editor's note

Sea otters hold hands while they sleep in the water so as to not drift apart from one another. Lighthouses stand dutifully with unwavering beacons, illuminating the way home for ships and their sailors through storms and fair weather. And protons and neutrons are bound by nuclear force, forming the nucleus in each of one-hundred thousand quadrillion vigintillion atoms in the known universe. Our natural world is characterized by the interconnectedness of living organisms and abiotic components alike, and it is in this sense that human beings are able to find strength through valuing and maintaining our bonds with one another. With this new issue, JNB Lit hopes to spark your initiative to connect to those who are important to you, from your loved ones to your inner creative self to the heroes of our community. Stay healthy, well, and safe!

On any normal day, we can usually see a great number of people sitting in restaurants, chatting with their friends and family, and enjoying their meals. But what happens when that’s no longer possible? What happens to the restaurant owners? After this time of crisis, many of the restaurants that we know and love may struggle to reopen after the weeks and maybe months without income. In an effort to help the restaurants we love, JNB Lit has compiled a short collection of restaurants, cafes, and eateries to review that can be ordered from a variety of delivery services. Other ways that you can support these businesses include buying gift cards for future use, tipping the workers, and donating personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves. Without further ado, please enjoy JNB Lit’s takeout reviews and remember to stay safe and healthy!

letters destiny lang My dearest friend, how I’ve missed you so! Why do our letters come home so slow? In my mail, you will find our photo: Memories of us donning blue! When was the last time you danced with glee? Dance as if no soul was there to see? To my delight, dear friend you’re the key: Tell me if you miss me too! Stay warm and cozy when you see snow, Shield your skin from the summer sun’s glow. When you tell stories, I ought to know! Your words are what I value! Sometimes you’re busy, I understand. Sometimes our lives won’t go as planned. Sometimes we could all use a kind hand, I’ll always be there for you!

ou’re like a polaroid. I’m like a polaroid. ur friendship is like a polaroid

asted on the wall are the memories we’ve eated

brant colours highlighting our best times gether

enuine smiles adorning every one of them

ese polaroids will never break and will ver be lost. Just like our friendship

r so I thought

ut polaroids don’t break. Polaroids fade. st like our friendship

ur friendship is fading. You’re fading om me

m trying my best to save the photos. Our endship. The last bits of colour, the last the best memories

ut I’m scared. I’m scared of accidentally eaking them. Or causing them to fade ore

o I reach out to you. I want to fix this. I n’t lose these. I can’t lose you

ut it seems you’ve already moved on thout me, and replaced me

e amount of years we’ve spent, bonding, ilding our friendship

one in a few months

Now, your brightest polaroids have different smiles than mine And the ones with me aren’t even on your wall anymore It doesn’t seem like you care about me. Want to talk to me. Do anything with me I guess you don’t need me anymore But I still care a lot about you, even if I don’t say much Your friendship means so much to me, even though it seems like it's not the same with you But you don’t seem to care about me anymore They say that sometimes The best thing to do is to let go of a friendship And put the polaroids away But as much as it hurts to keep them up, I can’t bring myself to take them down I don’t know what to do anymore I don’t want to be hanging on to you but I can’t bring myself to let go either But maybe, it’s best To part ways And maybe it’s time To finally say goodbye And let the polaroids fade away

star-crossed rivals glynda stein There was a time when you told me stories Of your conquests, tragedies and glories. In constellations, I have weaved your tale, The gods winced as they saw our friendship fail. With your betrayal, graves were dug in ponds, There lies our treasured, cherished, sacred bond. Hungrily, flames devoured memories Of inside jokes, passion, first pleasantries. With spindle, spool of thread and pair of shears, I spun your fate as I had dried my tears. If you had learned to control your shameful desire, We’d be lovers instead of perishing in fire.

where is the me i left behind? glynda stein

Once I had ribbons wrapped around ankles Knees peeking from beneath a twirling skirt A tummy full of giggles and butterflies Cradling dolls, writing thank-you cards Heart bursting of lullabies and musicals Curling upwards, my mouth tasted of pomegranates With starry eyes, I captured the universe Crown of daisies entwined in my braids But my phantom haunts the mirror Fingers caress their face and mine Their empty glare stares back at me Where is the me I left behind? Cropped hair thinning with wilting willows Crimson streaks stained my glassy eyes Ballads blossomed from my lips like bloodied baby’s breath Buried underground, the heart feverishly rang the bell Motionless hands once grasped burnt matches tightly Perhaps the bitten apple is rotting from the core A myriad of scars decorated my purple knees Muddy jackboots treading over torn photographs My scars are a sign I fought I breathed and my heart beats on My bruises will fade with time Compassion for me I’ve won

love is a car glynda stein When she raises her voice at me I shudder in fear “Have you eaten already?” I could hear her slam my door “Have some more. Here,” She handed me a bowl of rice Plastic chopsticks standing erect Can I shield my face from the blow this time? Surprisingly, the chopsticks were not thrown When she stormed off nights ago Following the fall of her daggers I wept equally in joy and in pain She may have spared my vision But the crack on my door deepened Today she offered me kindness I detest her seasonal affection They say that “family hurt each other the most Because they will always stay together” In confusion, I sank into insanity The mother bird did not tend to her young She blamed the younger for talking back Must I famish myself to appease the elder one? If their love’s a car I’m slashing the tires I’m walking until my shoes wear down to the soles I’ll bandage the scar I’ll unplug the wires I’m singing the blues all night long ‘bout my woes
