PHYSICAL 3D TEX T

BRIEF To make a letter out of cardboard as accurate as possible. It should be Helvetica Neue bold - it should look good as a piece in its own right. It can be covered in paint or foil as an experiment. Once finished it should then be destroyed in a visually interesting way. METHODOLOGIES ◆◆ Working with a letter given in the brief. ◆◆ Planning on making a 3D object using cardboard with matches embedded into the cardboard face, fire-lighters, plastic and glue. With the view to set it on fire. ◆◆ Having learnt the word “Heuristic” this seems to be the approach that has been used. For example, using a safe place to start the fire.: E VA L U AT I O N This was an exciting project with and interesting outcome through film and photography. By being given the “L” it seemed an easy task. However, making it was slightly more complicated was accomplished relatively easily. The objective was to work out how to make it from one sheet of cardboard. Making and destorying as a concept will be a useful methodologie for future creative exercises.

The first attempt at filming the letter getting destroyed. The face of the letter is encrusted with matches. The last image in the sequence is titled “Helvetica’s Demise”. https://vimeo.com/141262980

The second attempt, Letter was made out of fire-lighters hense the water in the final image as the fire wasnt going out. https://vimeo.com/142142798

ILLUSTR ATION FOR ANIMATION BRIEF To find out all you can about Jon Burgerman. Buy a small A6 sketchbook and use two black pens similar to the ones used in the video then draw each sketch similar to the way Burgerman does – no shading, single line only. The theme is Space exploration. METHODOLOGIES ◆◆ Drawing 10 images a day for a week. ◆◆ Experimenting with the final illustrations. ◆◆ Digitally painting final sketches in Photoshop ◆◆ Animating the final composition made in Photoshop inside of Aftereffects. E VA L U AT I O N This module was enjoyable and provided new valueable skills and practices. When starting the sketches, they were all drawn using a fine liner that was too thick compared to the desired thickness. The drawings had to then be redrawn; and the final images were rendered to a higher quality for scanning and digitally colouring. Putting them into aftereffects was easily achieved as prior to importing a few minutes of organization took place. This project has demonstrated that designs presented in different environments are beneficial to the audience and to the designer.

SKETCHES

Above are the final images chosen to be taken forward from my original A6 sketch book for further development

Above - Sketches coloured in Illustrator sticking to a five colour palette, before moving onto the final panorama.

EXPERIMENTATION

Above you can see the development of the composition on the previous page.

Here you can see a large scale version of the final experimentation using the original composition. Personally I believe it to be a possible wallpaper or wrapping paper.

READY FOR ANIMATING

Above - These are the final illustrations that would be used in the final panoramic. Instead of using the painted illustrations from illustrator it was decided apon for them to be painted in photoshop

IDEAS THROUGH PROCESS & EXPERIMENTATION BRIEF You are to generate a set of Icons, symbols and indexical images that will be cut out using the laser cutter. The objective is to experiment using the elements from the cutter and develop different ideas. Use mono printing as part of this process. Experimentation is the key. METHODOLOGIES ◆◆ Design icons, symbols and indexical vectors inside of illustrator. ◆◆ Use the laser cutter to cut your vectors and use them to do mono prints. ◆◆ Experiment using projection outdoors. E VA L U AT I O N This project has been interesting and confusing at the same time, as well as empirical. Working with a laser cutter and incorporating it into mono printing was an interesting way of working. Especially when taken into digital format as the effects achieved are a lot different to those when using digital applications. It becomes clear that experimentation both physical and conceptual are ideal in problem solving and creating interesting and creative graphic design.

MODULE EVALUATION

E VA L U AT I O N From start to finish of experimental communication, a lot of new skills and knowledge has been learnt. Starting off the module everyone was asked to create a 3D object and destroy it in an interesting way and document it. Documenting work isn’t new to our group, but recording it and using software in postproduction is new. Using video format to document your work is defiantly something that will be used again in the close future. Other then using video to document work, turning still images into a simple animation is a technique that will be touched on again to present work on a wider variety of medias. One of the most challenging parts of this whole module would have to be “Ideas through process and experimentation”, learning a new printing technique and applying it to our work. Mono printing is an unique technique that will have many different avenues in future projects, the main element of mono printing that is more then intriguing is the use of pressure on softened paper. Having group work handed to us in the final week of university felt very rushed and forced upon as we had no knowledge of another task being forced upon us. Before, starting this new project it seemed necessary to see the location where we would be doing our projections. After scouting the area on the way home, I thought that one aspect that would be important to research prior is the laws regarding what we were doing. In the end we didn’t have any problems other then with a neighbor where knowing the laws regarding projecting outdoors did come in handy.

If this module were to be returned to, the printmaking would deserve more attention in and outside of university. The tutorials given I felt they were very rushed and at no point there were any hands on experience, so further knowledge of the workshop would have to be perused. Other then this small hiccup the rest of the semester was pretty much seamless. Skills and knowledge will be used in the final semester to help with my final major project.
