STATE THE DISTRICT I Time : Stage 5, September 2016 Location : Wasington D.C., USA 3D Software : Sketchup, Rhino 5, Grasshopper The Open-data Chamber: Re-envisioning the government’s role within a representative democratic republic to create a newly conceived political framework, where open data informs architecture and public space to symbolize and engage the citizenry. Located within the heart of Washington DC, the Open-data Chamber sets out to create a more transparent and Open US Government to engage all. Protection and safe disclosure of US Government Data is critical whilst also raising awareness of the readily available Open Data. A library of open source data analytics, modules and tools are assembled to help develop an ongoing community of practice focused on data sharing challenges.
STATE THE DISTRICT II Time : Stage 5, January 2017 Location : Wasington D.C., USA 3D Software : Rhino 5, Grasshopper, 3DS Max In order to help move large volumes of air around the site in an effective and efficient manner, I looked to nature for inspiration. Rather than having lines of data blocks with long pipe runs and lots of bends. The idea is to cluster the data blocks in circles so the air can be extracted towards the middle. Many branching systems in Biology display a phenomonon called murrays law that shows a relationship between the diameter of vessels in branching systems. Biomimicry can be thought of as a process of transformation and an evolved minimum energy solution.
ARCHITECTURAL FORENSICS IN ANONYMOUS MONSTERS Time : Stage 4, September 2015 Location : Isle of Dogs, London 3D Software : Sketch-up, 3DS Max Midnight Sun Sailing Club: The proposed scheme will sit within the Crossharbour District Centre, at the heart of the Isle of Dogs. This sub-area, currently containing the Asda Site and Island Health Centre, is situated north of Mudchute Park and Crossharbour Docklands Light Railway station to the west providing good public Transport links. The project set’s out to be an extension/ partner building to the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre (DSWC). It shall provide an all year round service forWater sports enthusiast to develop and refine their Sailing skills and techniques. Currently the DSWC has a limited programme in the Winter due to a lack of light in the evening and the reduced temperature of winter. The club aims to combat the general perception that water sports such as Sailing are summer activities and they can still be practiced during the winter months.
URBAN Time : Stage 3, May 2014 Location : Cathedral close , Rochester, Kent 3D Software : Revit The current use of the site includes a car park and an area of open green space. The new structures on the site will primarily function as a postgraduate college for the University of Kent’s School of Music and Fine Arts. This will consist of studio and music practice spaces, some communal rooms, a Concert hall, Library, Gallery/ Cafe and a small scale residential accommodation. The site is of a strong historical context thus the scheme should consider this throughout the design process. Rochester Cathedral and a Norman Castle sit adjacent to the site and the proposal should complement them. An analysis of the existing physical, social and natural conditions will be required in order to respond appropriately to the brief using a suitable design language and urban planning strategy.
MODULAR Time : Stage 3, September 2013 Location : St Radigunds Place, Canterbury 3D Software : Revit The scheme consists of a private housing estate consisting of one bedroom, studio, and two bedroom, mezzanine, apartments. The site is adjacent to the River Stour and thus careful consideration was needed for the design to protect against flood risk. The scheme features a series of exterior and interior social spaces to encourage interaction between residents. The form of the building is one inspired by the rationalist ovement with the structural frame being clearly expressed on the exterior. The frame wraps the building and orders the circulation on the outside through open colonades to create open, inviting interior spaces. The building has been designed with reference to its urban context- a traditional, vernacular style that has long been associated with the city of Canterbury.
HAND SKETCHES Time : September 2016 Location : East Ferry Road, London Serial Vision: Always an emerging view. These quick drawings represent the experience of the pedetrian exploring the street by foot. Each turning reveals a new vista as one proceeds from existing view to emerging view
ALL HANDS + HEARTS Time : September 2017 - February 2018 Location : Yapatera, Piura Province, Peru Peru has suffered from continued rainfall since December 2016. The beginning of February 2017 saw an intensification of rainfall, leading to landslides, floods, flash floods, and mudflows. I was part of a volunteer team involved in building two schools for a community whom was very badly affected by the natural disasters. I was able to see the project through from initial start date to completion and handover. The unique experience allowed me to gain a whole new practical skillset whilst strengthening my understanding of building construction.
DESIGN + BUILD Time : Stage 5, September 2016 Location : Washington-Alexandria Architecture Centre, Washington D.C The project is to Design and Build a bench to sit in the entrance lobby at 601 Prince Street for the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Centre. The bench is made up of a composite of materials including timber, steel and concrete. The design has evolved from a previously developed project in the semester with the use of a recessed indent in the concrete to hold a steel member in place. Connected to the steel is a pig-nose steel connection which includes a female part that holds the timber bench in place with a male counterpart.
