99 LUF TBALLOONS BRIEF You are required to visualise on post it notes 99 different creative concepts on how to rescue a helium filled balloon, that is stuck on the ceiling of a very tall room.
MANDATORIES qqYou must come up with 99 different ideas. qqThere is no limit to your imagination. qqStart with realistic solutions then move further outside your own imagination. qqEvery idea is to go onto a wall once complete. qqOrganise the items into their broader concepts.
EVALUATION Using this way of working on a concept, it was easy to see that this was a good technique for expanding your own thoughts and ideas. This technique will defiantly come in handy in more than one occasion, as well as writing and reading this the outcomes that come to mind are interesting to say the least.

M APPING BRIEF Start thinking about mapping and how you would illustrate a complex set of information. For this project you are asked to develop this concept in your own way, they can be as realistic, normal, surreal, funny and dangerous as you like.
MANDATORIES qqCreate more than one map using information you have found. qqAll your maps should be designed and exported through Illustrator. qqKeep your designs as simple as possible. qqYour information should be easy to understand.
13
EVALUATION For this project the feeling was that it is mainly based upon information graphics, and that is what describing a complex set of information that you have found meant. Info graphics is one of those designs that you find yourself always coming across on the Internet and for myself I have never designed one before, so I was very intrigued. As I progressed through three different designs that I created, they gradually got better and better in my eyes. Now that I have used this technique I will be using it in the future as it is not something that is foreign to myself.

MINI EVALUATION As I had no idea where to start with an information graphic, as part of my research I went to the Internet like any good student should. The search that really influenced my first design was looking at semiotic designs; unfortunately the search was taking place on my iPhone at the time, a device renowned for its useless battery. This is where the idea came from, to create an information graphic showing my daily routine, the duration of my battery life and how it influences my day. After getting all the elements of my design I then proceeded onto laying it out. My first attempt didn’t turn out to be as good as expected as you can see from the design to the left. After sometime of thought I decided, as it is a daily routine why not incorporate a timeline element into the final design that can be seen on the right.

MINI EVALUATION I decided that every information graphic that I was going to design would be related to my everyday life. One main aspect of my life at the time of designing this was the amount of hours consuming my everyday routine. When the design was being put together I wanted to keep the illustration demonstrating my data as recognizable as possible as well was abstract.

Travel My Time
After receiving feedback I went back to the drawing board, some of the feedback that was received was to have seven circles instead of just six to represent a week a lot clearer. The last piece of feedback received was that I didn’t need the 24 hours inside of each pie.The design on the right is the final outcome. I wasn’t completely happy with the second design therefore I wanted to change the layout, emphasize the key and the timings to the petals inside the pie chart. The final design really captured the symmetry that I wanted to from the initial design.

MINI EVALUATION Following the two previous information graphics, I wanted to keep to the theme of problems around my everyday life. The idea for this info graphic came from the 99 luftballoons exercise, where I had written in the unlikely section of “how to dry my socks” to ask my mum. I decided to proceed with this as it had the greatest effect to my peers, I assume this is because they can relate. I knew the technique I wanted to use for this information graphic as it’s a style that I have been working on for a while. One of the hardest aspects of this design was how it was going to look in digital format, as you can see on the left had side there was a lot of indecisions. Finally after enough tests I wanted to bring a skill from another module and apply it to the information graphic.

PSYC HOGEOGR APHY BRIEF This is more than just photography, it is about finding and creating out of immediate experience, in and around a location. You are expected to go on a journey and capture serendipitous observations along the way.
MANDATORIES qqDocument your dérieve as you go on your journey. qqOne dérieve must be completed in the local vicinity of UWL. qqConduct your own dérieve away from university. qqYou are expected to challenge the normal in your journey.
EVALUATION I really enjoyed this project as it gave a lot of freedom, in total I did four dérieves one in Ealing within walking distance of the university, two in my local area using a taxi and lastly I did one in Prague, Czech Republic. All in all I will be using this technique of going on serendipitous journeys as I found it relaxing as well as very productive with interesting outcomes.

EALING DERIEVE MINI EVALUATION For my journey I had no plan initially when I started, but as I got into my stride I soon came across a spider on a web. In an ideal world I would have liked to follow on from the spider by keeping my eye out for other wildlife, but as the journey was to be only for an hour (thirty minutes there and back) I didn’t believe I would get enough data. Soon after I decided I would document the shapes of foliage and I didn’t just want to sketch these as well as I could but to use an unusual medium such as a Japanese calligraphy brush. 23

24
DÉRIEVE ONE
MINI EVALUATION For my first dérieve, done independently I wanted more than just the outcome to be serendipitous. What I meant by this is initially with the dérieve completed in Ealing I walked around an area I knew and I could have subconsciously chosen the route I had taken. As a solution to this I decided to hire a taxi to drive me around my postcode taking any route he pleased and the journey was to be only 10 minutes. Once in the taxi I wanted to take photos but not just standard stills, long exposures as it was nighttime and I knew I would be able to capture light streams from vehicles and buildings. At the time of taking these images, my camera was also set to monochrome, which was a style I did end up warming up to in the end.

DÉRIEVE T WO MINI EVALUATION My second dÊrieve was based mainly on the initial journey shown on the page before. I wanted to redo this journey as I really was taken with the concept of it being completely unplanned, but I wanted to do this journey in colour as I felt it may give me a completely different outcome or appearance. After completing the journey and looking at the images I felt the different colours that can be seen in the photographs really gives you a different feeling to the whole journey.

PR AGUE DÉRIE VE MINI EVALUATION I had to travel to Prague during one of my early lectures so I thought instead of putting the time to waste I would do a dÊrieve whilst in the city. For this journey I kept to the same rules as I did with the very first journey but keeping to the idea of capturing lights. Once I arrived in the city centre I soon noticed that the streetlights and the Christmas decorations were different to London. Not only did I want to capture the different types of lighting seen around the city but I also wanted it to have a essence of Christmas to it because of the decorations I was photographing.

CONDITIONAL DESIGN BRIEF You are to use one of the conditional designs from the book provided, designed by a group of graphic designers based in the Netherlands.
MANDATORIES qqPlay the game given to you with no more then 4 of your peers in a group. qqFollow the rules of the dedicated game to the T. qqRecord your group’s gameplay. qqUse only the equipment listed in the book.
EVALUATION I have never come across this before in design but again this is another technique I will be incorporating into my work, it gave outcomes that I don’t believe I would have got otherwise. As I could see design implications for this technique I wanted to design something using it other then the final outcome from the group work and I am more then happy with the final outcomes.

RULES BASED DESIGN BRIEF Come up with your own version of the game you were given in the conditional design workshop and test it out on your friends or peers. Make adjustments or changes along the way to see what works best.
MANDATORIES q Record all the outcomes from your game. q Produce instructions for your game. q Document every stage of your development.
EVALUATION Following last week’s workshop conditional design I wanted to follow on the same rules just tweaked it so that my final outcome is very different. The main rules to my final design were very much the same, as previously you couldn’t lift your pen off the page, it is to be a continuous line and you are to draw a face. As I tested the game multiple times I changed one rule ever so slightly everytime. After multiple attempts I feel that the design at the beginning is still the best outcome from all of the trials.

Your Lines cannont touch. 40
Your lines can touch or overlap.
Your pen can lift off the surface. 41
You must use one minute to draw a face.

ONE A DAY BRIEF You are to produce something everyday for a week, this can be anything there is no limit to how creative you can be.
MANDATORIES qqYou must produce one artifact a day. qqThis is a weeklong project.
45
EVALUATION For my one a day, I decided I would create a font a day as it is something I have always been interested in but never had the time to pursue it. As you’ll be able to see for yourself the fonts gradually got better as everyday went past. The first two days were definitely the most challenging of the bunch as I had never created fonts before and wanted them to come across decorative. As I progressed they slowly got more legible until I started going slightly more creative towards the end with negative space type.
