological or emotional. It may just be across town. Still, this is one trip where you’ll get rid of baggage—so pack light. A Cancer has too much carry-on.
