Art is a Great Hobby
elcome to the new and improved ION Arizona. While we add more great content for our October and April festival issues, this is the first time we have produced a fold-out cover. ION is—and always has been—a canvas for artists, models, photographers, cartoonists and writers. I was the first mediocre ION artist. I was the genuine, original “Jack of all trades, master of none.” When was a kid, I loved to draw. I drew while others played. My Dad and my teachers saw this talent and nurtured my passion. In the years that followed, my dad gave me paper, crayons, pencils, markers, air brush, a camera, a typewriter, a computer and forced me into art school. We never knew where this would lead me, but here we are today: they were grooming me to be a publisher.

But all of the gifts and support paled in comparison to his real greatness. It came in one sentence: “Art is a great hobby!” I hated when my dad said that. I hated him for saying it. I felt insulted. It wasn’t until he passed away last month when I realized his greatest gift to me was that one sentence. I have spent my entire adult life proving him wrong. And he knew that’s what I needed to be motivated. It worked. Thank you, Dad. So, you’re enjoying this and every issue of ION Arizona all because of my Dad. Just Dad. RIP

Lea DeLaria sings Bowie

ong before Ellen, she was the first openly gay comic to perform in America on TV. In 1993 on the late night The Arsenio Hall Show she greeted audiences: “Hello everybody, my name is Lea DeLaria, and it’s great to be here, because it’s the 1990s! It’s hip to be queer! I’m a big dyke!” Could she parlay this into future success? “Every time I bump my head on the glass ceiling of show business they seem to raise the ceiling for me,” she says. “So when I did that I thought, ‘That’s it. I’ve made it. My career is done. This is what I did. This is what I can do.’ I’ve done so much more since then. We’ve done so much more as a community! I was a just comic, working the talk show set, doing my routine, right? 25 years after that it lead to me being a regular on a hit TV show is an amazing amount of progress. I went on to become this very smart, savvy, interesting butch dyke on the number one television show in the world. ” She’s brash, crass, smart and very funny. She’s one of the most entertaining people in America. She’s proved that she’s here to stay. Lea DeLaria spoke with ION Arizona about just some of the experiences she’s sandwiched into the past quarter century, and her latest jazz album.
to be gay in every state in the union. I think our queer youth fail to realize the quality of their lives and what people had to sacrifice to make that happen. Everything from the Laramie incident to AIDS. People have given up their lives for them to be able to get married. ION: And now! You’ve even done voice over work in “Cars 3: Driven to Win.” Lea: Yes! I’m part of the Disney family! I turned 60 this year; on my birthday I had the best present ever: Disney called and said they’re putting this “Miss Fritter” thing from Cars 3 in Disneyland. My voice is gonna be in Disneyland! This is fantastic! (laughs) ION: The role of inmate Carrie “Big Boo” Black in “Orange is the New Black” was written especially for you. Did you watch any old women’s prison pictures for examples?
ION: You’ve been arrested twice for “open and notorious homosexuality,” once in Illinois and once in Missouri. Lea: Well, I’m far from the only one. More than a decade after I was arrested they stormed into and took two men out of their bedroom in Georgia and arrested them on an old law—on grounds of sodomy! That was 1994! It’s an ugly part of the American past we don’t talk about enough. When I came out it was illegal October 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 41
Lea: Are you serious? “Caged” is a classic! But I like “I Want to Live” with Susan Hayward (pictured right) one of my all time favorites. But those noir films aren’t the same as what I’m doing. They’re very stylized. Very overly dramatic. Very soap opera. The biggest difference is the reality of it. Our show is real. When the show came out and I started being followed on Twitter by the Women’s Prison Association, I knew that we were getting it right. They told us that. On a personal level, just being on a set with all these women is fuckin’ amazing. Being the only rooster in that henhouse is really fun! ION: You’ve performed on stage, motion pictures, TV, voice overs, recorded music. Which format is your favorite? Lea: My favorite thing is paying my fuckin’ rent, honey! (laughs) I’ve been doing this since 1982; I’ve never had a day job. As long as I can continue to keep feeding my face and paying my bills, I like doing all of it. But truth be told, I was born to be downstage, center, belting out a D sharp. ION: You’ve been singing jazz since you were 12. You recorded five albums. Your most recent is House of David: delaria + bowie = jazz. How did you come up with the concept? 42
WWW.IONAZ.COM October 2018
Lea: All the jazz I do is weird. Except for one album, I don’t do the American Songbook. I have a Christmas album where I do the standard stuff—jingle belly stuff, nothing Christian. I’ve been a huge fan of David Bowie my entire life. He was a genius. His composition is succinct; he’s a perfect songwriter. It’s all rooted in rhythm and blues, as all rock and roll is, making it easy to record in the language of jazz. What came as a surprise was when Bowie started following me on Twitter and told everyone to contribute to my GoFundMe campaign since the Warner Brothers Jazz label no longer existed. He championed this record into the studio—which is amazing. He died six months later. My relationship was with him saying how much he loved it and that everyone should support it. ION: Anyone you’d like to duet with? Lea: I have several duets on a bunch of different albums. I just did a show at
Birdland Jazz Club here in New York where I had a different performer every night. I had everyone from Danny Brooks (“Taystee” in OITNB) who just won a Tony for “The Color Purple,” to Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland. I love ‘em! ION: Let’s talk about scat ... what does it mean to you? Lea: It’s part of the genre. My father taught me how to be a real musician and not just a “chick singer,” as we call them in our industry. There’s a lot of onus on jazz singers just to be pretty and have a pleasant voice. There are a handful out there who want to be musicians, and our instrument is our voice. The scatting is part of what that musicianship is. It’s scale. It’s be-bop. It’s having an understanding of the 12 notes and music, what can go where and when. If you don’t understand music theory, you’re not gonna be a good scatter.
it’s been retired. But it’s very funny, I agree. ION: We’ve got some great single ladies here in Arizona, you know. Lea: I’m always in the market, but we all know that I’m the Jack Nicholson of lesbians ... I’m not looking to get tied down, but I’m always happy to go out on a date. I’m as single as it gets. So come ‘n’ get it, ladies! ION: If you weren’t the Lea DeLaria we know and love, what would you be doing? Lea: Probably prostitution, because I’m such a great fuck, I can’t think of anything else! Lea DeLaria has over 229k followers on Twitter and 487k on Facebook. Why? “I’m a big, butch dyke. And I’m a friendly one. With a smile on my face,” she says.
ION: If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? Lea: Oh! To be able to take out any tyrant without getting caught! Trump ... boom! Pence ... boom! Kim Jong Un ... boom! The asshole who’s running for president in Brazil ... boom! ION: Tell us about your upcoming appearance at Chandler Arts Center. What can we expect? Lea: Music and comedy. I’ll be doing a lot of the Bowie stuff. I’ll also be talking excessively about the current administration and the state of queer politics—which is kinda what I do. Look at my Twitter: “Fuck Trump Fridays” is my favorite day, although “Sunday Butch Day” is pretty good to. ION: Will you tell your famous “How to Fist” joke in Chandler? Lea: I don’t think so! But you never know! It’s been seen by so many people now,
You can catch her on Friday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. For tickets go to ChandlerCenter.org or call 480-782-2680 October 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 43

Detox A
one time fixture on the Southern California drag scene, now in Chicago, the silicon-stuffed wonder, Detox, is an eagerly sought after drag performer and recording artist, appearing in the band, Tranzkuntinental. Detox also performs with her drag daughter Vicky Vox and Drag Race alum, Willam. She’s also appeared in Kesha’s and Rhianna’s music videos.
Detox began performing in drag in an Orlando nightclub as a teenager. After moving to Los Angeles, she was a staple in Chad Michael’s “Dreamgirls Revue.” Detox auditioned for every season of RuPaul’s Drag Race until she eventually got cast on Season 5 of the award winning reality series, where she placed fourth. She later returned for the All Stars 2 competition, where she finished as runner-up. Detox won the children’s TV show-themed main challenge in episode 3 “Draggle Rock” As part of the show, Detox sang on the “We Are the World”-inspired song, “Can I Get an Amen?” The song’s proceeds helped benefit the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. No stranger to plastic surgery, Detox announced this past June that she’d be going under the knife yet again on the E! reality series, “Botched,” about plastic surgery gone horribly wrong. She had her artificial six-pack abs corrected.
Detox will be a headliner on the Main Stage at the Rainbows Festival accompanied by Charlie’s Divas on Saturday, October 20 at 4:30 p.m. She’ll have a “Meet ‘n’ Greet” at Charlie’s at 7 p.m.

he gender-bending “Raja Gemini” is the stage name of Sutan Amrull, an Asian-American makeup artist, and drag performer. In addition to winning RuPaul’s Drag Race, season 3, Amrull is known for his work as the head makeup artist on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model. His clientele includes celebrities Pamela Anderson, Tyra Banks, Dita Von Teese, Paulina Porizkova, Iman, Twiggy, and singer Adam Lambert, whom he counts among his best friends Amrull auditioned for the third season of the reality competition as “Raja,” entering the Drag Race workroom dressed in club attire. Raja was a member of the notorious gang called, “Heathers,” (a clique composed of Raja, Carmen Carrera, Manila Luzon and Delta Work, taking its name from the popular cult film, Heathers). Raja emerged as a clear front runner during the start of the competition due to her high sense of fashion and style as well as stellar performances. During the Snatch Game she won high praise from the judges for her impersonation of Tyra Banks. In the finale, Raja was up against contestants Alexis Mateo and Manila Luzon. In the final episode, after a lip-sync battle with Manila Luzon, to Rupaulʻs song “Champion” Raja was declared the winner of the show’s third season and crowned “America’s Next Drag Superstar” and won a lifetime supply of Kryolan makeup, and a cash prize of $75,000. In addition to performing, Raja is now RuPaul’s makeup artist for the award-winning reality series.
Raja works her magic on the Main Stage at Rainbows Festival at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, October 21. A Meet ‘n’ Greet will be at Club Volt at 7 p.m.

Reach For The “Rainbow” America’s First All Openly Gay Boyband

J
ay, Mike, Randy, Devin and Gama are ECHO V. By all outward appearances, the five seem to be the typical boy band with good looks, lush harmonies and killer choreography, but they have one important difference: they’re all gay. Their debut single, “Rainbow,” reflects their decision to be out about their sexuality. While it’s a fun, high energy, pop anthem with an explosive hook that will get listeners dancing and singing, it also has an important message. “Be proud,” explains Jay. “Our hope is that the song inspires people to stand up and claim their truth, be happy with who they are and find comfort in the fact that they are not alone.
“Rainbow is about unapologetically owning your multifaceted-ness and realizing that you have to live for yourself. It’s a journey to self-discovery and the strength it takes to live life in the open, day in and out.” The five were united by their management who were looking to build the next generation of boy band. At first, management didn’t know the group they had assembled were all gay. It was the guys that realized it after coming together. They and management decided to go with it. “We’re musicians who take a great pride in the art we create,” Jay said. “We want listeners to be proud of who they are and there is no other way for us to do that other than to be honest with who we are.” Echo V will be headlining the main stage at Rainbows Festival at 2:30 p.m. of Saturday October, 20. Visit EchoVMusic.info Follow ECHOV on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and @echovmusic ECHO V’s “Rainbow” is available via the band’s website. The music video is on YouTube.

Highs & Lows A Star Is Born Starring: Bradley Cooper, Stefani Germanotta, Sam Elliott This is the fourth incarnation of the famous tale about show business seduction and corruption. Fast-living, hard-drinking C&W crooner Jackson Maine (Cooper, American Hustler) discovers Ally, (Germanotta. Okay, we all know she’s Lady Gaga.) an unknown singer. Soon Ally’s on the edge of glory, while Jackson’s career fizzles. Love game or a bad romance? Comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay is a scene stealer as Ally’s “very Italian” father. Will this reboot stack up to the other iconic gay diva’s opuses, including the 1954 Judy Garland/James Mason or the 1976 Streisand/Kristofferson versions and leave audiences, well, speechless? Opens October 5
Beautiful Boy Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Steve Carell Crystal meth seizes a normal, White, uppermiddle class
family. Teenager Nic (Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name) spirals into a web of “tina,” plus gay-for-pay hustling. His desperate father (Carell, The Office) will do anything to save him. A true story of survival, relapse, recovery and family dynamics. Opens October 11
Can You Ever Forgive Me? Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant A true story of best-selling celebrity biographer, (and a cat loving lesbian. Go figure.) Lee Israel (McCarthy, SNL, Spy). Lee’s puff-pieces led to her failure with a public wanting scandalous tell-alls. Broke, Lee stole autographed papers and letters of famous dead people, replacing them with forgeries, aided by her gay BFF, Jack (Grant, Game of Thrones.) An openly queer tale, this is McCarthy’s time to shine. Oscar is watching this one. Opens October 19 October 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 65

Christine & the Queens Chris
On her extraordinary debut album Chaleur Humaine, Héloïse Letissier combined her love for 80s greats Madonna and Michael Jackson created an unabashed queer androgyne look and sound. In her new guise as the lustful “Chris,” she harnesses 80s funk to grapple with gender and identity. “Girlfriend” bounces like a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis record, “Doesn’t Matter” and “5 Dollars” rock like the best of Eurythmics. Chris is a defiantly queer self-portrait and absolute must-listen. Available Now
Jungle For Ever
This funk collective from the UK, made a splash with their 2014 buzzy debut album. Inspired by break-ups and Los Angeles nostalgia, For Ever has signature funk bops like “Heavy California” and “Beat 54” with a test of mopier material. They fare better on their bread and butter. If you don’t find For Ever, it’ll find you, at the gym, on a commercial, in the background of the supermarket. Get ahead and give it a listen. Available Now
Cher Dancing
Queen
She was swinging with Sonny in the 60’s, did Disco, took on rock power ballads, and continued on to turn the world’s axis with “Believe” in the 90’s. We haven’t had a hit since the Clinton administration. Now Cher takes on the great Scandinavian songbook, ABBA. So over-the-top, it rivals the plot of Burlesque. She tackles classics “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” “SOS” and “One of Us” with a trite, expected pop production that seems unbecoming of an icon. Why should Cher cover anyone? Available Now Lana Del Rey

This makes things awkward on the promenade deck. Available October 9
The Witch Files Talk about mean girls! High school becomes, well, hell for these chicks. After a spooky walk in the woods, these witchy bitches form a coven and harness the ability to bring everyone in study hall under their control. Don’t you wish you knew them back in school?
Starring: Uma Thurman, Anna Sophia Robb When Kit’s father dies, she becomes a troublemaker. She’s recruited to attend the super friendly sounding Blackwood Boarding School. Surprisingly, it’s a spooky old mansion with a student body of other misfit girls. As you can imagine, pep rallies here are no fun. Available October 16
Slender Man Based on folklore and urban legend, the skinny, faceless, 8-foot tall creature stalks and eats kids. (And that makes him bad?) Fact: children have killed because of him. Hula’s Modern Tiki A
“ loha ‘oe,” means “hello” and “goodbye.” Even though Hula’s Modern Tiki hip kahunas and teeny wahinis were forced to leave their homey hut on Central Avenue after nine years, (damn developers!) they sailed over to a breezy new island paradise nearby, on 7th Street where the old Ticoz stood. After an incredible million dollar total remodel, the new Hula’s is hotter than Kilauea. Your favorite servers from the old island are still there, just as friendly, and wickiwicki (fast) as ever. You’ll still feel like ‘ohana (family.) Even the nuns at the Sisters of Charity convent dine there weekly. The British Navy’s Captain Cook discovered the South Sea paradise we call “Hawaii” in 1778, calling them the “Sandwich Islands.” Cook ... Sandwich. I’m seeing a “food” theme here. Are you? So many distant lands inspire the Island State’s cuisine. Let’s explore Hula’s everyday luau! There’s so much more to it than Spam and macaroni salad (although they make celebrity guest appearances on the
menu.) But no poi. Thank goodness. Anchor’s aweigh! 15 “Starters” get things rolling at Hula’s. We love the Crispy Coconut Shrimp Rolls. Think of an egg roll. But better. Served with a spritely pineapple-horseradish dipping sauce. $8. You’ll go overboard for the trendy, Island Style Poke with delish raw ahi tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, avocado, onions, wonton chips, macadamia nuts. $13. We lava love the Spicy Edamame, a bowl of beans with a Serrano pepper kick for $7. Don’t miss out on the Samurai Beef Sticks with grilled Mongolian beef, skewered with pineapple, scallions, and a peppy lime-curry dipping sauce, $8 Shiver me timbers! With seven choices, any one of “Hula’s Favorites” will be yours, too. The Loco Moco is a specialty: a burger patty and perfectly cooked rice covered October 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 71
in a rich, dusky mushroom gravy and a sunnyside up egg for $11. The Hawaiian Jerk Pork Plate is a winner. Tender, slow roasted pulled pork, mouthwatering jerk sauce, plantains, rice, mango salsa, and fantastic, corn muffinlike Jamaican johnny cakes, $15 For landlubbers: now for those “Sandwiches” (and burgers, too!) Get the Hunkin’ Samoa Burger. Jack cheese, fried Spam (Hawaii is the top consumer of Hormel’s famous canned spiced ham), linguisa sausage (thanks to early Portuguese explorers), a sunnyside up egg (thanks to a hen), spicy hula sauce. You’ll be saying, “I want Samoa!” for sure. (Get it?) There’s nine more for you to discover here on your travels. Even sunny Mexico lent their influence to Hula’s. Take your pick of shrimp, pork, ahi, fish, steak, chicken or tofu tacos, served with black beans, rice and housemade salsa roja. $12-$15 Gourmet Fresh Fish dishes, and Hulafabu-licious “Bowls” also grace the menu. Portions? The folks at Hula’s is never manini (stingy) and you’ll leave with your ōpū (stomach) full and happy. Everything at Hula’s is made from scratch daily. You have to quaff their famous tropical cocktails. Try a Mai Tai, a Zombie, the Blood Orange Martini, the damned Tiki Bastard, or share a giant, flaming Scorpion with the whole table. Be sure to check Hula’s “Weekly Specials” with daily 72

concoctions, like $5 mystery cocktails or shots on Mondays or the All Night Happy Hour every Wednesday. Thar she blows! If you’ve got a little bit of pirate blood in you, and feeling a little daring, check out the “secret” saloon in the “Captain’s Cabin” where only premium hooch is served. (Besides, you need to meet their tattooed, super sexy seadog behind the bar, Matt, who’ll really hoist your mizzenmast, boys! You’ll be singing, “Yo! ‘Ho! Blow the man down!” Trust me on this one, sailors. Don’t forget to say, “Mahalo nui loa!” when you leave!

Fun Fact: Chris’ greatgrandfather invented the “davenport” (we call it a “sofa,”) and he’s the heir to the living room furniture B fortune. He is not, however, related to “Dawn Davenport,” Teenage Runaway (B) from film classic “Female Trouble.”
hey’re goin’ to the chapel and they’re gonna get married! and, hey, Ding– dongs! The bells are gonna chime! Dear readers! It’s all about The Davenports! I couldn’t be happier to announce that after over nine long, dreary C years of waiting, yummy Chris Davenport finally proposed marriage to his faithful, dreamy beau, Clayton Scherf. After he popped the question and Clayton

Volcano Joen Romero Martínez shocked the audience with the meatiest tuck of them all as “Amanda Sitonit.” He told me, “I cain’g make eet smaller!” (Like, who would have a problem with that?!) She nuzzled up to Dominique McKenzie (Devon Norris) in the not-so-Green Room. (H)
birdie mama (D) preened in their avian splendor for a recent game— which the birdbrains on the field lost.
G Mr. Phoenix Pride (and Tucson ex-pat) Daniel Eckstrom canoodled with his young Old Pueblo pal, “The Tallest Woman in Living in Captivity,” the fabulous Janeé Starr, (E) who we never see enough of. Daniel started his own little cottage industry of wreath-making to support him and Nick Ray in their old age. Kidding! The proceeds go to the Phoenix Pride Scholarship Fund. Imagine the look of delight and merriment on the trick-ortreaters’ faces when they see a sprightly, kid-loving “IT” clown wreath I on your door! (F) Get yours today! The town was a-buzz with Barbra Seville’s fabled annual Turnabout Show this year at The Rock, raising over $2,400. adorablicious Kristofer V. Lee backstage. (I) (Has anybody else out there seen him in his oh-so-tighty-whities? well, I did. And I wasn’t hatin’ on him for that, either. Sorry I couldn’t provide that snapshot for you little kittens. I like to leave you all with something to imagine!) Joshua Sipe (a.k.a. “Claudia B”) and Marcos Sandoval (a.k.a.) Trixxie Deluxxe) (J) helped all the little budding draglettes spread their legs and fly. “Wings.” I meant, “wings.”

Sadly, the legendary Miss Shirley Garland was not invited. Shocker!

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22
V
enus is in retrograde October 5 through November 16. If you didn’t finish working through messy, icky relationship issues during the same event last year, you will now. ¶ Jupiter entered Scorpio nearly a year ago. The pair reveals the mystery of things. Jupiter expands our access to the Spirit World. ¶ It’s time to pick up the stake and hammer, buy silver bullets and garlic. By the time this ends on November 8 you will reclaim power and achieve victory. Intensity, willpower and strength are really kicking in. All that means, “Go kill some monsters.” ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20
You need to be flexible and adapt to any situation. Are in you a haunted house? A graveyard after midnight? The laboratory of a mad scientist? Got bats in your belfry? It’s a good time to clear them out. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20
You’ll see things through new eyes soon. Well, new to you, anyway. Keep your head on straight. Even if you have to use nuts and bolts to do it. GEMINI May 21 - June 21
Your powers of seduction are increased. Look for love and romance. You can’t resist a beautiful, white throat. Increase your visibility. Well, maybe not during the day or by using a mirror, however. CANCER June 22 - July 22
It feels like your brain belongs to, uh, someone else. Is it because you’re in love? Little things make you happy. Like tossing daisies into a pond. Be careful. LEO July 23 - Aug. 22
Love is a major focus, but it’s a good time for artistic work and creativity. Like, say, building your own monster. It’s a good time for socializing with angry villagers. 118

Venus says, “Dig deep for romantic adventure.” About six-feet deep should be enough. Neptune in Pisces opens the door to the Realm of the Spirit. (Organ music plays.) LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22
Everything is about Love for you! You fulfill your own personal pleasures and accomplish goals. It’s never too late to practice casting a spell or two. If it’s your birthday, find time to dust the haunted house and cleaning the family crypt. SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23
Take advantage of new opportunities. You might be starting up a new business, like running a bloodmobile, or becoming a scientist. Birthday Scorps find beneficial changes, but you need to activate dormant energies. Like, in a lab. On a mountain. During lightning storm. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23
You might overdo it a bit this month. There’s only so much blood (or whatever) you can suck. Now’s a good time to sneak back into your coffin and cocoon. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20
It’s a great time for your career. There’s more responsibility ... more graves to rob, more creatures to reanimate, werewolves to tame, but you’ll be rewarded. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19
Your life is like a Ouija session. You’re asking questions and the answers are, “Yes” as you overcome obstacles and follow spiritual pursuits. Just remember: never play Ouija in a cemetery. Ever. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20
Your partner may look at you for reassurance ... or the blood of a virgin. An old lover may return. Hopefully not from beyond the grave. Don’t ever stand in front of a mirror and say,“Bloody Mary” three times in the dark. Bad idea.
